hey guys, I really need your help. I'm working on my media queries for my site but dev tools is driving me nuts because I got the mobile views to how I wanted them, but then when I revisited my site in mobile view it's messed up, so I dunno if it's right or not: https://amitp88.github.io/New-Portfolio/
I also had everything positioned right for mobile but when I visited my site everything was messed up in tablet view, so ugh, this is so frustrating >.<

@NanciCarmona You're going to want to use the bootstrap grid system
@NanciCarmona Put them into a row and then you can add columns if you want to space them out
Greg Duncan
@GregatGit
Sep 25 2016 01:21
@NanciCarmona when you're using codepen should take full advantage of its layout - put all the the css in the css tab - and if you want to add fonts and style sheets and libraries - that can be done in the settings. But to get your page working best to go through this and get a good handle on it http://www.w3schools.com/bootstrap/default.asp

Hi there
I have a problem when I'm trying to make a portfolio with bootstrap
I'm trying to put a full width background image
the image is nested on a container-fluid class div element
but there are white spaces at left and right sides of the image

@LPR-309
Sep 25 2016 03:07
@ecckyel Have you tried using background-size: cover in your CSS? The image might be too small resolution-wise for your screen
This is if you're applying it to the outermost container

LPR-309
@LPR-309
Sep 25 2016 03:13
@eccekyel Okay, you want to apply the ID for that to the div with the container-fluid class
What's happening is a natural result of nesting, there's a bit of a space there due to the way the boxes are aligned
I think alternatively you could set negative margins on the current div, but I don't know how that'd affect other things later on, possibly

@AmitP88 Love the creativity you put into this portfolio. but you have your skills after a conclusion of your portfolio; just seems a little off to me and lacks the creativity the rest of the page has (maybe some icons?).
Also, how about an icon for the tab?

@AmitP88 Hello, Amit. I like the clean look to the page. However, it seems like there is a bit too much white space between sections and elements, and all white seems a bit sterile. Perhaps you could use some subtle shading for each section of the page. I didn't notice the collapsed navigation right away, and I wasn't sure what those animated sliding icons did until I clicked on them. I do like the smooth scroll.

Hello people! I am working on my tribute page: audreydogbeh.com/projects/mattcorby
I am happy with how it looks on desktops, but I have an issue with the look on mobile. I have the background image set with this CSS:

body {
    background: #000 url('../images/mattcorbysmall.jpg') no-repeat left top fixed;
    -webkit-background-size: cover;
    -moz-background-size: cover;
    -ms-background-size: cover;
    -o-background-size: cover;
    background-size: cover;
    font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif;
    color: #ddd;
}

@media (min-width:768px){
    body{
        background: #000 url('../images/mattcorby.jpg') no-repeat left top fixed;
        -webkit-background-size: cover;
        -moz-background-size: cover;
        -ms-background-size: cover;
        -o-background-size: cover;
        background-size: cover;
        font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif;
        color: #ddd;
    }
}

(the media query is here to avoid loading the larger image on small devices and saving a bit of data)

When I load the page on my phone (Samsung Galaxy S4 - Chrome), the background image is all zoomed in. "cover" does not seem to work here. I would love any piece of advice here and if you see something else that looks weird on a different device, the feedback is very welcome. Thanks!

@MohammadHasham - I haven't started on it too much, other than experimenting with setting up the grid and placement of X and O marks on it. You might just try to start there, set up the functionality to click and put a mark on various places in the grid, and I'm sure that it will slowly come along...

@MohammadHasham - I haven't gotten to that point - but if you start with a basic setup of a grid, make your "AI" be a randomizer and recognize the empty locations and three in a row, that is the way I would start. Look up how to do the AI code and then plug it in to what you already have?

@sjames1958gm No errors at all. In the nav bar it shows the tracking icon with a red message indicator. When I click on it the message that the tracking has been blocked comes up, I go in to create an exception and my page is listed along with Free Code Camp but it still will not work. When I run the pen through Code Pen or click on the pen in this message chain (using Chrome) it works just fine. It's only when I try to run stand alone I get blocked. Made de-bugging a real treat :)

@zarruk devtools console. event.replace is not a function. You probably don't want to getJSON on each key but only on enter key.
  $("#search").on("keydown", function(e) {
    if (e.keyCode == 13) {
      e.preventDefault();
      handleSearch();

Stephen James
@sjames1958gm
Sep 25 2016 14:31
@Annallon One idea is to request more quotes at page load and just randomly loop over them or do that on click. (posts_per_page)
$.getJSON("http://quotesondesign.com/wp-json/posts?filter[orderby]=rand&filter[posts_per_page]=10&callback=", function(a) {

 var index = lastIndex;
  while (index == lastIndex) {
    var index = Math.floor(Math.random() * 10);
  }
  lastIndex = index;
 Quote= a[index].content;
 Title= a[index].title;
@zarruk Yes 13 is enter key - sorry was afk
@zarruk handleSearch is just my function that does the search (called from button click or enter key).
e.preventDefault() prevents the default behavior of the enter key (probably no effect her, but if you are using a form this can keep the form from submitting)

