@jdtdesigns @QueenCode I should say thank you for indulging me whether we reach an answer on this or not :)
I did find this on Stack Overflow, but not finding anything about browser compatibility issues with loading secure content over http.

@TylerMoeller So here it is. You're loading the apis over https but running your page from http. This is fine and will work. But if for instance you ran the page from https and tried to access an api over http, it wouldn't work.

So, my feedback was to call APIs over https, since you don't know whether or not your page will be loaded over http or https
That guarantees you don't get mixed content
Jessica
@QueenCode
Jun 30 2016 00:09
that makes sense @jdtdesigns https is supposed to be more secure, so i'd expect it to be fussier than http
JD Tadlock
@jdtdesigns
Jun 30 2016 00:09
@TylerMoeller The only thing is, your pen will always be loaded from http unless someone puts https in the url themselves
so it doesn't really make a difference in that case
in the future when codepen runs on https only, then that will be needed ;)

@wangzheblue and because you are using jQuery already
var x = $("#textinput").val();

Hi guys!

I'm trying to have my code scroll to a segment of the page when a button in my menubar is selected with the following code, can anybody spot anything that's preventing that from happening? :

$(document).ready(function(){
  // Add smooth scrolling to all links
  $("a").on('click', function(event) {

    // Make sure this.hash has a value before overriding default behavior
    if (this.hash !== "") {
      // Prevent default anchor click behavior
      event.preventDefault();

      // Store hash
      var hash = this.hash;

      // Using jQuery's animate() method to add smooth page scroll
      // The optional number (800) specifies the number of milliseconds it takes to scroll to the specified area
      $('html, body').animate({
        scrollTop: $(hash).offset().top
      }, 800, function(){

        // Add hash (#) to URL when done scrolling (default click behavior)
        window.location.hash = hash;
      });
    } // End if
  });
});
In codepen, all of your scripts and css stuff is done in Settings. If you look at the settings, you'll see on the first tab I've added the <link> and on the JS tab, I've added jquery.
Also, in the html, i deleted the <body><head> stuff which you don't put in the html section on codepen. I also fixed the html to make the links work.

you need to return jsonp

@jdtdesigns can you please send me a link with more explanation?
and is there a way to do this using CORS in jQuery?
JD Tadlock

Jun 30 2016 03:30
@asamolion If you're using jQuery you can just use $.getJSON()
$.getJSON('http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&generator=search&gsrnamespace=0&gsrlimit=10&prop=extracts&exintro&explaintext&exsentences=1&exlimit=max&format=json&callback=?&gsrsearch=' + searchInput, function(data) {

Jun 30 2016 03:35
Cross Origin Requests are not allowed from server to server in most cases. In order to get data from api that has the CORS header set to no access, you have to use jsonp which is a more insecure type of json that uses a callback to basically fool the server into giving it data.
@asamolion
callback=? just means you're returning the data into an anonymous function
like i did above
when i click , i want to change
<i class="fa fa-pause" aria-hidden="true"></i>
to
<i class="fa fa-play" aria-hidden="true"></i>

@natashanazari what is wrong with it on the iphone?
is it because it overflows horizontally?
Natasha Nazari
@natashanazari
Jun 30 2016 04:23
@hnry Yes, exactly. You have to slide around the web page to see everything. It wasn’t doing this before, so I’m not sure what the problem is.
hnry
@hnry
Jun 30 2016 04:26
@natashanazari it's also noticeable on the computer by the way, just less huge
@natashanazari it looks like it's doing it because of some of the margins you set
also not the issue, but you don't need to keep adding "container-fluid" class
@natashanazari jazz-head, #themes those are the offending styles (the margin) that make it overflow
@natashanazari if you remove the margins for those, it'll stop scrolling left to right, nice looking site btw, good luck, need to head off for dinner :)
Natasha Nazari
@natashanazari
Jun 30 2016 05:21
@hnry Commented-out the margins, but it’s still over-flowing. Will experiment a bit to see if I can figure out a solution. Quick question about <container-fluid>, though: if I only use it once, do I wrap it around <body> or nest it inside? Also, when I delete the repeating <container-fluid>s, how should I set up my sections? Should I use <row>? Enjoy your dinner! Thanks for your help (and the compliment)!

