hey @thomas have you done the tic tac toe?
@RationalCoding
woops
can anyone help me with my tic tac toe? ive been soooo desperate for like 2 weeks now, i'm not sure how to progress

@JackEdwardLyons I've done it. What do you have so far?
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 15 2016 01:19
a mess of code
its getting a bit out of hand tbh
the code in questions is this:
function markRandomTiles(that, AI, array) {
    that.dataset.check = AI;
    that.classList.remove("active-tile");
    that.classList.add("inactive-tile");
    //array.push(that);
    array.push(that);
    console.log("that", array.push(that));
  }

else if (opponent === "AI") {
            if (player_mark === "X")  {

              markTiles(this, "X", "O", player_mark_X, i);

              let activeTiles = document.querySelectorAll(".active-tile");
                  alert(randomTile);
               let   randomTile = activeTiles[Math.floor(Math.random() * activeTiles.length)];
               alert(randomTile);
               markRandomTiles(randomTile, "O", player_mark_O)

              // player_mark_O.push(randomTile);
              // console.log(player_mark_O.push(randomTile));
              player_mark = "X";
im trying to just create a random placement for the computer
before embarking on the minimax
so I thought I could just go through all active tiles and pick a random tile for the computer, and I push it into an array (see console.log) and I collect the placements to compare against the winner arrays
but it's not updating, its just being overridden on each click
ive literally been stuck at this spot for 2 weeks now, just about to tear all my hair out, and i know my code is sloppy, i really need to re do it all.. but i just want to achieve this one piece of simple functionality
Thomas Mullen
@t-mullen
Oct 15 2016 01:22
@JackEdwardLyons It seems to work pretty well except for when the computer goes first. Let me take a look
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 15 2016 01:22
yeah ive only setup for playing as X ahgainst the computer
Thomas Mullen
@t-mullen

Code's not a mess. Pretty structured actually!
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 15 2016 01:22
HUMAN v HUMAN is ok
haha really?
ive got some refactoring to do wiht my markTiles() functions
but i just wanna get this one piece of functionality first
Thomas Mullen
@t-mullen
Oct 15 2016 01:26
Why is the else for that commented out? For when player_mark === "O"?
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 15 2016 01:27
because i want to just get the basic functionality done first
so yuou have to play with X
for now...
Ivan

Hey guys, can anyone provide some help with the intermediate algorithm challenge? Specifically the "Wherefore art thou" challenge
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 15 2016 01:27
and then i will uncomment the O code
yeah I can @gonzalezi2
Thomas Mullen
@t-mullen
Oct 15 2016 01:28
Oh you've disabled the player being O because it's not working. I see. Yeah, uncomment it so we can debug :)
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 15 2016 01:28
well, i don't think it would make a diff for now, cause I just dont understand why my activeTiles and randomTiles aren't being pushed into the array
but yeha ill uncomment it
Ivan
@gonzalezi2
Oct 15 2016 01:28
function whatIsInAName(collection, source) {
  var arr = [];
 //This is my first attempt. Solves half of all the challenges but unfortunately it is not the right one. Next I will try the filter method and hopefully I will get a better understanding of it
//My thought was I would use a for loop to iterate through each object in the collection array
    for (var i = 0; i < 3; i++) {
      //then I used a for...in loop to go through each key in source
      for (var key in source) {
       //and if there was a match between a key in source and a key in any of the 3 objects of the collection array, that object would get pushed to arr. Unfortunately, if this doesn't work if source has more than one property.
//You need collection[i][key] because collection is an array with nested objects
        if (source[key] === collection[i][key]){
          var total = arr.push(collection[i]);
        }
      }
    }
  // Only change code above this line
  return arr;
}

whatIsInAName([{ "a": 1, "b": 2 }, { "a": 1 }, { "a": 1, "b": 2, "c": 2 }], { "a": 1, "b": 2 });
This is what I have currently. It only works when source only has one property
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 15 2016 01:29
ok, so far so good @gonzalezi2
just one question... why is i less than 3
@gonzalezi2
shouldn' it be the length of collection?
Ivan
@gonzalezi2
Oct 15 2016 01:31
Because I noticed that collection only ever has 3 objects
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 15 2016 01:31
but what about other collections?
in general, the algorithm needs to work on a randomized collection
Ivan
@gonzalezi2
Oct 15 2016 01:32
Well I was just going off of the collections that the browser was checking against. I could easily change it to the length of collection
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 15 2016 01:32
ok
ok @RationalCoding if you refresh my codepen
i uncommented out the code
Ivan
@gonzalezi2
Oct 15 2016 01:34
I've changed it but still need to figure out a way to check against source with 2 properties. Would I need another if loop?
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 15 2016 01:35
well, use the hint
Object.keys(source)
@gonzalezi2
its handy
something like var sourceKey = Object.keys(source);
Ivan
@gonzalezi2
Oct 15 2016 01:36
Yeah I had tried that in the beginning but couldn't make it work initially which is why I'm using for..in loop instead. I'll have to see how i can modify my code to use Object.keys

