Working through the Wikipedia viewer, having some trouble with the jQuery .click() function. I can't seem to get it to function more then once. My app only allows the user a single search entry. Here is the app: https://codepen.io/Raymen/pen/ZOeRWy?editors=1010

@RaymenDeol Yeah it looks like you need to find a way to get rid of the results from the first search and replace them with the results of the next search
trying to remember how I did that

@mcorby17

@RaymenDeol I didn't use ajax in mine unfortunately
Maybe if you try .html before .append... that should change the html inside <ul> first before it appends new data to it

I am trying to make the embedded video responsive. I have tried a bunch of different things I found online with no luck.

My only guess -which could be wrong- is that maybe codepen css doesn't recognize relative for position and hidden for overflow because when I enter the code, those 2 words show up white. I have taken all of that code out along with the width and height that was in the embed link from youtube.

Does anyone know of a solution?

@RaymenDeol Nice design! It looks like you only need to get rid of your current search results when you search again. I'd look into the .empty() documentation ;)

how do you remove a line break background from going in the nav bar
gjjgjj2
@gjjgjj2
Jun 29 2016 01:45
I guess for now I will just leave it with no height or width. If I give it a width of 100% and take out the height, it makes it fit the page but makes it too short.

Give your h2 element the class attribute with a value of 'red-text'.

<h2>CatPhotoApp</h2>

<p>Kitty ipsum dolor sit amet, shed everywhere shed everywhere stretching attack your ankles chase the red dot, hairball run catnip eat the grass sniff.</p>

gjjgjj2
@gjjgjj2
Jun 29 2016 01:50
<style>
.blue-text {
color: blue;
}
</style>

then go down to h2 and make it look like this:

<h2 class="blue-text">CatPhotoApp</h2>

<p>Kitty ipsum dolor sit amet, shed everywhere shed everywhere stretching attack your ankles chase the red dot, hairball run catnip eat the grass sniff.</p>

and replace blue with red

Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Jun 29 2016 01:50
@himuraTV - you need two things - there might already be one of them in the <style> section - a CSS class rule for .red-text. You just add that to the HTML element (in this case, the <h2> as class="red-text"
Zeek wilborn
@himuraTV

Hey there! Can someone help me out?
I've got an unordered list. I wanted to center the content within its list items. The text centered, the little dots next to them did not.
Is there a specific css property I need to use?
gjjgjj2
@gjjgjj2
Jun 29 2016 01:58
I just had this same issue @rennym19 ! I finally fixed it this way:
<ul class="text-left" style="margin-left: 10%; margin-right: 12%; font-size: 16px;">
you can adjust it as you need but it put it more to the center and allows it to render properly without going off the screen
you can see what it looks like here: https://codepen.io/gjjgjj2/pen/NrprNX?editors=1100
Renny Montero
@rennym19
Jun 29 2016 02:00
Let me try that @gjjgjj2
gjjgjj2
@gjjgjj2
Jun 29 2016 02:00
(open it in a new tab to see it better) and the font was just my preference, it isn't needed
and you can adjust the percentages as needed
Renny Montero
@rennym19
Jun 29 2016 02:02
Now neither the text nor the dots are centered... Maybe I'm missing something here?
gjjgjj2

Jun 29 2016 02:07
can you share your page so I can look at your code? Did you look at mine page to see if that style is what you are looking for?
Renny Montero
@rennym19
Jun 29 2016 02:10
Yes, looked at yours. The little dots are now closer to the text, which is great. But the text is not really centered yet...
gjjgjj2
@gjjgjj2
Jun 29 2016 02:12
I wasn't able to center the text and have the dots line up. I wanted my dots to be straight down and not follow the centering. Hold on I will look at yours.

jake-thewoz
@jake-thewoz
Jun 29 2016 02:16
@rennym19 why don't you try just removing the dots?
gjjgjj2
@gjjgjj2
Jun 29 2016 02:17
I did too but I could not get the bullets to follow the text- so I played with the heading to the list along with the list:
 <h2 class="text-left" style="margin-top: 60px; margin-left: 10%; margin-right: 10%;">Here is a timeline of Richard Feynman's life:</h2>

         <ul class="text-left" style="margin-left: 10%; margin-right: 12%; font-size: 16px;">
I wanted my heading for my list to be a little wider than my list but I also wanted it to render properly no matter the sized it was being viewed in.
Shawn Williams
@Shawn-Williams
Jun 29 2016 02:19
I would remove the default padding from the UL as well as the text decoration and then place a bullet using li::before. That should follow the text if you text-align: center;
That works in my brain at least
You can use a fancy icon that way as well, like something from FontAwesome
jake-thewoz
@jake-thewoz
Jun 29 2016 02:20
Yeah, I think that's a good solution. Or you could put divs inside the li.
Renny Montero
@rennym19
Jun 29 2016 02:21
@jake-thewoz Thats a nice idea, but I think the dots help separate the text so it is easier to read

