@U-ways yea fixed height is no option because the spans adjust to display size

@U-ways yeah i agree mastering bootstrap is good. As bs4 uses flexbox it will be more cool to work with it.

@bomholt to vertically align text
just use line-height property
@bomholt give span a line-height equal to height of span
@bomholt
.keys span{
line-height: 75px
}
@bomholt abv css would centre text vertically in spans as you want
Michael Bomholt
@bomholtm
Sep 14 2016 00:05
@vinaypuppal yea but the span height is 25% ^^
vínαч puppαl

@bomholt and whenever you have doubt wheather some property has wide browser support or not just check http://caniuse.com/ site
and for flexbox http://caniuse.com/#feat=flexbox

Can anyone find the "Unexpected Indentifier" in the JS?

Sep 14 2016 00:36
@flyyyperth so you want to add an extra <li>
Marc M
@Marc-Moeller
Sep 14 2016 00:37
@GregatGit , that's right. It's just that that part of the html is "auto generated" by the wordpress theme.
Greg Duncan
@GregatGit
Sep 14 2016 00:37
@flyyyperth are you using jQuery?
Marc M
@Marc-Moeller
Sep 14 2016 00:37
I'd need to find where it is generated in the functions php or otherwise manipulate the dom with javascript
not so far, nope
Greg Duncan
@GregatGit
Sep 14 2016 00:39
So you want to add it before its rendered , not after its rendered
Marc M
@Marc-Moeller
Sep 14 2016 00:40
I'd be happy either way
The difference would be before -> add it in the functions.php file ?
And after would be jQuery ?
Greg Duncan
@GregatGit
Sep 14 2016 00:41
If its generated in by PHP this will be a tough place to get a good solution - you might want to look in stack overflow. If its done in js tho - then here is good

@flyyyperth You just have to determin how the html is generated - if it's dynamically then you need find the js/php that is doing it

hey guys i have been having a lot of trouble making my pen.ios optimized for different browser sizes. I feel that when im trying to position attributes them im messing up on the classes. Should i just develop using a phone first then move to desktop or are there some class values which are bad for mobile.

ello, if anyone is familiar with the Wiki API, I'm at a loss here: http://codepen.io/Rinsho/pen/QKjOqz?editors=0010 . I tried a ton of stuff, even going so far as to copy-paste AJAX requests that were working on other pens, but to no avail. Every time I search it calls the error function :(

vínαч puppαl

@Rinsho You need to prevent default form submission like this

form.on('submit', function(e) {
        e.preventDefault();
        wikiAPI(input.val());
    });

And your API request seems okay to me and if u change code like above, you get response from API.

Jon
@Rinsho
Sep 14 2016 02:07
Awesome! That was it, I tried @storeybox 's suggestion and it still didn't work, thought I was going crazy, I needed the preventDefault() :)

Yes!
It's the message to be displayed when the AJAX call fails.
It doesn't show on Codepen, or my local machine.
But it shows on Github for some reason.

@bethqiang what goes wonky exactly? i don't see anything wrong.... or did you already fix it?
Beth Qiang
@bethqiang
Sep 14 2016 04:43
Capture.PNG
@qualitymanifest - that's what happens when you try to set margin-top of the "labels" row to anything more negative than -20 or margin-bottom of the "buttons" div to less
i'd ideally like the "start" and "strict" labels like, right under those buttons and not with the small space that exists if you set the margins to something it likes
does that make sense?
DJ
@qualitymanifest
Sep 14 2016 04:52
@bethqiang yeah, that makes sense. let me mess around with it
@bethqiang why are you using both materialize and bootstrap?
Beth Qiang
@bethqiang
Sep 14 2016 04:56
@qualitymanifest - the only thing i (will be) using bootstrap for is font awesome. i'm not actually using the bootstrap framework at all...
DJ
@qualitymanifest
Sep 14 2016 05:01
@bethqiang i forked yours and made a few changes:
i changed labels to a class and assigned it to both of the columns rather than the same container div that had row
i used col-xs-6 (but only because i am not familiar with materialize, and your materialize code did not seem to be working for this use)
i added bootstrap the way codepen wants you to (click the gear icon next to the CSS folder, add it in there)
and i reduced the negative margin-top you added to count
Beth Qiang
@bethqiang
Sep 14 2016 05:05
@qualitymanifest - i made this change: "i changed labels to a class and assigned it to both of the columns rather than the same container div that had row" with the existing materialize framework, and that seems to have resolved the "things going wonky when margins went past what it was comfortable with" issue! :) thanks!

