I can't seem to ping one using an http request inside of codepen
For the quote generator problem
also in jquery is it ("document").ready(function() or is it (document).ready(function()
are there quotes or no quotes

@Vanhealen you should have the actual browser dev console open looking for errors and also console logging things as you go to see what’s what

@Jaketh No, that was my next step. Going to copy it over to my IDE and run it, was hoping there was an obvious omission on my part before giving that a go.

@mutantspore are you familar with bootstrap andhow to make webpages responsive?
my page seems responsive in that it moves down in size and my boxes stack vertically.. however whenever i actually look on my phone they do not stack and are somehow just "static."

May 31 2016 01:18
@Dueldrawer8 well you have 2 xs and one sm but the real issue is that teh description ends up forcing the div deeper (higher) .. either mak eteh print smaller as you reduce size or truncate the text a so many characters. you did a bonfire on that topic
Randy Goldsmith
@Dueldrawer8
May 31 2016 01:18
@mutantspore hm debug mode it stacks.. fullpage view its big
@mutantspore alright, ill take a look, and ill also take the course you suggested. Its just confusing to me when I only really have one column and not two or three which i could split up the screen
on*
Bruce Young

@Dueldrawer8 where you assemble the info in your JS you create 3 cols

yes they are .. what’s happening is that the text goes from taking up 1 or 2 lines to taking up 3 or 4. maybe if you didn’t put th eimag eup as a image but as a background for the first div it would cope better
@Dueldrawer8 you can adjust CSS based on media queries @media

does anyone have a good recommendation for resources to learn more about bootstrap3 and media queries? i think both might help me complete my personal portfolio page assignment
Isaac Pak
@pak11273
May 31 2016 01:41
@jrandallhansen yes
@jrandallhansen do the free "html and css" from http://udacity.com. This will be all the bootstrap you will ever need. As far as media queries, some stackoverflow.com searches should be enough!
Jake
@Jaketh
May 31 2016 01:45
@jrandallhansen the documentation on the bootstrap site is all I've ever needed.
it shows a lot of examples.
Isaac Pak

May 31 2016 01:45
@jrandallhansen bootstrap and frameworks are constantly changing. You need to learn stuff like how frameworks work, grids, etc. Udacity "html and css" will teach you this and more...

@Jdeadevil the !important stuff thrown around is kinda scary. especially using it on the universal selector. never seen that boss.
@5t33 Give. The. Element. A. Width. And then. Give it. A margin. of. auto. on the left. and right.
Jonathan Davey
@Jdeadevil
May 31 2016 01:55
Someone suggested it in another room, haha, it wouldn't work without the !important
But to be honest I wouldn't even need them if I just rebuilt the entire navigation bar with Bootstrap, but I just can't be bothered, lmao
Jake
@Jaketh
May 31 2016 01:55
the uiversal selector is what you use to apply a rule to everything.
important overides the specificity of everything.

Jonathan Davey

May 31 2016 01:56
Haha, maybe I'll take your advice and make it less scary code
Jake
@Jaketh
May 31 2016 01:56
read up on specificity, in css, it'll make things, make a lot more sense, and then stuff just feels easier later.
its the reason ID's override classes. and the reason psuedo selectors overide element selectors. if you don't know how all that jazz goes, then, its gunna be real hard to make good websites.
Jonathan Davey
@Jdeadevil
May 31 2016 01:58
Yeah, well I did that on the FCC lessons
And then the Bootstrap section
Although I still kinda feel like I don't know enough to confidently make a website
Jake
@Jaketh
May 31 2016 01:59
instead of using the universasl selector, go into the settings on code pen, and select a normalize.css file. it'll make everything work accross browser in a safeway. Tell the guy that told you to use * with important that I said to go die.
kidding... just kidding
FCC is a safe place...
to share bad ideas.
Jonathan Davey
@Jdeadevil
May 31 2016 02:00

yeah, use a normalize.css option, codepen has one ready to rock. I'd just start over with bootstrap. people in this industry talk alot of crap about bootstrap, but they all still know how it works, and will probably agree that you need to understand how framworks work, to get much done in a production environment.

