Oct 10 2016 01:22

If anyone has some free time to spare, I'd love some feedback on my first project the tribute page: http://codepen.io/allanpooley/pen/pEadrp

I particularly want to improve the typography / way text appears on the page. Is there a way to center it is a tighter horizontally (I suppose a bit like a book) without sacraficing responsivity?

Take the <br /> between the paragraphs out, I think thats giving you a big space in between the paragraphs, but I also think you should bring up the font size on the paragraph tags as it is pretty hard to read on higher screen resolutions.

I have a some tabs that i want in a row, centered and spaced. They are made of ul and li with icons as buttons. I need the icon with the text bellow it, and a checkmark on the top right of the corner.

I have this setup on the page that i want but I don't like the markup so I cleaned and smilled up and I'm trying to get it to look the way I want it with flexbox. @jdtdesigns

@joyinthenow Unfortunately, unless you have a photographic memory it's almost impossible in a shorter time frame. The current ad trend is to declare you fit for jobs in 6 months. This is a blatant lie imo just to get your money. The reality of web dev is it's one of the hardest trades out there right now.

@jdtdesigns That makes total sense to me. I was giving myself a year, which is the time line this program suggests but its sounding like that might not be reasonable...
JD Tadlock
@jdtdesigns
Oct 10 2016 04:31
@joyinthenow Pretty much every source for learning out there tells you 6 months to a year. The problem that I see on a constant basis is you can't soak anything in, in that short of a time span. You can definitely work your butt off and look at a lot of stuff and read, and code 5 hours a day. The problem is most people get burned out and take breaks during that time and the stuff they coded 5 hours a day on is forgotten. So you just go back to the beginning in a perpetual cycle. It takes repetition on a massive scale to really grasp, understand and remember this stuff.
Just imagine setting a goal to learn Chinese, Spanish and German in 6 months. Do you think you're capable of that?
As crazy as it sounds, that's basically the same amount of knowledge you're trying to cram when learning code.
Marina
@joyinthenow
Oct 10 2016 05:06
@jdtdesigns yeah, that makes total sense. I don't think it sounds crazy that it should take time to take in and understand this stuff. I was just misinformed and did not do enough research so Im glad I voiced my concerns. I really appreciate your response since it has possibly saved me time in figuring out if web design (this program) is really what I want to do. I still have a lot to think about but Thank you very much!

Oct 10 2016 05:51
@JackEdwardLyons hey, one thing I notice is when you look at the markup your jQuery makes it ends up with <h3><h3></h3></h3> for the top header
your elements shouldn't wrap like that, you should probably put them in a div with 2 h3 elements
it all looks centered and I think this is a really cool project! are you doing this solo or is this a new FCC project?
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 10 2016 05:58

can you explain a bit more please @karpimpski
Michael Karpinski
@karpimpski
Oct 10 2016 06:00
@JackEdwardLyons yeah, sure thing. when you make new elements with jQuery like you did, it adds new elements to the actual HTML that you page shows. you can view this by typing ctrl + shift + i
with CodePen you have to go to the full view and then navigate through the mess of div elements that appear
first open the result-iframe-wrap div, and then the iframe element, and then where it says #document. this is the HTML that your original HTML and your jQuery generate
then, when you go into your HTML and open the original h3 element you can see that there is another h3 element in there. it really doesn't matter much in this case since your page still works, but it's extremely useful to know how to view the HTML your JavaScript is creating and it's best practice to not wrap elements like h3 and p, and instead put them in a div element

flex is cool
i happened to stumble on columns on my way to using flex
and columns seemed to work well
but now is my new problem of adding extra content!
Michael Karpinski
@karpimpski
Oct 10 2016 06:18
@JackEdwardLyons yeah, I'm trying to figure out a way to make your images flex without distorting the image itself, so that way you can just add justify-content to the CSS for your a tags and make the icons center easily
that way you don't have to add a bunch of content to your page

Evan W
@Dirtier

all you have to do is set the width of the image to a % or like vw
if you only change the width it will scale it
so it doesn't get distorted

true, good point @Dirtier
Evan W
@Dirtier
Oct 10 2016 06:22
@jdtdesigns can you not do stuff like that with modals? I've tried doing this probably 12 different ways now
Michael Karpinski
@karpimpski
Oct 10 2016 06:22
@JackEdwardLyons yeah, the reason it works for smaller screens is you have a percentage for the size of the images and a set em value on bigger screens
if you set it to a percentage on bigger screens then it SHOULD horizontally align the right way
as far as vertical centering, vertical-align or whatever that modifier is called is actually for tables, not div elements. there are a bunch of ways to vertically center divs though
JD Tadlock
@jdtdesigns
Oct 10 2016 06:23
@Dirtier There's a way
looking through it now
Evan W
@Dirtier
Oct 10 2016 06:23
thanks a lot man
I probably should have worked this in from the start >.<
I'm kind of working backwards lol, adding the AI and the choice of marker at the end
when I did it without the modal and just used another v-if div, it wouldn't transition for some reason. plus it didn't look as good, so I just went back to the modal again
Michael Karpinski

