@max77p does it matter if the channel is offline or not in order to get the logo? Shouldn't you get it regardless?
max77p
@max77p
Jul 20 2016 00:03 UTC
@coymeetsworld yes correct, but just playing with this right now to understand
so i am strictly trying to pull the logo for offline only
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jul 20 2016 00:04 UTC
yeah but not sure why, since you're going to rewrite it anyways
the code you have not guaranteed to work the way you want it to either @max77p, because of the nature of asynchronous calls

@max77p hey sup again
@max77p if you want to test just the logo, try this:
 $.getJSON('https://api.twitch.tv/kraken/channels/StrelokRage', function(data) {
   console.log(data.logo);
   });
(strelokrage is a friend of mine)
that's the output i got from the console

@Pitmation you are looking for fixed positioning
@Pitmation or if you are using bootstrap, read their docs, they have some classes for navbar

Hi! I have two questions about my pen: https://codepen.io/coder7215/pen/ezdoXr

My top two buttons aren't changing colors when I hover over them despite the code.
ALSO why isn't my footer all the way on the bottom?

Sonya Chan
@cysonya
Jul 20 2016 01:22 UTC
@coder7215 are you trying to change background color? or text color for the buttons?
@coder7215 the text color does change for me, but you didn't set it to change background color in your code if that's what you wanted to happen :P
Bailey
@coder7215
Jul 20 2016 01:26 UTC
@cysonya No I wanted text color to change! Weird that it isn't changing on my computer!
@cysonya What about the bottom border? :)

@coder7215 look at your .navbar =)
check the margin setting there
Bailey

Jul 20 2016 01:33 UTC
How did you get that? :) @iserbit
Kevin K. Lee
@kevinkiklee
Jul 20 2016 01:33 UTC
aight press F12. you will see the devtools. on the top left of devtools, you will see a little square with an arrow
then your cursor will change. bring your cursor to the page, and it will let you select any element on the page.
it was a little tricky, but eventually you can select that element, and that's the css i got for that element

Yo guys, what obvious thing am I missing here? The getJSON doesn't seem to run, and dog isn't being logged to the console, so somehow the getJSON is stopping the entire function? Also the GEOCODING url works.

    function success(position){
    var lat = position.coords.latitude;
    var long = position.coords.longitude;
    var GEOCODING = 'https://crossorigin.me/http://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/geocode/json?latlng=' + lat + '%2C' + long + '&language=en' + "?callback=?" ;
    /*console.log(lat + " " + long); */
    console.log(GEOCODING);
    $.getJSON(GEOCODING, function(location) {
            console.log("cat");
            console.log(location);
            console.log(location.results[2].formatted_address);
          }
    ) /* End of GEOCODING JSON */

    console.log("dog");

    };

   function error(){
     console.log("error");

   }

  navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(success, error);

@coder7215 learn devtools. that thing is insanely powerful. you can live edit css in your browser. also, it has the console you need for javascript. whenever you use console.log, that's where it shows up.
@coder7215 alrighty, good luck
@CrumrineCoder hmm, this is the error i see in my console

Jul 20 2016 01:47 UTC
Just a design thing, but putting the Github and FreecodeCamp on the front will just pull people off of the site before they view your portfolio
Maybe in the nav bar so that people can click on your social media at anytime while viewing your portfolio
At least, that's what I did
Bailey
@coder7215
Jul 20 2016 01:48 UTC
Thanks so much to you both. I love 100vh too, but find it hard sometimes when viewers then shrink the page and things in that div disappear!
Kevin K. Lee
@kevinkiklee
Jul 20 2016 01:48 UTC
nah, i think that's fine. in your main header banner, you want to put your call-to-action. for this website, his main objective is leading them to his github/fcc.
hmm. did you every try to mess with min-width and max-width? play around with those.
btw, jebus, i didn't realize people take that one seriously. =D i totally bullshitted mine.
bc i'm actually building a real portfolio site at the moment.

my plan was to learn angular but everyone says it takes a lot longer to learn
so now I have kind of changed my plans to react
probably will still learn angular once I have made a few things in react though
I plan on learning everything a bit to see what I like
Kevin K. Lee
@kevinkiklee
Jul 20 2016 02:03 UTC
really? lol, that's odd. well, i have worked with shopify a lot which uses liquid. and liquid html syntax is very similar to angular, so i'm just really used to the concept.
yea that's pretty much what i'm doing right now too
DuskyPixel
@DuskyPixel
Jul 20 2016 02:03 UTC
react jsx pretty much mixes html and javascript
I have read that react is very similar to angular 2
well I think angular 2 is more component based
at least
than 1

so i have a problem i with my headers the first one was fine but the more headers i put the smaller they seem to get along with when i use <strong> to make it bold its only does it for the first 2 headers
DuskyPixel

