Hey all! Is there any chance someone could glance at the tribute page I started today and help me figure out why my <hr> disappeared from the bottom of the page? I've googled to no avail. :(
HA! Okay, figured it out. The div it's inside of didn't have any margin on the top! So it was there, I just couldn't see it :D
I'm embarrassed to admit how long that took me to figure out. Hahaha

@sayrah901 - the image at the top did not load, it might be blocked by codepen, or perhaps a site that you need to be logged into to have it load?. Also, the black background and the purple font are difficult to read - not enough contrast.

Also it is recommended not to use style= attributes directly on HTML elements, but instead to define classes or use HTML directly on an element within the CSS code - that way modifications are easier, and you keep the styling more consistent. Looking good, though - just a few tweaks.

I was supposed to be copying @kwhms . And I have seen some people mention cloudinary - I haven't tried it. there is another one postimg.org. My only little nits are the part of the display that shows the count is not too easy to see the white digit at the small size against the blue background. And maybe after playing the re-play, clearing the alert would be good? I do like the little help message. OH, and I just noticed that there was an "X" to remove the alert. Looks nice

@johnwatsondev - looks pretty straightforward and clean. One thing, the portfolio section doesn't have a very good responsive behavior - the plecholder icons just get smaller and smaller. I missed that there was a jump down from three across to two across, but it still gets very small. I am, however, just looking on the desktop screen and narrowing it, so it might look different on a true mobile device.

@simmosim remove the <style></style> tags from your CSS
you dont need them. those are HTML tags telling the DOM that you are about to write some style rules. CSS already is inherently style content
then make sure to put your font names in quotes like this font-family: "Great Vibes";
And you should be good
DJ

Hi guys, I'm starting my tribute page and am already stuck on the first line. How do I change the background colour. I thought it would be like this <body background-color="#FF0000"> <h1 class="text-primary"> <center> Eric Cantona </center> </h1> </body>
But that is not working. I have a long way to go...
DJ
@qualitymanifest
Aug 12 2016 04:57
@tyl-er okay i was perusing https://www.w3.org/2010/05/video/mediaevents.html and threw together something that works but there's probably a better way of doing it. basically i give the video an ID, targeted that ID in JS, gave it an event listener for timeupdate and if it's currentTime was greater than however many seconds you wanted the video to play, reset the currentTime to zero and play the video again
  var video = document.getElementById("sunriseVideo");
  video.addEventListener( "timeupdate", function() {
    if (video.currentTime > 2) {
      video.currentTime = 0;
      video.play();
    }
  });
i really do feel like there's got to be a better way, but... that works
@Mushypeas90 background-color and other styles should go in the CSS tab, keep it out of the HTML tab
@Mushypeas90 <center> is deprecated, CSS should be used to center elements
also on codepen you don't need to include <body></body>, they do that for you behind the scenes
gotta go, might be back a little later

so when you arrive on the site, you see the cursor blinking at the end of the title, right?
but as soon as you hover over the text, and it starts typing, and after that, scroll further down, the cursor dissapears at the end of the text at the title of the next section (for example "booking.com")
And this piece of code has something to do with it: $('span.typed-cursor').hide();
@qualitymanifest :)
DJ
@qualitymanifest
Aug 12 2016 08:15
@chrisamsterdam1986 you're sure it's that piece of code? i've noticed that all of the sections do that, if your cursor doesn't spend enough time hovering over the '.home-project-detail' area

good point
however, as you can see in the HTML code, the cursor is placed there every time :)
DJ

Aug 12 2016 08:19
@chrisamsterdam1986 i guess what i mean is that, if i leave my cursor in the middle, where it will be on top of '.home-project-detail', and scroll back and forth, they all fire, even if it takes a few seconds. but if i leave my cursor above '.home-project-detail' and scroll back and forth, they work very inconsistently
Chris C.
@chrisamsterdam1986
Aug 12 2016 08:20
Yes, that is another problem that I came across as well ...
That it sometimes types the wrong word, you mean, right?
It should actually reset the whole plugin as soon as you switch 'section'
Do you think that would be possible, @qualitymanifest ? because then we would fix both problems in one :)

but upward scrolling is smooth

@chrisamsterdam1986
Aug 12 2016 08:36
yeah
good point
however, the bigger issue is with the jquery shizzle
so, if you land on the website
and you scroll once, you see the title "100 day challenge"
and a cursor at the end of that line, blinking
if you scroll further, and you don't do any hovering, you will see that the cursor is blinking at the end of every title (booking.com / yanmar europe / etc.)
however, if you decide to hover over the title "100 day challenge"
and you scroll down afterwards
you will see that the blinking cursor has dissapeared at the end of the other titles (booking.com / yanmar europe / etc.)

