can someone help me with the following, my array of twitch streams is not showing in order of online to offline. Sometimes it does, sometimes its random order
is it the way my if statement is structured?
Stephen James
@sjames1958gm
Jul 26 2016 00:22
@max77p It will depend on how long each query takes to return.

@sjames1958gm how can i fix this?
Stephen James
@sjames1958gm

@max77p You can store the responses, and when all of the queries have been answered, process them in the order you want.

http://codepen.io/GMATom/pen/EyLxmY any idea why I can'tget the code to alert me with the content of the query's result? trying to make sure I'm pulling the correct data before I work on the search box and all
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Jul 26 2016 00:24
@max77p - you can enforce sorting after the data is returned - I haven't looked at your code, but you can certainly change the ordering of how they are presented. As @sjames1958gm noted - the responses come back asynchronously, so you really cannot count on any particular ordering if you just blast a bunch of requests out there.

@sjames1958gm @khaduch this is what i have right now
twitchArr.forEach(function(twitch) {
  $.getJSON('https://api.twitch.tv/kraken/streams/' + twitch, function(data) {

    if (data.stream === null) {
       twitchLogo(twitch, function(imglogo) {
        console.log(imglogo);
        testing(imglogo, "offline");
     });
    } else {

      testing(data.stream.channel.logo, "online");
    }
  });
});
i have another function which gets the logo for offline ones
offline logos*
i get it comes back asynchoronously, but is there way i can implement it in my .foreach function?
or is the only way to do this is get everything first, store em then go through the array?
Stephen James

@max77p Not really.
max77p
@max77p
Jul 26 2016 00:27
@sjames1958gm so i should store this in array format first, the result correct?
Stephen James

@TomGM if your input is in a form, you can use an onsubmit event handler
Tomás G. Martínez
@TomGM
Jul 26 2016 01:57
@mingmingrr that's useful, I completely forgot about having the function run when people type and press enter, but I'll still have this issue where I don't know how to get the input text into the api query, could you look at my code and tell me why it isn't working now? if I make it work I can add that event handler and get the project done :D

@TomGM if you have jQuery you can use $(':input').val(), or with native JS it's domElement.value
Tomás G. Martínez
@TomGM

so if I wanted to use element ID (let's say I have multiple text boxes) it'd be $('#targetID:input').val()?

Hey everybody, new to posting. I was really frustrated with the Random Quote Generator project - now finished - and am wondering how other people went about it. I wanted to use an API but had no idea how to start. It was real challenge to find helpful resources.
@Sevohan Looks like you don't have a click event handler in your JavaScript.

@medicinemetasin I agree. It was really tough for me too. I had my brother in law walk me through it since he's a dev, but I probably would have been stuck for a lot longer without him. I think the trick is to learn how to google and find what you need... but I've still not figured out how to answer my own questions without outside help.

@khaduch Can you kindly show me an example?
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Jul 26 2016 02:35
@Sevohan - at this point, you have errors inside of your click handler function - pen.js:14 Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'length' of undefined - you are trying to use text.length when it is not defined.
@524119574 - I'll try to give you an idea without giving away the solution.
Jake Espinoza

Jul 26 2016 02:37
@mrdux84 Awesome that you can go to your brother in law for help! Yeah, that was really frustrating. I Googled the hell out of a bunch of things I thought would help lead me to a solution, even went through a short course on Codecademy about the SoundCloud API to see whether that'd help me understand. There were some helpful elements, but always a few steps too many from being what I needed to proceed. I ended up examining several other people's finished projects and picking them apart until it made more sense, Googling all along the way. Here's what I used as my primary guide: https://github.com/Rafase282/My-FreeCodeCamp-Code/wiki/Zipline-Build-a-Random-Quote-Machine
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Jul 26 2016 02:37
@524119574 - you can do anything inside of the filter function as long as it returns a true or false. So you could check an array of values, for example, with the .indexOf function, and return the appropriate true or false response, as your problem solution requires.

Jul 26 2016 02:45
@labanch when you don't specify the units in your URL, you get the temperature in Kelvin. You can convert that temp to F or C or just make the API call with units=metric to get C and convert that to F. More details: http://openweathermap.org/current#data

Tyler Moeller
@TylerMoeller
Jul 26 2016 02:49

@TomGM You can use .keyup() and listen for key code 13 (the enter/return key). Like:

$('#search-field').keyup(function (e) {
  var key = e.keyCode || e.which;
  if (key === 13) search();
});

You could also fire on .keydown() as this article suggests: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/302122/jquery-event-keypress-which-key-was-pressed

Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Jul 26 2016 02:50
@524119574 - the filter function uses a true or false return to determine the action of the function. So if you want to filter out a list of numbers, for example, if you have all of those numbers in some type of stat structure, an ARRAY, for example, you can use the Array.indexOf() method to see if the value that you are currently examining in the array that you are filtering exists in the array of values to filter. The .indexOf() function returns -1 if it cannot find a value in the array (or you can use any other structure where you can test for values - an Object would be another) - if you cannot find a value in the array of items to filter out, then you know that you should return false, and the filter function will eliminate the current value from the result array...

