@JonKaric can you tell me how scale() works? Because I just want the text to become 1px large on hover

@faisal1337 scale is a CSS3 attribute that makes words or pictures bigger

Dylan

to do it on hover, select your item then add hover, ex. .firstDiv:hover
then add scale as an attribute

Having trouble doing the "link to different point of the page" thing. I tried using a href="#id" but that hasn't worked
Dylan
@dhcodes
Jun 27 2016 00:18
@faisal1337 well scale would be like this:
-ms-transform: scale(2, 3); /* IE 9 */
    -webkit-transform: scale(2, 3); /* Safari */
    transform: scale(2, 3);
but 2 and 3 are the width and height multiples
so that would be 2x width
and 3x height
in the example
Jonathan
@JonKaric
Jun 27 2016 00:19
@faisal1337 You can't scale the font size. This is a workaround to make sure the button doesnt get any larger. If you want it to get smaller i think you can still use decimals. So use 1.01 or somthing like that to get the required effect

Jun 27 2016 00:40
@DunderStruck do you want to add more color above About? Do you mean that?
If so then add padding-top: 15px; It will increase the color above About
Daniel Combs
@DunderStruck

Yes, but I also want to extend it downwards as well. I want the entire about section to have a background color
Faisal Zulfiqar
@faisal1337

@DunderStruck then add that class "background" to the above line right after you've written row

@jrandallhansen I had that problem too some days ago. The navbar is like floating and doesn't takes space on page. That's why image stays at top. Give it a padding in rem. Like 'padding-top: 5rem;' That should work.

@buiphuking $().ready() is a jQuery method that you use when you run your code in the head of the html. It will wait until the document is loaded before executing the js inside. (function(){})(); is an iife(Immediately Invoked Function Expression). It's a function that calls itself and runs right away.

@jdtdesigns, thanks to your solution, I figured out why CSS wasn't being applied to <input> tags globally: Bootstrap was overriding it. I'm guessing that my adding [type="text"] or [type="checkbox"] allowed me to override Bootstrap.

var myStr;
myStr should have encoded text with the proper escape sequences and spacing.
myStr should have two tab characters \t
myStr should have one newline character \n
myStr should have a correctly escaped backslash character \
myStr should not have any spaces in between consecutive escape sequences.

Can someone lend me a hand? In the Sorted Union exercise, I have the logic of the algorithm down. But...I am confused about how to accept mulitple arguments from the examples
The function is written just as function(arr) --- looking for one argument, presumably an array
But the examples give "one or more" objects
and they arent given as an array
they are given separated by commas

if u do this.. ALL those 3 function will be called after 1000

setTimeout( someFunction1, 1000 );
setTimeout( someFunction2, 1000 );
setTimeout( someFunction3, 1000 );

using setTimeout u need to calculate the timer for the next calls...
if u wanna run 3 setTimeout after 1second each....

setTimeout( someFunction1, 1000 );
setTimeout( someFunction2, 2000 );
setTimeout( someFunction3, 3000 );

(1000 === 1 second )

@anu0012 I used the API query and prop parameters to mess around with the API long enough to convince myself I was using it , could return results and display them. But in the end I had to look to see how the example did it. There are dozens of parameters and I don't think it's a good use of learning time to study one API just for a small project that's a proof of concept
@rudolfpablico are you doing calculator? You could try using $(this) as a click handler to get the text

Quick question.. On the Portfolio Project, is it OK to use Bootstrap templates? I have created a few Bootstrap sites, and I have a couple templates I like to use. They are slightly more complex in setup than what was taught so I am not sure if I should use them or it breaks rules or if it is OK?

Aaron Taylor
@aarontaylor
Jun 27 2016 13:41
OK, but I mean rather than code it up from scratch I have several templates I have created in the past and a few that I found that would be a fit. There is work in making them more appropriate for the project. In my main template I even have a fair amount of JavaScript and some outside CSS libraries (CSS I am terrible at designing) so are those OK? Or is that considered cheating. I am trying to keep in the spirit of the classes and at the level of classes for the most part.
And thank you @coffeebeanzz for replying.

