hi guys im having trouble with scoping and getting a buttons value
var opponent;

    // I could probably refactor both these code blocks
        opponent_buttons.forEach((btn) => {
          btn.addEventListener("click", function() {
          opponent = btn.value;
          console.log(opponent); // returns "HUMAN" || "COMPUTER"
          });
        });
    console.log(opponent); // returns undefined
can anyone help explain why this is happening?

@jrandallhansen
Sep 15 2016 00:31
@JackEdwardLyons aren't you only affecting the local variable when you adjust the value like that?
what would var opponent =btn.value; do? i think it sets the value globally
no im sorry i have it exactly backwards. this should be the way to do it. no var keyword
greg
@wearenotgroot
Sep 15 2016 00:38
@jrandallhansen first thing to correct ---->you need to loop jquery first before anything else. so add jquery first in your js settings
jrandallhansen
@jrandallhansen
Sep 15 2016 00:38
@wearenotgroot jquery is added in mine already
greg
@wearenotgroot
Sep 15 2016 00:39
@jrandallhansen yes but it should be added first then bootstrap second
jrandallhansen
@jrandallhansen
Sep 15 2016 00:40
@wearenotgroot it didnt change anything.

Sep 15 2016 00:42
@jrandallhansen always check the dev console for error it should point you to where the problem is approxiately
jrandallhansen
@jrandallhansen
Sep 15 2016 00:42
what the heck is the dev log??
greg
@wearenotgroot
Sep 15 2016 00:42
dev console :smile:
@jrandallhansen anyways you are getting undefined as the channels names
because you cant access users[i] inside the callback function for $.getJSON
Lauren
@LaurenDoughty
Sep 15 2016 00:43
the part where the colored words print out saying scary error messages. they're typically in red...yes? or am I confusing that with Atom?
greg
@wearenotgroot
Sep 15 2016 00:44
since the for loop goes way pass the $.getJSON before it get the response from the api @jrandallhansen

@jrandallhansen what you can do is get the displayname of the channel from the data if the data.stream is not null

data.stream.channel.display_name     //<-------will give you displayname

and the url can be access if the channel is stream via

data.stream.channel.url             //not data.stream.url
oh i was accessing the JSON wrong! @wearenotgroot thank you!

check this out now. the AJAX calls appear to be working but my fix for the usernames did not work
i need to just figure out a better fix for the name issue. i dont know why each name is coming up as the last name
greg
@wearenotgroot
Sep 15 2016 00:48
@jrandallhansen as mentioned the for loop move faster than the callback is being triggered
jrandallhansen
@jrandallhansen
Sep 15 2016 00:49
@wearenotgroot i dont understand what that means
greg
@wearenotgroot
Sep 15 2016 00:49
@jrandallhansen so replace it by using the data.stream.channel.display_name if the channel is streaming or data.stream !== null
Rodolfo

Hi guys, I just finished my Portfolio page.
http://codepen.io/cryptshell/pen/vKqPEw

Can any of you give me feedback on it? I have something that's bothering me: when you go the webpage through a small device the picture is too big@and I can't seem to fix it correctly. I'm trying to use two bootstrap columns so they align and resize perfectly when you use a small device but somehow the picture stays really big🙈. Any input is appreciated. :)

http://codepen.io/cryptshell/pen/vKqPEw

jrandallhansen
@jrandallhansen
Sep 15 2016 00:50
@wearenotgroot what about if data.stream == null ??
that's the issue i cant figure out lol
U-ways
@U-ways
Sep 15 2016 00:52
@jrandallhansen It will be ignored :D You're using if/else statements!
greg
@wearenotgroot
Sep 15 2016 00:52
@jrandallhansen then the channel is not streaming. but you'll still receive an object as a response. in that object there should be links you can use to make another $.getJSON call to get more info on the channel
jrandallhansen
@jrandallhansen
Sep 15 2016 00:53
@wearenotgroot hmmm. the object i get back has two links but neither give more info that includes a display_name or username
https://api.twitch.tv/kraken/streams/freecodecamp this is the data.stream == null object.
greg
@wearenotgroot
Sep 15 2016 00:54