@zaynsantiago are you talking about the size? you are using h1, h2, and h3
fernando

Jul 20 2016 02:18 UTC
yea @DuskyPixel
DuskyPixel
@DuskyPixel
Jul 20 2016 02:19 UTC
@zaynsantiago h1 = biggest, h2=smaller h3= even smaller thats why they are getting smaller
@zaynsantiago use h1 for all if you want them all big
fernando
@zaynsantiago
Jul 20 2016 02:20 UTC
how can i make it do my h2 and h3 are the same size as h1
DuskyPixel
@DuskyPixel
Jul 20 2016 02:20 UTC
change the 2 and 3 to 1
fernando
@zaynsantiago
Jul 20 2016 02:20 UTC
okay and what about the <strong> to make them bold because it only works on h1 and h2
DuskyPixel
@DuskyPixel
Jul 20 2016 02:20 UTC
honestly it should probably be more like this <div class="text-center"><h1><Strong>ABOUT</Strong></h1></div>
fernando
@zaynsantiago
Jul 20 2016 02:21 UTC
okay thanks but can you explain <div> to me i never really understood what <div> did
DuskyPixel
@DuskyPixel
Jul 20 2016 02:22 UTC
div = just a container for things to put in pretty much and they will all be on different lines (unless you use float)
h1 = a size for the text
I have never used strong honestly but maybe it should be <strong> instead of Strong I am not sure though
I usually use CSS to bold
Greg Duncan
@GregatGit

@dharrison2010 instead of geolocation you can use ip location (not so accurate), or some other weather api like wunderground, which will give you coordinates of the user

@dharrison2010 don't imagine i am a expert. i'm still long way to achieve that. it takes patience, a lot of reading and exercise. I would say that the first step for the front end is to have a good knowledge on how to structure your page/pages in HTML, then to learn how you can change the appearance of that html elements on your page using CSS/or a css framework, and afterwards to learn how you can add interactivity to your html elements using js/jquery

@sorinr I noticed your weather api reads only the country for me
with geolocation
also you are using crossorigin.me
Sorin Ruse
@sorinr
Jul 20 2016 06:48 UTC
@kirbyedy its possible because of the this location.results[2].formatted_address. if you change 2 to 1 or 3 or whatever you will probably get what you want. depending on the country google modify the structure of the response :)
kirbyedy
@kirbyedy
Jul 20 2016 06:49 UTC
yea, I am playing with it now
basically I see that I can pull the lat/lon from it, so I can just stick it to weather api and done

I guess they fixed that

@ajesamson in your case you should add to the .blog-title a{ text-decoration: none;} if you make only a{text-decoration: none} all the a tags on page will get same style not only the one you want
Jan
@F3neden
Jul 20 2016 10:33 UTC
yeah that makes sense
@sorinr do you have a soulution for the other problem?
Samson Alajede
@ajesamson

@sorinr you are right
but i expect @F3neden to apply as required
@F3neden you need to edit

Jan

@sorinr the gray box on my page should fade out when you scroll down
Samson Alajede
@ajesamson
Jul 20 2016 10:36 UTC
@F3neden if the quote around blog-info is properly typed
the error goes off
but then you need to add content
enough to cause a page scroll
Jan
@F3neden
Jul 20 2016 10:37 UTC
content below the pic?
Samson Alajede

this are the erros in the js:
Expected ')' and instead saw ';'. (Google it)
Missing semicolon. (Google it)
those are at the end

@F3neden Here is some personal recommendations already made earlier today: " I would say that the first step for the front end is to have a good knowledge on how to structure your page/pages in HTML, then to learn how you can change the appearance of that html elements on your page using CSS/or a css framework, and afterwards to learn how you can add interactivity to your html elements using js/jquery " maybe it will help you on deciding how to approach a project
Jan
@F3neden
Jul 20 2016 10:46 UTC
that may be helpful but i had a specific idea i wanted to perform in code
still no fading
but anyways thanks @sorinr

@MohammadHasham From the browser you can get lat long, then you would have to use some remote API to get the city if you are using some kind of remote API (ip-api.com) then the city might be in the JSON.

@camilaavilarinho According to the network tab, the response comes back in 250 msec, so it is something else. Are does setting the $scope value in the json callback trigger a re-render? Maybe use the angular $http service?

