working on the twitch project and using angular, can't figure out how to get ng-repeat to recognize a change in the array its reading from. i can see the scope array changing in console. $scope.$apply didn't seem to want to work. http://codepen.io/calicode/pen/dMVGBE?editors=1011

@sh1g the reason why the twitter field keeps appending additional quote text has to do with the structure of your twitter button function

//Click or Run #1
      $("a.twitter-button").on("click", function() {
        var _href = $(this).attr("href");  // _href = "https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text="
        $(this).attr("href", _href + quoteHolder); //HTML href attribute = "https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text=" + "Quote 1 text"
      });

on this run the logic would be fine to post a tweet of quote text, but the problem occurs upon 2nd runs onwards

//Click or Run #2
      $("a.twitter-button").on("click", function() {
        var _href = $(this).attr("href"); // _href = "https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text= Quote 1 text"; specified by the first run's attribute modification
        $(this).attr("href", _href + quoteHolder); //HTML href attribute = "https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text= Quote 1 text"+ "Quote 2 text"; here is where you are getting the additional text
      });

I would suggest you modify the logic in such a way that you do not mutate attributes but rather replace all of its contents

Like:

John Sevilla
@jsevilla274
Apr 15 2016 01:46

@sh1g one way to do this is simply to assign the beginning of the twitter intent a variable

var twitIntent = "https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text="

and then replace the variable _href with your new variable

 $(this).attr("href", twitIntent + quoteHolder);

this way on every click the quote is replaced in the href and the beginning is always static as opposed to reliant to the current contents of href

Dardan Demiri
@dardandemiri
Apr 15 2016 01:46
Those can be done as an alert
Because I for example don't feel good when someone tells me You need to pres Enter :P
Javier

Hey, I've been working on the Weather App project for hours and have nothing to show for it. I can't figure out how APIs work and I'm getting frustrated. Out of desperation, I copied the "Get JSON with the jQuery getJSON Method" exercise, replacing their API call with the weather API I'm using, but it didn't work. Can someone help me out, or at least point me in the right direction? All I have is here: http://codepen.io/jacobhanawalt/pen/pyLYrr
Honestly, I didn't get much out of the whole JSON and APIs section. I felt like I was presented with a bunch of stuff without any explanation of what it does
Michael Karpinski
@karpimpski
Apr 15 2016 02:08

@JacobHanawalt you need an API key. to look at the JSON in the getJSON link, open the link and download a Chrome JSON extension

@GregatGit to remove the “stigma” of just being a fork.. I’d make a new one and paste in the stuff from the fork.. Then delete the older stuff. It also helps your stuff stay together in codepen rather than bits in ‘pubic’ and other bits in ‘forked’ and there is always the question of “did he fork that from someone else?” .. I know they can look in the details, but will they?

@jalley3 you're going to want your api call inside of your navigator.geolocation if, otherwise the call will be made before the user has an opportunity to enable geolocation and provide the necessary variables

@jalley3 i figured out your problem, you're declaring local vars longURI and latURI which are outside of the scope of the getWeather() definition, give getWeather those two vars as arguments in the call and the definition and everything should work fine
     var longURI = encodeURIComponent(long); //local to navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition's callback and inaccessible by getWeather()
      var latURI = encodeURIComponent(lat); //local to navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition's callback and inaccessible by getWeather()
      getWeather(longURI, latURI); //put them in as arguments here

function getWeather(longURI, latURI){ //and here

It is a demo to get the geolocation but I a new to JavaScript.

@Trion129 For a start you can add console.log statements to every function, this will help you see what's going on. For example your argument passed to your interval is a function call and it's not necessarily a function as it should be. But there are apparently more issues and you need to write smaller working code chunks to have control over your code

  1. how can i fix the size of my output bar on the top of my calculator? right now if there nothing in the h3, it shrinks down because i'm only using padding to size it.

The more you mess with margins and widths and heights in your CSS, the more you mess with bootstrap's ability to format for you. Something to keep in mind that might help you leverage Bootstrap is that the 12 columns are relative to whatever container you put them in--not necessarily the viewport width.
kirbyedy
@kirbyedy
Apr 15 2016 09:22
@ctataru you can put the height on that div of lets say 50px

Why does '.text-primary' class not work inside a jumbotron?