@jrandallhansen if you console.log(data) outside the if statement
if the stream is null and you open the object and click on _links

channel:"https://api.twitch.tv/kraken/channels/RobotCaleb"
self:"https://api.twitch.tv/kraken/streams/RobotCaleb"

those links
you can use the first one to call the api once more

$.getJSON(data._links.channel, function(){ .....});
jrandallhansen
@jrandallhansen
Sep 15 2016 00:57
@wearenotgroot but the first one doesnt return an object that has any better info
and the self link is just the same call
U-ways
@U-ways
Sep 15 2016 00:58
@jrandallhansen Check out:
"https://api.twitch.tv/kraken/users/"
greg
@wearenotgroot
Sep 15 2016 00:58
@jrandallhansen if they are streaming it should give you enough info about that channel
jrandallhansen
@jrandallhansen
Sep 15 2016 00:58
and instead of a $.getJSON ive used AJAX call because they require JSONP format.
greg
@wearenotgroot
Sep 15 2016 00:59
@jrandallhansen you can do jsonp on both
jrandallhansen
@jrandallhansen
Sep 15 2016 00:59
@wearenotgroot you have already helped me solve the issue with ones who are streaming but i need a solution for those offline
@U-ways im not sure what that link is for. it returns the same object i saw from following channel link. only error, message and status. no username
U-ways
@U-ways
Sep 15 2016 01:00

@jrandallhansen If stream provided a null response the user should be offline.

"https://api.twitch.tv/kraken/streams/"

greg
@wearenotgroot
Sep 15 2016 01:01
@jrandallhansen you if structure can be
if (data.stream){
          //if Streamer is online append li with link to the stream
          $('#streamList').append("<li><p>" + data.stream.channel.display_name + " is currently " + "<a href= " + data.stream.channel.url + " target=\"_blank\" >online.</a></p><p>" + data.stream.game + "</p></li>");
          //console.log test to return stream object
        console.log(data.stream);
 } else if(data.stream ===  null){
            $.getJSON(data._links.channel, function(){ .....});      //<--------call the api once more on /channel additonal info
  }
  else
  {
              //other thing than error
  }
U-ways
@U-ways
Sep 15 2016 01:01
@wearenotgroot what about if data.stream == null ??
@jrandallhansen Btw at the moment there are some minor bugs with the TwitchTV API.
That's why the offical FCC example does not have the user description when they're online and missing their profile pictures.
jrandallhansen
@jrandallhansen
Sep 15 2016 01:05
@wearenotgroot have you followed the link to data._links.channel? this is all it returns "error": "Bad Request",
"status": 400,
"message": "No client id specified"
i dont know why making that second call will help me apply the username to those offline?
greg
@wearenotgroot
Sep 15 2016 01:06
@jrandallhansen well you can also just slice the name from the link
George Zaharia
@Franel13

@U-ways Do you know when React lessons will be available?
jrandallhansen
@jrandallhansen
Sep 15 2016 01:08
@wearenotgroot i was thinking maybe go that route but it dont know how many characters to slice.
maybe slice until you see a "/" character would work
but that may present that same issue with the for-loop being too fast
oh no it wouldnt. could grab the link using the returned JSON object

 $('#tweet-quote').attr('href', 'https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text='+content).attr('target', '_blank');

(obviously content is whatever your quote is)

my <a> tag connecting to twitter also has the id, 'tweet-quote'

@Jay-20 In general you will get a "list" of values from the API and you will want to place them into some container element,
This could be div or a ul or something else. You would create the HTML in js and append to the container div.
You can use jquery for the HTML operations, or use the HTML api of the browser.

@sjames1958gm do we need a client ID whenever we call the API in this project?
Stephen James
@sjames1958gm
Sep 15 2016 09:49
@Jay-20 No
https://api.twitch.tv/kraken/streams/freecodecamp?callback=? basically this is the URL for one of the APIs to twitch.
there are more than one streams, channels, users, etc
Jayesh Bhatia
@Jay-20

@sjames1958gm but with this api we will only get users which are streaming currently isn't it?
Stephen James

@Jay-20 With streams you get all users, but the object will have null for stream if offline
{
"stream": null,
"_links": {
"self": "https://api.twitch.tv/kraken/streams/freecodecamp",
"channel": "https://api.twitch.tv/kraken/channels/freecodecamp"

Hi everyone. This is my third day coding and I encountered my first problem that is kinda hard to solve on my own. I am trying to use Bootstrap ScrollSpy. For now it works partially. When I click on the menu buttons it jumps to the corresponding section. However if I scroll down the page, those menu buttons would not highlight. I did everything just like in the examples I found online.
Has anyone encountered this problem before?