@BadBoyBennion @abundantmind we didn't cover navigation, that's what they mean with the "read-search-ask" and the "figure it out for yourself part", the thing about free code camp is that it doesn't teach all you need to tackle the challenges
@BadBoyBennion @abundantmind so you basically have to come up with a portfolio that you'll later fill up with the other challenges
@BadBoyBennion @abundantmind you can use placeholders, here's my pen, maybe it'll help you better visualize what they want https://codepen.io/serg337/pen/bZOwXA

Sep 25 2016 17:35
@serg337 You need to have a Twitch Client ID - it is free to get one. You can a href to the FCC for the online status. Then you need to add the id to the url as well as the header of the ajax call and do not have a callback. The new error message for no accounts is 404. I hope this is helpful.
Sergio

Sep 25 2016 17:38
@KoniKodes Hi! I do have the client ID, and I’ve already made 2 different stream list pages, the thing is that the rules are so ambiguous…for exxample, I already did a page that lists out the array of 25 streams, and I also did one where I list out specific users previously defines in an array, my problem is that I don’t know if I’m on the right track or not, cause I can’t quite understand the user stories
a particular problem is with the fcc channel, since it’s closed and not streaming, I can’t get any info on it
I could submit either one of the one’s I’ve developed, but that’s my problem, I don’t cause I’m confused about the user stories :(
Toni Shortsleeve

Sep 25 2016 17:41
@serg337 can you show me your pen? You just need to say if FCC is online or not, and then link to the page either way. They want you to be able to show all 3 categories: online, offline, no account. Then have a button that shows all, who is online only and who is offline only (no Account is not needed). It should look something like this: https://codepen.io/KoniKodes/full/pbPvGj/

@zarruk My error, although you may still want to call the async: false. Look at your console log. You are telling it to return the myVar which is the keyboard is entered. You are not telling it to return the search results, but the search term. So your console is returning what was typed in the search box.

@mhdavis On codepen, you have add the bootstrap for css, but it needs something like this <meta name="viewport" content="user-scalable=no, initial-scale=1, maximum-scale=1, minimum-scale=1, width=device-width, height=device-height" /> if the html settings so that it knows to resize everything to the viewport size. Under stuff for head. Also, your header links should be placed into the css settings as additional stylesheets, and not in the html coding. This is only true for codepen.
Michael Davis
@mhdavis
Sep 25 2016 18:51
@KoniKodes so do you suggest putting the navbar content and such into a header instead of the body and moving any links referenced in the html to the css conected with those elements?
also I'm not super familiar with fixing the <meta> so I guess i should google that to see what sort of things its responsible for in the html
it seems like from what you are suggesting it mainly affects how elements on the page fit depending on the device loading the page
Toni Shortsleeve
@KoniKodes
Sep 25 2016 18:53
@mhdavis No, that's is not necessary. try this for the nav: <body data-spy="scroll" data-target=".navbar" data-offset="0">
<!-- navigation --> Yes, exactly - the page is resizable with bootstrap help, but you need to size according to viewport - so it's better to add it (in the meta tag). Google viewport and resize, see if that helps.
Michael Davis
@mhdavis
Sep 25 2016 18:55

also adding stuff you suggested to the body made it so as I scroll down the page, the particular sectiont that im on in the page is highlighted in the navbar, which is pretty neat

@mhdavis Instead of push, use offset instead:

        <div class="col-md-2 col-md-offset-1">
          <img class="smaller-image" id="profile-pic" src="https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/611301315264839681/43NNwpaH.jpg" alt="Picture of Me">
        </div>

        <div class="col-md-7 col-md-offset-2" id="jumb-info">

Adjust the top and bottom margins of your profile picture to position it correctly on smaller screen sizes.

@mhdavis Yes, especially the scales and width / height. This tells it to scale down to fit. Allowing the user to control the scale is optional.

@TylerMoeller I swapped out the push for offsets. on the backend does that adjust the cols without creating more space internally with the cols? also it pushed the id="jumbo-info" portion further from the round img, can this be fixed by playing with the padding?

@mhdavis It has the same effect as adding an empty column before the content. If you want less space between the image and the text, change the offset to 1:
<div class="col-md-8 col-md-offset-1" id="jumb-info">

@KoniKodes as for the <link> elements, how do i put them into the css?
@KoniKodes I also included the <meta> line but am not sure on how to tweak the settings to make sure things are working properly
@TylerMoeller yea that works perfectly, the problem i still run into tho is if you decrease the width of the page, the bottom social media buttons still clip out from the jumbotron section
@TylerMoeller likewise, decreasing the page width also results in the lettering "designs built from first principles" overlaping a little with the image
p.s. @TylerMoeller and @KoniKodes thanks for taking the time really appreciate it!

@mhdavis Yeah, you'll need to adjust the top and bottom margins of your profile picture to prevent that from happening.

@TylerMoeller i tweaked the margin-bottom on the picture so now the social media buttons stay in the jumbtron frame
but for some reason tweaking the margin-right doesn't seem to change the spacing on the lettering to the right of the picture

fun stuff
tfw I spend the past 30 minutes wondering why my newbie react app is not working and trying all sort of debugging only to find out that I was using module.exports like this "module.exports(MyModule)" instead of this "module.exports = MyModule"

@ronlaniado one suggestion i would make is when it becomes small enough, you change the tabs to a dropdown menu
here is an example of what I mean. If you make the screen display smaller, the navbar changes to a drop down