Good day fellas! I've been on my portfolio page for about a month now, just when i thought i was finished, i noticed

1)My Albert Einstein quote text was overlapping from its container, I've tried fixing it several on several attempts but its not just working.

2)Also, my page suddenly has this white space in its left and right hand boundaries

3)The page fails to be responsive on a mobile view. Not totally though, but its not just giving the desired view on mobile devices.

I'll forward a picture pointing out some issues and as well my codepen link. HELP ME PLEASE!!!

Isaac Pak
@pak11273
May 31 2016 02:56
just don't nest containers inside of containers, rows inside of containers is fine, but i find that you get in a lot of trouble nesting containers
basic bootstrap template should be more or less like this
<div class="container-fluid">
  <div class="row">
    <div class="col-xs-12">
    </div>
  </div>
  <div class="row">
    <div class="col-xs-12">
    </div>
  </div>
</div>
i always use this base template for all my projects
mayunited12
@mayunited12
May 31 2016 03:01

@pak11273 Oh really! wow! Something was telling me those containers were too much, I'll definitely put placing the page in a container-fluid to test. I'll get back to you sir. Thank you once again.

PS: Doing that might take time because of the amount of context on the page, so if I'm not be able to do that this midnight(my own local time). I'll do it during the day.
I'll leave you a feedback, i hope to see your reply. thank you.

 for ( var j = 1; j <= arguments.length; j++) {

    for (var i = 0; i < arr.length; i++) {

The task is "You will be provided with an initial array (the first argument in the destroyer function), followed by one or more arguments. Remove all elements from the initial array that are of the same value as these arguments."

@anshap1719 you don't need to use loops

@atharris2015 make your classof (.bg) margin:auto -50% auto;
The problem is not with your background image. its the position of your "ARMANI".

May 31 2016 03:45
-50%?
Elbert Cortez
@trip16661
May 31 2016 03:46
guys how do i stop an element from pushing another element down?
https://fiddle.jshell.net/d65unbde/
the more padding i add to p
the more my input goes down
mayunited12
@mayunited12
May 31 2016 03:47
i inputed -50% to know what position it was
so i noticed the image in relation to the armani adjusted
to a rsponsive view
maybe not -50% exaclty, but around the figure
try inputing it and see
atharris2015
@atharris2015
May 31 2016 03:48
@mayunited12 so I tried that (to my bg and then to my h1 instead) and while it fixes that problem it creates a bunch of space on the side?
mayunited12

May 31 2016 03:49
checking
Isaac Pak
@pak11273
May 31 2016 03:49

May 31 2016 03:52
@trip16661 what do you want it to do?
Elbert Cortez
@trip16661
May 31 2016 03:52
just the p item to be on the top
of the input
Jake
@Jaketh
May 31 2016 03:53
@trip16661 just apply margin to the sides. use margin-left:10px; margin-right:10px;
Elbert Cortez
@trip16661
May 31 2016 03:53
@Jaketh why would that make any difference?
Isaac Pak
@pak11273
May 31 2016 03:54

@trip16661

<div class="container">
  <p>Search by quotes</p>
  <input class="author" type="text">

  <div class="buttons">
    <button class="search">Search</button>
  </div>
</div>

use this for html

Jake
@Jaketh
May 31 2016 03:55
@trip16661 because if you apply regular margin:10px; it will apply it to all 4 sides automatically. pushing your other stuff down.
Elbert Cortez
@trip16661
May 31 2016 03:56
@pak11273 i cant do that because container is a class where everything is centered and the buttons will be on the footer
@Jaketh i tried adding the margin** to the left and right and still nothing
Jake
@Jaketh
May 31 2016 03:57
@trip16661 you removed the old padding and margin declarations?
mayunited12
@mayunited12

think you could post a codepen so we can see what the problem is?
Isaac Pak

@trip16661 and changer you css to this
html {

}
body {
    background-color: #a300d8;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 0px;

