@tbc13315 It's working for me. You are getting an error in the console though because jquery needs to be listed before jqueryUI in the JS section of your codepen settings.

Jul 07 2016 00:05
Yeah I got it to work now, but it wasn't when the variable APICall was defined outside the searchWiki function.
And i thought that APICAll would be a global variable, so I could define it outside the searchWiki function and call it within the function and it should work. But it didn't. That's what I can't get my head around.
Tyler Moeller
@TylerMoeller
Jul 07 2016 00:10
@tbc13315 Ahh, I see. Yeah, that variable won't be "global" unless you define it outside of all other functions, including your document.ready(function()). Right now, the only code that knows about it is inside your function searchWiki()

Let me just post what I'm talking about so it's clear.
This works:
function searchWiki() {
var APIcall= "http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=search&format=json&srprop=snippet&callback=?&srsearch=" + $("#search").val();
$.ajax({
  url: APIcall,
  dataType: 'jsonp',
  type: 'GET',
  success: function(json){
    $('#resultsHere').empty();
    var listResults =json.query.search;
    var html='';...........rest of code.
but this doesn't: $(document).ready(function(){
var APIcall= "http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=search&format=json&srprop=snippet&callback=?&srsearch=" + $("#search").val();
function searchWiki() {
$.ajax({
url: APIcall,
dataType: 'jsonp',
type: 'GET',
success: function(json){
$('#resultsHere').empty();
var listResults =json.query.search;
Tyler Moeller
@TylerMoeller
Jul 07 2016 00:14
@tbc13315 Yes, and if you put APIcall outside of the searchWiki() function, your .ajax call will fail
tbc13315
@tbc13315
Jul 07 2016 00:15
But I don't understand why? if it's defined outside the function doesn't that make it "global" and should work when called within a function?
Or am I just way off base and completely getting the "global" and "local" wrong?
Tyler Moeller
@TylerMoeller
Jul 07 2016 00:18
@tbc13315 When you press enter, you are going directly to the searchWiki() function and not adding anything to the APIcall variable before. So, the search is blank.
@tbc13315 This shows how to make it work with the variable outside of that function: http://codepen.io/TylerMoeller/pen/kXoLqB?editors=0010

Hey everyone. I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out with the personal portfolio segment of the basic front end developer projects. I'm wondering as to how I would go about with changing the visuals of my bootstrap navbar when I click on a different option.
Like, I want to (visually) disable my inactive bars, while keeping the one the user is on active.
could someone tell me why my code isn't displaying and why i have an "unexpected token ." for my "$.getJSON"?

Jul 07 2016 01:29
@dguh - you need something here: $("#submitButton").on("click", function( such as ){ to open the callback function for the click.
@dguh - and also the data.#.# that you have does not look right?
@dguh document.getElementByID should be document.getElementById

Jul 07 2016 02:00
@dguh - I found several other problems, although it's still not working (for me) but I'm getting to the point, now, where it is trying to submit a request. For example, you had onchange as an event, I think for the input element, it should be oninput. The ID value on the form was causing it to fail reading the text from your search input box, that ID should be on the input. In your JS, you have to watch the scope of your variables - defining var quoteText inside one function does not allow other functions to access it because of the scoping of the variables.
William Cabell
@wbac88
Jul 07 2016 02:04
@SlouchingToast I completely understand. It takes a few times of just going back and reviewing the lessons for the subjects that you need to try. Also take a look at Codecademy's sections on HTML and CSS to help get you started, too.
@SlouchingToast Just try to go piece by piece. Figure out how to add a picture. Then figure out how to add some text underneath. It's kind of like writing, just get something on the page and then at least you can work with it.

@crossrichards either. I used bootstrap, but most of the formatting I did wiht my own CSS. Use what you think you need to get hte job done. KNow that over time you should learn enough CSS that you can replicate what bootstrap is doing for most circumstances too.

@dguh - I made a number of changes, and rather than try to document everything else (since I might miss something) I just forked your codepen project and here is the link: wikipedia help you can take a look. One of the things that I did at the end was add another $.ajax call, since I had an example of that tucked away, and it seems to fetch data. Your getJSON call is also still there, but that doesn't work. I hope that you can make sense out of what I changed - good luck!

@QueenCode - i like the "add" feature - I think that it would be a nice touch to clear that input box after the name is added. Also, I've seen many other projects that put the user's avatar on there - I don't know if there are requirements for that as I haven't done this project yet, just started to play with it. But I think it looks good. The snapshot of the users' on-line activity is cool, I haven't seen that.

@JacobStewart1 - palindrome challenge - still stuck? Your replace function call is not correct - you should check the docs on that. I think that that is the biggest problem, oh, and as @goyalruchi90 pointed out, you have to provide a join character, such as '' to specify joining with nothing between each character.

@QueenCode I think that to clear the input textbox, you can just put some javascript code in there to select the box and clear it, something like this: document.getElementById('textfield1').value = ""; Or something similar in jquery, I'm sure. If that was the solution you were looking for...

@QueenCode Maybe you should make it so FreeCodeCamp can't be removed from the list. I tried to remove all of the users, but it wouldn't let me delete the last one. If one can't be deleted, it should be FCC. Also, I shouldn't be able to add the same user more then once. Check out Array.prototype.indexOf(). I like your help modal.

