Hello every one! I spent 2 hours trying to solve this issue without any result,I want my header (marked in yellow), to be fixed on the left and don't extend entire when the window is minimized (I'm using bootstrap)

@AnnasLab it is still doing some weird things as you scale from full screen down, still jumps across the page and then jumps to the top of the page?
AnnasLab
@AnnasLab
Apr 29 2016 00:58
@kmulligan that was the problem I figured out the problem and I'm trying to solve it
so the 20% doesn't work
and when I give the header an absolute position it disappear (cause of DOM flow)

I asked this in the general help thread, but I realized it's probably more appropriate here: I'm having trouble getting started on the quote machine project. Can anyone suggest some supplemental material or otherwise point me in the right direction?

@kmulligan, i understand. I’m going to add that functionality. So for the twitter integration, clicking a button, should help the user tweet the quote?
Kevin Mulligan
@kmulligan
Apr 29 2016 01:28

@SekharKolli Twitter has a very thorough documentation section for developers
@doglieb I also recommend installing JSONView if you are using Chrome https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/jsonview/chklaanhfefbnpoihckbnefhakgolnmc
JSONView you can copy/paste your JSON call into the URL bar, and it will show you what it will return

@doglieb if I ever have time I'm going to try and do a pull request on FCC to insert a challenge that gets you to pull fake API data so you can see what all of the options are
@doglieb also, for the quote machine, you don't have to use an API. You can use a static object
Ryan
@doglieb
Apr 29 2016 01:50
@kmulligan 2 more questions then: what's a pull request and what's a static object?
Kevin Mulligan
@kmulligan
Apr 29 2016 01:55

@doglieb a pull request is where you go into github, go to FCC in github (since it is an open source project), pull the code down, and you can make changes. So in theory I could add a new challenge to help educate campers on APIs.

A static object - I just meant an object (instead of an array or string) that doesn't change -- it is "static" aka "hard coded" into your JS

@wbrennan899 you will have trouble using the Open Weather Map api and the Chrome browser . If you use Chrome for the geolocation Google have made it compulsory to call your codepen site using https:// but the free weather api can only be called using http://. Ths wil lead to a message about insecure origins. This only occurs in the Chrome browser. Getting your lat and lon by using an IP address based api will get around that but it may not be as accurate.
@wbrennan899 of course other weather api’s may allow https://so search around.

:point_right: algorithm no repeats please [wiki]

Problem Explanation:

  • This task requires us to look at each possible permutation of a string. This is best done using a recursion function. Being able to build a function which collects all permutations of a string is a common interview question, so there is no shortage of tutorials out there on how to do this, in many different code languages.
  • This task can still be daunting even after watching a tutorial. You will want to send each new use of the function 3 inputs: 1. a new string (or character array) that is being built, 2. a position in your new string that's going to be filled next, and 3. an idea of what characters (more specifically positions) from the original string have yet to be used. The pseudo code will look something like this:

