Oct 14 2016 01:22
@atrivedi1 You can automatically do that
First of all I'm pretty sure githib already does that, second you can use programs that handle git for you. Like I use GitKraken, and I <3 it
Takes a bit of know-how to set it up though

Hey guys, how can I use a variable in an API call? Something like this:

$.ajax .....
    url: 'randomurl',
    data: {
                 something: VARIABLE
}

Were the var changes depending on what happened on a different function.

It doesn't seem to work on that implementation

Is it only taking quoted data pairs? Or is something else going on?

@jawaka72 this might help
function isScrolledIntoView(elem)
{
    var docViewTop = $(window).scrollTop();
    var docViewBottom = docViewTop + $(window).height();

    var elemTop = $(elem).offset().top;
    var elemBottom = elemTop + $(elem).height();

    return ((elemBottom <= docViewBottom) && (elemTop >= docViewTop));
}
so basically you just want to be able to detect where the user is on the page, then apply an opacity/class/whatever to that a tag
thats ^ from stackoverflow, but its the same in principle

@jawaka72 Oh, if you don't know JS yet then I wouldn't even attempt it haha. Btw, your project doesn't have to be exactly like the example. It just needs to be functionally similar, meaning it accomplishes the same purpose. It doesn't even need to look like it
Anthony
@jawaka72
Oct 14 2016 01:56
That's good to know. I was trying to make it as similar as possible and then afterwards style it my own way. I wasn't sure if the scrolling effect could be done with just css.

wamps
@wamps
Oct 14 2016 05:43
Just trying to finish the layout for my portfolio. I am trying to create social buttons and then fix up the collapsible navbar.
My social buttons have gone horribly wrong. lol
I have four anomalies that turned up when I added the buttons (the first one) and the buttons refuse to turn to color:white;

contact .btn{

color: white;
boxing-size: border-box;
}
As far as I understand, it should be fine to call a class as a child to an ID?
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 14 2016 05:46
other way around
btn .contact
or?
.contact .btn
put up your pen @wamps
I think '#' is used to call an ID and '.' to call a class. The Contact section is id="contact" and I gave the buttons class="btn". To add CSS, shouldn't it be #id .class {}?
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 14 2016 05:52
yeah
you are correct
let me see your code
you want the buttons to be white hey?
wamps
@wamps
Oct 14 2016 05:53
The fonts, yes.
And to remove those four anomalies. I have no idea what caused those.
I know that the anomalies appeared when I added the buttons to the Contact section. Why they're there, I don't understand. I only placed four buttons so I don't understand where the four broken buttons come from.
Jack Lyons

Oct 14 2016 06:31
Oh, that's a neat idea. I could specifically change the color of each button, which would only ever appear once.
Leaving the rest of the font set untouched in the rest of the page.

Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Oct 14 2016 08:35
@wamps - usually it means that you need to add jquery.js and bootstrap.js to your JS external libraries, in that order... and it looks like that is the case...
wamps
@wamps
Oct 14 2016 08:36
After the footer in the HTML?
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Oct 14 2016 08:37
@wamps - on CodePen, you should add them in the JS config panel, there are quick links to add them. CodePen will put them in the correct place. You should also use the CSS panel for your stylesheet additions, as you did for bootstrap.css
wamps
@wamps
Oct 14 2016 08:39

I don't know what you meant about the stylesheets, though. Did I put something in the wrong place in my CSS?
Unfortunately, getting this navbar collapse working meant that I lost my gradient for the navbar background :cry:
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Oct 14 2016 08:42
@wamps - at the top of your HTML panel, you have a google font and a load of font-awesome.css. CodePen works best if you put those in the CSS config panel, since it uses a template-based system to load the page. There is a quick link for font-awesome, if you just go to an empty external library slot and type font-awesome. The google font you just have to put the href value in there.
wamps
@wamps
Oct 14 2016 08:43

@wamps - it doesn't look like the gradient is there even without the two libs?
@wamps - you don't have #myNavBar spelled the same way in your CSS selector?
wamps
@wamps
Oct 14 2016 08:45
Oh? I'll look.
In the CSS I call #myNavBar and in the HTML it is id="myNavBar".
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Oct 14 2016 08:46
I still don't see a gradient., even after I changed the selector to match?
wamps
@wamps
Oct 14 2016 08:47
haha I had all of this working before I started working on the collapse. Now, the code is getting too long and I am having trouble following it all.
When I work in C#, I try to keep all of my classes under 100 lines for this reason.
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Oct 14 2016 08:49
@wamps - maybe the gradient is just very subtle? My eyes aren't working too well at this early hour.
wamps
@wamps
Oct 14 2016 08:50
Nah, it goes from full black to 0 opacity. You'd see it.
It's full black at left and centre, fading to 0 opacity on the right.
Like rgba(0, 0, 0, 255) for left & centre and rgba(0, 0, 0, 0) on the right.
But, not pure black. rgba(50, 50, 50, 255)
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Oct 14 2016 09:03
@wamps - well, I guess that I can see it in firefox, maybe not in Chrome? I reloaded the page, and I still see that in your HTML you have the ID attribute set to myNavbar, and your selector in CSS was #myNavBar - different spellings. So you need to make those match, maybe you did fix it and didn't save it, so I didn't see it when I reloaded?
anyway - I'm outta here for now... :)
wamps
@wamps
Oct 14 2016 09:04
You can see the gradient? I'm on Firefox and can't.
Anyway, thanks for your feedback. Have a good one.
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Oct 14 2016 09:07
@wamps - if I turn the selector on and off, I see the background change, but ever so slightly... it does change, as long as I have the same spelling for myNavbar in both places...
wamps
@wamps
Oct 14 2016 09:08
I don't understand the spelling difference. Do you mean the '#'?
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Oct 14 2016 09:10
@wamps - no, in your HTML, you have it named myNavbar, with a lowercase 'b' and in the CSS selector, you have #myNavBar, with an UPPERCASE B...
wamps
@wamps
Oct 14 2016 09:10
Oh, shit. It should be upper case!
I overlooked it.
Thanks, mate.
I better let you go. Have fun and see you soon.
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Oct 14 2016 09:11
@wamps - I'm glad I explained with more descriptive notes... :) have a great day, too... :sleepy: Just make sure you get it all the same in your HTML, too, so your navbar collapse will still work! ;)

