how do I change the Opacity of jumbotron?
greg
@wearenotgroot
Aug 18 2016 00:04
@Stormin-Norman override it, something like
.jumbotron {
   background: rgb(200, 54, 54); /* This is for ie8 and below */
   background: rgba(200, 54, 54, 0.5);
}

@Stormin-Norman The opacity property, suggested by @Harry97 is supported in all major browser versions and works with hex colors. http://caniuse.com/#search=opacity
.jumbotron {
  background-color: #222222;
  opacity: .5;
}

@TylerMoeller when I run the code like that the opacity effects everything in the jumbotron, not really the effect I want, but if i run rgba format the background opacity of the jumbotron is only effected

@iamDio - I think that the HTML Validation (that's where you're seeing this, right?) Doesn't know about all of the CSS classes, particularly the bootstrap classes. it might be a problem with the way CodePen separates the CSS out from the HTML. On a normal webpage, you would have all of the information for the validation.

alright, I think I have my rough draft for my Javascript calculator finished. I wouldn't mind some feedback. I'm curious: Could I just move on to the next project and turn the calculator at some other time(so I can fine tune it/build on it)?

@Stormin-Norman That's correct. I thought you wanted everything in your jumbotron to be semi-transparent. If you only want the background color to be semi-transparent, you need to use the rgba approach.
Here's a good site for converting from hex to RGB: http://www.rgbtohex.net/hextorgb/

@flindip You can surely move on. You've got a functioning product

@Steedler Hmmm.... strange, I spefically put the console.log in there to see if it could get the comp variable, but it never logs for me...

yep no console.log from the compMove() function.....
Kevin Norris

@calmcoolcollected - you just have to load your codepen page using http:// instead of https:// - at least that's the start. Otherwise you have a mix of transport types, and that causes errors. At least when I changed it to http:// it worked for me
Kevin Norris
@kevinnorris
Aug 18 2016 02:42
@Steedler right now you are logging the comp variable, which logs as undefined in compMove() for some reason

I'm really puzzled by this. I just uploaded my Random Quote Machine to Github Pages. When I test it in my browser locally, it works fine. But when I load it up in Github Pages ... the Twitter button is completely missing.
Does this have something to do with Github blocking that type of social media link? The code's fine in the inspector, I can 'see' the element - but it's invisible.

could it be an issue with closure? I'm thinking this comp is defined in the main part of the function, then the value is initialized later in the same function then called within a child function. could it be that since it wasn't initialized at inception that the child can't read it?

@cjrutherford your "if player = " code block starting on line 15 is never run. You need to put it in a function and then run that function in the $('#x').click(function(){ and $('#o').click(function(){after you set comp
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Aug 18 2016 02:48
@calmcoolcollected - you can load a page using either http:// or https:// (for secure transactions.) If you mix the two, for example you have to use http:// for the weather site, Chrome (and probably other browsers) will refuse to do the transaction, for security reasons. So you have to load the page with the same transport mechanism as you are using within the page. Maybe transport protocol is a better term to use...

Hi friends, I'm working on the wikipedia viewer and almost everything is working---except that if you hit "enter" in the search bar it refreshes the page instead of searching. If you type something into the field and click search, that works
also they remain blue on hover even though I tried to change that
any help would be appreciated
Harry Adel

@admiraltaylor Have you tried allowing the search to be initiated when the user hit enter?
I know that this is not a fix to the problem, but it's a nice cover up

Which piece of code solved the problem for you?
was it adding $(function() { $("form").submit(function() { return false; }); });?
Taylor
@admiraltaylor
Aug 18 2016 03:58
no actually
returning false made pushing enter not do anything
I used the following
  $(document).ready(function() {
  $(window).keydown(function(event){
    if(event.keyCode == 13) {
      event.preventDefault();
      return false;
    }
  });
}
but I replaced the return statement with all the code from my other function
which
is grose
gross*
actually I'm going to try and remove all that now and see if just calling the function works

Hi guys, need help with my tribute page: I'm trying to get my image to be approx. 80% page width and the bullet points underneath to be approx. 50% page width by by using 3 divs next to each other and keeping the outer ones empty. The image, however, always tages up the full width and the bullet points move to the left. Is it possible to use divs as spacers in that way? Code below:
<div class="row"> <div class="col-md-2"> </div> <div class="col-md-8"> <img src="..." alt="" class="thin-white-border text-center img-responsive" style="padding: 5%"> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> </div> </div>
Jason Luboff

Aug 18 2016 17:32
@jamesgollmart instead of having the left empty div, use <div class="col-md-8 col-md-offset-2">
This will offset the container by 2, have it be 8 wide, and then there is no need for the additional div on the right
That will by nature be empty with a width of 2

@erbombla : You'd have to apply width attribute to your .container not on the columns within.
.container{
  width:800px; /*or whatever you want */
}
Tyler Moeller
@TylerMoeller
Aug 18 2016 18:16
@erbombla Something like this should do the trick:
@media (min-width: 1200px) {

  }
}

@roastchicken if there is any space between elements using inline-block that space is rendered. A quick fix would be to remove the space between the nav and the div like this.