@natashanazari nest it inside the body, you just don't nest containers in containers , and yea use row
@natashanazari so i looked again real quick, it looks like it's 2 images that pop out to make it overflow in mobile
actually looks like it's a few images, looks like you overwrote or there's colliding styles for bootstrap's img-responsive
@natashanazari if you do img { width: 100%; } it will fix all the images popping out
but you probably should figure out what's overwriting bootstraps img-responsive class

I was using freecoecamps tutorial, but I've been working on this issue for a few days now.
My frist option (openweathermaps) would not work on Chrome due to location issues
Chrome's location security will only work over https source data, and openweathermap's is only over http
with this one I found today, it runs into the CORs issue
no idea how to bypass that right now

Dan
@dcgoings
Jun 30 2016 06:55

also
my media queries are at the bottom
here's something to note
i had to use min-height: 100vh; in my #home

Jun 30 2016 07:14
yup
Dan

im assuming it's nbd
Nathaniel Nasarow
@Torgian
Jun 30 2016 07:14
oh that's normal
think of it as if someone was expanding their window up

Jun 30 2016 07:23
@Torgian yeah man, unfortunately. so i got out in september officially, went reserves but buffalo nosc was a COMPLETE trainwreck so i immediately requested transfer to IRR. while all that was happening, i started my first year as a comp sci intended major, just finished in may with about a 3.5ish GPA. i had some savings from my deployments, but it's quickly running out, so ive been scurrying around to get this FCC stuff done and hope i can apply to a junior position somewhere around here.

Dan

Jun 30 2016 07:26

Jun 30 2016 07:26
There are two. Both in Colorado. Skill Distillery which covers Java and full-stack, as well as one other that is only full-stack with a focus on Javascript
Dan
@dcgoings
Jun 30 2016 07:26
you know the name of the second one?
Nathaniel Nasarow
@Torgian
Jun 30 2016 07:27
IMO Skill Distillery is the better choice. 5 months long, but covers both Java, as well as Javascript and other stuff for front end and back end stuff
Refactor I think
Egoscio
@Egoscio
Jun 30 2016 07:27
I recommend going fullstack with JS.

Dan

Jun 30 2016 07:27
hmm, interesting. time would be my issue, i dont think i want to postpone my degree :/ as much as a coding school would be great shortterm, im already 26 and dont want to put it on hold anymore

same here. i think the thing i struggled with most in my first year was just the testing on paper. everything else was pretty great. java was.. okay. im definitely enjoying front-end a lot more ever since i started FCC
Nathaniel Nasarow
@Torgian
Jun 30 2016 07:30
It is, and it's in use everywhere, along with C#
Front End is very hard design-wise. You gotta have a bit of art-skills too, which I kinda like, even though my designs kinda suck haha
Egoscio

Those are for conservative companies imho. All the new startups are leaving stuff like that behind.
Dan

Jun 30 2016 07:31
you talking about java and c#?
Nathaniel Nasarow
@Torgian
Jun 30 2016 07:31
Perhaps, but I think it's good to know about Java or C#. The mature stuff will last a long time. Good for the tool belt.
Egoscio
@Egoscio
Jun 30 2016 07:31
I don't have much of an opinion on C# as I haven't delved in it too deep.