Hey guys I have a .php contact form and I’d like to access it from my main index.html site.

I want to have a button on my index.html page that says “Contact” and then when you click on it javascript/jquery opens a modal window which contains the .php form. I looked on stack overflow but nothing seems to have worked. I even tried using an iframe to play around but it didn’t work the way I wanted it.

Anyone know a site where I can reference the right Jquery? (Click on a button, external .php contact form is loaded on the same page as index.html)

anyone out there can explain to me how to convert binary into "western alphabet"? Like this is the original problem:

function binaryAgent(str) {
  return str;
}

binaryAgent("01000001 01110010 01100101 01101110 00100111 01110100 00100000 01100010 01101111 01101110 01100110 01101001 01110010 01100101 01110011 00100000 01100110 01110101 01101110 00100001 00111111");

If I convert one of these numbers with String.fromCharcode the following will be returned

  console.log(String.fromCharCode('01000001', '01110010', '01100101'));
  //returns 䉁쥅

I'm pretty sure the text should be something comprehensible in english, as stated initially in the exercise.

What am i missing?

Daniel González Reina
@dgrcode
Jul 07 2016 16:48
@St3ps it doesn't work because you are giving it a text instead of a number. The text is parsed to a number, and then String.fromCharCode() is returning the letter assigned to that number
@St3ps You should parse the number to decimal numbers first
@St3ps To parse the string to integer you should do parseInt( '01000001', 2 );, then if you call String.fromCharCode() giving as parameter the result of parseInt(), you will have the character that you are looking for ;)
Joel Santos
@St3ps
Jul 07 2016 16:57
@Danoso89 Yeap! Alright, so, the parseInt('01000001, 2) converts the binary value into a decimal value, right?

@Harry97 Regarding the dropdown, check Bootstrap documentation. I had this issue before, and in my case the problem was that I didn't have jquery inside my code. I've seen that you have it already

Hello everyone, i cant solve 2 things in my Random Quotes program: 1) How can i dark the background image? Something like opacity? 2) I applied oppacity to a collumn, but the fonts inside it got the same oppacity, how can i solve that?
Justin
@jhadams82
Jul 07 2016 17:53
@kikosalguero to darken the background, you could create a <div> and stretch it across 100% of the height and width and give it opacity. or you could just edit the image.

for avoiding text having the opacity, i think what you're looking for is rgba(). instead of setting "opacity: 0.6", set "background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.6);"
i just tried it in your pen, seems to work. that limits the opacity to just the background color and not everything in the div
well, lunch hour over. happy coding, everybody! good luck @kikosalguero

Alright, so I got that syntax stuff fixed. So, I'm doing the "Twitch.tv Json Api" project. I have pretty much a rough draft of it. I'm just finishing up the JS.

Can someone take a look at it and see what I'm perhaps overlooking? I can get the online users to display but the offline (nor the nonexistent)are not displaying.

@rodiw Hey there. One thing you could try doing is putting both inside one container (you've got nested containers, which should never happen. Not sure what you're trying to accomplish there.), and then give each section the class "col-lg-6", so that way they will take up half the width
Jonathan Mitchell
@Vanhealen
Jul 07 2016 19:11
@pradxj07 then the link would be under the tweet right?
Brooks Van Buren
@woofiewilly
Jul 07 2016 19:11
@rodiw Either that, or I believe you can simply add the css: width:50% and each one will take up 50% the width of whatever it's contained inside
Pradnya Joshi
@pradxj07
Jul 07 2016 19:14
@Vanhealen, it would be something like - ```$('#para').append('<a href="#">Click me</a>');
where #para is the p element
Brooks Van Buren

anybody know why this doesn’t work?
$(".userbutton").on("click", function(event){
    event.preventDefault();
   // let usertext = $(".userbutton").html() //latest user that comes us
    //console.log("usertext: " + usertext)
  //  let user = $(".userbutton").attr("user")
    let user = this.attr("user") //this user click
   // console.log("user : " + user)
   // console.log(streams.users[usertext])

    })
 $(".userbutton").on("click", function(event){
    event.preventDefault();
        let user = this.attr("user") //this user click
        })
bottom one
something about syntax being wrong

@Vanhealen add ; after let user = this.attr("user")

thats not it
maybe my callback has (event) in it
it says this.attr is not a function

@flindip call that function inside the else if(data.stream === null)
@flindip also you have to change it (no for loop necessary) since you'll call it after the data comes in one by one

@flindip well you are only making a call if the data.stream is null for a given channel, you need to do it one by one

@youngjeong46 for loops will run too quickly when you're calling a remote API. Use a forEach with a callback. Replace your for loop with:
    list.forEach(function(item, i) {
greg
@wearenotgroot
Jul 07 2016 22:38
@youngjeong46 the response from the api will not be guaranteed to return immediate(asynchronous function)

@flindip not a variable a function parameter -------->offlineUsers(url, i)
@flindip -----> $.getJSON(url, function(data2){ });

function offlineUsers(url, i){

       $.getJSON(url, function(data2){

@wearenotgroot I'm just curious, how does JSON know the URL? is it pulling it from the parent displayUser function?
greg
@wearenotgroot
Jul 07 2016 23:11
@flindip you passed the url when you called that function on line 29
the url is from the data you got from the previous api call(/stream) when the stream is null