Hi I'm new to JS so far all I've been learning is maths?! Isit all maths?
Dylan
@dhcodes
Jun 27 2016 16:09
@nahid-uddin while some of it can be math related, you don't need to think of it as math so much as logic.
while it uses similar operations, it's more so considering the logical steps in a series of events

@nahid-uddin js on a website is mostly used for dynamic changes of the site based on inputs from the user. So the logic here is "if user clicks button, run program or load new page"
but it allows much of this to happen on a single page, hence you might hear the phrase "one page applications"
for web apps

Taylor Morgan
@tmdesigned
Jun 27 2016 17:20
I am a little stuck on the twitch API, can someone (@alinp25) help me with a little problem?
my code is requesting the JSON string and that works, but I'm messing up how I assign that data to variables
if I declare the variable before requesting the string, when im in the callback function it doesnt assign the data to it
var gameName;
$.getJSON ..... function(data){
gameName = data.stream.game;
I am cutting out a lot of the code there, but the point is inside that callback function, gameName is defined, but not outside of it
what is the right way to do it? It seems like the callback function is just making its own local variable instead
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 27 2016 17:24
no its using that variable gameName @ohiosierra, but i'm guessing you're using a console.log function to view the result and its outside of the anonymous function right?
Taylor Morgan
@tmdesigned
Jun 27 2016 17:25
...yes
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 27 2016 17:25
put the console.log function inside the anonymous function to see if it works
it "could" work outside, but the problem is getJSON is an asynchronous function
its not guaranteed to finish executing before you start running other commands
Taylor Morgan
@tmdesigned
Jun 27 2016 17:27
well so I made my function to return an object, a slimmed down version of the JSON data
return {
"name":name,
"online":isOnline,
"link":link,
"logo":logo,
"users":users
}
so in my parent code, I was going to set an object to equal the returned object
but if async is the issue, I feel stuck
without getting into the whole .when stuff
Im guessing it wouldnt be kosher to put a callIsComplete bool inside of the getJSON anonymous function
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 27 2016 17:30
no because what do you do with that boolean?
try moving some of your logic inside the getJSON function if you need it
Taylor Morgan
@tmdesigned
Jun 27 2016 17:30
um...run a loop outside of the anonymous function repeatedly until that boolean turns true?
while(!callIsComplete) { //wait }
ish
so anyways, since that is getting crazier, instead.....send a blank object to the function, which the JSON query fills out for me? But I still wouldnt know when its done
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 27 2016 17:34
no, you don't want to do that because that defeats the purpose of having asynchronous calls
if you're just going to wait for it to finish anyways
Taylor Morgan
@tmdesigned
Jun 27 2016 17:35
yeah I am trying to stuff the asynchronicity into my linear conceptualization of the problem

I have a feeling it could be because of the added resource files I currently have, there could be one missing...
Taylor Morgan
@tmdesigned
Jun 27 2016 17:36
but I am having trouble conceptualizing the right way. Right now my flow is loop through array -> pull out channel name -> call a function to request the channel info from the API -> populate the fields
so should it be pull out channel name -> call a function to request the channel info from the API, which then itself calls a function to populate the fields?
@miriam-z make sure you add Jquery first, then bootsrap
@miriam-z the order matters

@Volkov-Illya The addEventListener method is a callback function for document.QuerySelector. You separated them out and assigned just the callback which means it (the addEventlistener function) falls back to the whole document and not only your querySelector.
Write it like so:
var res = document.querySelector('#button').addEventListener('click', function(){
        getQuote();

you can go with a container for the header, a jumbotron or container-fluid for the main image
and another container for the text
also you can personalize that with like col-xs-offset-1 col-xs-10 to move the whole text wall a bit to the right

hey guys, quick question. im building my portfolio right now and my bootstrap navbar WAS working perfectly, but now it's scrolling down to, what appears to be, the second header of the next section. what could i have done that might be causing this?

@bsandusky
Jun 27 2016 20:26
@dcgoings Most likely, you have a missing </div> or other closing tag that is not there. That tends to make things wonky and is pretty common.
Dan
@dcgoings
Jun 27 2016 20:31
not seeing it. :(
i have a feeling it might be my padding, im not entirely sure though. it's messed up for both of my sections. EDIT: "it" being the scroll.
if someone could take a look, it would be really appreciated it. im not sure where the issue is. :( ill be back in a bit though so you won't get any replies from me for a couple hours.

I tried changing it to col-md-10 and doing col-offset-1, but that's not really close to what I had designed in photoshop. I know there's got to be a simple way to do this.

@allenewood - it looks like you are using bootstrap grid classes and then trying to center that box - the grid classes probably interfere with the centering...

In the quote challenge, I cant add the twitter button. I need to add a script tag just below the anchor tag and codepen wont let you do this if your using jquery's html function. Is there some other way around this? I need to add it later as I need to get the random quote first and splice it into the anchor tag's href.
greg
@wearenotgroot
Jun 27 2016 22:40
@cocofan yeah using jquery to access href attribute of the anchor tag should work(anchor tag should have target='_blank' to open another window or tab)
@cocofan another one is just making a button adding a click event that execute windows.open

im not sure what changed, someone earlier suggested padding but im not sure where. any ideas?
