@davidwilson70 just a small thing - you repeat lines of code for the the background (starting on line 45) you only need to change the url then at the end in one line you can
$('body').css('background-image', 'url(myUrl)';

Hey, I'm trying to get a switch statement to regulate which picture is displayed in my weather app. It isn't working. I'm using an object to feed the correct case into the switch statement (as seen here: http://stackoverflow.com/a/30640575/5456075). Here is my code:

var backgroundImage = "url(http://i.imgur.com/DgdZaiD.jpg)";

      var weatherDescId = {
        thunderStorm: [200, 201, 202, 210, 211, 212, 221, 230, 231, 232, 960],
        rain: [300, 301, 302, 310, 311, 312, 313, 314, 321, 500, 501, 502, 503, 504, 520, 521, 522, 531],
        snow: [600, 601, 602, 615, 616, 620, 621, 622],
        freezingRain: [511, 611, 612],
        clearSky: [800],
        clouds: [801, 802, 803],
        cloudy: [804],
        tropicalStorm: [901],
        hurricane: [902, 962],
        windy: [905],
        fog: [701, 741]
      };

      function checkAnswer(id, weatherDescId) {
        for (var p in weatherDescCodes) {
          if (weatherDescCodes[p].indexOf(id) > -1) return p;
        }
        return false;
      };

      switch (weatherDescId) {
        case 'thunderStorm':

          break;

          case objectProperty:

          backgroundImage = "url(http://i.imgur.com/B232AR7.jpg)";

      $("body").css("background", backgroundImage);

@Redmega I like it. The little dialog box animation when loading a new quote is a nice touch. The only thing I could say is to make the 'Quote of the moment' title stand out a bit more since it blends with the quote text. But it's nice, minimalist and effective
Stephen

Sep 02 2016 03:39
I agree with @LPR-309 , @Redmega. Also, I think you should use the twitter logo instead of the button you're using right now. The graphic your using now suggests that you will let the user share on different platforms. If you are having trouble finding the twitter logo, use the Font Awesome font via it's CDN on codepen.

I am having a super hard time figuring out how to work with APIs. I've been stuck on the Quote project for roughly a month (partially due to limited time, partially to frustration). I have read everything I can find on APIs, I've watched youtube videos, I've taken other coding courses. But something just is not clicking with how to successfully consume the API and spit out a Quote. I briefly got it working in the beginning, but it would only pull a single quote. Since then, I have read so much that I have no idea what I tried back then and feel even more lost than before. I feel like it should be working but it's just not adding up and my code is a jumbled mess of me just throwing more things to try in.
Does anyone have any suggestions or go resources?

@stephepush man, jquery has been hard for me to wrap my head around

@camnicklaus, @AidenMead, have you guys tried codecademy's moduel on jquery? It helped me quite a bit

ooh thats a good idea

@camnicklaus , codecademy is a useful supplement to the FCC curriculum

the toughest thing for me so far is when I try to use jquery in the context of variables.
Aiden
@AidenMead
Sep 02 2016 04:12
@stephepush yeah, I gave it a go, just went through couple of Api specific courses there. it definitely helped some things click a bit, but I feel like now I might just be over complicating things
@stephepush I definitely agree that the two courses together do a lot of good in helping understand. FCC and codecademy have seemed to help each other click for me in most areas.
Stephen
@stephepush
Sep 02 2016 04:13
@AidenMead , I know when I did the quote generator project, the api stuff was really easy to grasp, but it was something else to learn the jquery "process"
@camnicklaus , what do you mean by the context of variables?
cameron nicklaus
@camnicklaus
Sep 02 2016 04:14
@stephepush I think, maybe sort of what you mean by "process"
Aiden
@AidenMead
Sep 02 2016 04:14
I feel like the hardest part is getting it to display my quote at this point. I don't know if it's something with the API i'm using (I turned to Mashape) or if the .append() just isn't the right thing to use.
cameron nicklaus
@camnicklaus
Sep 02 2016 04:14
as in...when I try to figure out how to use something like $(#id) as a variable to act on i can't get it to work
Stephen
@stephepush
Sep 02 2016 04:15
you mean like "var foo= $("id")..."?
cameron nicklaus
@camnicklaus
Sep 02 2016 04:15
@AidenMead right!? I found some script that uses append and I wanted to use it but figure it out so i could modify it to do exactly what i want but could figure it out
more like:
var destination = $('#currentQuote');
I think I understand that the jquery is more of an object but not completely
Stephen

sorry, it's late, i meant "var foo = $("#id")..."

