@dagman I haven't used TweenMax, so I can't say for sure, but I wouldn't use them together. You may also want to consider jQuery 3.0, because it now uses requestAnimationFrame() under the hood

Hello Everyone! I am setting up a button to share quote content for the random quote generator project. My issue is that a couple of quotes have semi-colons in the quote text, this causes a problem with appending via the url, everything else works fine. I wonder if anyone may know a way to get around this problem, perhaps accessing the status update system another way other than appending the url? I saw the developer section at twitter but it looks like content needs to be downloaded from them, unless i am not reading it correctly

@JonSnow08 Hi, I actually did the tribute page first on my own, then started a new pen using the code from Quincy's example. I did that as an experiment to see what would happen with his code. Now I understand what Jumbotron does, but I don't know why he used div=row and all the column divisions. I deleted that code and it didn't change the look.
does anyone know why you'd use a row for the h1 heading in the Example Tribute Page? It seems unnecessary to me
Larry Tseng

@CSStiles , did you try resizing the browser?
Jake
@Jaketh
Jun 03 2016 02:16
@CSStiles row just makes a new row series of columns. so if you had your column spanning 12, accross the whole page, then you'd need a new row before you can add things. The rows and columns are there to manipulate layout on different displays, like phones
yeah, if you take them all out, and then make the browser narrow stuff may break.

assuming both of those divs close, yeah, all of that should fill across the width of the screen. It will jump to new lines if it runs out of space still.

@CSStiles should fill the width of an extra small mobile screen. It'll probably keep that behavior as it goes up if there aren't other column classes.

Jun 03 2016 02:43
sounds like a scope issue
looks like one too. So, any variable you declare inside a function, can't be accessed by other functions that are outside of that function.
easiest solution, would be to declare your joke variable, in the global space.
then assign it wherever.

Jake
@Jaketh
Jun 03 2016 02:48
interesting. yeah I noticed you declared it a string when you initialized it. I doubt it will fix it but you can jsut declare it without giving it a type, so : var joke;
but I think the json should be handing you back a plain jane string anywayz.
so it shouldn't matter... unless its handing you an object? ugh and js is weakly typed language, so it would probably reassign the type as needed anyway? theres so many grey areas. lol
true + true === 2 for christ sake
Stephen Mansfield
@StephenMansfield
Jun 03 2016 02:51
i think it is handing me an object but on line 24 when i go joke = json.value.joke;
i thought that should give a string back
Jake
@Jaketh
Jun 03 2016 02:58

Jake
@Jaketh
Jun 03 2016 02:58
this on is a bit of a head scratcher, I see the results from typing in a hard coded value are working too. @StephenMansfield
@amirghafouri you'll have to override the specificity, quickest way is to assign ids to all of the things you want to change the color of. then change the css of those ids

Jun 03 2016 03:09
@StephenMansfield the first function you write at the top of the page, isn't super clear about how its working, maybe give the arguments more semantic names?
@amirghafouri they're all in a div with an id of navbar collapse? or you're dynamically adding the id? if the latter, be careful, having multiple IDS of the same name can cause probs.
Amir Ghafouri

@deegs21 you're missing a </div> from what I can see
@deegs21 I'm not a bootstrap expert but thats what I can see so far
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Jun 03 2016 04:05
@deegs21 - you have a <span> that is sort of intertwined with a <div> - your opening and closing <span> tags cannot be split by a <div> - that's another thing that might be causing you some trouble.
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Jun 03 2016 04:10

@deegs21 - this HTML code works, at a medium screen width:

<div class="container">
  <div class="row">
    <div class="col-md-6">
      <img src="http://www.karardh.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Doc-Holliday.jpg">
    </div>
    <div class="col-md-6">
      <h1 id="header1">Doc Holiday</h1>
      <h2 id="header2">Gunfighter, Gambler, Dentist.</h2>
    </div>
  </div>
</div>

But you do have to have the screen at Medium or greater width.

I'm having some trouble with the twitch api project. I'm getting both the user's names, and the games that they're playing, but I can't get them in the same place. It seems like my global variables aren't being referenced correctly, or something is being evaluated out of order. I'm not really sure but when I logged "user" to my console, it logs all of them, and THEN logs all of the games played, which doesn't make sense because I think it should be user-game user-game. I can't seem to figure out the issue, though. If someone could check it out with fresh eyes it would really be appreciated.

