So I'm able to calculate numbers and total them but the only issue is having when I clear my calculator to 0 and punch in a number like 9 for instance, it goes to 09. How do I make 0 change to a number on my calculator whenever I hit clear and then hit a number again? http://codepen.io/lisaramos/pen/MKBmgm

@idietmoran

@LisaRamos

function C() {
  $('.clear').click(function() {
    $('#inputSec').text('0');
    input = "";
  });
};

what's happening is you are setting the textfield to have zero and when you press buttons it adds the number to the string. You need to come up with a way to remove the zero if it's the first number and there is no decimal point.

I removed 0 from .text() and when I clear my calculator, nothing happens.
idietmoran
@idietmoran
Feb 12 2016 00:22 UTC
@LisaRamos you would have to keep the quotes so something like .text("") which represents nothing.
CompGeekGirl

Feb 12 2016 00:23 UTC
@idietmoran I'll try that.
idietmoran
@idietmoran
Feb 12 2016 00:23 UTC
but then the calculator won't display zero when it is cleared. You should write a function that checks if the first number is a zero and if it's followed by a decimal.
CompGeekGirl
@LisaRamos

@idietmoran Now how do I write that function?
idietmoran

@LisaRamos think back to some of the algorithims you've done. maybe try .charAt() . if the function returns true you should remove the zero, good luck

I'm not sure what to do with str.charAt().

I just tested on mine. I didn't have a zero appear either, but when I changed the "" to "0" it now does.
entry.innerHTML = '0';
rather than
          if(value == 'AC') {

@idietmoran I still don't have the 0 showing up on the screen of my calculator and when I press clear, 0 doesn't show up. In addition to that, when I hit a number, the 0 won't disappear, either. In other words, my calculator won't function just like the one on my laptop.

@LisaRamos I was just playing with your code and substituted my lines for the clear button with yours. It worked, but wasn't giving me a zero on your page, while on mine it did. So I suspect the problem is somewhere other than the Clear button itself.
for what it's worth, I preferred mine without the zero. I've got to go, so best of luck.

@LisaRamos I actually just substituted this
 if(value == 'AC') {

              decimalAdded = false;
with this:
  $('.clear').click(function() {
    $('#inputSec').text("");
    input = "";
    return [str.charAt()];
changing "AC" with "Clear" of course

idietmoran

Feb 12 2016 01:37 UTC

@LisaRamos
you have to use the function for it to work

$('.numBut').click(function() {
  var input = $("#inputSec").text();
  input += $(this).text();
  $('#inputSec').text(numToString(input));
});

here, anytime you invoke a number and 0 is the first number it gets removed.

i used the function in the .text() field

Feb 12 2016 01:41 UTC
@idietmoran I was actually talking about the button:active pseudo-class which gives the button a 'pressed down' effect when clicked. My aim is to disable that, to get a style similar to flat buttons
My problem is, when i click, the text inside my button moves by some pixels. I don't know if there's any 'clean' way to cancel it. The only idea that i have is to play with the position of the text inside the button

@LisaRamos the problem is that the program is trying to add a string and a number together. I haven't used the math.js library so I'm trying to figure out where it's going wrong

idietmoran
@idietmoran
Feb 12 2016 01:52 UTC
@LisaRamos no i don't think so

@LisaRamos it's something like

as the input and .text() are strings, but i'm not sure out clicking on a .op calls an operator

lets say you plan on having an image for the background on your page, and you plan on adding it to a particular <div> when you are designing
should you do the sizing of the image when you are saving it to a website like http://postimg.org/, OR should you size the image when you add the URL to your code?
maybe always save images to a hosting site with as much size and resolution as possible and then scale them down when you add them to a page?
Joshua Bernstein
@jberns
Feb 12 2016 02:47 UTC
@vbroskas Depending on how you plan to load the image I think it is better to pre-size it to your page, as even if you take a very large image (disk space wise) and scale it down (pixel size) you have to transfer the entire file size before it loads.
but if you are lets say making a picture viewer you may want to load a low-res version and allow the user to view a high-res version that gets loaded when they click on the image rather than loading a page full of all of the high-res versions.
Pradeep CE
@cepradeep
Feb 12 2016 02:51 UTC

@jberns @vbroskas Pre-scaling an image maynot always be desirable, because users tend to have varying screen sizes. It's best to store the images in the right proportions (eg. 16:9 for laptops, a portrait orientation for phones etc) and then load them accordingly.

Also, consider optimizing your image to reduce the size. Google "JPEG optimizer" etc. Some online tools do it.

Loren Baca
@vbroskas
Feb 12 2016 03:00 UTC
@jberns @pradeepce thanks for the info guys. @pradeepce so do you mean you store the image on the website in various proportions, and then depending on what device the user is using, the correct image will be called out when they open the page?

@vbroskas It's pretty simple actually.
First off, choose an image for your background. Search for "jpeg optimizer" and choose one of the online tools that pop up. For example, https://compressor.io, Upload your image, let it compress, and download the compressed file. Then, use it in your site.

why are they still so offset to the left of the page?
I've tried messing around with different values, and using xs,sm,md etc
but I cant get the two columns to be evenly spaced in the middle of the page
Pradeep CE
@cepradeep
Feb 12 2016 03:38 UTC

@vbroskas I think the columns align left by default. If you specify a border for the columns, you might to able to see what's wrong. I usually have

div { border: 1px solid red; }

tommy

Feb 12 2016 19:02 UTC

If you use the header elements <h1>, <h2>, etc, you might notice that they look like regular text after the reset but it shouldn't do anything with flexbox, I don't think. It's mostly margins, padding, and font sizes. Here's an example of a reset: http://meyerweb.com/eric/tools/css/reset/
@tommygebru Oh, also... I include Universal Box Sizing with Inheritance in every project I start. It's so helpful.

  box-sizing: inherit;
}

@leaguelism I felt so stupid after I did the easy challenges and then faced the real web site creative process that I went back and did them all again. The second time I actually took notes on what I thought would be key to remember. I'm a nerd -- what can I say?! But what it really took to start the portfolio business was (after two weeks or so of being convinced that I didn't know enough) to take it one step at a time. I figured I could do the html part. Then I styled with css. Then I finally made inroads with js. I checked out books from our library and read lots of blogs. I really like css-tricks and David Walsh's pages. Don't give up!