@gjjgjj2 I'd also like to make a recommendation regarding separation of concerns. It is a good idea to start placing all of your styles in the CSS file rather than inline. It will be easier to maintain the code that way and you won't have as many issues with style overrides.
@gjjgjj2 Have you tried using a percentage based width?
gjjgjj2
@gjjgjj2
Jun 29 2016 02:42

I will take any recommendations you have

yes. I did. it worked but the height was much to skinny

Shawn Williams
@Shawn-Williams
Jun 29 2016 02:42
did you try setting height to auto?
gjjgjj2
@gjjgjj2
Jun 29 2016 02:43
I knew that more should be added to the css but I was trying to see how much I could do without googling a lot to start.
I did in my css script, let me try it in the html, I don't think I tried it there
Shawn Williams
@Shawn-Williams
Jun 29 2016 02:44
anything you place inline in the html will override the CSS in the file

gjjgjj2
@gjjgjj2
Jun 29 2016 02:46
I mean I know some of it and what it does but when it came to applying it to my page I felt more comfortable with the html. I think the other reason I did that is because in the video that goes with this challenge he mentions that everything except one thing is done in html, not css.
it is still short and fat with auto lol.

Jun 29 2016 02:57

Jun 29 2016 02:59
I could, yes
gjjgjj2
@gjjgjj2
Jun 29 2016 03:00
I think that might be good because once you click on it, they have served their purpose- that would feel really clean too.
or they could scrunch in as it spreads out
or right after it finishes
Shawn Williams
@Shawn-Williams
Jun 29 2016 03:02
Have a look at that
@gjjgjj2 I used Bootstrap's row class to wrap a div containing the iframe. I then set the div properties and set the iframe using absolute positioning. It now flexes as the window is resized.
@gjjgjj2 I also moved the CSS ;)
gjjgjj2
@gjjgjj2
Jun 29 2016 03:04
I see. That is exactly what I wanted. I will look at the code now, thank you so much. I really did spend so long trying to make it work. I will look at it now- and thanks- you rock.
Shawn Williams
@Shawn-Williams
Jun 29 2016 03:04
@gjjgjj2 on a side note, I would use the <caption> tag instead of <h4> to be more semantic
@gjjgjj2 additionally, you only need one set of tags for that line. You have it broken into two. Two lines can be achieved automatically as the line wraps due to width restrictions on the parent container or can be forced by placing a <br> tag where you want the break to occur. :)
gjjgjj2
@gjjgjj2
Jun 29 2016 03:06

you have to be on https
because of this, you have to use an ip location api for chrome and geolocation for other browsers
also, you need to add http:// before the api url

I'm working on my Pomodoro Clock and having some problems with making it responsive on different mobile platforms... the timer is working on some phones, but not on others. I'm not really sure how to even go about testing it or debugging. Does anyone know how to go about it? Here's what I'm working on:

Ok. The sound isn't critical, especially if it's a cross origin problem. If I moved it into a project file on github I could host it all together and that should take care of that, wouldn't it?
I used Howler js to use the audio files in my JavaScript, then found the audio file just on soundbible.com and punched in the URL to my JS. @nawrockp

Seems like it's just on iPhones that the script doesn't run correctly-- it won't even start the timer. At least narrowing it down on platforms.

@natashanazari you should just have one div with container
Egoscio
@Egoscio
Jun 29 2016 07:16
@natashanazari It's because you gave #intro-main a fixed height.
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 29 2016 07:16
and rows and columns between them too, maybe thats whats causing issues
Egoscio
@Egoscio
Jun 29 2016 07:16
If you remove the height property, and offset the section some other way, the problem is solved. Verified in inspect elements.
The boxes have nowhere to go, so they just overflow downward instead of increasing the sections hight vertically
Line 89 of your CSS file.
Natasha Nazari
@natashanazari
Jun 29 2016 07:22
@coymeetsworld What do you mean? Should I remove all of the individual container-fluids and only have one? How do I create separate sections then? @Egoscio Awesome, that worked!
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 29 2016 07:23
you can separate them by rows @natashanazari
don't know Bootstrap well but I believe it only expects one container
then you separate by rows and columns inside container
Natasha Nazari
@natashanazari
Jun 29 2016 07:29
@coymeetsworld Okay, will investigate further. It seems that you can’t embed <container>s, but you can embed <container-fluid>s, in which case using them to create separate sections is okay. Structure is a bit confusing for me, though. Actually think building responsive web pages is easier without bootstrap, lol.