For those who worked on Simon Game:
how did you solve timeout after each step? What do you do when a user does not click at all? How long do you wait and what happens after the timespan of waiting if a user does not do any move? Do you reset to zero and start a new turn as in the example from FCC?

 var arrayData = data.split(/([\+\-\*\/\(\)\^])/);

The problem is in the last empty array element. My regexp expression is not well done. so it returns my empty array elements.
Can anyone hel[ me to correct this regexp in split function?

Hey guys, I built the random quote machine. Just which API would have to use so that the user can tweet that quote? Twitter API?
spalqui

you can give the following href attribute to your <a>
then after the = add your quote
I am struggling to get the geolocation on chrome
hence not working

@spalqui hi, geolocation api only works with https in chrome(u can see that error in chrome console) load your pen over https like https://your-codepen-url
@spalqui and open weather API doesn't work with https so u have to use proxy server like https://crossorigin.me as https://crossorigin.me/http://api.openweathermap.org/data/2.5/weather?lat=... to access it over https

@spalqui your second ajax callIS working, but yeah your navigation.geolocation isn't firing
hm interesting, if I put a console.log debugger inside (if navigation.geolocation) it fires, so it registers if true

Jul 26 2016 16:11
how could i check that
I am using chrome
Sorin Ruse
@sorinr
Jul 26 2016 16:18
@spalqui first in order for geolocation to work you should run your pen by https not http. like https://codepen.io/Spalqui/pen/akKzmk
my updated version
but I don't believe the geo location is working
Sorin Ruse
@sorinr
Jul 26 2016 16:21
@spalqui then in your ajax call you should change yoyr url to: url: "https://crossorigin.me/" + api + 'lat='+lat+'&lon='+lon+ apiKey + units,
Rada
@Radascript
Jul 26 2016 16:22
@spalqui ok so I added an error function and you do get insecure location on chrome. I copy pasted this jsfiddle to your code and it fixed it more or less:

vínαч puppαl
@vinaypuppal
Jul 26 2016 17:37
@spalqui no because both ajax and getting lat,lon are asynchronous but u can use promises or await,async (these are ES6 topics) to do in synchronous way
Tyler Moeller
@TylerMoeller
Jul 26 2016 17:45
@mpettaw2 This is basically the pseudo-code I used in my Twitch project:
for each user call /kraken/streams
  process closed accounts
    write data to the page
  process offline accounts by calling /kraken/channels
    write data to the page
  process online accounts using data retrieved from /kraken/streams
    write data to the page
You are going a slightly different route with a comma-delimited list in your URL of all users rather than calling one at a time. That may be more efficient in the end once you get it working

On my navbar, when I click on a link the 'highlight' should change to the selected link (eg. if you click on portfolio, the dark grey highligh should move to portfolio). However... it never works on the first click you try, but it then works on every click after that. Anyone know why it doesnt work for the first click on the page? https://codepen.io/nirurin/pen/kXJzOg

@UsamaHameed You would need to code it like they did for the website. It's a table with some CSS effects to make it look like it's floating. Right-click the element in your browser and choose "inspect" to see more info about it.

@MohammadHasham because of the asynchronous nature you will need to save all the data and then build your html when all the responses have been return.
I would make an object and put the json data in and count the responses when all are back then process it.
Initialize:
var response[user] = {};
as you get your responses
response[user][streamjson] = streamjson;
var response[user][channeljson] = channeljson;

Oh... Well it seems that there's something in the navbar element that changes it's width from 910 to 690, as well as everything else on the page? Must be a bootstrap default for... container width maybe?

@Dman89 i honestly don't think it matters where it is on codepen since it seems to sort that stuff out itself.
@Dman89 I've removed the sources and all. I'm not by the computer, but I'd assume that if u would go on the pen again it would work, but still be displaced

hey guys--was wondering if anyone would be able to take a look at my code and/or had advice for why, when the navbar icon is pressed on small screens and the navbar comes up, the width around each element when you hover over it is a small fixed width rectangle (and doesn't span the entire width like i'd like it to)