@Dueldrawer8 you have an issue with the logo I think. don’t make it image responsive. just have a class that fixes it sixe (to 70px width and height) because you are just squishing it at some point and there is no need.
@Dueldrawer8 i just redid mine from strips like yours to cards.. though I may still do more with the menu area yet.

Randy Goldsmith

Jun 03 2016 07:23
@mutantspore i took some of udacity repsonsive design courses.. rule of thumb is generally not to make fixed widths they say. And if i want to make it responsive to not set fixed widths in my container but a 100%.. and for some reason the latter doesnt work but fixed seems to work better
@mutantspore that looks good
Bruce Young
@mutantspore
Jun 03 2016 07:24
@Dueldrawer8 yes but in this case you aren’t having them big and reducing them as you go to a smaller screen. you are just making them skinner if at very small screen sizes you hav etoo much text.. which now you are removing anyway

@Dueldrawer8 well it does what was required :) maybe the orange with white writing is hard to read. you have used black on purple in teh button button (not easy to read) but white text with the purple later (easy to read).. Yes you could spend all day tweaking it ..and you want to move on .. though in a real job.. you’d have to fix them and by fixing them now you’ll not make the mistake later as you’d know not to do it. but I understand that you want to get some breadth of knowledge too rather than just depth in lesser areas

Jun 03 2016 09:19
@MD91 yes, this way you will be able to manipulate the height of each element, for example
@96street I'm only getting one quote, and only after click - I think you should make it load a random quote on page load as well, so that it's not empty at the beginning
@96street I don't have experience with getting content from external source, I just made my own object with a couple of quotes, so I can't help with that

Clyde
@hea-hea
Jun 03 2016 09:39
@cacious7 the divs with images have different padding
why is that? I guess you should have common CSS class and styling for all three so that they match
And there is no use to giving different separate id to each of them - they are similar elements so just use one class
Clyde
@hea-hea
Jun 03 2016 09:46
@pnicole96 what would you want to use the IDs for?
nicolepepperoni

Clyde
@hea-hea
Jun 03 2016 10:00
@cacious7 there must be a way ;) but I'm a beginner too so I'm just guessing
you could use some default class from bootstrap

@abhinavadar take the createButton() out from rightr beneath the document.ready and it works its calling the function out of order? I have hard time explaining

if you want the button right away you will have to probably split some of the createButton funciton into the "click: function section

@IndiraShrestha just add position: absolute; to your a.down-button, then you can adust it
or if you want it to remain there, use position: fixed;
@user-sarang can you post your codepen?

Yes
and when i click the arrow it will scroll down to about me section
user-sarang
@user-sarang
Jun 03 2016 15:37
@IndiraShrestha so you need to give the div a height. The height of a div changes with the content inside it . However, it does not work for background images. So add a class to your div and then in css assign a height to it.
JD Tadlock
@jdtdesigns
Jun 03 2016 15:38
@IndiraShrestha just add height: 100vh; to the .header-content;

Could someone help me understand this pseudocode?

procedure generate(n : integer, A : array of any):
    if n = 1 then
        output(A)
    else
        for i := 1; i ≤ n; i += 1 do
            generate(n - 1, A)
            if n is odd then
                j ← 1
            else
                j ← i
            swap(A[j], A[n])

At what point does the code go over the generate function call after the for? Naturally it would be when n = 1 but at that point, 1 isn't returned, it's simply displayed in the std.io. So how would this work, when is it that the swap function runs?

wrestling for 3hrs on an algorithm problem, copying and pasting into an edito so you can output consoloe.logs of the variables as you go along for clarity, then you realise all it was was a return inside a loop instead of outside it. does being prey to simple oversights ever go away? -

Jun 03 2016 15:51
@marcvesper Nope.
You'll find missing brackets/semicolons/code inside/outside loops even in professionally written software
Even Apple had a bug caused by not using brackets with an if condition
Bruce Young
@mutantspore
Jun 03 2016 15:53

@Dueldrawer8 this is the relevant bit of your code with some deleted to take less space. You can see that you assign displayName to the channel display name when they are online but only to the channel name from your array when they are offline.

     if (data.stream === null) {
        status = "offline";
        var displayName = channel;
      } else {
        status = "online";
        displayName = data.stream.channel.display_name;
      }

You can see just by looking at the results any ..Free codecamp is displayname FreeCodeCamp and your array and output says freecodecamp for example.

