Hey guys, I need some help quick. I am trying to just get the textbox to return the value I typed. When I type in a value it displays it for me, but only for a second, then it goes away. http://codepen.io/lukenetti3/pen/akwEQk?editors=0010

return false at the end of searchEntry function
you need to prevent default actions of searchButton

@lsgoulart Oh I think I get it. Since the default action of that section of text is blank, it goes back to that after the function is run?
Leonardo Goulart
@lsgoulart
Jul 10 2016 01:10 UTC
the default action of the button is submit your form
Luke
@lukenetti3
Jul 10 2016 01:11 UTC
@lsgoulart Should I change it then?
Leonardo Goulart
@lsgoulart
Jul 10 2016 01:11 UTC
the action of form is submit some data to server, this cause page reload/refresh
no, you should keep it that way
its a good practice keep the input within form
if you want to keep the form action
you can listen to submit event of form
Luke
@lukenetti3
Jul 10 2016 01:14 UTC
@lsgoulart What do you mean by listen to submit event of form? Also, isn't my input within my form?
Leonardo Goulart

something like this: http://codepen.io/anon/pen/zBEPYw
Luke

var Person = function(firstAndLast) {

  var firstName = nameArray[0];
  var lastName = nameArray[1];

  return {

      "getFirstName": function() {

      "setLastName": function(last) {

                         lastName = last;
                     },
      "setFullName": function(firstAndLast) {

                         var array = firstAndLast.split(" ");

                         firstName = array[0];
                         lastName = array[1];
                     }
  };
};

var bob = new Person('Bob Ross');
bob.getFullName();
All the tests pass except that > bob instanceof Person ....returns false. I've been reading the object documentation and don't understand why this does not return true. Does anyone here know what I'm doing wrong?

@CruftMaster make 4 divs, one for each "button". give them each a unique ID and a background-color. then you can use jQuery to handle their click events, passing in their ID.

@AaronHanna Hi. I think your problem is that you have placed your functions for "get' and "set" in a return statement. I'm not sure why this is forcing bob instanceof(Person) to return false, but I suggest that you remove the return closure and rewrite your functions using "this." For example, this.getFirstName = function(){ return firstName } . I just put your code up on repl.it and ran it using the change and bob instanceof(Person) returned true.

      return node.classList //return a list for sure
    }  else {

    }
  }
  return findNode(document.body.childNodes[1])
}

var result = getElementsByClassName("tweetHome");
var expectedNodeList = document.getElementsByClassName("tweetHome");
var expectedArray = Array.prototype.slice.apply(expectedNodeList);
var equality = _.isEqual(result, expectedArray);

if (_.isEqual(result, expectedArray)) {
    console.log("You win");
} else {
  console.log("You Lose")
}

Hello guys, I started FCC few days ago and I'm now building the sample project of Front End Development section. I am trying to build the exact replica of this sample website: https://codepen.io/FreeCodeCamp/full/YqLyXB/

My question is, how can I make that page kind of section in the middle of webpage? I have changed the background but I am facing problem to develop the mid part(where the portfolio and the guy's picture is) I tried creating div and changing the background color but that does not work well Any suggestions?

@NixonRichard if you're still working on your quote problem: your quotes are being appended onto the end of your container (they're not overwriting your previous quotes, they're just being added on), as far as always calling the same quote, I except that you're program is caching the last call. Maybe try disabling that,
Erik

Freya Sheer Hardwick

I use ajax so the cache problem is easy to solve (you just set cache:false) but, with .getJSON I think you can either globally disable cache (probably not good practice) or you can time stamp your call requests so they are always unique and thus a new call is always done.
your appending problem is caused by using ("#text").append. I suggest looking for another way to write to an element (I use .innerHTML on a getElementById when I write to elements)
NixonRichard
@NixonRichard
Jul 10 2016 14:23 UTC
 $("#text").innerHTML(a[0].content + "<p>— " + a[0].title + "</p>")