Also, if you hover over the text "100 day challenge" and after that quickly scroll down to "booking.com" and hover over that title again, you will see that it writes the wrong line. Instead of writing: "view project" it first writes "100 day challenge" and after that "view project"

@JackEdwardLyons You might do better with that question in the HelpJavaScript as it seems like most of your buttons are set up in JS / jQuery.
I'm not super-strong at either of them but it if what you mean with 'evaluating' is for the button's click-event to be captured, then I'd suggest looking at your scripts because it seems like you aren't even attempting to capture them.
As mentioned, I'm not very strong in either scripting-language yet, but that's what I could see from browsing through the code. :)

@raveed - you have to save it to a website that is accessible from your CodePen project. There are some sites like http://postimg.org that are free and allow you to upload your images and link to them. You would have to look at their terms and conditions to see if there are any requirements or conditions that you might not agree with, but that is one option.

So I have this code here for the page header. And I want it to occupy the whole page. The container-fluid has 15px padding by default and row has -15px by default. Now if I remove the container-fluid padding on both sides then row having -15px padding will cause the horizontal scroll bar to come. Now how can I avoid this. I just want the about me to cover the full width.

Sabrina Ferguson

@TritoneJapan you could try % and see how that turns out. That if done right can be a good way to handle any sizing. Grids are more strict and ensure that your layout should be laid out the way you did it. Though font sizing from the zoom may still make things look "funny"

Wait let me put this in codepen.
What should this do?
I understand the offset part. As well as the 2 col part.
<div class="row">
    <div class="col-lg-2 col-lg-offset-1" style="background: pink; border: 1px solid black;">
    col-lg-2
    </div>
    <div class="col-lg-2" style="background: pink; border: 1px solid black;">
    col-lg-2
    </div>
    <div class="col-lg-2" style="background: pink; border: 1px solid black;">
    col-lg-2
    </div>
    <div class="col-lg-2" style="background: pink; border: 1px solid black;">
    col-lg-2
    </div>
    <div class="col-lg-2" style="background: pink; border: 1px solid black;">
    col-lg-2
    </div>
  </div>
I have this. But when my screen size changes to 'md' divs stack up on each other.
Trying to fix that so that it stays the same for md & sm size. And changes for xs
Btw do I need to mention col-md-2 and col-sm-2 so that things don't get stacked up :/ ?

@faisal1337 It's hard to tell without seeing the rest of your HTML. In a new pen with bootstrap added, try this to see the difference:

<div class="container">
  <div class="row">
    <div class="col-xs-2 col-xs-offset-1">test</div>
    <div class="col-xs-2">test</div>
    <div class="col-xs-2">test</div>
    <div class="col-xs-2">test</div>
    <div class="col-xs-2">test</div>
  </div>
</div>
<div class="container">
  <div class="row">
    <div class="col-lg-2 col-lg-offset-1">test</div>
    <div class="col-lg-2">test</div>
    <div class="col-lg-2">test</div>
    <div class="col-lg-2">test</div>
    <div class="col-lg-2">test</div>
  </div>
</div>

This bootstrap grid example pen may also help give an idea.

@faisal1337 you will have to add the other cols to control the stack the way you want it. bootstrap is a css so you have to call out classes and be specific or else it will decide what to do on it’s own.

@Sohan2infoSec Now that you've learned some basics from the HTML challenges, you can start learning HTML and CSS in more depth. https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTML/Reference
That should help you get started initially, then you can continue styling everything as you learn more until you get it the way you want.