That's what I did for my project!
Never got around to minimax
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 15 2016 01:41
yeah i just want random and then ill work on the minimax
instead of a loop @gonzalezi2 maybe something like filter is more understandable
collection.filter(function(itemInCollection)
Ivan
@gonzalezi2
Oct 15 2016 01:43
Yeah I'm trying the filter method now. I'm just more comfortable with for loops so that's why I started there. But I'm doing both filter and keys now
Thomas Mullen
@t-mullen

@JackEdwardLyons To get the AI to lead, you should make it play as soon as the opponent is selected.
Jack Lyons

Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 15 2016 01:44
why is that?
couldn't it work just fine if I go first?
just the same?
Thomas Mullen
@t-mullen
Oct 15 2016 01:44
Well you don't go first if you choose "O" right?
I don't quite understand how you're handling those buttons. What's wrong with putting listeners on each one?
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 15 2016 01:45
i did initially
but i refactored it into a function
Thomas Mullen
@t-mullen
Oct 15 2016 01:45
It seems to work, but it's a bit harder to read.
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 15 2016 01:45
anyway, that doesn't solve the random tile function
yeah
i know sorry
my code is messy
when the computer places a mark, i need to update teh player_mark array
but it's just being overridden
and not updated
Thomas Mullen
@t-mullen
Oct 15 2016 01:48
So markRandomTiles(randomTile, "O", player_mark_O); doesn't actually change the player_mark_O array, even though you're pushing to it inside that function?
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 15 2016 01:49
yeah
it just marks the number
but doesn't update for the next turn
in the console log
check player X
it gets updated
refresh the pen, i updated it
@RationalCoding then check the console when playing as X against the computer
Thomas Mullen
@t-mullen
Oct 15 2016 01:52
@JackEdwardLyons This is really strange

I tried logging around where you actually push inside that function

    console.log(array);
    array.push(that);
    console.log(array);

And both logs are the same.

Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 15 2016 01:54
yeah
it's weird
but i dunno i feel like ive messed it all up anyway, i honestly feel as though I need to start from scratch again
thanks for the support @RationalCoding im going to head off and take a break

    array = [];
    console.log(array);

And the array doesn't change

Jack Lyons

ive been stumped on this for over 2 weeks now

Oct 15 2016 01:56
I'm inclined to thing this is some kind of bug with Codepen

Oct 15 2016 01:57
hmm.. i dunno, that a big call haha
ok
Thomas Mullen
@t-mullen
Oct 15 2016 01:57
Don't use the Babel compiler
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 15 2016 01:57
do yuou think it has something to do with this code
let activeTiles = document.querySelectorAll(".active-tile"),
                  randomTile = activeTiles[Math.floor(Math.random() * activeTiles.length)];
is the querySelectorAll the problem?
Thomas Mullen
@t-mullen
Oct 15 2016 01:57
No, that code is fine.
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 15 2016 01:57
yeah ok
Thomas Mullen
@t-mullen
Oct 15 2016 01:58
Maybe your uses of let is causing this?
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 15 2016 01:58
yeah maybe ill try a fresh pen without babel
tbh i have never used babel
i just wanted to try all the new ES 6 syntax
Thomas Mullen
@t-mullen
Oct 15 2016 01:59
Aha! That's what is was
You're declaring everything with let
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 15 2016 01:59
really?
Thomas Mullen
@t-mullen
Oct 15 2016 01:59
Which does a lot of weird things with scope. Honestly I never use it so I can't tell you why, but replacing with good ol' var seems to fix that issue.
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 15 2016 02:00
isn't let ok?
no way
haha
Thomas Mullen
@t-mullen
Oct 15 2016 02:00
No clue. I don't use it.
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 15 2016 02:00
thats so weird
Thomas Mullen
@t-mullen
Oct 15 2016 02:00
I don't use const either.
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 15 2016 02:00
yeah i just thought thats what all the cool kids are doing
haha
Thomas Mullen
@t-mullen
Oct 15 2016 02:00
I'm not saying you shouldn't use them, but definitely understand what they are doing before you risk it.,
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 15 2016 02:00
but honestly
that doesn't fix it
i read up on const and let and have some idea
but thats not hindering my code i dont think
Thomas Mullen
@t-mullen
Oct 15 2016 02:01
It lets me set the array.
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 15 2016 02:01
i think it's to do with the randomised tiles
Thomas Mullen
@t-mullen
Oct 15 2016 02:01
 array = [];
    console.log(array);
This will log [] now
Before it didn't
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 15 2016 02:01
really?
Thomas Mullen
@t-mullen
Oct 15 2016 02:02
Yeah, I've never seen direct assignment fail like that before. But removing let made it work
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 15 2016 02:02
weird
Thomas Mullen
@t-mullen
Oct 15 2016 02:02
There might be other issues, but that's just insane
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 15 2016 02:02
ok lemme ttry
but now the array still isn't being updated with push
it weird cause the markTiles function with the array tehre works fine
but not this array, i think it has to do with the index within the ForEach loop
i do this in the markTiles function array.push(index);
which is the index of the clicked tile
but i dont have an index for the random tile
but i do at the same time
that refers to the tile index in a way...
when i console.log(activeTIles) i get an empty array
Thomas Mullen
@t-mullen
Oct 15 2016 02:08
So assignment is working now, but not push