C# is getting more attention recently

Jun 30 2016 07:33
@torgian damn it, it's not grabbing the location for me
i swear if it isnt one thing it's another
Nathaniel Nasarow
@Torgian
Jun 30 2016 07:33
oh, i haven't really incorporated that yet
Dan
@dcgoings
Jun 30 2016 07:33
oh!
haha
Nathaniel Nasarow
@Torgian
Jun 30 2016 07:33
it's grabbing data, but I have to figure out how to sort through it and then append it to the page
but I want to work on a coupe of other design elements too
If it's sunny, make a sun pop up, night, moon pops up
Dan
@dcgoings
Jun 30 2016 07:34
as far as sketch, i think i might have obtained that a while back but never used it much. i think i used it to draw with a tablet but that was it.
Egoscio

Jun 30 2016 07:34
@Torgian If you ever plan on getting into iOS, I highly recommend PaintCode as well. They work really well together.
Nathaniel Nasarow
@Torgian
Jun 30 2016 07:34
that sorta thing
@dcgoings I like sketch partly because it's cheap, and I never really needed anything more powerful
Dan

what do you use it for, exactly? just... sketching out ideas/layouts?
Nathaniel Nasarow

i am trying to implement angular ui tree,
Nathaniel Nasarow
@Torgian
Jun 30 2016 07:35
You can use it to make icons in an array of formats, including SVGs, which is important
and can also use it to sketch out ideas
I mostly use paper for that though, for design ideas.
Dan
@dcgoings
Jun 30 2016 07:35
got it
ill check it out again
Nathaniel Nasarow
@Torgian
Jun 30 2016 07:36
@deepakSpatil sorry mate, I don't know much about angular.js
I worked with Angular 2 for a quite a while, but it's still in Beta, and i'm pretty sure the syntax is different. Plus, I was using that in typescript
Egoscio
@Egoscio
Jun 30 2016 07:37
Everyone recommends angular with TS for some reason.
Dan
@dcgoings
Jun 30 2016 07:37
man, getting that image to load on mobile was a huge relief.. im still reveling in it.
Egoscio
@Egoscio
Jun 30 2016 07:37
I had trouble finding non-ts tutorials
Nathaniel Nasarow
@Torgian
Jun 30 2016 07:38
Yeah, you'll have to learn typescript for angular 2
I was working on an app project with a guy here in Taipei, we were going to start up a business togehter
Egoscio
@Egoscio
Jun 30 2016 07:38
Good luck on that! Apps are fun stuff.
Is it angular?
Nathaniel Nasarow
@Torgian
Jun 30 2016 07:39
unfortunately he decided he didn't need me anymore and skipped out, found another partner who actually had a shit load of money and they're beta testing now
yes, Angular 2
Egoscio
@Egoscio
Jun 30 2016 07:39
oh, ouch. You probably have better projects to do anyway
Don't want that kind of business partner :P
Nathaniel Nasarow
@Torgian
Jun 30 2016 07:40
Well, I can understand. Money is important :P Bahahaha. Either way, I don't think the app we were working on is going to do too well in the long run.
@dcgoings enjoy it, now go find another problem to fix :P haha

Why is this not working? Do i need to do something special to get an api to work?
Nathaniel Nasarow
@Torgian
Jun 30 2016 07:41
@dcgoings have you traveled to other countries other than deployments?
@farhanasghar are you using chrome?
Dan
@dcgoings
Jun 30 2016 07:42
@Torgian actually, my next problem is to figure out how i can delete commits that were made on github. im not joking, i made about 20-30 commits in three hours i bet trying different things. i can't let other people see that haha
Nathaniel Nasarow
@Torgian
Jun 30 2016 07:42
@dcgoings Oh, dude, don't worry about that

@farhanasghar Chrome recently updated their browser that won't allow HTML5 locating from a non-secure source

Dan
@dcgoings
Jun 30 2016 07:43
as far as countries... i border canada and been there a bunch but that's it lol. for port visits i saw a bit of france, souda bay, spain, and a ton of dubai and bahrain.
Nathaniel Nasarow
@Torgian
Jun 30 2016 07:44
however, in your address bar, try adding https:// in front of your codepen address
Egoscio