@kirbyedy Thanks for notification, I wasn't aware that. Now I fix it here . To fix it I had to do two things.
1) add an id foo to div collapse navbar-collapse element and put same id foo to <button type="button" class="navbar-toggle" data-toggle="collapse" data-target="#foo"> in data-target
2) add<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.12.4/jquery.min.js"></script> .
I could not understand why I had to do second step. I mean adding ajax.jquery.min.js . Before adding that, I've already added https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/jquery/3.1.0/jquery.min.js but it wasn't enough alone. Could you explain me what is the difference between these two jquery?

@grantknaver :smile:

1) You have a style="width:800px" on your img. Get rid of that. For you already have img-responsive on your image

2) Use padding:30px 0 0 0 !important; in your .jumbotron

grantknaver

@grantknaver try using well instead of jumbotron(got rid of that in-line style on <img> as well)

<div class="well center-block">
    <img src="http://static1.comicvine.com/uploads/original/11/111746/5015138-29.11.11.jpg" class="img-responsive img-rounded">

      </p>
      <footer> H.P Lovecraft</footer>

Sep 15 2016 12:07
@vasokir first: do not mix inline css style with "external" style. just try to put everything in the css "external" part. take a look at: <p class="text-center text-colors Lob" style="font-size:200%"> in your html part and: .Lob{font-family: 'Lobster', cursive;} in the css part. second try to give your sections(about, portfolio, contact) a min-height: 600px lets say, to make the webpage feel more full of content :)

<div id="my-jumbo" class="jumbotron..."....

#my-jumbo {
  width: 80%;
  padding:30px 0 0 0;

@Harry97 Good work. Some feedback:
  • In your JS editor in codepen, click the down arrow in the top, right-hand corner and select "Analyze JS" - there are a few suggestions to consider.
  • You may want to remove your console.log() statements for the final project.
  • The modal asking me to be X or O is slightly off center to the right.
  • Missing viewport tag in <head> for better display on mobile
  • You could make it a little harder :) maybe have the computer check for a win first, then a block, then an empty corner tile, before choosing a random tile.

Hello everyone!

I've been having issues with my Local Weather app. First: I found out that none of my function declarations would work unless calling them without var, so all of my functions are declared that way. Second: None of my functions will run as the page loads. I'll get my console.log messages from both API calls (One saying success and the other saying error), but no changes to the html, like I put in my function. So to fix this, I put them into named functions and tried calling them at various places at the end of the code, and still no luck. Only way I've been able to get them to work is by calling the functions from the console. Any help would be much appreciated. It's more likely that I'm just missing something here, but I'm also afraid I could be working against a bug in CodePen.

from line 81-99
whats the difference between .eq() and :eq()

try "let" instead of "var" and see if you get the same thing. if that doesn't work try creating undefined variables with the same name like let getName;
let getName;

I'm checking in a clockwise manner i.e. top left, top mid, top right, etc. Obviously there will be times when checking the array properties will be undefined i.e. -1. @KoniKodes That column One is a class for div element. The text"column one" is a p element inside the div.

@KoniKodes I cannot seem to get my bottom two divs (the form and the social media icons) lined up centered next to eachother...
on a wide screen
while keeping them centered below eachother on a small screen
Toni Shortsleeve
@KoniKodes
Sep 15 2016 21:32
@LeCoquille I think you need a div class='row' above the first column, and then close the div after the last column.
@gs-developer Really? Let me look again.
gs-developer

Sep 15 2016 21:32
@KoniKodes Try setting margin:0px, you will know. The margin is the white space outside the column.
Toni Shortsleeve
@KoniKodes
Sep 15 2016 21:35
I'm confused now. What exactly do you want it to look like? You classes have a 10px margin, and you don't have a set for p
gs-developer
@gs-developer
Sep 15 2016 21:36
@KoniKodes I just want to know why is there a space above and below the text Column One. I didnt write this code. I am trying to understand it.
@KoniKodes The space is not because of the margin. I am talking about the space in the box above the text"column One".
@KoniKodes Spaces in the box are governed by padding , but there is no padding here.
Joran de Haan
@LeCoquille
Sep 15 2016 21:38
@KoniKodes hmmm.. doesn't seem to work
@KoniKodes I did it with float first, but then the content wouldn't center when the divs were below eachother in small screen
Toni Shortsleeve
@KoniKodes
Sep 15 2016 21:39
@gs-developer Oh, okay. I think this is it. Your paragraph has an automatic margin, and it causes the space between the lines. If you don't want that, try the words between the div with no p.
@LeCoquille Ouch. Let me look again.