<div class="container elem elem-red">
  <nav class="elem elem-green">
    <ul>
      <li>List item</li>
      <li>List item</li>
      <li>List item</li>
      <li>List item</li>
      <li>List item</li>
    </ul>
  </nav><div class="column elem">
    <section>
      <p>hi</p>
    </section>
    <section>
      <p>hi</p>
    </section>
  </div>
</div>

This is kind of a hack though. Your best bet would be to use floats.

@elektra8875 put display: inline-block on the class of the divs you want to end up in a horizontal row.

You need to style the div
.mydivclass {
    display: inline-block;
}

@elektra8875 what @roastchicken is saying

<div>
<div class="inline"><img></div>
<div class="inline"><img></div>
<div class="inline"><img></div>
</div>

  .inline{
  display:inline-block;
  }

Where would I add the text
Timbowser
@Timbowser
Aug 18 2016 20:38
@elektra8875 after the img tag. You could put it in as an h2 but it should be contained between the div tags that I have wrapped around the image tag.
@elektra8875 you may have to give those divs a fixed width in the class and that should force the text below it.

@cannelflow If understand the question, they are setting the background color of the navbar to transparent so you can see the image behind the navbar.
.navbar-custom {
    background-color: transparent;
}

@TylerMoeller but they didn't set any background image to nav bar ?

@cannelflow no, they set a background image in the <header>
cannelflow
@cannelflow

structure is like
<nav></nav>
<header></header>
they had given background image to header only and it is appearing in navbar also

Background image in the header, transparent color in the navbar, so you can see through the navbar and see the header's background image.

Hi all. I'm a little stumped on the tic tac toe challenge. Does anyone have any ideas? The pen is here
http://codepen.io/timsig/pen/oLEGog?editors=0010
The part that's not working is the this.emptyCells function in my State contructor. It always returns an empty array, when at the beginning of the game it should return all spaces (an array with nine members). Thanks for any help

@Timsig Looking just at that function, I think you want empties.push[i]; to be: empties.push(i); (parentheses instead of a bracket).
Or empties.push(this.board[i])??

Aug 18 2016 22:09
Have you tried my code?
Julian Montague
@roastchicken
Aug 18 2016 22:11
Yes
for example, running this code alerts you that you won:
var counter = 0;
var winningCombos = [[1,2,3],[1,4,7],[1,5,9],[2,5,8],[3,5,7],[3,6,9],[4,5,6],[7,8,9]];
var userCheckedFieldsArr = [3,4,8,7];
function compHasWinCombo(){
    for(var i=0; i<winningCombos.length; i++){
        for(var j=0; j<winningCombos[i].length; j++){ //e.g. winningCombos[i] = [1,5,7];
            if(userCheckedFieldsArr.indexOf(winningCombos[i][j]) > -1 ){ // if userCheckedFieldsArr contains element from winning combo
                counter += 1;
                console.log( "counter incremented" )
            };
            if(counter >= 3){ // if loop finds three elements from winning combo.
                alert('we have a winner');
            }
        }
    }
}
compHasWinCombo()
Aleksa Rakic
@aleksarakic
Aug 18 2016 22:13
Yeah, but it shouldn't :) It alerts on every click, thats whole issue
I need to check if userCheckedFieldsArray has one of those winning combinations
Julian Montague
@roastchicken
Aug 18 2016 22:14
okay, I see
Aleksa Rakic
@aleksarakic
Aug 18 2016 22:16
increment counter every time indexOf(element) isn't -1. When it gets to 3(there is one winCombo), alert('we have a winner')
I am probably comparing incomparable things, but I am tired and cant think clearly
Julian Montague
@roastchicken
Aug 18 2016 22:31
ok so @aleksarakic , your code is just checking for three occurances of a number in winningcombos, not necesarily in one sub array
if you reset the counter each time you loop thru a subarray, it should work
```
function compHasWinCombo(){
    for(var i=0; i<winningCombos.length; i++){
                var counter = 0;
        for(var j=0; j<winningCombos[i].length; j++){ //e.g. winningCombos[i] = [1,5,7];
            if(userCheckedFieldsArr.indexOf(winningCombos[i][j]) > -1 ){ // if userCheckedFieldsArr contains element from winning combo
                counter += 1;
            };
            if(counter >= 3){ // if loop finds three elements from winning combo.
                alert('we have a winner');
            }
        }
    }
}
also make sure you break out of the loops if they win