Dan
@dcgoings
Jun 30 2016 07:45
@Egoscio im so far from back-end dev, i dont think i'd benefit whatsoever. and probably overwhelm myself.
Nathaniel Nasarow
@Torgian
Jun 30 2016 07:45
@farhanasghar also, your code works just fine on other browsers, just keep in mind that on Chrome, you'll have to grab location data another way if you're grabbing data from a non-secure source.
Especially important in APIs
Dan
@dcgoings
Jun 30 2016 07:45
that was the plus side to gh-pages to me. it was incredibly straight forward and up and running in minutes.
Nathaniel Nasarow
@Torgian

Do you guys have experience with overflow: hidden; ?
Nathaniel Nasarow
@Torgian
Jun 30 2016 07:50
but got kinda lucky getting those gigs
overflow: hidden is good for hiding elements that are out of view of the window
Dan
@dcgoings
Jun 30 2016 07:51
very nice

hover effects

Nathaniel Nasarow
@Torgian
Jun 30 2016 07:51
hover effects
Nathaniel Nasarow
@Torgian
Jun 30 2016 07:52
you have to add the overflow:hidden to the places where the element is housed
Egoscio
@Egoscio
Jun 30 2016 07:52
So when you click a button, it expands to the entire page.
Dan
@dcgoings

Egoscio
@Egoscio
Jun 30 2016 07:55
when you click a button, it duplicates itself, sets its position to fixed, and animates outwards to fullscreen
@Dansvidania In most cases involving access restrictions, be it CORS or protocol incompatibility, you can try using a proxy.

trying rn
Nathaniel Nasarow
@Torgian

and it'll fix the leak

Jun 30 2016 08:05
You're not using jQuery yet? @dcgoings
Dan
@dcgoings
Jun 30 2016 08:05
very very little
Nathaniel Nasarow
@Torgian
Jun 30 2016 08:05
jQuery is great, but I think knowing how to use vanilla javascript is a good skill to have
Dan

Jun 30 2016 08:05
like, one or two things in my quote gen used it

Nathaniel Nasarow

I agree
just make sure to learn how what you are doing works in vanilla so you know what's going on at least

node, angular, sass, less, etc. i just know they are words that are supposed to make my life better

Jun 30 2016 08:06
Where are we supposed to get random quotes from?
Dan
@dcgoings
Jun 30 2016 08:06
@kevinkuehler you can either make an array of your own or use an API
Egoscio
@Egoscio
Jun 30 2016 08:07
Let me present to you my stack: jQuery, Pug (renamed from Jade) for HTML preprocessing, MongoDB for database (with Mongoose as the ORM), Node as the overall server, express as the HTTP framework
And Stylus, for preprocessing CSS
It's working wonders for me so far.
Dan
@dcgoings
Jun 30 2016 08:07
@kevinkuehler this was mine: http://codepen.io/dcgoings/pen/mEOXwE

Hey mates. I'm on the early stages of the random quote generator, and I've stumbled upon a trivial issue that I can't seem to find the workaround. How do I make my container div stretch (.quote-box) when the content inside of it gets bigger (i.e, a new quote is generated) Here's my work:
http://codepen.io/chermandu/pen/LZWXdG
Sorin Ruse
@sorinr

@alchermd i think ur problem is here:$(".quote").append because after first quote you just continue "append" data instead of replace the old one
John Alcher

Jun 30 2016 09:49
@sorinr Hi. I have
$(".quote").empty();

|Information1||Information2||information3|, And I want it to look like this |Information1| |Information2| |Information3| (the space between)

I'm having trouble with the weather app. Here is my code :

/*Create variables*/
var APPID = "56b64e7ce0164ffeb13f313ed0a8a007";
var temp;
var loc;
var icon;
var humidity;
var country;
var direction;
var description;

function update(weather) {
  icon.src = "http://openweathermap.org/img/w/" + weather.icon + ".png"
  humidity.innerHTML = weather.humidity;
  direction.innerHTML = weather.direction;
  loc.innerHTML = weather.location;
  temp.innerHTML = weather.temp;
  description.innerHTML = weather.description;
   country.innerHTML = weather.country;

}

window.onload = function() {
  temp = document.getElementById("temperature");
  loc = document.getElementById("location");
  icon = document.getElementById("icon");
  humidity = document.getElementById("humidity");
  direction = document.getElementById("direction");
  description = document.getElementById("description");

function ctf() {
  var cel = (temp - 32) * 5/9;
    document.getElementById("temperature").innerHTML = parseInt(cel);
}

The problem is that the background doesn't change and temperature doesn't change to celcius.