Hello all, I have been working on my personal page but have run into a few issues. Firstly, any areas that have a black background-color don't cover the entire page horizontally. I have tried to rectify this by messing aroound with the margins, but it doesn't seem to go nicely with other screen sizes. Also, the navbar seems to like to disappear through buttons and thumbnails. Finally, the buttons don't keep their spacing at different screen sizes and and the underscores and dashes go into multiple lines instead of adjusting for screen size. Any help is greatly appreciated!

@MohammadHasham use https://www.npmjs.com/package/pushstate-server to run local server
  • you need to install NodeJs if you dont have already
  • and just install pushstate-server globally npm install -g pushstate-server
  • then inside project directory run pushstate-server .
  • it will start server at port 9000
  • and access your site at localhost:9000

a:hover{

a:visited

@ZZPot I think the issue comes from the easing:
transition: all 0.1s ease-in-out 0s;
it eases from a:visited to a, to a:hover
so you still see the a style in between the transition

@sorinr @gomesphoto thanks guys, i realized i had to set my parent div with a font size (like some value for a reference) and then all children would inherit the value in a 'scalable' way if i applied the em size unit. I've heard using rem is better, and i'll look into it, time constraints are forcing me to go with what i just did becaauuse well, i don't want to go about changing everything again, not just yet.

Could someone explain the weird behaviour with the title text when scrolling down my portfolio? I've got it set to shrink the title/nav bar but during the shrink (not during expand), the text goes wonky. http://codepen.io/monotone2k/pen/bwpZqo

@monotone2k Ok, I'm a bit of a newbie, but I'm willing to help
What type of behaviour are you trying to achieve here?
You want the whole navbar to shrink once the user scrolls down getting over it?
Jamie Weston
@monotone2k
Sep 14 2016 17:10
The problem I'm trying to fix is that when you scroll down and the header resizes, the title text is... broken?
No, the shrinking already works
Once they scroll more than 300px, the navbar shrinks... but the text (JLWeston) acts strangely.
While shrinking, it'll jerk into place. While expanding, it's a smooth transition.

Harry Adel
@harryadel

@monotone2k I guess it has to do with the height
If the API responds in a browser, your code is the problem.
Harry Adel
@harryadel
Sep 14 2016 17:16
when class .smaller is applied, it reduces the height significantly down to 75px
and you've your logo set to 120px normally
Jamie Weston
@monotone2k
Sep 14 2016 17:17
Yeah, but resizing isn't causing that jerkiness. I just removed a chunk of CSS (while still making it resize to 75px) and it works.

Jamie Weston

Sep 14 2016 17:47

Hi, I have a general question. Is using your own css (in addition to bootstrap) a bad practice in terms of responsiveness ? I mean having something like .btn-outline { color: white; font-size: 20px; border: solid 2px white; background: transparent; transition: all 0.3s ease-in-out; margin-top: 15px; } in your custom css file ?

@amillion3 Overall, it looks pretty good. There are a couple of things I'd suggest changing though with the layout.
First, when you scroll down, you lose access to the navbar. Have a look at making it fixed.
Second, your 'contact me' section is very vertical. Consider putting the your email beside the label instead of under. Same with phone number and social media.
Andy

And looking at your module class, it doesn't appear to do anything. If you remove that class from each of the divs, nothing changes.
It's your imgWrap and imgWrap:hover that do the work for making the description visible.
Andy
@amillion3
Sep 14 2016 19:03

And a general tip that you can use for every project... keep your CSS in the CSS section of your Pen. Makes it easier for other people to read. You have some in the HTML tab, which means scrolling back and forth to check things.

