hey guys, I just started up my old job and the hours are going to be long, but I still plan on looking for web dev jobs. I live about 4 hrs away from LA (where I want to get a web dev job), so since i'm working so many hours (12 hr shifts initially), I don't think i'd be able to drive there for interviews. Would it be ok to simply go by Skype interviews?

Hi everyone :) I'm trying to figure out how to let someone send me a message and their email for my first portfolio project, any ideas? i've it up on google but there are a zillion different ways lol
Alex Rapley
@arapl3y
Sep 27 2016 04:52
Hey guys, so I built a random quote app using an array of quotes and an array of authors but I'm having trouble with the randomisation feature as sometimes it repeats the same quote twice or even three times in a row. Does anyone know of a solution? http://codepen.io/arapley/pen/YGGgLm
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Sep 27 2016 04:54
add more quotes @arapl3y, you only have a few
i have like 40
Alex Rapley
@arapl3y
Sep 27 2016 04:55
@coymeetsworld Appreciate the answer but surely there must be a way to prevent repetition even with only 3 quotes, like for instance canceling each used quote out until all have been used then reseting the group... I just don't know how to implement it
Greg Duncan
@GregatGit
Sep 27 2016 04:56
@arapl3y I set up an empty arr and everytime I used a quote I put the index into the arr. Then after generating a new index I would check if it had been used first
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Sep 27 2016 04:57
you could do taht @arapl3y, but just would be more complicated
than just adding more quotes
you use a large enough number the risk of getting same quote twice is minimal
if you use 20 thats a 400:1 chance against
7 is only 49:1
sorry 399:1 and 48:1 but yeah same idea
Alex Rapley
@arapl3y
Sep 27 2016 04:59
@coymeetsworld Totally understand the rationale! I guess I'd just rather see if I can eliminate the chance all together
@GregatGit Cool, that's along the lines of what I'm thinking, cheers
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Sep 27 2016 04:59
@arapl3y then you would need to cache the random number
if you want it so that you don't see a duplicate until you see all of them then you would need like an array or something like @GregatGit said
you can just push the values in there and use something like indexOf to check if its there
but i think that's overkill, and 7 quotes isn't that interesting IMO but yeah up to you
Alex Rapley
@arapl3y
Sep 27 2016 05:03
@coymeetsworld Haha yeah I already completed one using an API with hundreds of quotes. It's more about the challenge than it being interesting or useful. I'll have a crack using an array and indexOf... Thanks man.

Sep 27 2016 05:04
I see alright then yeah np @arapl3y
another thing you could do is create an empty array for the quotes you used
pop the quote from the unused quote array and push into used
if the unused quote array is empty swap it with the used
maybe logic would be a little better that way

@JackEdwardLyons set your 'choose oponent' div to display none in CSS and display it with javascript when you need it to appear, it will avoid the 'flash' when page loads
and for me when I click X or O, nothing happens

          function decrease () {

              if (opacity <= 0) {
                opponent_button_container.setAttribute("style", "display: block; opacity: 1;");
                // complete fadOut for both buttons
                element.style.display = "none";
                //opponent_button_container.style.display = "none"
                return true;
              }
              element.style.opacity = opacity;
              setTimeout(decrease, fps);

@annunirmal your inner loop is breaking everything .
first j must be less than i so j<i not j<=i and your sum starts with2 i.e., sum = 2
and i=3

@lukearthwalker What's in a personal portfolio? At a basic level?

  1. Info about yourself
  2. Work you've done.
  3. Contact info.

There you have three sections of your portfolio page already.

@lukearthwalker , I agree with @JohnDeegs . Also, it might help to look at people's protfolio's to get some ideas. Some of them may be highly sophisticated or advanced. But you can just look at how they have organized the information or what information they have included in their portfolio.

@lukearthwalker Let's look at the user stories and see what we can do.

User Story: I can access all of the portfolio webpage's content just by scrolling.

That's easy, this is just saying that this will be a single page application.

User Story: I can click different buttons that will take me to the portfolio creator's different social media pages.

Go back to the button section on basic HTML section and this will help you.

User Story: I can see thumbnail images of different projects the portfolio creator has built (if you haven't built any websites before, use placeholders.)

Again, how would you approach using a thumbnail, is it a normal image? Is it something you can use with bootstrap.

User Story: I navigate to different sections of the webpage by clicking buttons in the navigation.

Again, there's a section about this in the basic HTML section.

@lukearthwalker Take everything I've said and do it one at a time.

Hi! Question on jQuery:

I am trying to add a banner to my Tic Tac Toe project where it asks you if you want X or O. I do that with a jQuery .html call, but after, I would like the banner to go away when I click one of the buttons: X or O. Is there a way to do that? to turn off the .html call? Thank you.

$("#preGame").html("<div class=\"preGameSet\"><p class=\"questionPG\">Do you want to play X's or O's?</p><div class=\"btnArea\"><button class=\"preGameBtn\" onclick=\"switchOX();\">X</button><button class=\"preGameBtn\" onclick=\"switchOX();\">O</button></div></div>");
Here the project if you want to have a look: http://codepen.io/bcnjordi9/pen/YGNVoa

Completing the Tribute Page project. The author of the example project claims there is no CSS in their implementation. If so, how do they get the gray background? I can’t find any bootstrap classes which produce this without custom styling.