Stephen
@stephepush
Sep 02 2016 04:18
yeah, jquery is a framework that sort of abstracts away all the object and method syntax
Aiden
@AidenMead
Sep 02 2016 04:18
you're trying to store where your quote is going to go, so that after you put in all of your .getJSON stuff, you can just go ....
cameron nicklaus
@camnicklaus
Sep 02 2016 04:18
basically I keep wanting to think of it as the pipe that i can send the results of my javascripting through...but it just doesn't work that way
@stephepush
@AidenMead yeah, pretty much
Aiden

@AmitP88 , you're farther along than I am, but I feel like if I focus on one thing (html/css/BS vs. jQuery/JS), the vs. the other, the skills I have for the other atrophies and it makes things harder. You have to kinda focus on all of them
Amit Patel
@AmitP88
Sep 02 2016 04:28
well the thing is, I previously applied for a position near me (I live in the central valley in CA), and the position required html/css to make webpages from mockups. I had a 4 hr test and wasn't able to get it done right because I was rusty at html/css (was doing more JS work at the time). This was back in april and the job is closed now, but when I look at areas like LA and other hot spots of growth, it seems like different things are being asked and I'm not sure where to put more focus on

anyone have a good site to learn API's on javascript. FCC doesnt really explain it enough to know how to create a project with it
Amit Patel
@AmitP88
Sep 02 2016 04:29
and now that for the past 2 months I've been focusing on html/css/Bootstrap by practicing on mockups, my JS is rusty now lol
I guess it's gonna take me longer to get an entry level job in this field
Stephen

@stephepush that's actually working code that simply fades text in one letter at a time. I'm trying to figure out how to replace each letter with a new letter on a click event

Sep 02 2016 04:31
do you have this in a codepen?

@stephepush sorry, no, I'm using sublime text
Amit Patel
@AmitP88
Sep 02 2016 04:31
@stephepush yeah, I was thinking that. I just don't want to be in a position like last time where someone gives me a mockup and I'm struggling to code it precisely due to being rusty
but I guess if I'm integrating everything that shouldn't happen again right?
Stephen
@stephepush
Sep 02 2016 04:32
well, I think it helps you keep everything fresh if you're integrating everything. I imagine a frontend position is going to want you to be proficient at everything, even if they test you with one thing or another
cameron nicklaus
@camnicklaus
Sep 02 2016 04:32
@stephepush here's the original version I found online:

i guess that's pretty open ended question
Amit Patel
@AmitP88
Sep 02 2016 04:34
@stephepush yeah, that makes sense. Ugh, it's SO tough breaking into this field without professional exp. And freelancing seems to be the same way =/
Stephen

@camnicklaus, what I'm getting at is that your question is a bit... loaded. Why would you learn just javascript for a frontend dev position? Frontend requires some knowledge of html, css and other frontend frameworks and libraries. You don't just code js in a vacuum. If you're learning js by itself, maybe you would be looking for a backend position. Get what I'm saying?

@lecluecg Codepen is convenient especially for the first projects, you can always save from there as a github gist and have a copy on github later. I mixed codepen and github repos. When you do it on github the most important is to provide a live preview link in read me file.

Hey there. Got a problem with building the twitch viewer. I have to pull the name of the user out of the array with all users. At my getJSON "user_list[i]" works fine, but in my following if-statement user_list[i] gives back nothing than "undefined". Anybody got an idea what´s the problem? Would be great.....

when you call your json function with old good var, i was already finished ++ ing, with let (new feature) your i stays inside for {}
i mean each time you pass in for loop
your i is "protected"
it's unchanged
inside your "call"
for exemple for second call i stays 1 inside all functions called inside {} until you change it

@ewathedoer
Sep 02 2016 11:38
@rajatag it just means that the page should have all of the user stories on one page, so no additional pages
have a look here http://theonewhodo.es/portfolio/ @rajatag
so a user does not have to go to another page to get the access to the info, everything is in one page
and no clicks are needed to reach all the required content, scrolling is enough
@rajatag hope it helps, good luck

@TristanC123 make it a row if you use Bootstrap, it’s full width; turn off all of your custom styles you have now, too see the difference
if sth is a row it’s 100% width and then by setting the columns you manipulate the vertical division, check this http://getbootstrap.com/css/#grid

@HosTilezZz it's because of transform translate on your center element
everything inside "transformed" content behaves like element has position relative and it's all the page (i mean if you try position fixed on a child top 0 of child gonna be 0 of parent top)

Hey guys, if I have a mobile menu (only show up below 760px media) with some icons elements, should I set the aria-hidden to true? Considering that I show it on mobile? :/
Can someone please help me?
I am supposedly supposed to "you forgot to put the whole first section in similar rows and columns as the next sections. In order to have a responsive layout in Bootstrap you need to have the hierarchy as:
container-fluid > row > col-xs-12
Your nav and first screen on mobile needs more attention with it now."
Can someone else help with this please?