I'm far from an expert, but I can at least give my 2 cents. I like the navbar colors and style (how it shrinks away as you scroll). Can you have the menu shrink away when you click a button? That would put the focus on that specific section.
Jamie Weston
@monotone2k
Sep 14 2016 19:11
It won't shrink on clicking, purely because the javascript that checks for scrolling compared against a predefined distance.
If you click to something above that, it'll immediately revert.
Andy

It's worth getting in the habit. It's really useful, and it's the kind of tool you'll use when you get a job in this stuff.
Version control is important - especially so when you work in a group.
Even for basic stuff, I'll commit and push to Git, then if I screw up, I can revert easily.
Means you always have a 'most recent, working copy' saved somewhere other than your PC.

In the end, I just need to master the basics of HTML/CSS and focus on the javascript side of things after that!

I just completed a CS degree, and was hoping to get into software development. But web dev will be a welcome career too.
I've actually just interviewed for a position where I work. Should find out this week. And I'd like to learn anyway, so FCC helps there.
Even if I don't land this web dev position, I'll get my skills to the point where I might be able to freelance.

That's the ultimate goal for a lot of us, huh? I'd love to work from home - I'd just need to train myself to focus, too many other temptations at home.
And when do you switch off? Wouldn't want to get to the evening and think of that 'one more thing I can do quickly before I forget'.

@Harry97 Did you get anywhere with the binary numbers?
Harry Adel
@harryadel
Sep 14 2016 20:41
@monotone2k :D yeah about that
I'd say I'm getting somewhere but not where I want
I added certain classes to the HTML
and I want to loop through them displaying the internal text of each class in its own string or array
if I managed to do this, It'd be easy from there on
Jamie Weston
@monotone2k
Sep 14 2016 20:44
Taking your current approach of reading labels for row/column/diag, I'd say the next step is to track how many of each taken (by each player) until someone has a full 'set'.
Seems a little messy compared to your original idea.
Harry Adel
@harryadel
Sep 14 2016 20:46
yeah well the issue is -- I can't track each class individually
if I managed to do that, like I said, it'd be easy
because all I've to do afterwards, is to iterate those arrays or strings looking for a one containing the same letter three times
Jamie Weston
@monotone2k
Sep 14 2016 20:47
I'd stick with your original approach, just use different numbers.
Scale that down to 3x3.
You know that the sum of any 3 numbers is unique.
There's a limited number of 3 number combinations.
Stick them in an array, compared your 'score' against the array. If your score matches a value in the array, you win.
Harry Adel
@harryadel
Sep 14 2016 20:49
@monotone2k is it me or this is somewhat similar to magic squares approach?
lol no
Jamie Weston
@monotone2k
Sep 14 2016 20:49
Similar in the sense that it's a trick using numbers.
Harry Adel
@harryadel
Sep 14 2016 20:49
magic squares'd always get me 15 :D
sorry
Jamie Weston
@monotone2k
Sep 14 2016 20:49
But it's not the same, because it's not about a certain arrangement.
You could put your numbers in any order if you use binary numbers. It's the sum of the winning combinations that you care about. Gimme a minute and I'll mock something up.
Harry Adel
@harryadel

2016-09-14 21_52_57-Start.png
7, 73 and 273 would be winning numbers. I'll let you check the rest.
You just need a way of checking the boxes they hold against the winning numbers.
Harry Adel
@harryadel
Sep 14 2016 20:54
ok lets say the player fills 1 and 8
so his score now is 9
then the computer fills 64
so the player has now to shift to lets say 2
and then 4
now his score is 15
instead of 7
Jamie Weston
@monotone2k
Sep 14 2016 20:55
Yeah... so the trouble is coming up with numbers that can't be accidental. Maybe my choice of numbers wasn't the best :D
Harry Adel
@harryadel
Sep 14 2016 20:56
yeah :D It's more about figuring out how to decrement the score if the player changed his pattern
that's why I'm currently working on the classes approach
Jamie Weston
@monotone2k
Sep 14 2016 20:57
Hmm. Not sure that's gonna be an option. If you use the right strategy when playing TTT, you keep options open.