@Sohan2infoSec There are lots of ways. If you read the documentation I sent you, they have a section about navbars: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTML/Element/nav
You can also use the navbar that bootstrap provides: https://getbootstrap.com/components/#navbar

http://codepen.io/faisal1337/pen/bZONag?editors=1100 Check this. I have made it easy to visualize the grid by using background color and borders on each div. The problem I'm facing is that the image div should take 12 cols when xs size is reached and rest divs should take 3 cols each. I seriously am unable to do it. Please help me out.
@TylerMoeller ?
it shuold work now
Tyler Moeller
@TylerMoeller
Aug 12 2016 16:58
@faisal1337 This is going to be a little tricky. The problem is that you can only have a maximum 12 columns inside a row. On xs, if you make the img 12 and all the other divs 3, that adds up to 24. It would "work" if the image was the first or last column, but not if it's in the middle.
@faisal1337 What you may want to do is use the helper classes, hidden-xs and visible-xs. You can define different html for different screen sizes: http://getbootstrap.com/css/#responsive-utilities

@Manoj-Fernando
Based on Jobs Tractor which analyzed more than 45,000 developer jobs advertised on Twitter during the past 12 months, the results are the following:

PHP – 8,238
Ruby – 2,937
Python – 1,587
Although PHP still has the higher statistics on this site, remember not to use statistics as the basis for learning or using a programming language.

Sabrina Ferguson
@itsacoyote
Aug 12 2016 21:58
@AzeddineDev not really, though understanding some math will help improve your code in certain things.
@AzeddineDev but for front-end development, barely. For software engineer, you should have a decent understanding. At least, you'll probably encounter math for interview questions for a software engineer role.

Sabrina Ferguson
@itsacoyote
Aug 12 2016 22:18
@jrandallhansen so you've got the basics of a simply div container and it has bootstrap container-fluid. That's only using half of what you can potentially use with the Bootstrap grid system. I recommend reading through that section to see about implementing columns to structure your code further.
jrandallhansen
@jrandallhansen

Hey all! I just did the tribute page project, and once I was finished I compared it against the code of the example project to see where there were differences. Obviously there are a lot, but one main thing I noticed was that I use id a LOT, probably more than I need to – but right now it seems like the easiest way to identify a specific HTML element that I want to add CSS to. Is there a better way to do this? Here's my project – any general feedback is also much appreciated! http://codepen.io/chiseld/pen/mEaLoV

@ChiselD you can use classes

Aug 12 2016 23:33
@hvuntokrul OK cool – is that generally a better idea than using id? To me right now they seem basically the same...

@ChiselD or if you know your layout you can target specific elements withing the DOM, i.e. target only the buttons inside a div, or a p or something else
@ChiselD the big difference is that you can only have 1 element with a certain id, but you can have multiple of the same class

@ChiselD if you create a class and add it to only one element it is basically that same thing

Aug 12 2016 23:40
@ChaosHacks if you loaded your pen via http and your image source is https, then it won't work
@ChaosHacks have you tried just the color, no image?
Parker Kemp
@ChaosHacks
Aug 12 2016 23:40
yes, the color doesnt work either

do you have a body tag in your html?
@ChaosHacks try adding it and see what happens
Parker Kemp
@ChaosHacks
Aug 12 2016 23:43
That didn't work either.
Let me ask a different question. How would you go about setting the color for the entire page?
Yuriy Medentsii
@hvuntokrul
Aug 12 2016 23:44
@ChaosHacks body {
background-color: #cccccc;
}
@ChaosHacks this is what I did in one of my pages on codepen and it works like a charm
Parker Kemp
@ChaosHacks
Aug 12 2016 23:44
so basically I'm on the right path, its just not working
do you have a link to that codepen so i can see how you fit the line of code in?
Yuriy Medentsii
@hvuntokrul
Aug 12 2016 23:45
@ChaosHacks where did you put your style tag?
@ChaosHacks 'cause it should work if it is in the css section
@ChaosHacks if you put it in the style tag within the body - that might not work
Parker Kemp
@ChaosHacks
Aug 12 2016 23:46
i noticed you don't even have a style tag in the css box

@ChaosHacks codepen hides <head>, if you want to add something to it you will have to go to settings
@ChaosHacks did it work?

@ChaosHacks because style tag is supposed to go to the <head> section as I mentioned earlier
@ChaosHacks you don't need it if you have a separate css file as is the case with codepen

@ChaosHacks you can copy all your css and put it in the style tag, makes no difference