@LeCoquille Making sure I understand, you want the form in one column(left side), with the two icons (right side) on the same row?
@gs-developer Great! What was I missing?
gs-developer
@gs-developer
Sep 15 2016 21:44
@KoniKodes It has nothing related to margin. Check this out. http://codepen.io/gs-developer/pen/jrqYEX
@KoniKodes That yellow space is the p element. The dark blue space is because the p element is inside a div element so the div element gives it a space by default. The cyan space is because of the div containing the div.

@KoniKodes what is overflow:auto and height:100% doing in #content.
Toni Shortsleeve
@KoniKodes
Sep 15 2016 21:50
@LeCoquille If that is what you are trying to do, then you may want to make your contact me container display:inline-block, and then one row, with contact at col 6 and each icon at col 3.
Joran de Haan
@LeCoquille
Sep 15 2016 21:52
@KoniKodes i need to get the form on the left (say half the page) and the linkedin widget and the fb and twitter icons below on the right
Toni Shortsleeve
@KoniKodes
Sep 15 2016 21:53
@gs-developer If I understand correctly, overflow:auto - If overflow is clipped, a scroll-bar should be added to see the rest of the content http://www.w3schools.com/cssref/pr_pos_overflow.asp checkout which overflow option may meet your needs the best.
@LeCoquille okay then, you will want an id wrapper that is set to display:inline-block. Otherwise it is automatically made a block and you can' t have a row. Then you want to set below that a class "row". It automatically goes to 12 col. Then make each section a col. Close out the row after the last column and then close out the id.

@GarySiu I am learning to understand it. But what about now:

function destroyer(arr) {
var a = [];
for (var i = 1; i < arguments.length; i++){
a.push(arguments[i]);
}
var b = arguments[0];
return b.filter(function(val){

}

destroyer([1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3], 2, 3);

@FireFalcon1155
guys i'm stuck on this challenge, i make a function that takes a array. all letters in array1 must be in array[0]. here's my code so far:
```
function mutation(arr) {
  var fir, sec;
  fir=arr[0];
  fir.toLowerCase();
  sec=arr[1];
  sec.toLowerCase();
  sec=sec.split("");
  var correct=0;
  for(i=0;i<sec.length;i++){
    if(sec[i].indexOf(fir)){
      correct++;
    }
    else{
      return false;
    }
  }
  return arr;
}
mutation(["hello", "hey"]);
Sep 15 2016 23:03
@GarySiu but when i make it return something it stops iterating so i dont know how to make it continue iterating in order to get a1
@vinaypuppal but i think i have to use a foor loop in case that the number of arguments was indefined, right?
@FireFalcon1155 also you dont really need to convert them into array. you can just use brackets or .charAt(..)
also the test can be if the indexOf returns a negative index you can return false; <----------immediately
Gary Siu
@GarySiu
Sep 15 2016 23:10
@zarruk return !(a[0] === val || a[1] === val);
vínαч puppαl
@vinaypuppal
  • as you pulled of rest of arguments in to a variable so inside filter use
    http://mdn.io/includes to test if that value exists or not
vínαч puppαl
@vinaypuppal
Sep 15 2016 23:11
@zarruk like a.includes(val) it will return true or false . so it will help filter to filter values
Salomon
@zarruk
Sep 15 2016 23:11
@GarySiu I know. The issue here is that I want to use I for loop, to filter all the extra arguments, in case the number of extra arguments is undefined. For example, if there were 4 extra arguments, the code you sent me wouldnt work. Am I right?
Gary Siu
@GarySiu
@zarruk the callback function for filter needs to return true or false. this will decide if the item currently being evaluated is to be kept or to be tossed
@vinaypuppal
@zarruk hey filter requires either true or false inorder to reject or store that value. If callback returns false it will reject that value.