but it returns [1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3]

@haithem1717 I think you should use splice beforehand

Sep 14 2016 22:00
I don't understand can you explain more
greg
@wearenotgroot
Sep 14 2016 22:01
@haithem1717 you need to capture what your filter returns
Haithem Saoudi
@haithem1717
Sep 14 2016 22:01
function values(val){
  if(val != arguments[1] || val != arguments[2])
    return val;

@ereday Feedback would be make embed the jquery and script to make the scroll spy animated
greg
@wearenotgroot
Sep 14 2016 22:01
@haithem1717 another thing every function gets its own arguments object
Haithem Saoudi
@haithem1717
Sep 14 2016 22:01
@wearenotgroot so how should I use arguments object
greg
@wearenotgroot
Sep 14 2016 22:02
@haithem1717 so your filter callback will get 3 arguments pass on to it by the filter
those are
  • each element one by one each iteration
  • the index of said element
  • reference to the array the filter is working on
    so your callback function can be written as such
    function values(val, index, array){
    if(val != arguments[1] || val != arguments[2])
      return val;
    }
    so arguments[1] for your filter callback will be index
    and arguments[2] will be array
Haithem Saoudi

@gs-developer the most obvious way to do this is working with percentages

@gs-developer you can use a seperate div for the image and for the introduction paragraph. Yes, let me know
gs-developer
@gs-developer
Sep 14 2016 22:14
@MichielHuijse Yea. What I have done is right below the top PINK header, I put a div with a GREY background stretches across the rest of the page and made it absolute positioned. Then within the GREY div, I created a BROWN div, RELATIVEly positioned. Then within that Brown div, I created a para with the "the name is Justin..." and the image. My question is how could I set it so that If I put in further text after the "...and futuristic interfaces., the brown div must automatically increase in height and the image must adjust itself so that it does not OVERLAP with the text.

@gs-developer Your introduction class is set to 70%. Meaning that if you set the class of your image to 30% this would solve the issue
However I do not see the img-responsive class in your css
Oww sorry I see it is an id
gs-developer
@gs-developer
Sep 14 2016 22:20
@MichielHuijse isnt img-responsive a built-in bootstrap class.
Michiel
@MichielHuijse
Sep 14 2016 22:23
@gs-developer yes I think so, but easier would be to use columns
Also you are using bootstrap and foundation??
choose only bootstrap or only foundation I would say :)

@MichielHuijse K. I''ll work on that. I set the image width to 30%. no difference when I make the window smaller.

I am using bootstrap and am working with columns, it is more convenient than with percentages, although both is possible.
<div class="row"> <div class="col-md-6">

@gs-developer Start a new pen past this into html:

<div id="col1"> Hi </div>
<div id="col2"> Hi </div>

and this into css:

#col1{
  background-color: blue;
  float: left;
  width: 70%
}
#col2{
  background-color: yellow;
}

This same manner you can use inside the brown box on your page

The width of a mobile screen is 12 pixels.
@MichielHuijse Would it be wise to have class="col-md-6" when the screen will differ from device to device.
Michiel
@MichielHuijse
Sep 14 2016 22:40
I don't know exactly but the width of a modile screen is bigger than that, more like 500px
Yes that would be a wise decision, Bootstrap would automatically make a break up point for you, you can also see this when you change the size of your screen

@sf-jd The Bootstrap 3 grid system has four tiers of classes: xs (phones), sm (tablets), md (desktops), and lg (larger desktops).

@Gregb1609 Hello, yes! Remember to use the encodeURIComponent() method:

encodeURIComponent("\"" + currentQuote + "\" -" + currentAuthor));  //The encodeURIComponent() function encodes a URL text to be URL friendly.

When sharing your tweets!