I just thought of one more thing I would like to do but it may be beyond what I know how to do... any ideas how hard it would be to put the icon image I used in the 4 corners of the white area?

@michael-wise I started it last night and finished it tonight, just tried to get it done so I can keep moving- I really plan on learning python which I know a little bit of but not enough, felt it would be smart to have some knowledge of html / css before that. What do you mean by landmarks? I would love to break it up some but am not very creative at the moment.

Can anyone help with the below? The scope seems to be tripping me up. When I put $("#test").html(api); outside of the getJSON request it displays the API on the screen, but when I put it inside the getJSON request it doesn't appear.

I have a JSON which has parent child relationship based on the ids,

{ "bu_id": 6, "parent_id": null },{ "bu_id": 7, "parent_id": 6 },{ "bu_id": 8, "parent_id": null }
i want to display data using angular-ui-tree but it needs JSON in this format
{ "bu_id": 6, "title": "node1", "nodes": [ { "bu_id": 11, "title": "node1.1", "nodes": [ { "bu_id": 111, "title": "node1.1.1", "nodes": [] } ] }

so how do i convert my JSON from the above format to the below one.

@jakelmills I like your tribute page coloring and how it scrolls. I really only have one minor complaint
When you scroll to the bottom you see the navigation text to the right and on smaller screens and viewports it overlays heavily the other elements
But otherwise it looks pretty good!

Hey all. This feels really stupid, but I can't get the test for loop running at all. I just want it to add the word "test" to the page when it runs depending on how many sessions the user inputs. Ignore the other two values, they're not in use at the moment. I literally just want to test if the loop is running and it continually refuses. Can anyone see what's going on? https://codepen.io/jsanderson/pen/KMWXBX

I'm working on "building a Wikipedia Viewer" I have the api displaying I want in a test div. Now I'm going to try separate each entry to individual divs. Just getting some ideas for methodology. Would a switch function work well in this case?

Just iterating on each entry in the array and returning it to display in the HTML? Or is that inefficient method?

Yeah, I have been a developer for gosh, now 25 years.. but never on the front end of things.. This is a new world. I have done mostly just C/C++ on server side and in engine development. This is kind of fun and a lot different. The thinking is totally different. Thank you for the brownie points too @KoniKodes

@aarontaylor as @KoniKodes said you can try first with some local dummy data to test your functionality and design then you can try getting and interpreting data you receive from an external api. i think this is the scope of learning
Toni Shortsleeve
@KoniKodes
Jun 29 2016 16:24
@aarontaylor Yes it does :-) Happy Coding. I want to eventually learn the C's but first I need to master APIs.

Jun 29 2016 16:25
Yeah, that makes perfect sense. I built a framework up already for the HTML and the CSS and some of the JavaScript work. Ugly, but it helps me get up to speed quicker. Now just filling in the blanks.
Toni Shortsleeve
@KoniKodes
Jun 29 2016 16:27
@sorinr Yes, you are right. I think one thing I did learn was more about using json and pulling up random output. I had a specific theme and most of the sites I visited had one or two quotes that I liked but not so much the rest of it. But I've since almost figured out how to pull in only the ones that I want...
@aarontaylor exactly.

but for some reason, it always goes to the "else" statement, it's not going to the if "F" or if "C"
there's my code
the issue is that it's always outputting "00" (the else statement)
which I just added to test anyways
but "unitSelected" (which is "F" or "C", according to the console.log)

@aidansven where is your function switching from f to c or viceversa?
Ethan Rose

for some reason when I use if (unitSelected = "F")
@sorinr I have a separate function that changes the removes the "selected" class from one button and adds it to the other
when the other one is clicked
that one is working as it should though :)
//allows F&C buttons to be switched
$(".unit-switch-F").click(function(){
   $(".unit-switch-C").removeClass("selected")
      $(".unit-switch-F").removeClass("hoverer")
   $(".unit-switch-F").addClass("selected")

This is the code: var testObj = {
12: "Namath",
16: "Montana",
19: "Unitas"
};

// Only change code below this line;

var playerNumber=16; // Change this Line
var player = "Montana"; // Change this Line
The two guidelines it doesn't meet is (playerNumber should be a number ) (You should be using the variable playerNumber in your bracket notation ) . If anyone could help I would be so appreciative I've asked on HelpJavascript multiple time but people seem to be too busy. All help will be appreciative.

