Hey guys I'm working on the random quote machine and having trouble making http requests to the api I'm using. I downloaded a CORS enabler extension which fixed the problem but it's only temporary and so I would like a more permanent solution.
XMLHttpRequest cannot load http://api.forismatic.com/api/1.0/?method=getQuote&format=json&jsonp=parseQuote&lang=en. No 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header is present on the requested resource. Origin 'http://s.codepen.io' is therefore not allowed access.
This is the error that I get without using the CORS enabler
I've spent over an hour reading up on CORS already but still can't figure it out

@gonzalezi2 Yeah, your URL to the API is incorrect. Try it like this:
  $.ajax({
      url: '//api.forismatic.com/api/1.0/',
      jsonp: 'jsonp',
      dataType: 'jsonp',
      data: {
        method: 'getQuote',
        lang: 'en',
        format: 'jsonp',
      },
        success:

@gonzalezi2 Unfortunately, the forismatic API is not very well documented. It's not your fault :)
You'll get to work with much better APIs after the quote machine that are fully documented with lots more examples to help you get started.
The easiest way to get a random quote with that API is documented here (right-click, view source): http://api.forismatic.com/api/jsonp/
Ivan
@gonzalezi2
Jul 15 2016 00:15
@TylerMoeller Yeah that's how I got the url that I got before
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://api.forismatic.com/api/1.0/?method=getQuote&amp;format=jsonp&amp;jsonp=parseQuote"></script>
This specifically
I don't see anything else that shows me the code that you wrote though
Tyler Moeller
@TylerMoeller
Jul 15 2016 00:15
@gonzalezi2 I see. So the challenge is deconstructing that URL into an ajax call. The easier way to do it is to simply embed that url as a script like they did at http://api.forismatic.com/api/jsonp/
That's all that JSONP does to work around CORS requests

Ivan

Jul 15 2016 00:17
@TylerMoeller Yeah I just wasn't sure how to add it so that it would generate a new quote each time. The API exercises did not prepare me for this since it was just "take this code and insert here"

Jul 15 2016 00:18
@gonzalezi2 Here's a fairly simpler $.ajax call if it helps understand the code I pasted above:
  $.ajax({
      url: 'http://api.forismatic.com/api/1.0/?method=getQuote&format=jsonp&lang=en',
      jsonp: 'jsonp',
      dataType: 'jsonp',
    })
Ivan
@gonzalezi2
Jul 15 2016 00:20
That looks fairly familiar to what I wrote originally, except I'm missing the jsonp: 'jsonp', part. What does that do exactly that's different than the dataType: 'jsonp', ?
Tyler Moeller
@TylerMoeller
Jul 15 2016 00:22
@gonzalezi2 That overrides the callback=? parameter for CORS/JSONP, this yet a simpler view:
  $.ajax({
      url: 'http://api.forismatic.com/api/1.0/?method=getQuote&format=jsonp&lang=en&jsonp=?',
      dataType: 'jsonp',
    })

            navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(function(position) {
         var long = position.coords.longitude;
         var latt = position.coords.latitude;
        });
      }
 var weatherData =  $.getJSON("api.openweathermap.org/data/2.5/weather?lat=" + latt + "&lon=" + long + "&appid=ca1580d2338e3d7f84fec44abbe30b11");

My footer seems to have a section between my divider and actual content that does not have the background color assigned correction. I'm not sure what exactly is causing this. Also. @crossoveranx - I just saw your reply - you can use everything that you can use on your own site, and CodePen gives a lot of quick ways to add them. As I said, you have to know how to do these things anyway, but any (well, most) external sites can load into a page on CodePen - and there are easy ways to add them. For example, to add font-awesome, for example, go to a CSS config panel external resource and type font-awesome - it will pop up a quick link that you can add. There are shortcuts for bootstrap, jquery, and lots of others. IT's a pretty handy tool, although not everyone is enamored with it. I like it pretty well.

Ken Haduch

Jul 15 2016 01:44
@nickeyvee - are you trying to use Bootstrap? It looks like you have bootstrap.js loaded, but not jquery.js (which is required), and you aren't loading bootstrap.css, but using similar class names. Just trying to figure out what direction you are trying to go. Bootstrap navbar (with the correct classes) fills the width of the screen.

heres my code
do i need an .each() method or something?

@khaduch I thought it would be a good idea to use bootstrap to structure out my navbar and their locations on the webpage in the order relative to the nav bar. I'm not sure where to implement it here and my elements are ending up all over the place.