Hello everyone,I've just encountered a very strange problem while making the Wikipedia Viewer project. It's not ready and the design is not final(it kinda looks like exactly the same as the example project,which isn't that good) and it has some test stuff in the html and js files for later api usage thing. Sebastián Ventura

Oct 14 2016 15:16

It's a quick one, I guess, I'm using the openweathermap api and trying to dynamically set the parameters for the call.

I have a var called country and another one called city. They are fed info through a different call on this other API: http://ip-api.com/json .

So my example would be:

city: Montevideo
country: UY

My problem is I cannot seem to enter those parameters on the second api call, the one with openweather

I've tried a couple of things, like:

    $.ajax({
      url: 'http://api.openweathermap.org/data/2.5/weather?q=' + city + ',' + country,

But the link on the request doesn't reflect those two variables at all, it just blanks them up

is city a global variable you created?

Sebastián Ventura

Yes, both are global. In fact, if I try to alert any of those two on the AJAX's success function, I'll get Montevideo and UY as expected. The var is accessible

Sebastián Ventura

Sebastián Ventura

Oct 14 2016 18:48
You need to look for three or four potential inputs, @varEnigmatic, so make your structure something like this
if (prop is not "tracks" and value is not empty)....
else if (props is "tracks" and value is not empty)....
else if (value is empty) ....
else ....

And then change the object accordingly, so for instance, if the prop is not "tracks" and the value is not empty, you could try something like this:

collection[id][prop] = value;

So for a given ID, we will look for the prop and change its value.

That should give you a heads up

As for @thodorisanta, you said you never called an API right?
Spyrantis Theodoros
@thodorisanta
Oct 14 2016 18:53
@sevgit yeah
Sebastián Ventura
@sevgit
Oct 14 2016 18:54

Well I did that for the first time yesterday so take what I say with a grain of salt, haha

At first I used the W3C method you posted, but it looks like it doesn't work on every browser and some even require https connection, which bothers a lot. So what I did is call that API with JQUERY and the ajax method.

Make sure you add jquery to your codepen first
Basically click on the gear next to JS and where it says "Quick add" select JQuery
Spyrantis Theodoros
@thodorisanta
Oct 14 2016 19:00
@sevgit i already added it
Sebastián Ventura
@sevgit
Oct 14 2016 19:02
Great, then create call the ajax method:
$.ajax ({
    url: 'the api url here',

   success: function(response) {
   do something;
}
});
Every api call needs a success function. This will execute if we get a response from the API, which you should easily get

You will get a messy object, and you only need a couple of details, so to filter it down, you can use

response.city to get the city string and response.countryCode to get US, KR, TW...

You access to those details the same way you've done it before. The response you get is an OBJECT, and therefore both dot notation and bracket notation work to narrow it down

@sidthedesigner you can do something like this for the text:

body {
  font-size:100%
}

@media  only screen and (max-width: 400px) {
body { font-size:90%;}
}

Everything within the @media query will change the css rules once the criteria is met. In this case, really small devidces (screens less than 400px)

Does this make sense so far?

I was thinking maybe a Wordpress plugin and taking that route...

if you don't know how to program using a backend framework, then WP with woocommerce will probably be the best route
but be warned, woocommerce is a monster in itself
and will have you banging your head if you haven't used WP or a commerce plugin before
if you haven't used WP, you're in for a headache

figured...
I've used Wordpress in the past, but barely..
Definitely not at an advanced level...
If I can just bother you with one more question...

My new client wants two things I've never done before.
He is a yoga instructor, so he'd like for people to be able to book online...
Secondly, he wants to sell t-shirts etc through the site...
Which route would you recommend? I have vague experience with Python and have never done either aspect before.

hmm
there could be easier routes than WP for just t-shirts and booking

Oh really?
I know Wordpress has plugins, but if I can code it myself I'd rather that...

@jdtdesigns would be interested to get your opinion on something I'm working on. Could I send you a link?

https://www.shopify.com/sell/tshirts would be good to use for the t-shirts. You can then just link to your shopify shop from the site.
As far as booking, there are plenty of free booking software sites. @gbsimon87
For me, i would use firebase and just create a small db handler and some ui to book
but unless you know some advanced js, that would be tricky

Damn, I have no experience with databases
I guess I'll have to slowly dive into the backend

@gbsimon87 I'm sorry to have to blast you with reality, but I've heard way too much, 'I'm going to make this' lately. It can take years to get even intermediate at this trade.

Hi all, I am building my portfolio and I want to make it look similar to this site that I am in love with http://www.millennialmedia.com/ does anyone know how to make that site only swap out for my images and background images? I obviously tried looking at the code with CTRL+U but it's too advanced for me