@jdtdesigns Hi I read through the ternary condition tried to follow your code from weather app
I was able to convert it from C to F but not back
JD Tadlock
@jdtdesigns
Jun 29 2016 19:44
@IndiraShrestha That ternary was in place to handle the correct output of the temp on the screen when the Reset button is clicked. If you're not coding a reset button, you can just set the temp to Celcius or Fahrenheit from the start and just switch it with the toggle button. Set the event listener up when the app loads($('#toggle').on('click', changeUnit)), and inside of the function changeUnit, set the logic up that will change to F if C is true and vice versa. ;)

@disofu234 A for loop will not wait for the code inside each iteration to run before starting the next, so you will only get one streamer's results. You need to use an iterator like .forEach() .map()

@mcorby17 Here's a way of doing it. ;)
JD Tadlock
@jdtdesigns
Jun 29 2016 20:45
@IndiraShrestha It's due to your code design. Right now, you have the temp amounts for F and C scoped inside the getJSON. These values won't be accessible outside that function. Create empty variables up top with your globals for those values and set them inside the getJSON. Then your other functions will have access to those temps. Also, think about the process. You 1. Get Location/Setup event listener on the toggle button 2. Get the weather based on location 3. If a user clicks on the button, a changeUnit function is fired that switches the unit based on which is one is currently showing. Create a global var up top with your others like isCelcius = true; Inside the changeUnit function you just need to check if (isCelcius) { change temp to F, isCelcius = false} else {change temp to C, isCelcius = true}
IndiraShrestha
@IndiraShrestha
Jun 29 2016 20:47
@jdtdesigns I realized (later on after spending hours trying to figure out) and made the tempofCelcius and F a global variable.

Working on the "Wikipedia Viewer" app. I have my API working. I'm trying to get my search entries to appear in different segmented divs. I have them nested in a parent div and then a bunch of div id's which constitute the entry's along the api object. How would I go about segmenting them? Should I just axe the parent div?

2 questions. I have added this atom image to my page and after a lot of playing around I have it doing what I would like for it to do about 99.9% anyway... question 1: is my code optimal for this or is there a better way? question 2: how to replicate it to the other 3 corners? When I tried what I thought was the intuitive answer for the upper right, it did not work at all... it went to under the current on and was not lined up nicely with it either. Here is my code and thank you!: http://codepen.io/gjjgjj2/pen/qNrQEz?editors=1100

JD Tadlock
@jdtdesigns
Jun 29 2016 22:20
@MikeBeers You can create a timeout scoped to the window and then clear it later.

clearTimeout(window.myTimer); // this can be called in any function since the window object is global

@flindip btw you need to put

$(".entries").empty();
for(var i = 0;i < array1.length; i++)

outside of the for loop so it will empty out the container before it append the new items, otherwise it will remove what you append and you'll end up with just one item

@jdtdesigns I'm contesting that you said she needs http to make it work over https codepen links

@TylerMoeller Lol, i'm telling you that if someone loads her pen from codepen.io or http://codepen.io, https://api.wikipedia.com won't work
Jessica
@QueenCode

try clicking on it straight from my profile and then altering the wiki link to https.. you'll see that it doesn't work

All of my codepens access APIs over HTTPS and they work when visiting the codepens over http or https
Where the APIs support HTTPS, of course :)

@TylerMoeller I'd like to see that ;)

@jdtdesigns And the Wikipedia Viewer, using HTTPS to talk to wikipedia. Codepen loaded over HTTP: http://codepen.io/TylerMoeller/pen/EKYPGZ

@TylerMoeller I'll admit that I don't know why that works. lol It always throws errors whenever I try to do something like that. Maybe it's a difference in browsers?

hoping for some help still :/ i just went live with my portfolio from codepen, but my navbar appears to be the only thing that's glitchy between the codepen and my livewebsite and i have no idea why. can anyone take a look?

and my website is ------ > goings.me

@QueenCode I don't know. I'm curious now - always thought it was supposed to be this way. If there's a way to talk to https, do it. :)

my guess is that it should probably be avoided though... i think it's one of those "best practice" things
sometimes browsers can be fussy about it

@TylerMoeller I'm lookin through your code right now to figure out what is causing it to work. But, like she said, 99% of the time, it won't work.

@jdtdesigns @QueenCode I've seen lots of code just omit the http: and use a url like //www.website.com/path/to/api and the browser automatically avoids mixed content if the API supports HTTPS