Does anyone know how to change the background color and font color of the bootstrap menu, but only when it is collapsed by clicking the navbar-toggle button?
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Oct 10 2016 11:15
@Spence93 - Not sure if this is the only problem, but one thing that you have in there that could cause a problem is that you are using bootstrap, overriding some classes (it appears) and then you have another re-load of bootstrap in your HTML panel. The way what CodePen works, it will cause your bootstrap overrides to be overridden again - remove the stylesheet link from the top of your HTML panel, you already have the bootstrap.css loaded in your CSS external libs, which is where it belongs, for CodePen's methodology, anyway. Also, if you go to the HTML panel config, you can insert the most common viewport meta tag (the button at the bottom.) See if that will help in any way?
Matt
@Spence93
Oct 10 2016 11:21
@khaduch ok cool just removed it and now something is overriding my image sizing class's so the 2 on the right have got smaller, also should I not be using margin-left to center images? I'm pretty sure I tried the center-block class and it wasn't doing anything
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Oct 10 2016 11:22
@Spence93 - my suggestion alone will not fix it, it seems. You have some other problem going on in your CSS code, because if I comment all of it out, the responsiveness seems to get a little better, of course it changes other styles... but there is some other problem, and my time to look is very limited right now.
Matt

@khaduch
Oct 10 2016 11:24
@Spence93 - using margin settings to try and center the image is generally not good for responsiveness, unless you use margin: 0 auto; which should center. I'm going to take one quick look again.
Matt
@Spence93
Oct 10 2016 11:25
i used margin because the col-md-* was causing all images to be left aligned, not split evenly across the page
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Oct 10 2016 11:25
@Spence93 - also, on line 35 or thereabouts, you are missing a > on your h6 tag - probably a minor thing, but could be causing some issues down the line.
@Spence93 - using margin that way will definitely get you in trouble for responsiveness.

@Spence93 pasting your code directly into the validator would be better. now what you got were the errors from codepen itself.
But it was bad idea to begin with. Codepen code & code validators don't go well together. It's a good idea when you develop locally. Like this- pretty pointless, unless you want to go through pointless errors. your html code

I have a question about nested lists. In the tutorials (16-18) Colt puts the nested list inside the previous list item. That seems awkward, as it is hard to keep track of where you are. Putting the nested list under the previous (closed) list item looks cleaner and accomplishes the same thing. Is one way more correct than the other, or is this one of those either/or situations? A codepen illustrating what I'm talking about is (I hope) below. Thanks! http://codepen.io/gdickison/pen/xEWBZz

@799arman You need to get around the cross origin problem - here is an ajax call to that api that does it.
$('#quoteAJAX').click(function() {
  $.ajax({
      url: "http://api.forismatic.com/api/1.0/",
      jsonp: "jsonp",
      dataType: "jsonp",
      data: {
        method: "getQuote",
        lang: "en",
        format: "jsonp"
      }
    })
    .done(update)
    .fail(handleErr);
});
update is success handler function

@Spence93 @kat-mag - just got back to the computer. I use the validator, but I always do it this way with CodePen code - use the browser's "View Frame Source" to get the results of CodePen's output into the browser frame. Then I copy that and paste it directly into the validator's direct text input panel, then validate. It does come up with garbage sometimes, but definitely helps to get things cleaned up with things that are out of balance - missing tags, illegal constructs, etc. Helpful most of the time!

@vuvu10 - a couple things - you have a semicolon instead of a colon in your declaration for the class .silver-background. Then you have to add that class to the <div using class="silver-background", and if all goes well, it should work.

@sw333zy If it is its child, you can use the child selector >
<h3>
    <span class="tagline">Target this span</span>
    <span>This is another span element. We don't want to target this one</span>
</h3>
if this is the HTML structure maybe this will work:
h3 > span .tagline {

h2 {

I think i just searched random quote api
and the api's site is http://quotesondesign.com/
They give sample code on how to implement
but you can check out my project if that doesn't make sense . http://codepen.io/eweiss17/pen/pbYZLE

im trying to have the red line interset the right top corner of the black box
however, even though i have all the units in percentages, when i resize the window
the red line moves all over the place away from the box