Like for example:

@ChadKreutzer as a wild guess, I now suspect that when decrement is passed as a parameter, into setInterval, it's 'current' value of undefined is what's used, wheras a function call will look for a later definition. completely unfounded though

@dardandemiri you need this:

      for (var i = 0; i < twitchUsers.length; i++) {
        var title = $("#" + i).text().toLowerCase();

        if (title.indexOf(inputText) > -1) {
          $(".channel" + i).css("display", "block");
        } else {
          $(".channel" + i).css("display", "none");
        }
      }

there's some other issue though with your code - the for loop doesn't seem to iterate over all the users. it seems to ignore the cretention and esl_sc2 channels. i gotta go, so i can't figure out where that's coming from, but hopefully the above will help you

@jmkulakowski javascript objects aren't indexed with numbers, you can get all properties of an object with the Object.keys method and then loop through all properties
Jasmina Babic
@animsaj
Apr 15 2016 14:34
@jmkulakowski you need for..in to access properties of any object nested or not https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Statements/for...in

@jmkulakowski
Apr 15 2016 14:39
@animsaj I apprecaite your response, but for...in loops were not even discussed in the material leading up to this challenge. Also, I can access the nested sections of the JSON object with jsonObject[i]. If I type "console.log(contacts[0]);" it logs the first object
Stephen James
@sjames1958gm
Apr 15 2016 14:40
@ajaybti Also, because you are using getJSON, have to access the response inside the callback.
@ajaybti Use console.log(JSON.stringify(data)); to see the format of the data that you need to operate on
@dagman Getting there. I spent about 4 hours last night formatting and working on the logic on mine. http://codepen.io/silgarth/pen/ONQZpZ still have some logic to work on - want to add sounds

@jmkulakowski for this challenge you can loop through contacts with for loop, checking if contacts[i].firstName === firstName, if so checking if contacts[i][prop], if so return contacts[i][prop].if not return "no such property" and back to firstName not exesting return the string the challenge asks for

@avanbox Likely you have run into the classic javascript closure and loop issue - http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1451009/javascript-infamous-loop-issue
@avanbox The code inside your getJSON code closes over the loop variable or a value outside the loop, but not the value, when your loop completes all of the closed over functions refer to the same variable which is not set to the last entry in your arrary.
@avanbox A solution is to put your $.getJSON code in a function and call it passing those variables that change in the loop.

@jmkulakowski The constructor is used in programming to create a boilerplate object with generic/repeatable data such as a User. You won't be using that for awhile if you're just starting because there is nothing that requires it until you get into data generating and such. Making a constructor to make one object would be a waste.

@avanbox you’ll need to use .forEach to loop through the streamers . there are other ways but that’s what I use.

@Janaya425 I have been at it since a liittle over six months. I love it and it’s going great. I am learning a ton very quickly. You think ou have something down and then something new pops up. It’s a challenge. I was an accountant before so things were . . well al little boring. This is a welcome change. Like you I had problems with time I was able to do it in the beginning. Just do what you can, be patient, understand that it’s a tough process and do the work. You will get there. Good Luck! If you ever need anything let me know.

For the Personal Portfolio Page, what does it mean by: " You may use your own CSS and frameworks other than Bootstrap."
Does that mean don't use bootstrap, or use others including bootstrap?
alpox
@alpox
Apr 15 2016 21:15
@Gitnaut Exactly what it says ^^ you can use whatever css framework you want to use
@Gitnaut It means you can use bootstrap or you can use another if you like. Most do it with bootstrap though
@Gitnaut Don't use multiple css frameworks together. They don't like each other.

I guess I read it as it would have been with a comma
You may use your own CSS and frameworks, other than Bootstrap.
But regardless, I get the intent now

Med K

Apr 15 2016 21:18
Other can be used to mean an exception
alpox
@alpox
Apr 15 2016 21:19
But i thought coupled with the word "may" it is still just a possibility
I read that almost the same as "you could"
Med K
@Gitnaut
Apr 15 2016 21:20
The may part would seem to apply more to the first part of the sentence. "You may use your own css and frameworks..."
but then "other than"
would indicate an exception to the first part
At least that's how I read it
alpox
@alpox
Apr 15 2016 21:21
Hmm you're right, that it is there as exception, but that doesn't mean that you are not allowed to use it. Its just to exclude bootstrap from the css and frameworks mentioned. The may makes it possible to use both though, just like a hint
Thats how i read it :D
Med K
@Gitnaut
Apr 15 2016 21:22

    var data1Array = [];

    var elem = "";
    for (var i = 0; i < channelsArray.length; i++) {
        var request1 = 'https://api.twitch.tv/kraken/streams/' + channelsArray[i] + '?callback=?';
        $.getJSON(request1, function parseData(data1) {
            asignVariable(data1);
            data1Array.push(temp);
        });

    }

    function asignVariable(data1) {
        if (data1.stream === null) {
            temp = 'Offline';
        } else if (data1.status == 404) {
            temp = data1.message;
        } else if (data1.status == 422) {
            temp = 'Account Closed';
        } else {
/*            console.log('data1.stream ', data1.stream);
*/            temp = data1.stream.channel.status;

@cpheimbach Did you console.log them before this statement?
@Y-Taras Hmmm you can either sort them after you got them, or you insert them at their right position in the array, or (usually my favorite) you use the "next" callback style
@Y-Taras But that is a bit a special one ^^

Apr 15 2016 22:18
@cpheimbach There is the case where the drawer doesn't have the correct types to give change
alpox
@alpox
Apr 15 2016 22:19
var i;
function next() {
  var url = .... yourArray[i] ....;
  $.getJSON(url, function(data) {
    // add your logic here
    next();
  });
  i++;
}
next();
With that code you execute them one after another