@JackEdwardLyons You'd have to append to the existing value rather than overwriting it on every click.
$(".numbers .btn").on("click", function() {
  $("input").val($("input").val()+$(this).val());
});

Jul 15 2016 02:34
@EO11110 The only way to do it with codepen is with a URL. You can save the fonts in codepen without a Pro Account. To be honest, google fonts is a really easy way to use custom fonts: https://fonts.google.com
I can't access 1001fontfaces.com
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Jul 15 2016 02:35
@EO11110 - I think that if you import a font from a site, it is downloaded on your local system, and not necessarily in a location where it can be accessed by a different site - for example, if you use Google fonts, you have access to the font files out on the web - if 1001fontfaces.com has a way to link directly to their site (in a manner similar to googlefonts) then you might get it to work. But if it depends on files that you have on your local computer, then you probably won't get it working via CodePen

@EO11110 Yes, it's difficult to use custom fonts in codepen as @khaduch says. You may be able to download them, put them in a gh-pages repo on github, and then access them from there in codepen, but that's going to be a lot of instructions without any repos set up yet :)

You can use it to insert something into an array at a specific index. To do you this you would write array.splice(index, 0, yourItemToAdd); The 0 means to delete 0 things at the index, because you only want to add something
@crisayala16 So if you get the index of "Little red corvette," just use .splice() to put your item at that index - 1

No 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header is present on the requested resource. Origin 'http://s.codepen.io' is therefore not allowed access.

You know you are really in a weird situation. Technically you would put that JSON file onto your server and read it from there
Pericles
@periman2
Jul 15 2016 05:24
I used another api in the beginning but it didn't have automatically random quotes so I switched to this one
the other one worked though
in order to do that I need to make a server on my pc though ? no free apis that will allow codepen?

});
});
Pericles
@periman2
Jul 15 2016 06:08
yes the bypass doesn't really work

Hey fellas. I'm pretty sure I'm missing something here. I'm currently solving
https://www.freecodecamp.com/challenges/arguments-optional
and I think I already got the working solution. But one of the conditions to pass is

function addTogether() {
    .....
}
addTogether(2)(3); // should return 5.

How does addTogether(2)(3) even work as a function with arguments? If I understood it correctly, it's calling the addTogether function then passing it the argument of 2)(3 which is afaik not a valid value. Where am I wrong?

@alchermd - it is correct to have that form of addTogether(2)(3) at least in JavaScript. What you have to write in the function addTogether is an algorithm that detects the number of arguments that are passed to the function. If there are two, and they are both valid numeric values, you add them together and return the result. If there is only one argument (you have to use the arguments object) and it is a valid numeric value, you have to return a function that (a) encloses the original single argument via closure to save it for the subsequent call and (b) checks for a valid argument when the function that you've created and returned is called, and adds it to the original argument.

If you don't understand the concept of closures and returning functions, this article on closures might be helpful. I have also written some helpful (at least, in my opinion) notes and an example of returning a function that does this type of addition, separating that from the slightly more complicated aspect of this problem. If you're still having trouble with this, and would like to see that additional note that I wrote, I can re-post it here.

@periman2 but if you want to use this variable outside your $.getJSON function, then you should declare it before the function (to be outside of the function's scope)

@IMDhruv @sorinr the problem is that the JSON response from the API has all the wiki article related stuff in one key-value pair. The way it is now I can't see any other way but to look for a way to parse that value and look for specific markers that would indicate that it is an article or something and then construct a link out of it. I thought there would be a simpler way :)
Sorin Ruse
@sorinr
Jul 15 2016 12:02
@hvuntokrul your json.query.pages returns only the exact page. if you use this api call you will have more results returnd by the api: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?gsrsearch=".$str."&generator=search&action=query&gsrnamespace=0&prop=extracts|pageimages&pilimit=max&exintro&explaintext&exsentences=1&exlimit=max&format=json";

Also, I tried you app and it does not work :) the console log says "vue-resource.min.js:7 [VueResource warn]: The success method has been deprecated. Use the then method instead." Well, the problem is in the vue.js thing, not with your code as far as I understand :)
@camilaavilarinho one other trick people told me that helped with this particular assignment is to add '&callback=?' at the end of the Wiki's API query link

@juankisr its ok. it happens also to me, as my mother language its not english, but i always try to reformulate my questions in a manner they are finally understood. The best way to speak is just through the code itself like: i want my element #myid to behave like ..... or something like this

Ok, thanks for the tips!
What I want is that if the .header div has a height of 800px for example, the background image occupies the same high, to contain all elements of the div with the background image behind. And to repeat the behavior in different resolutions.
I don't know if I explain myself very well.
That is, the div changes its height depending on the content, but not the background image.

Jul 15 2016 14:55
@juankisr now i got the idea. but working with imgs its one of the trickiest things because images behave differently in terms of width and height because of the width/height ratio . if you want to make an image 800px you will have to leave the width on "auto" to maintain the same aspect ratio, otherwise it may appear distorted

@Wo1v3r Foundation is a nice alternative to bootstrap. Once you figure out bootstrap, you'll notice a lot of similarities between other frameworks. Preferences may come down to the UI design alone - button shapes and sizes, hover cards, typography, and other components. For a comparison:

I figured out how to populate an input field using buttons but it's only working when I specify each specific button. I'd like to make it generic and fill with each button's value. Can someone tell me if this is possible? This is what I think it would look like
  $(".btn").click(function() {
    $("#inptFld").val($("#inptFld").val() + $(".btn").val());
  });
});
this doesn't currently work