@pak11273
May 31 2016 04:01

@trip16661 that will get you on a better start, your stuff is broken right now:
@trip16661 is that kinda what you are trying to do?
Elbert Cortez
@trip16661
May 31 2016 04:02
no no
i wanted it just on the middle
Isaac Pak
@pak11273
May 31 2016 04:02
@trip16661 the "search for quotes" part?
@trip16661 oh you mean the whole thing...that's no problem
Elbert Cortez
@trip16661
May 31 2016 04:02
and then push the search for quotes
a little bit more up
Isaac Pak
@pak11273
May 31 2016 04:03
@trip16661 are you using bootstrap?
Elbert Cortez
@trip16661
May 31 2016 04:03
it was currently centered just on the middle
no im not
im trying to not use bootstrap
at all
Isaac Pak
@pak11273
May 31 2016 04:03
@trip16661 ok, just use my code and wrap everything in your container and use css to center it
.container {
    display: table;
    margin: 0 auto;
    margin-top: 20px;
}
that should center it horizontally
Elbert Cortez
@trip16661
May 31 2016 04:06
y but the thing is to center just in the middle
of the screen
so it needs vertically aswell
Isaac Pak
@pak11273
May 31 2016 04:06
@trip16661 all you need to move it down is just add some margin-top goodies
Elbert Cortez
@trip16661
May 31 2016 04:06
that's why
    position: absolute;
    top: 50%;
    left: 50%;
    transform: translate(-50%,-50%);
centers the container just in the middle\
body just need to be relative
Isaac Pak
@pak11273
May 31 2016 04:07
then do this:
.container {
  position: absolute;
  top: 50%;
  left: 50%;
  transform: translate(-50%, -50%);
}

Elbert Cortez
@trip16661

May 31 2016 04:10
@trip16661 you can remove that button

@Neotriz sounds like it requires https
Elbert Cortez
@trip16661

that's the issue xD
i dont want it to do that

the p element

@buiphuking

can i ask something?
if ($(this).is(':empty'))
what is that mean guys ??????????
Jake
@Jaketh
May 31 2016 04:12
its not a noob question, and honestly its just my best guess. But, https is the secure version of http:// so it seems like its saying it no longer supports http: as the transfer protocol. @Neotriz
Elbert Cortez
@trip16661
May 31 2016 04:13
if you add margin on the bottom or increase its size
it just pushes everything down withing that div
Isaac Pak
@pak11273
May 31 2016 04:14
@trip16661 yeah? what do you want it to do?
Kenzo Mendoza
@KenzoM
May 31 2016 04:14
@Jaketh I think using Codepen makes it a bit hassle to use geolocation. Is there solution to go around this when it comes to locate the user's location?
Elbert Cortez
@trip16661
May 31 2016 04:14
to be on the top of the input (with some spaces like mby 70px)
Jake
@Jaketh
May 31 2016 04:15
I honestly haven't gotten to that, I'm working through all of the FCC problems carefully before I move on to the projects.

Isaac Pak

h1#title {

@atharris2015 it's not really a good practice to mess with <h1> like that though, i'd actually put an id that specific h1, something like <h1 id="title"> and css the id tag "title"

Hi guys - I'm starting on the wikipedia viewer, I've been playing around with the wikipedia API for a while. I think I'm getting there but there is something that bothers me. In the JS on this codepen, any idea why "var item = result[i].pageid"gives a result in the Chrome developper tools console when logging, but say var item = result[0].pageid or var item = result[1].pageid doesn't? http://codepen.io/jowze/pen/NNZNKY/?editors=1010
when requesting console.log(item); after declaring the variable with var item = result[0].pageid, the console gives this error "pen.js:25 Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'pageid' of undefined"
Jowze
@Jowze

basically so far I only managed to access the result in the JSON with a for loop. I cannot seem to manage to get each key of the the object using result[0].pageid, result[1].pageid, result [2].pageid etc....
Maybe someone has an idea :) ?