@apalm1341 , the outermost div of your content is usually set as container-fluid. Inner components become col-xs-12 col-sx-6, etc. and the Inner sections that group these components become rows. Do let me know if that helps.

e.g. if you have a couple of images that should display on a single row each on mobile, add class="col-xs-12" to each of them and class="row" to their parent div. It depends on how your page is structured.

Am I thinking about this correctly.. say I want to use col-sm-* and I want 3 columns, the first column is a nav bar, and the last two are equal size with content. I would use col-sm-2 / col-sm-5 / col-sm-5
Am i thinking of the proportions correctly? That I just make them add up to 12, and can vary each to get the proportion I want?

@hacu9 At the stage you currently are, you only need to change the codepen URL like I did and work on it like that. Once you get to the API portion with openweather thats when you'll need to use the https://crossorigin.me/etc
@jgrantbrown You can just copy your codepen url into the chat

Lemme see
I'm reading the bootstrap docs atm
@Jihsaan21 why do you have a list within the navbar?
And why does that list have the nav class
That might be your issue

@Jihsaan21 To get scroll spy working, go to your codepen settings and make sure jQuery is listed before bootstrap.js. Also, change your navbar links to use href= instead of ref=

Hi there! I was just working on my Pomodoro timer project and it completely stopped working. I am working in CodePen. Any idea why the timer won't start on click or the buttons won't work? http://codepen.io/kevincauto/pen/xOodrz?editors=1100

@kevincauto On line 21 of your JS:

  alert("break time is "$(".break_time").text() " mins in length.");

should be:

  alert("break time is " + $('.break_time').text() + " mins in length.");

@Marjanus A lot of people are using that proxy and many APIs have a connection limit per minute. You may need to try again later, or ideally, write your app so it doesn't require a proxy to function.

@TylerMoeller could you elaborate on possible solutions with front-end technologies only? App was laggy with proxy(while working),so choosing new API provider with HTTPS requests possibility seams to be the easiest way.

Hi all! The units on my weather app are a bit jumbled and I don't know why. Is there something wrong here?
  $("button").click(function() {
        $("#tempCel, #tempFar, #textCel, #textFar, #windSpeedMph, #windSpeedKph").toggle();
      });
Here's a link to my codepen, too:

I am trying to work on my Quote Generator, and it isn't working. Right now it has an error related to an unexpected token. Can my quotes not have commas in them, or do they need a backslash? I tried to look it up but couldn't find anything regarding commas being problematic. Any ideas? I can link the codepen if it would be easier.
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Sep 02 2016 21:01

@stephepush - if it's just the display of the wind speed - change your CSS that hides the "other" set of units to this:

 .unit, #textCel, #windSpeedMph {
  display: none;
}

Hide the #windSpeedMph initially instead of the #windSpeedKph

For the random quote generator task, is it required that we link to an external API? I mean, would it be ok just create an array of quotes, and use that?
@sfmajors373 are you returning a JSON from a certain API?

No, just using an array.

I'll bet it's a missing escape char. I'm searching it right now.
Here's how I'm doing mine. It's still being tested, though. Not much to it.

@sfmajors373 Were you meaning to create an array of objects, or just an array? Because quoteArray is in curlies rather than square brackets:
and then, your get quote function at the bottom is missing a closing curly brace.
When I made quoteArray with [..] and fixed the function brace, it works fine.

Alright. Another problem: I want to get the cardinal direction from openweather maps to my weather app here's the code I'm trying to use. I am just trying to console log the results, but I'm not getting anything. What am I doing wrong? Code:

var deg = data.wind.deg;
      var degToCard = function(deg) {

        if (deg > 11.25 && deg < 33.75) {
          return "NNE";
        } else if (deg > 33.75 && deg < 56.25) {
          return "ENE";
        } else if (deg > 56.25 && deg < 78.75) {
          return "E";
        } else if (deg > 78.75 && deg < 101.25) {
          return "ESE";
        } else if (deg > 101.25 && deg < 123.75) {
          return "ESE";
        } else if (deg > 123.75 && deg < 146.25) {
          return "SE";
        } else if (deg > 146.25 && deg < 168.75) {
          return "SSE";
        } else if (deg > 168.75 && deg < 191.25) {
          return "S";
        } else if (deg > 191.25 && deg < 213.75) {
          return "SSW";
        } else if (deg > 213.75 && deg < 236.25) {
          return "SW";
        } else if (deg > 236.25 && deg < 258.75) {
          return "WSW";
        } else if (deg > 258.75 && deg < 281.25) {
          return "W";
        } else if (deg > 281.25 && deg < 303.75) {
          return "WNW";
        } else if (deg > 303.75 && deg < 326.25) {