Freya Sheer Hardwick
@FreyaRhianna
Jul 10 2016 14:25 UTC
@NixonRichard I don't think .innerHTML works with elements that you get with $('blah')
I know you can use .text. So $("#text").text, but it wont change the html so <p> will just appear in plain text on your page
it might be easier to just use document.getElementById('text').innerHTML
look up the documentation for it

If you’re using something like jQuery, it can use the content with it’s own fancy callback magic, like this:

$.getJSON("http://quotesondesign.com/wp-json/posts?filter[orderby]=rand&filter[posts_per_page]=1&callback=", function(a) {
$("body").append(a[0].content + "<p>— " + a[0].title + "</p>")

@NixonRichard I think your .getJson is caching the call. I stopped that in mine by disabling the cache, but I use $.ajax so the syntax and functionality is slightly different. You'll have to look around on google (or ask someone who's not me :P) to work out how to stop it from caching. I think if there's a way of adding a time stamp to your call so it will always be unique .
@Krish2704 @NixonRichard the link is fine. He's calling the api that will only return one object at a time, but if you put it up in the browser, every time you refresh you get a new quote
NixonRichard
@NixonRichard

@NixonRichard your api url is in the correct place. I just meant that if you copy and paste the URL, you can see that the link returns a random object. Your problem is that your program has made the call once and then gone "for efficiency, I'll hold onto this". Then, when it's called again, it goes "I've already got this object. Here you go" But what YOU want is for a new call to be made so a new object is returned. To do that, you'll have to find a way to disable cache or trick your .getjson into believing that it's a completely new call. But I use .ajax, which means I just had to write cache:false. I don't know how to stop caching with .getJSON

Hey there, is anyone up to help me with that random quote generator? All those functions from the "JSON API and Ajax" Chapter won't work with the json response I receive. I have no idea on how to access the keys/values of that object -> http://codepen.io/datnewcudi/pen/rLGJRx?editors=0110

@lau-b cause you didn't add jquery UI in your js panel, I'm getting an error in console, $ not defined

Erik
@erik-sn
Jul 10 2016 14:51 UTC
@FreyaRhianna and @NixonRichard, it's kind of a hack but you can avoid cacheing by using a useless url parameter, like http://ipaddress/api/getdata?useless={new Date();}
where useless changes for every call

@lau-b well it's working as far as it gets one quote
what's the url to the old one?
Dylan
@dhcodes
Jul 10 2016 15:24 UTC
@lau-b it results in a cross origin error, you can get it to work if you append https://crossorigin.me/ to the beginning of the url
but you'll need to change the code you use to access the quote
since it's a diff. object than your current link
Laurin
@lau-b

I guessed that, I'll try to make it work after I finished the design :)

hey guys, I have a question about the front-end portfolio project
In my navbar, when I use class="active" it highlights the current tab item but when I click on other tab items, they won't highlight, also my hamburger button isn't expanding when clicked.....based on these two issues I know I'm having animation issues, possibly with my script tags?

Hey guys, quick question. I'm having issues with Chrome displaying a fade in effect for my links in my navbar; the effects work fine in Edge so I'm not sure what the issue might be. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Link to code in question: http://codepen.io/Azraith/pen/KMaeXX

@dbaird987 in order to highlight the selected tab you have to do that with jQuery "addClass("active") to your element.

Can anyone help with the TwitchTV project? I have the online/offline accounts working fine, but I can't get the inactive accounts to display. They don't pass through JSON, so something like "data.status==422" doesn't work, and splicing out the online/offline accounts and printing the remaining ones doesn't consistently work because of asynchronous issues, so I'm pretty lost.

hey folks, anyone able to help me figure out why my code for Diff Two Arrays is not working? My accepted solution from Dec. 2015 no longer works. Here's a slightly modified version of my soln, but the logic is the same
//jshint asi:true, esversion:6
function diff(arr1, arr2) {
  return arr1.filter(n => !arr2.includes(n))
    .concat(arr2.filter(n => !arr1.includes(n)))
}

//diff([1, 2, 3, 5], [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]);
diff(["diorite", "andesite", "grass", "dirt", "pink wool", "dead shrub"], ["diorite", "andesite", "grass", "dirt", "dead shrub"]);

Chris Rutherford
@cjrutherford
Jul 10 2016 21:20 UTC
a little bit, I wanted to use the id codes from the API to determine the image. Better than my original idea of a different image per code, now just a different background based off the class of code. I think I may reimplement this as an if though
Harry Adel
@harryadel
Jul 10 2016 21:26 UTC
@cjrutherford dude, it works

any interest in watching a FCC Twitch API Project stream?