@Jowze something i learn reciently trying to do the same thing is that when you make an asynchronous requesst (asking for info to an api) javascript cant read that information on load so he think its undefined

@RompePC - the way that you have to do it to make it work is to access everything (including your CodePen project) using http:// - that way, the http://ip-api.com/json gets your location information, and the openweather site can then be accessed with http:// - everything http://

Hello Everyone, I am hung on something that should be very simple yet it doesnt seem to be working according to how Im reading the documentation.
Im attempting to make a very simple API call, I set up a few console.logs because I wasn't getting any data, My inner function doesnt appear to call at all after my get request. However Im getting a 200 OK from the API server in the log so the get request is actually being sent. Ive tried with a basic $.get and $.getJSON and I get nothing back. It wont even set a basic HTML string withing the function so it seems to be that the functiuon isnt even calling for some reason but according to how I read the documentation for .get it is syntactically correct. I wonder if any of you have ideas?
Here is my code:

$(document).ready(function() {
getQuote.on("click", function() {
console.log("InitSuccess");
$.getJSON("http://quotes.stormconsultancy.co.uk/random.json", function(data) {
$(".message").html("hello");
console.log("InnerFunction");
});
console.log("AfterFunction")
});

});

@Kleineken - hello there. I have a question - what is getQuote? I wonder how you are setting up your click handler, basically. If you're using jquery, perhaps you are setting a variable with the jquery object for the button... It would be easier to look at in the context of your entire page setup...

Hey guys, I finished my tribute page (https://codepen.io/emedrick/pen/yJBGRb/?editors=1000), but I was wondering if you all had any wisdom on background image sizing. Can you make a background image class="img-responsive" somehow or make it so the image shrinks and expands with the screen size rather that staying the same size and losing parts of the image?
Bruce Young
@mutantspore
May 31 2016 17:50
@aayanqazi yes in theory but unfortunately Chrome now expects https to be used to make it work… BUT the weather api from open weather map (free version) will not work over https and you can’t call a page using https and then drag in http content so try http://ip-api.com for your location instead.

Hello! So, I'm doing the "Build a Personal Portfolio Webpage" challenge and I'm testing my dropdown menu in mobile. Using navbar-collapse, the links do not work & the navbar will not stay fixed at the top, but they work in browser on desktop. Also, I tested this link from bootstrap on mobile and it works: https://getbootstrap.com/examples/navbar/. So, I put the code directly into codepen to see what I may have been doing wrong, and when I load it up on mobile it doesn't work, even though it worked when I went directly to the link through mobile browse. Is this just a bug in codepen? Link to my pen: http://codepen.io/MistieOut/pen/beNpwp

Are you asking to remove the white space above the image? If so, applying the background property to the body should do that.

@Jdeadevil have you tried to make the background: transparent?
Renata
@rsip22

@Jdeadevil that's because you're using the bootstrap class to define the navbar. you can create a navbar with the <nav> tag without assigning a class to it
Jonathan Davey
@Jdeadevil
May 31 2016 20:12
Ah alright, so the classes automatically give it a background color?
Renata
@rsip22

yes. the default is white... if you use "navbar-inverse" it's black
but you can also create a new class and define the background to another color

@Jdeadevil We use the Bootstrap Framework so we don't have to write tons of code, but you can do whatever you want with it, including not use it at all for an element.

Mostly, it's that you have the overflows hidden in your CSS body.
I took them out and it lets me scroll.
If you want to allow your images to re-size, I would suggest using some bootstrap divs instead of fixed witdths & heights.
sentedelviento

I'm not sure what it was, I exited the tab and went back in and it let me see it properly, that was weird. I'm on chrome too! Haha. In any case, I think it's because you have the class twitter-share-button to change the color of the text in your twitter button.
If that's what you're trying to do.. cause when I took it out it changed colors like the facebook button.

@MrChristofferson
May 31 2016 22:46

@sentedelviento Change your <button> tag to <a> and add a target="blank" to get the link to open correctly in codepen:

<a class="btn fa fa-twitter twitter-share-button" target="_blank"></a>`

And then update this line of JS:

var twit_link = $('.twitt-share-button');

to:

var twit_link = $('.twitter-share-button');

Your twitter button should work after making the above changes