    ```
    var str = ???;
    perm(current position in original string, what's been used in original string, current string build thus far){
    if(current string is finished) {
    print current string;
    }else{
    for(var i = 0; i < str.length; i++) {
    if(str[i] has not been used) {
      put str[i] into the current position;
      mark str[i] as used
      perm(current position in original string, what's been used in original string, current string build thus far)
      unmark str[i] as used because another branch in the tree for i + 1 will still likely use it;
    }
    }
    }
    }
@chiho13 basically Chrome have decided that if you don’t use https:// to call your page that uses geolocate they won’t run it
Unfortunately the free version of Open Weather Map won’t let you use https://
@chiho13 so you have to either use an IP based location api or find a weather api that allows https://
@chiho13 I used http://ip-api.com/ to get their location (approx)
@alpox yeah, I am thinking of doing just that but I still would like to know why this isn't working. console message says entry1 is not defined even though it is defined. could you tell me why this is happening?
alpox
@alpox
Apr 29 2016 09:38
@silentarrowz Your script file gets added after the rest of the page is loaded (CodePen does that) So the function entry1 doesn't yet exist when the script in your html gets loaded.
faraz
@silentarrowz
Apr 29 2016 09:39
@alpox yeah, that makes sense. so maybe I should put the script at the top of the page??
function entry1(wikent) {
  var wikdiv = document.getElementById("entries");
  console.log("wikent is:", wikent);
  wikdiv.innerHTML = wikent;
}
</script>
Marcel Schulz
@MarcelSchulz
Apr 29 2016 09:45
entry 1 is not yet defined when the callback calls it
yeah @alpox snippet will work, I believe it’s due to codepens scopes that this doesnt work
alpox
@alpox
Apr 29 2016 09:46
@silentarrowz But this is not really a right way to do it. Your script tag says it wants to load javascript. But your src points to a JSON resouce
Marcel Schulz
Apr 29 2016 09:46
the code in the script box is being executed after the dependencies
function loadXMLDoc() {
    var xmlhttp;
    if (window.XMLHttpRequest) {
        // code for IE7+, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari
        xmlhttp = new XMLHttpRequest();
           if(xmlhttp.status == 200){
               document.getElementById("myDiv").innerHTML = xmlhttp.responseText;
           }
           else if(xmlhttp.status == 400) {
              alert('There was an error 400')
           }
           else {
               alert('something else other than 200 was returned')
           }
@trcwrx78 one thing someone pointed out to me on my app was that i had a lot of repetition in mine accessing the DOM, similar to yours. maybe you could store $(body) in a var. my understanding of the criticism is that it makes it cleaner and requires your page to search for that info only once so that it is more efficient. I think that matters a lot more when working on bigger sites but its good practice to get into. just a thought!
Just for my understanding, instead of using the separate #id's to populate the document, just target the one and use .html() to populate it. Kind of like the API exercise? @mattboland
@lettiebear here is an example in your code:
<a name="homeANC"></a>
<div class="container-fluid">
  <nav class="nav navbar navbar-fixed-top navbar-static-top">
    <ul>
      <li><a href="#homeANC">Home</a></li>
      <li><a href="#about">About</a></li>
      <li><a href="#services">Focus</a></li>
      <li><a href="#contact">Social Media</a> </li>
@lettiebear you have there both the ank (at the top of your container top page for home) and the href inside your nav bar
Hey all. Working on the tic tac toe project. Managed to go away and fix a load of problems but have one sticking point at the moment - whenever the user wins, the computer takes two turns to begin the next game (until the computer wins or there is a draw and everything works fine in the next game). I am guessing this could be a user click handler issue perhaps? if anyone could shed any light, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks. http://codepen.io/jask/pen/MyPqXm?editors=0010
@jask84 You function that handles the selection box click calls compFunc. And resetFunc calls this on startup so there are two computer moves there.
Stephen James
@sjames1958gm
Apr 29 2016 16:29
@jask84 I would move the user click handler out of userFunc and call userFunc on click - if it isn't the users turn (which it is almost always as the computer is fast) then do nothing in userFunc. Then you don't have the problem of multiple click handlers getting registered.
@tenkdayz As I understand it (which I don't understand JS sentence structure, just the JS math, basic), I'm supposed to create a sentence that provides variable blanks that different words can be applied to. The challenge:
function wordBlanks(myNoun, myAdjective, myVerb, myAdverb) {
var result = "";
// Your code below this line
// Your code above this line
return result;
}
// Change the words here to test your function
wordBlanks("dog", "big", "ran", "quickly");
you can pick any initialvalue to set winStateState to, but it should be something you know that winState will not use
because winState might return 0 it might be better to use some weird large number, like 1111111
Hello everyone
I’m having an issue getting my text input fields to center on the pomodoro project
See here:
I asked a while ago but got no response so figured I’d poke again. I also posted the question on reddit:
https://www.reddit.com/r/FreeCodeCamp/comments/4h057k/pomodoro_question_how_to_center_an_input_field/
But haven’t had success yet.
var myList = [["cigarette cartons", 1], ["ramen noodles", 328], ["mystic literature", 090], ["coffee", 3], ["cans of tuna", 8]];
Where is my error? It's telling me:
var myList = [["cigarette cartons", 1], ["ramen noodles", 328], ["mystic literature", 090], ["coffee", 3], ["cans of tuna", 8]];
Sorry, it's giving me two syntax errors.
Any one understanding the "Boo who" algorithim? This is what I have:
function booWho(bool) {
  // What is the new fad diet for ghost developers? The Boolean.
  var test = Boolean(bool);
}
@Juwdohr You should test bool without type conversion
if(bool === true || bool === false){
//do the thing
}
Jacob Sommerville
@Juwdohr What you're doing with Boolean is just creating a boolean value with the falsy/truthy value of bool.
Well, vanilla JavaScript will make you a more developed programmer. You can learn things like jQuery, Angular, but you don’t really have a grasp about what is going on. If you learn vanilla JavaScript, it will be much easier to transition from framework to framework. For example, going from JavaScript to Angular would be much easier than going to jQuery to Angular. Things like jQuery and Angular are similar to riding around the block with training wheels on the bike. @stevenliu409
@Daxo were you able to fix your append yet?
Brandon
@Daxo
Apr 29 2016 22:27
@MarcelSchulz nope
Marcel Schulz
@MarcelSchulz
Apr 29 2016 22:27
ok, let’s take a look
the response is {error: "Unprocessable Entity", message: "Channel 'comster404' is unavailable", status: 422}
so the object does not have a property streamwhich you try to refer to in the append argument
Brandon
@MarcelSchulz oh sorry I screwed it up
@MarcelSchulz I changed the code
One sec, I’ll put it back where it would deliver true
Marcel Schulz
@MarcelSchulz
Apr 29 2016 22:35
ok
Brandon
@Daxo
Apr 29 2016 22:35
okay
should go to true now
I tested it outside if the if statements and it didn’t do anything either
Marcel Schulz
@MarcelSchulz
Apr 29 2016 22:37
now it’s still trying to read data.stream.channel.name which doesn’t exist
just wrapping that in an if statement should work
Brandon
@Daxo
Apr 29 2016 22:45
oh!
@MarcelSchulz thanks!
getCurrentPosition() and watchPosition() are deprecated on insecure origins. To use this feature, you should consider switching your application to a secure origin, such as HTTPS. See https://goo.gl/rStTGz for more details.
any workarounds for this? Codepen is not https
okay… got another one… getting an undefinied error when I try to access the array of names inside the loop http://codepen.io/apeiron/pen/GZYJvN?editors=0001
Pretty sure its an async error but I don’t know how to solve it since I need the array outside of the loop to give it a Arr.length value
just add (streamerArr) immediately after your $.getJSON()
that will pass the variable into the callbal of your getJSON request
like that:
$.getSON({
 …
})(streamerArr);
this happens because the variable is not in scope within the getJSON function’s callback
