@cityproject and i am noticing a correlation between margin-top and margin-bottom...if i increase the margin-top then i have to increase the margin-bottom by certain amount to get it to work
what is the calculation that is going on?

if you want it to work the way it's supposed to be,
you should rather consider giving negative margin to the bottom
using .container
not .all

@cityproject haha yea...this has been one of the issues ive been trying to fix with my learning...i have been working with margins and stuff almost by trial and error. I know how relative and absolute etc all work, but in terms of figuring out what amount to put in margin/padding to push something to correct position

@cityproject like i know if a container is 100%...and i have one element floating left at 30%..then i should put the 2nd element floating to right at 70%
but it gets complicated for me when i am working with em and % together
not sure how to tackle that stuff

i think somewhere in the book taught me how to deal with all those things.

haha, ok. I'm sure you'll recognise the game. Currently, when i turn on and press start, a random section of the game lights up using a function i have defined, a diff function is then used on a timeout to turn the light off. This is all working well... but... what i now need to do is make this random light up function happen repeatedly (as many times as the count is). Problem is, I tried a while loop but i think the asynchronous nature of using timeout basically means everything doesn't happen neatly in order as i want

@petegarvin1 what about adding to the length of the timer in your loop each time it loops?
e.g. the first time it runs timeout is 1000, second time it is 2000, etc
If I was to do this again I'd probably do it differently but here's how I did it:
    var timer = 0;
    var timer2 = 800;
    pattern.forEach(function(button) {

      setTimeout(function() {
        buttonClick(button);
        $('.counter').text(pattern.length.toString());
      }, timer += 1000);

      setTimeout(function() {
        buttonRelease(button);
      }, timer2 += 1000)

    })
@hobdydion Assuming you are using bootstrap I would suggest starting by creating the navbar and a heading. For images I enjoy using unsplash.com

when i click start now, the counter jumps straight to 5... should go up 1 by 1, as the function that turns the light on has gameCount++
but i think its still doing all calls at the same time

@petegarvin1 yeah most of it is all happening at once. You just need to put everything in the timer instead of just the stop() function.
Look at the js console on that and you'll get an idea of the timing of things

Maybe you can create a function that increments the gameCount and runs the rand() and stop() functions and call that function in your setTimeout

you'll likely need to offset the rand() and stop() functions somehow because otherwise the change will happen so fast you might not see it

it increments one at a time, i can see in the console, but in the pen, it jumps straight to 5
and none of the lights are coming on, i assume because everything is happening too fast

add a console.log in your rand and stop functions
and you'll see that they are firing in correct timing
but seems like the UI update isn't happening properly anymore
not sure why at the moment

@Pagise because I have like 10 .calc-btn divs. I could get each one by id, but then I would have to create 10 event handlers, a separate one for each one. I want to get it by class name, because then I can have one handler for all the .calc-btn elements, then use their id as a parameter.

Sry, meant to edit not delete my question. I am trying to use a class event handler to get the id of an element and use it as parameter:

the code is not firing at all.

but it doesn't work with IE
you need to add a polyfill you can find in MDN (mozilla developer network) at the end of the page

jQuery works out of the box because it has all those polyfills included in its codebase so you don't have to worry about cross-broswer compatibility
that's the only downside of vanilla js, having to add plyfills
Or you can use the also not supported by IE (how surprising) document.querySelectorAll, you can use unary css selectors here (for more complex ones, use the jquery's selector engine that I forgot its name) like ".myClass" or "#myId"

@pacificfrost No problem. I used OpenWeatherMap the first time, but I have been using Wunderground to redo the project as it has https support. I have not used forecast.io, but I know of people here who have and liked it.

Imho. Wunderground has the best features in its api and is the easiest to use. The only problem is you can only do 10 calls a minute or it is locked for the day, so make sure youu are not constantly refreshing your page.

@sjames1958gm Oh yeah…sorry that was a dumb mistake I knew that, don’t know why I forgot to include it in the call of the function. Also anyway you could help me out with a search section as well? I attempted a live search and was very confused. I am now just trying a simple search and when I submit the search it compares the value to one of the names and displays just that channel. I tried in my javascript append section to have each id equal the name of the channel and then try and hide the other elements but it wasn’t working. Any ideas?

@max77p In the video on FCC for this project, he has a search input and I was trying to implement that, but having trouble. If I were to do it that way I would have to have my entire function repeated and that seems like a lot of extra code. I’m trying to just hide the containers that match the search, but can’t seem to get it correctly.

@lukenetti3 i don't think you need entire function repeated. Just create a function that will look for whatever typed in and search it in array then calls your other function which deals with pushing the results to page

@fynte - Hello - it's hard to make any suggestions without seeing code, but in general, the Bootstrap pages show an example of a collapsible navbar, so that when your screen gets to a certain width, it will show the three-bar "hamburger" icon, which you can then click and it will vertically expand the bar. You can probably make your logo responsive, as well, but that might be another problem. Certainly the bootstrap navbar example shows a way to handle the collapsing for responsive behavior
@Monik1490 - are you including the font-awesome CSS library in your CSS external libraries? Assuming that you are using CodePen, you can just go to the CSS config tab, go to one of the external resource items, type "font-awesome", and it will pop up a link that you can click and add to your project's load libraries

@lukenetti3 It looks like you're trying to call the API again to get the search results. You can use jQuery .hide() and .show() to filter the existing list instead if you give the main div for each user result an id = to the user name. For example, this searches for IDs containing the text entered in a search field with searchTerm = $('#search').val();:

  $('.results [id*=' + searchTerm + ']').show();
@2cool4school You can build an array of your own quotes if you want, you can also use an API that serves random quotes. There are lots of APIs out there. One that seems popular is Forismatic: http://forismatic.com/en/api/
And, yes, if you build the array yourself, store it in the JS section of your codepen.

@TylerMoeller Thats what I was trying to do. Even by adding the code you suggested I am still having trouble. I think the problem is, when I click the submit button now it just hides the entire results section.

when testing bits of codes, I find the Snippet section very useful
@sjames1958gm I think if you request the location over a HTTPS connection, it should work
location access was blocked for sites served over HTTP
I faced similar problems
also all external api access is blocked unless they are https

^ this does all the hard lifting for you, you just supply it with geographical data like lat/lon
it'll do the api thingies on its own and give you the data you need
no need to dabble in apis

XMLHttpRequest cannot load http://quotes.stormconsultancy.co.uk/random.json. No 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header is present on the requested resource. Origin 'http://s.codepen.io' is therefore not allowed access.
To fix that error, add ?callback=? to the end of your URL.

Hey guys, could you tell me how can I align my elements in div class = "current-other" so they would look like this:

Basically, I want current-pressure to be on the left, current wind on the right and current-humidity should be in between and have same amount of space to each of them.

please, help me :( I wrapper this text into 3 divs and made width of 33%. I aligned pressure to left, humidity to center and wind to right, but it looks like this:

I just want this humidity to have same amount of space to the pressure and to the wind

@GordonBme Yeah, browser default is 16px (1em = 16px) which can be overridden by the user's browser settings. Bootstrap default is 14px (1em = 14px).