@sjames1958gm @camilaavilarinho i think its about the reactivity of data in angular that it should been controlled. the time between $scope.data is updated and the function calling the api happens
Stephen James
@sjames1958gm
Jul 20 2016 11:15 UTC
@sorinr Yes, I think just updating $scope in the getJSON callback is not triggering angular to do anything. That SO link says the same.

if you registered on openweather, simply go to your profile, and create a new api key, do not request for data from the api repeatedly, they recommend once in 10minutes for one ip adrress, the api key you are using is probably blocked or mis-spelled @MohammadHasham

Hey Guys, I'm working on project 2 (portfolio page) and am running into a couple issues. 1) I fixed my nav bar to the top of the page, but it's cutting off the very top, and I'm not sure how to correct that issue. 2) How exactly do you build a scrollspy? Is there a resource out there that can explain whats happening with the code? I want to understand what I'm doing when building it, not just copy and paste. 3) I'm trying to line up my buttons at the bottom of the page with my copyright statement, but keep running into alignment issues. I think it's because my div elements aren't written in correctly, but again, haven't really figured out yet where I went wrong. I appreciate any help I can get! thank you! http://codepen.io/cyas87/pen/YWEKoa

1, @cyas87 when using a fixed top navbar, you have to use margins
it effectively puts it on top the of the page

Need help with simone game, i have just added the basic functionality. A random color is selected and added to array, this array is iterated and every color is highlighted. Then when a user clicks a color, it is added to array as well. When both the arrays are identical, a new color is added to the array. All this seems to work fine except that the color does not revert back to original state after highlighting. Please help with this http://codepen.io/drsherlock/pen/JKpwyv?editors=1010

Hello everyone! I have problem with "HTML Geolocation". When i tried to get current position longitude, i got an error message: "User denied the request for Geolocation". I figured out that there are problem in Chrome privacy settings for allowing to use current position - http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13370203/allow-to-use-geolocation-for-a-website-for-which-i-previously-refused-it , i make required changes but without success.   var lat;
  var lon;
  if (navigator.geolocation) {
  navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(function(position) {
    lat= position.coords.latitude;
    lon= position.coords.longitude;
    $("#data").html("latitude: " + position.coords.latitude + "<br>longitude: " + position.coords.longitude);
  });
  }
$.getJSON("https://api.wunderground.com/api/f4ea857aa2315c6b/geolookup/q/"+lat+","+lon+".json", function(json) {
        var city = json.location.city;
        console.log(lat);

        $("#ciudad").html(city);

  $.getJSON(html,function(be){ //<< but probably instead of "be" .... i would name it "data" or "weatherData"
           console.log(be ); //<< then open devtools --> console and check HOW the json data is returned..
}

then.. u can use ur access object notation (dot/bracket) and array knowledge (if data have any) to get whatever part u needs

@MohammadHasham after u execute ur getJSON.. it return data on ur function argument "be" variable on ur code above...
something like this

{
     "coord":  {"lon":145.77,"lat":-16.92},
    "weather":[{"id":803,"main":"Clouds","description":"broken clouds","icon":"04n"}],
    "base":"cmc stations",
    "main":{"temp":293.25,"pressure":1019,"humidity":83,"temp_min":289.82,"temp_max":295.37}
}

soo question is HOW U access to icon property on second line

 $.getJSON(html,function( data ){
          var iconData = data.weather[0].icon;
           if (iconData == "04n")  {
                   // $("#myWeatherImage"). // change the background image for example
         }
}

but u cant just drop some random names followed by dots or brackets and expect it return some data..
u need to CHECK how ur JSON DATA is returned and work with that (check the documentation or using console.log )

@shenoyabhijith i feel you. an easier way to achieve the same effect is to make the position of your nav contents "fixed" instead of "relative"
this will make the nav stay fixed in the top corner (or wherever you choose) on your screen, even as the user scrolls down the page

@Jordanmeyer89 - okay, I found it, but my solution is not there because of the name change... I'll have to work it out again.

Basically, you need two loops, and the outer one should be walking you through the "collection", which is the array of objects. The inner one should be checking whether or not the current object (the outer loop) (a) has the property for the "source" object, and it could be more than one property and (b) if the property exists, does the value match? You don't care if the object from "collection" has properties that do not exist. You only have to know if every property in "source" exists and the value matches.

@Jordanmeyer89 - okay, I got my solution running again. Going back to look at your code (if you haven't changed it) you have some things going on there that are not helpful. You can get rid of your first three lines after the "// only change code below this line" They mention Object.keys() - that is useful. Also the .hasOwnProperty() method.

trying to add a div that will have a similar function
to a bootstrap modal.

The problem I'm having is that the div does not
render properly and I have no idea why. I have
put a red border around it to make the issue easy

The css begins on line 616.

@davisec52 - I changed the CSS for your modal to look like this - and the image fills the modal. Not sure if that is what you are after?

.info-box {
    background: url('http://xylomance.com/fcc/skyscape5.jpg') no-repeat;
    position: fixed;
    top: 90px;
    width: 900px;
    height: 250px;
    margin: 0 auto;
    border: 2px solid red;
    z-index: 2;
    background-size: cover;
}

I was just tinkering with it in the browser tools, I killed the "center center" and whatever part of the background setting, and added the background-size: cover;