Jun 30 2016 12:29
@flindip this line here should not happen until the user does something - right now it does it when the page loads var searchElement = $('#search').val();

@flindip first step is give your button a id like id="searchButton" in the html

$("#searchButton").click(mySearch);

function mySearch (){
  var searchElement = $('#search').val();
  // call api function passing in searchElement
}

now you have a search function that other things like clicks and keypress can be used to call it

Well I have done my quote project a few different ways. Hate how it works each time as it always seems so inelegant, and I hate the colors I myself picked.. but I am leaving it.. Now just to get the twitter bit working and I can finally move on
I realized that I am probably never satisfied with anything I am doing from a code perspective or from a design one. I have awful design sensibilities. I can see such beautiful projects other people have done though and trying to learn off those lol.

@alchermd I saw about 3 different pens all doing the Twitter the same way so I went ahead and copied that format
@harshil1712 I was just talking about the twitter button here. Look at my Pen and how I managed it.
remember to open this pen in full screen and as HTTP or it won't run.
The twitter setup for me is this var tweet = 'https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text=' + quoteData.quoteText + ' Author ' + quoteData.quoteAuthor +' @Akira71';
And then I set my href on the button to that variable here
$('#tweet').attr('href', tweet); };
I literally saw several people doing it this way and it made the most sense to me.

Then I saw it returned JSON so I set it as a callback to retrieving the URL. It is not obvious. I had to dig around online some to find the best way. I bought a few JavaScript books to that helped

Finishing up the functionality in my "Wikipedia Viewer" trying to get the "entries" div to only display when there is a search input. I'm using Jquery to block display in the css until something typed in the input box. Its not responding though:

@gparangan I suggest replacing the "mid-box" with a jumbotron. To make your image responsive, place it inside a row, and set is columns and offsets. For reference, here's my work and try to understand how I got my image to center on every screen size.
http://codepen.io/chermandu/full/PzWOLB/
@aarontaylor You're really helpful, mate. Thank you for explaining it. It's still blurry, like, in the context of our project, how did we get the quote itself and what part of the code made that happen?

@alchermd for me I looked up the JQuery function for it.. Remember they said JQuery can be shortcut with just $ so I used this function to return the JSON "http://api.jquery.com/jquery.getjson/"
JSON, JavaScript Object Notation, is what I saw returned when I pasted the raw quote URL in.
So I associated my click activity on my button to call that JQuery function and return the result of that call (JSON) to a function that took apart the quote and pulled it and the author out
John Alcher
@alchermd
Jun 30 2016 15:37
@aarontaylor if I got it right,
$getJson("www.quotes.com/api", function(x) {
// x is the quote in JSON format
});
Aaron Taylor
@aarontaylor
Jun 30 2016 15:37
It was almost a literal copy of the JQuery documentation for me. I tried it a few ways from that page to try and make it work.
Here is what I did $("#quote").click(function() { $.getJSON(url, getAQuote, 'jsonp'); });

I added the jsonp based on this part of the documentation "JSONP

If the URL includes the string "callback=?" (or similar, as defined by the server-side API), the request is treated as JSONP instead. See the discussion of the jsonp data type in $.ajax() for more details."