Any css experts out there. I can't figure out how to center thumbnails within my row. https://codepen.io/okeydoke/pen/YWvXoz
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jul 26 2016 22:22
@bethqiang you want it so when you hover over it the entire row's background changes?
Beth Qiang
@bethqiang
Jul 26 2016 22:24
@coymeetsworld yep! i've tried a wide variety of things to make it happen and it hasn't happened... only when i set .nav li a:hover width=200px did i see something happen, but if i try to set it to 100%, then it goes back to its teeny little box
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jul 26 2016 22:25
just because this is fresh in my memory you may want to look into using media queries
Beth Qiang
@bethqiang
Jul 26 2016 22:25
@coymeetsworld to do what?
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jul 26 2016 22:26
css media queries, basically you give a criteria (like width of browser screen) and then when that condition is met the css changes
Beth Qiang
@bethqiang
Jul 26 2016 22:26
yeah, i've used them before--but i want (and have been able to get in the past, but not sure why i can't now) it to change dynamically with the screen
bootstrap enables you to do that instead of having to have breakpoints
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jul 26 2016 22:27
yeah the problem is the li element is not spanning the entire row
vínαч puppαl
@vinaypuppal
Jul 26 2016 22:28
@mkrump i would do this to center but it uses flexbox try this if u dont find any alternative
.row{
display: flex;
flex-wrap: wrap;
justify-content: center;
}
Beth Qiang
@bethqiang
Jul 26 2016 22:29
@coymeetsworld yeah, and i can't figure out how to make it fill the entire row. i can change it to a fixed width and it'll change accordingly, but like i said, once i try to make it 100%, it goes back to its tiny fixed box
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jul 26 2016 22:31
width 100% looks like its highlighting entire row when on smaller display
if you set it to .navbar .navbar-collapse
wasn't aware of that bootstrap class
think that's what you're looking for @bethqiang
Beth Qiang
@bethqiang
Jul 26 2016 22:34
@coymeetsworld i set it to .navbar .navbar-collapse and it's still the same tiny boxes for me :(
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jul 26 2016 22:34
are you hitting the run button afterwards?
you don't have autosave enabled it looks like
Beth Qiang
@bethqiang
Jul 26 2016 22:35
i am hitting the run button, and i just opened it up in internet explorer (was using chrome previously) and my phone and both are acting the same...
i forked your project and made that one change and it looks fine to me, using chrome
and resizing browser to get collapsed navbar
Beth Qiang
@bethqiang
Jul 26 2016 22:37
hmm yeah, i'd probably have to change container settings (looks like there's a bit at the end chopped off) but it's much closer to what i wanted
weird
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jul 26 2016 22:37
yeah I see that too
its the padding from the container
Beth Qiang
@bethqiang
Jul 26 2016 22:42
i just tried copying and pasting everything (with the width:100% setting) into a completely new pen and it's still the little box, what the heck

@bethqiang
#main-navigation .container{
  padding: 0;
  margin: 0;
}

#main-navigation #myNavbar{
  padding: 0;
  margin: 0;
}

#myNavbar ul{
  padding: 0;
  margin: 0;
}
@bethqiang try these to see effect u wanted
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jul 26 2016 22:43
oh thats another thing @vinaypuppal @bethqiang you only want one container
that should encompass everything, that might cause some problems too
Matt K
@mkrump
Jul 26 2016 22:43
@mpettaw2 you don't need this part
parseStream+=JSON.parse(stream)
it's already object, you should be able to access the various keys directly
e.g. ‌‌json.streams[0].channel.url
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jul 26 2016 22:44
also idk if you want to remove all padding and margins, looks like padding on the right is the one giving problems so you can just target that (i.e. padding-right: 0;)
Beth Qiang
@bethqiang
Jul 26 2016 22:44
@vinaypuppal - the only thing that changed was the three little lines moved closer to the right hand side of the browser :(
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jul 26 2016 22:44
try redesigning so that theres only one container @bethqiang, that could help
the container' css comes with some padding
Beth Qiang
@bethqiang
Jul 26 2016 22:46
there is only one container in the navbar portion... unless you mean in the entire thing, which in that case, how do i get boxes and stuff around things?

I think you would have to use rows and columns too
create a row, and a column with measurement < 12

``` $.getJSON(api, function(json){
console.log("!!!");//good api works
    /* streams is an array thats where the usernames info are stored. will iterate and then try to print each item*/
    var len=json.streams.length;
    var parseStream="";
    for(var j=0; j<len ; j++){
        stream = json.streams[j];
        $("#sec2").append("<a target='_blank' href='"+stream.channel.url+"'><img src='"+stream.channel.logo+"'></a>");
    }
}).fail(function(){
    alert("failed");
});
@vinaypuppal @coymeetsworld ok hold on so many suggestions, give me a sec haha
@vinaypuppal @coymeetsworld .nav width:100 still gave me a little bit of padding (again, container properties, i'm guessing) but changing inline-block to block gave me exactly what i wanted! y'all are the BEST--thank you so much for taking so much time to figure out what was going on!
http://codepen.io/karpimpski/pen/vKjrPV I think I'm done this for the most part. it would be great if anybody could give me some feedback! There are a few issues I'd like to fix, like the fact that when I fade letters in it gets rid of the borders (I know why, I just don't know how to make the fade without that happening). another one is issues with my computer's logic. I thought it was ok in my code, but sometimes the computer chooses a random space instead of stopping me from winning. please let me know if you see problems in my code's logic, thanks so much!