Jul 15 2016 18:26
@lhovee you mean like a placeholder="Type here your value" ?. or when you click a certain button to have a certain input field value modified?
Luke
@lhovee
Jul 15 2016 18:31
@sorinr when you click a certain button to have an input field value modified
Sorin Ruse
@sorinr
Jul 15 2016 18:36
@lhovee so like<button onclick="chageValue()"> and in js you will have function changeValue(){$(myinputeindetificator).val(here you put your modified val)} ?
Luke
@lhovee
Jul 15 2016 18:38
@sorinr yeah but I'm trying to keep the click event in the JS using jQuery. Here is my pen. The individual button input isn't even working now. I don't know how I messed it up.
http://codepen.io/lhovee/pen/QEORvV
Luke
@lhovee
Jul 15 2016 18:43
and also I can't just strong arm the value to be whatever I want. I have to be able to append to the values already in the input field
Sorin Ruse
@sorinr
Jul 15 2016 18:46
@lhovee i think your logic is wrong. when you press any btn like 1-9 for testing you made it add 7 but your code here: $("#inptFld").val($("#inptFld").val() does nothing but replacing same value to #inputfield. think where you r wrong
Luke
@lhovee
Jul 15 2016 18:49
@sorinr I can change the from .btn to #7 and that should fix the 1-9 btn issue
@sorinr I'm not sure what the solution for the second part of your comment is though. Maybe $("#inptFld").val()+'7' ?
Sorin Ruse
@sorinr
Jul 15 2016 18:50
@lhovee i think you don't read what i said here: $("#inptFld").val($("#inptFld").val() does nothing but replacing same value to #inputfield.
Luke
@lhovee
Jul 15 2016 18:52
@sorinr ahhh I think I see what you are saying. Is there an append capability in jQuery?
@sorinr I'm struggling to figure out how to make this work. Can you point me in the right direction?
Sorin Ruse
@sorinr
Jul 15 2016 18:58
@lhovee so, by using: $("#inptFld").val($("#inptFld").val() you would actually want to update the first $("#inptFld").val() with the previous value plu/minus/multiply/divide of the new input value?
Luke
@lhovee
Jul 15 2016 19:01
@sorinr no right now I'm just looking to insert multiple items into the input field
for instance clicking btns 7 and 8 and 9 would result in '789' in the input field
Sorin Ruse
@sorinr
Jul 15 2016 19:02
@lhovee then use append
Luke
@lhovee
Jul 15 2016 19:02
I'm trying that now. would it look like
  $("#7").click(function() {
    $("#inptFld").append($("#inptFld").val(), '7');
  });
Sorin Ruse
@sorinr
Jul 15 2016 19:05
@lhovee i think it could be like $("#inptFld").append('7');
Luke
@lhovee
Jul 15 2016 19:07
@sorinr I think there must be an error in my code somewhere because I can't get that to work. I even tried just resetting the value and it populates but then immediately disappears. I've been searching but can't find anything. Can you take a look and see if there is some bug in my code?
http://codepen.io/lhovee/pen/QEORvV
Sorin Ruse
@sorinr
Jul 15 2016 19:11
@lhovee get rid of <form></form> and let your input. when you press enter or any other key is trying to submit your <form>. you don't need a form here. you just nead an iput field to get values and then manipulate them
Tyler
@Thiggs
Jul 15 2016 19:11
@lhovee I'm not sure if maybe because it has something to do with the form element?
I just had it push it as html into a div
Luke

Jul 15 2016 19:13

@cjrutherford
Jul 15 2016 20:19
@mcnalj got it working finally
So, another question.... this code works for the first check, but not the second for 'Wherefore art thou'

function whatIsInAName(collection, source) {
  // What's in a name?
  var arr = [];
  // Only change code below this line
  var key = Object.keys(source);
  var value = source[key];
  for(var i=0;i<collection.length;i++){
    if(collection[i].hasOwnProperty(key)){
      if(collection[i][key] == value){
        arr.push(collection[i]);
      }
    }
  }

  // Only change code above this line
  return arr;
}
mcnalj
@mcnalj
Jul 15 2016 20:29
@cjrutherford IDK. Do you have to get the keys of the collection? What does looping through collection[i] do when it encounters ["a" : 1, "b" : 2]?
Chris Rutherford
@cjrutherford
Jul 15 2016 20:33
@mcnalj yeah, that's the stuff, but it looks like I can do it much simpler with Array.Filter()
mcnalj
@mcnalj
Jul 15 2016 21:03
@cjrutherford Yeah, I just cracked it with Array.filter() as well. The solution didn't have anything to do with my above suggestion.

I need some help. First off, in line1 and line 2 of my portfolio pics (I marked the spots in the html code with comments) my pictures, despite all being the same image, are showing up as different sizes in line 1 than they are in line 2. I haven't changed the size at all and they are all designated as col-xs-4 in different rows. Why aren't they lining up? Also, how do I keep my taskbar in front of everything else? Would appreciate any help. Thank you! http://codepen.io/Socrates714/pen/EybzRV