John Alcher
@alchermd
Jun 30 2016 15:39
wait, what is the value of getAQuote?
Aaron Taylor
@aarontaylor
Jun 30 2016 15:39
So it forced it to recognize it as JSON essentially. I saw that used a few places, looked it up, found it to be a good practice. But I don't understand everything myself. Just tooling about and trying to do it
John Alcher
@alchermd
Jun 30 2016 15:39
Oh, it's a function. A function for what exactly?
Aaron Taylor
@aarontaylor
Jun 30 2016 15:40
That is a callback function that takes my quote apart
Sets it to a variable so I can use it
John Alcher
@alchermd
Jun 30 2016 15:40
And then you can do stuff with it right
Aaron Taylor
@aarontaylor
Jun 30 2016 15:40
Yes!
Here is it essentially
John Alcher
@alchermd
Jun 30 2016 15:41
Well then, I'm right when I asked if this is correct!
$getJson("www.quotes.com/api", function(x) {
// x is the quote in JSON format
});
Aaron Taylor
@aarontaylor
Jun 30 2016 15:41

```var getAQuote = function(quoteData) {
$(".quote-text").text(quoteData.quoteText);
$(".author-text").text('Author: ' + quoteData.quoteAuthor);
};```
Hmm that isn't formatting correctly.. but there it is
Yes you are correct!
John Alcher
@alchermd
Jun 30 2016 15:42
yahyah it makes more sense now.
John Alcher
Jun 30 2016 15:43
Am I wrong to say that JSON is pretty much the same as a dictionary in python?
Aaron Taylor
@aarontaylor
Jun 30 2016 15:44
Back in school I did a lot of Objective-C as we developed on a Next Step system (yes I am dating myself) and I use that for my native iOS apps now. Just some updates.. and I do Java a fair bit, but not an expert by any means
You are not entirely wrong, and there is a lot of code that just takes a JSON and maps it to a Python dict
John Alcher
@alchermd
Jun 30 2016 15:44
I don't really get what "notation" is in JSON when its pretty much a key value pair
Aaron Taylor
@aarontaylor
Jun 30 2016 15:45
Internally there is a difference, but ideologically there are similar.
Dictionary is a little more strict. JSONP would be the more strict for of JSON if I am correct. I may not be.
JSON can be more that a simple key/value pair unfortunately. But mostly that is correct
Hey all, I'm trying to get my quote machine to work, but my API call isn't working. I get this error message in developer tools:
//jquery-2.2.4.min.js:4 Mixed Content: The page at 'https://codepen.io/thiggs/pen/BjMdyz' was loaded over HTTPS, but requested an insecure XMLHttpRequest endpoint 'http://quotesondesign.com/wp-json/posts?filter[orderby]=rand&filter[posts_per_page]=1'. Gosh I don't mean to make it sound that way. For instance there are areas I can go in and do certain kinds of work and the code just flows. It is easy for me. I love it and eat it up.. and other areas like JAvaScript where I struggle.
Easy to get syntax yes.. Easier to learn a new language than when I started.. definitely.. but it takes time to get good at that language and how it is used idiomatically. For isntance JavaScript and its' high use of anonymous functions.
Hmm let me load your pen
If only I could take back time and pick python as my first introduction to programming. I shaved a lot of months after quitting javascript cause of the freaking syntax.
So I took a few intro courses on python and then ruby. Javascript doesn't look scary anymore.
@Thiggs I see it s. Change it like this on your Web URL up top from "https://codepen.io/thiggs/pen/BjMdyz" to "http://codepen.io/thiggs/pen/BjMdyz"
@alchermd the key is sticking to development. The core principals are timeless. Sure some things change, but honest to god learn the fundamentals and you can do well in any language.
@Thiggs here is what you have in your callback $('.text').html('test')
I'm having a strange issue with my Wikipedia Viewer. I think I may just be fighting with Codepen. Last night I received an error to the effect that I was trying to allow-top-navigation when in a sandbox environment. I added <base target="_blank"> to the HTML head to try and address the error message. I no longer get the error, but my page still won't behave in Full Page or Details View. It works fine in Editor or Debug. I've tried https vs http, and even forked it and created an iframe so I could add sandbox="allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-forms allow-top-navigation" to the iframe. Clearly I'm in over my head. Non-functional on trying to submit user entry from form directly to Wikipedia view: http://codepen.io/willed/full/dXWPpR/ --- working http://s.codepen.io/willed/debug/dXWPpR . Appreciate any insights. TIA