@aGirlWhoCodes Your results call is outside of the ajax request
ajax is async, so you need to either set the results inside the ajax function or use a callback after you've set the variables

@aGirlWhoCodes That should help. This one is tricky because you are getting a result for each name in the array. A very efficient way is to use .map to go through each value in the array. It has a callback that you can set variables inside of for each streamer. I'll post an example in a sec.

yeah, I was doing the bootstrap tutorial and just found it tedious that I had to create the grid by creating a nested <div class= "col-xs-4"> and just was wondering why I couldnt have just nested everything to create the grid in the container fluid class @gkcodeman

@mutantspore Did you find that your custom CSS would regularly interact with the Bootstrap code in unexpected ways? I gave up and just decided to custom write something (we'll see how it goes)
Jonathan Carroll
@gkcodeman
Jun 03 2016 17:21
@parisempress meaning nest everything into one div?
@parisempress because for example say you wanted more than one col- inside of your wrapper or "container-fluid", there has to be a separation between them and it wouldn't make sense to define them all inside of the class meant for the wrapper
parisempress
@parisempress
Jun 03 2016 17:27
yes... i understand now what you is like the container is a box and each input takes a certain column of the container and that what you must it defined for each input @gkcodeman and as such in each container-fluid there can only be a certain amount of columns because each column is 12 i think.... am i on the right track?

@jdtdesigns I think it depends why you are doing FCC or learning web dev. Regardless of what you personally think about this or that framework, if you are here to get a job you need to at least have some idea of what it is and how it works.

@jfuller30 You need to add both jQuery and Bootstrap.js to get the mobile menu to work.

@jdtdesigns I'm working right now at a great company, making pretty awesome money and guess which framework we use to knock out prototypes ? Do we only use BS? No! Do some projects call for it? Absolutely. So whether you know css/js really well or not, sometimes you aren't the decision maker about which is better than which.

Hey guys so i'm trying to figure out how to structure my JSON for the quote generator but i'm having problems remembering the syntax... what's wrong with the following?
var quotes = {
  1: [
    "quote": "Good Kid Maad City",
    "author": "Kendrick Lamar"
  ],
  2: [
    "quote": "Alright alright alright",
    "author": "Matthew McConaghey"

}

document.write(quotes[1][quote]);

@gkcodeman I understand where you're coming from. 'Prototype' is the word. If you want to create a quick 'layout' of a site, then bs will do that for you. If you try to use it for custom site design, you will not be using it for what it was made for.

@mcorby17 you probably want the opposite being, qoutes as an array with object inside

    "author": "Kendrick Lamar"
  },
  {
    "quote": "Alright alright alright",

@jdtdesigns For sure. It doesn't lend itself well to fully customized web design due to its nature. But I will say, if the client says "hey! I want this in bootstrap and I have given my speech about how they could go this other way" then they will be getting a BS website to the best of its capabilities. :smile:

Hey guys, a rather general question...

I am starting off with handlebars.js and now I am wondering, how modular should my templates be? Do I usually have a template for every reused element in my project?

James Hall
@James-H33
Jun 03 2016 21:21
@Bubblbu Just ask yourself the question? "Could this code be reused somewhere else?" if Yes, then make it a component if not.. Header and footer are always reusable. For the most part, by the time you go to do the next project you'll know more then you did last time so you will probably end up rewriting the code anyhow. Just test the waters..

// Your code below this line

// Your code above this line
return result;
}

// Change the words here to test your function

@NewtonXu right i tried to print it in my for loop using channels[i] but it doesnt work. monstercat prints online

@pawan92 you need to actually replace your for loop with something like .forEach as for doesn’t play well with asynchronous api calls

@mutantspore i think the solution was to run the for loop as a function of i

@NewtonXu yes that is one way.. you can use .map also

Can someone tell me why my code isn't working the way i want it to? i have created a div element and i want to have the user click it and have a random quote appear in place of the original div text (click me) $(document).ready(function() {
$('.box').on('click', function() {
$(this).hide(700);
randomize();
$(this).fadeIn(700);
})
} )

var quotes = ['a', 'b', 'c', 'd', 'e', 'f', 'g', 'h'];

function randomize () {
return quotes[Math.floor(Math.random() * quotes.length)];
};

var el = document.getElementById('quotebox');
el.addEventListener(onclick, randomize, false);

the even listener was commented out, but it appears to make no difference regardless