Sep 27 2016 15:53
@davidpickup You can always do inline styling. However, you can create your tribute page in any way you'd like. Experiment. The project example is just to give you an idea of what they're looking for but you can make it your own

@JLuboff OK, must be online styling. Just wanted to check there wasn't a bootstrap container I was missing that did this. Going to make the page my own style, but still understand how the example could be replicated.

@belodpav why do you use an empty div class col-xs-1 before and after a div class col-xs-10? you can just use the div class col-xs-10 and also add class col-xs-offset-1

@ChinuxParibus I used bootstrap framework for grid system + own styles for styling the page more flexible. Is it a good approach?
Jhony Alberto Grillet Medina
@ChinuxParibus
Sep 27 2016 16:01
Yeah, it's a good approach, since you can (and should) modify the Bootstrap styles. No problem with that!
Although, I guess you can use some CSS classes on Boostrap Framework to optimize your HTML code
So, when you want to make and offset between two columns, you can use de Bootstrap class col-xs-offset-{number}
Where {number} means the number of columns (and so the offset) you want to apply
Hope this can help you @belodpav

@sorinr Yes, you correct. I used these. I tried to code the page without <div class="col-xs-1"></div> and things like that but it doesn't work. I used it for white space from border to nesting elements. May be I do something wrong.
@ChinuxParibus Thank you very much. Yes, of course it helps me very much.

@Sigurdlex if you are trying in chrome - chrome doesn't allow getPosition from http:// sites.
getCurrentPosition() and watchPosition() no longer work on insecure origins. To use this feature, you should consider switching your application to a secure origin, such as HTTPS. See https://goo.gl/rStTGz for more details.

Sep 27 2016 18:50
@Sigurdlex You can load your pen over https:// and the get location will work but then your weather api will be blocked because http:// over https:// is not allowed.
You can add https://crossorigin.me/ to the front of your weather URL to get around that.

@vinaypuppal
Sep 27 2016 18:51
@Sigurdlex I think the easiest solution is to use Weather Underground's autoip weather url which works over HTTP/HTTPS and gives you ip-based location + weather_data + icon_img_url all in one URL. https://api.wunderground.com/api/<API KEY>/conditions/q/autoip.json

@Wilson-Oberholzer - one thing that you have to watch out for, with CodePen, is that CodePen uses a template to generate your page. So you would have a possible problem with things being loaded in different order than you are anticipating, for example, your HTML panel, which should only be code that goes in the <body> section, it being loaded after your CSS panel, so that any settings in your custom CSS might be overridden by the CSS stylesheets that you have at the top of the body. SO - in CodePen: the HTML panel should only have HTML elements in it - but not the <html>, <head>, <body>, <style>, <script> and their closing tags. There are places in the HTML config for things that you might want to put into the head of the page, the CSS tab and config is for all CSS code and external sheets, and the JS tab for all JS-related info. Doing things other than that result in invalid HTML. That being said, it doesn't always cause a problem, but it could result in conflicts and things being loaded in an order that could cause problems, and definitely I've seen problems on mobile devices with some of these things.

Move your CSS stylesheets that you are loading into the CSS config external libs slots, remove them from your HTML editor panel. Take out the <body> tags. Give that a try and see if it helps...

But here it's working: http://behindthemath.ga/working.html?

@alessiochiffi
hi everyone! Two days ago I received a call for a job interview..junior web designer position. They asked me if I can do a brief converting a PSD file in html and css and making a new dashboard
I did everything but I have a doubt
How I will send the files to them?
A zip file with all the folders and files(img, css, js, file.html) should be enough?

@BehindTheMath This is only difference between both if you add below css to broken.html it will look same as working.html

body {
    padding-top: 50px;
}

oh took this much long time to debug :smile:

@RKZoltan Generally use p tags for paragraphs, h tags for heading and li for lists. There are reasons for this beyond just how it looks on the page which you will soon discover.

@vinaypuppal I know, but what's causing the discrepency?

@BehindTheMath the nav bar isposition: fixed so it is taken out of document flow so .container-fluid div will not think it has navbar above it so it starts at top and since bootstarp gave high z-index for navbar so its over your div
@BehindTheMath so you need to add some padding to avoid that issue and if you can see in dev tools bootstrap has done same for .sidebar you added it gave top:51px so sidebar is not behind navbar

The other page does not have position:fixed?
Where is that set?
I don't see it
Ah, found it

@BehindTheMath position:fixed added by bootstrap as u used .navbar-fixed-top class

@vinaypuppal I understand your solution, but I don't understand why it's different without that. They both have the same claases.

Sep 27 2016 23:25
@BehindTheMath oh okay
@RKZoltan You can center image by adding text-align: center to container div of image
@RKZoltan like this
<div class='image-container'>
<img src="url"/>
</div>
.image-container{
text-align: center
}