Christian-Peter

Apr 15 2016 22:21
@alpox Yes I reviewed and put them into different variables and all that
@sjames1958gm hmm I thought maybe a type error
Taras Yaremkiv
@Y-Taras
Apr 15 2016 22:22
@alpox ok I'll try to understand and use it, but it is weird to hear that promises and all that new things from JS6 cant handle it. There are definitely so many things to understand in JS core
Dardan Demiri
@dardandemiri
Apr 15 2016 22:22
@Y-Taras Are you having trouble with .getJSON ?
Taras Yaremkiv
@Y-Taras
Apr 15 2016 22:23
@dardandemiri not with JSON but with order of requests
Dardan Demiri
@dardandemiri
Apr 15 2016 22:24
I had a lot of problems too
alpox
@alpox
Apr 15 2016 22:24
@Y-Taras Be aware that the method with inserting them at the right place in the array as it was before, would be faster
Dardan Demiri
@dardandemiri
Apr 15 2016 22:24
with the Twitch project
until I found this: https://learn.jquery.com/ajax
alpox
@alpox
Apr 15 2016 22:24
@dardandemiri The problem was for @Y-Taras That the requests were parallel and so some responses came earlier as others. So the order of the array as he had it before changed.
Dardan Demiri
@dardandemiri
Apr 15 2016 22:26
yeah @alpox I understand, that link: it teaches you the Core ajax with everything you need

going to see if anyone knows
is there a way to restart a css animation

without having to clone, before(), and remove the element?
like if there's any type of framework that makes this possible

@Y-Taras I just remembered that one thing can work with promises - the $.when would do it. But it would wait for all requests to be finished before it gives a callback, so they would not pop in after each other, they would be there all together. I don't know if thats the effect you want
I kinda liked it in my solution that they popped in as they came :D
Dardan Demiri
@dardandemiri
Apr 15 2016 22:31
@alpox, this .getJSON and .ajax burned my brain for almost two weeks till I understood them well
alpox
@alpox
Apr 15 2016 22:31
@dardandemiri That can happen at the beginning :D
Dardan Demiri
@dardandemiri
Apr 15 2016 22:31
yeah I believe you :P
alpox
@alpox
Apr 15 2016 22:31
The problem for most beginners is the async nature
Asynchronous code can be really confusing when you've seen only a synchronous program flow
Dardan Demiri
@dardandemiri
Apr 15 2016 22:32
That was really Crazy to understand
I thought this Asynchronous code is a BUG, and it's a mistake :P
alpox

Hahah :D yeah sure
ehekatlOf

Apr 15 2016 22:33

Apr 15 2016 22:35
@dardandemiri What do you call future here? :D
Dardan Demiri
@dardandemiri
Apr 15 2016 22:35
because C# is used for Virtual Reality and that's the future
ehekatlOf
@ehekatlOf
Apr 15 2016 22:36
oh C# is used for everything
case in point unity is all C#
alpox
@alpox
Apr 15 2016 22:36
Not just ^^ C# has still the problem with its windows-base. Well its getting better currently
Dardan Demiri
@dardandemiri
Apr 15 2016 22:37
In witch way are you learning C# @ehekatlOf
alpox
@alpox
Apr 15 2016 22:37
I'm glad that C# was my base language for long :D well i think i would have to learn something again when i start with it again though. Some things changed. But i became a strong linux user and so C# was bit gone for me
Dardan Demiri
@dardandemiri
Apr 15 2016 22:38
That's nice @alpox
alpox
@alpox

Dardan Demiri
@dardandemiri
Apr 15 2016 22:39
Wow
That would be amazing
alpox
@alpox
Apr 15 2016 22:39
Well its already here :D that existed for long
That platform is quite stable already
But it was so expensive that no-one used it
They changed their plans for free now

there's also a dotnet fiddle

didn't know that that exists :D

Yeah that's it
alpox
@alpox
Apr 15 2016 22:44

I even leave my vim for that .D

Ahhh
that's why
alpox
@alpox
Apr 15 2016 22:50
Well vim needs a lot of configuration first to fit it to your needs. And if you start with it, it will take you some days/weeks until you can really use it to write something :-)
Dardan Demiri
@dardandemiri
Apr 15 2016 22:50
I understand it now

Coy Sanders

Apr 15 2016 22:52
yeah vim doesn't open up a new window, its a console editor
alpox
@alpox
Apr 15 2016 22:52
But there was no other text editor (except emacs) which got so much attention and was used so much for all programming stuff that it was made for being really effective at it
Dardan Demiri
@dardandemiri
Apr 15 2016 22:52
@Y-Taras you mean Kite ?

alpox
@alpox

@andrewchar In fact, now that I look at it... it's off by the width of the "X" symbol. If you change the margin of your list-items from:

margin-left: 13;
margin-right: 20;

to:

margin-left: 13;
margin-right: 13;

It should work.