  • locally developed from start to finish
  • will embed live Twitch video and chat
  • will be pushed to a gh-pages branch on github - you'll be able to visit the final project
  • vanilla JS with ES6 syntax - developed on a Chrome 51 browser
  • engage - ask questions / offer feedback
  • bring your own music - I won't capture the music I'll be streaming (also means no mic)

this will take an estimated 1 - 2 hours. planning on stream start in about 25 minutes at https://www.twitch.tv/droopfizzle

Jul 10 2016 22:18 UTC

first create a hyperlink that'd take the user to an id like this
<a href="#about-me">About</a></li>

Okay... I'm really not understanding CORS... How do I stop it from returning No 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header is present on the requested resource. Origin 'http://codepen.io' is therefore not allowed access. in random quote machine

then basically wrap your about me area in a div and then give it the attribute you want
and in my example it'd be ofc id="about-me

Jul 10 2016 22:20 UTC

Harry Adel
@harryadel
Jul 10 2016 22:23 UTC
@leykhins OH so sry
remove the "#" from the div's id
you only need it when you are referencing it
not when naming it
@CodeTilCoding Please let us take a look at your codepen
and let's see if we can do something about it ^^
same thing with the home button
@leykhins They know work just fine with me

hi guys, anybody knows why my input label works fine on codepen and doesn't act the same way on my self host? I guess it's something related to material design cause even the social button on the bottom right isn't working as expected http://spectrestudio.coolpage.biz/projects/wikisearch/

@uniforlyff so sry mixed u with philipp
@pnahratow yeah I should've done it's just even tho the project is working now I don't really know what was holding us
as you may know I'm trying to figure a solution with @cjrutherford so I got confused sry
Philipp Nahratow
@pnahratow
Jul 10 2016 23:19 UTC
@Harry97 I guess the problem is just that ip-api.com doesn't offer encryption using https://ip-api.com. I don't know why, though.
but If you could load the json via https the error would disappear

@harryadel

@Harry97 in short. if you visit. https://ip-api.com you get site not found. Which sucks.
Harry Adel
@harryadel
Jul 10 2016 23:22 UTC
but if I removed the "s"
it works
Philipp Nahratow
@pnahratow
Jul 10 2016 23:23 UTC
@Harry97 or to put it differently if you want to use https you cant use ip-api
Philipp Nahratow

can anyone take a second and look at this? https://codepen.io/lenmacrae/pen/PzjAPw
the images in the portfolio section go over the fixed header, but everything else looks proper
Harry Adel
@harryadel
Jul 10 2016 23:29 UTC
@lenmacrae try to add z-index: 0; to your images
and z-index: 1; to your header and see if this helps
lenmacrae
@lenmacrae
Jul 10 2016 23:31 UTC
hmm, doesn't seem to make any difference
the images in the about and contact sections do work the way I want
Harry Adel
@harryadel
Jul 10 2016 23:32 UTC
OH
remove the position relative from both
image-left and image-right

Harry Adel
@harryadel
Jul 10 2016 23:34 UTC
and just one more thing
you are over complicating things when it comes to the image positioning
I understand this is ur 1st project but you know
make sure to get back to it and see how to minimize some of that css code^^
lenmacrae
@lenmacrae
Jul 10 2016 23:37 UTC
yeah, will do. I was messing with a bunch of different stuff to see if it would help but didn't find the right css
Harry Adel
@harryadel
Jul 10 2016 23:38 UTC