    console.log(array);

It's like your array is immutable
I've never seen anything like this.

hahaha
oh man
Thomas Mullen
@t-mullen
Oct 15 2016 02:18
I removed all of the ES6 code from your pen
And I just cannot assign to the items in that array
Jack Lyons
@JackEdwardLyons
Oct 15 2016 02:18
my only thought is that its just calling the function again and again but the data isn't persisting and i think its because of the randomTile variable
because it recognises randomTile and gives me a number, which is correct
but
Thomas Mullen
@t-mullen
Oct 15 2016 02:20
    console.log(array);
    console.log(array.length);
This logs and array with two items, then the number 0.
So it has two items in it, but it's length is 0

@t-mullen
Oct 15 2016 05:34
@c0d0er You can turn an array pair like ["a", "b"] into a key-value pair like {"a":"b"} like this:
function arrayToObject(arrayPair){
   var newObject = {};  //Make a new object. ie ["a", "b"]
   newObject[arrayPair[0]] = arrayPair[1]; //Make a key-value pair. ie newObject["a"] = "b";
   return newObject; //Return the object. ie {"a":"b"}
}
Might be better to set up your solution so you never have to convert though!

@thodorisanta Ok
1) [This one is just for clearness and therefore optional] Create a function getPosition() with the first getJSON in it.
2) Create a function showWeather(lat, long) with the second getJSON in it.
3) Put showWeather(dota.loc[0], dota.loc[1]); at the end of getPosition
4) $(document).ready(function() {getPosition();} ); // Call getPosition after document has finished loading

@albertmillert when you have fixed up your lat and long - just remember that in chrome a https page (which yours is in) is not permitted to do a http look up (which the free open weather api is)
Spyrantis Theodoros

Ghost
@ghost~57b1df1e40f3a6eec05f92a8
Oct 15 2016 10:43
@thodorisanta No :/ it is a string.
@thodorisanta So you gonna need .split
this works like "any_string".split("_"); // -> ["any", "string"]

@thodorisanta You can remove the showWeather() in your document.ready because it get called automatically by getPosition()

@Otto-AA so the final url would be:

@TylerMoeller It looks pretty straight forward to me, and I admit I completely forgot you could call a function inside of itself.

@knaguilar If you want to learn how to make AJAX requests use some quotes API else the remaining logic for showing quotes if you pull from API or use your own quotes is same .

@mikail1998 If you want to horizontally and vertically center Tic-Tac-Toe grid then do following
<div class= "flex-center col-md-4 col-md-offset-4">
     <table>
         <!-- Rest of your html -->
.flex-center{
  display: flex;
  justify-content: center;
  align-items: center;
}

@vinaypuppal now i reealized that after i finish playing a round of game i cant change the element im playing with
i mean if its an X after game finishes i cant change back to O
vínαч puppαl
@vinaypuppal
Oct 15 2016 19:41
@mikail1998 yeah i saw that, but i did not understand why you wrapped
rest of your logic inside this $('#iks').on('click', function(){ event handler, this is causing that problem

@vinaypuppal so what should i do?
vínαч puppαl
@vinaypuppal
Oct 15 2016 19:53
@mikail1998 sorry i was not able to find what's the actual problem , since you can understand your logic in better way , you can add debugger; statement inside click handler of x and o buttons and manually check execution of each step, this way may be you can find the actual issue

My console.log just returns 'object'. How can I see the content of the object? Code:
$(document).ready(function(){
  $.ajax({
            url: "https://api.fantasydata.net/soccer/v2/JSON/Areas?",
            beforeSend: function(xhrObj){
                // Request headers
                xhrObj.setRequestHeader("Ocp-Apim-Subscription-Key","758c2f5bca5944db8182597aff60f0d2");
            },
            type: "GET",
            // Request body

        })
        .done(function(data) {
            alert("success");
            console.log(data);
        })
        .fail(function() {
            alert("error");
        });
});

@robertridley1988 You can stringify it to see as plain text: console.log(JSON.stringify(data));
You can also use your browser's developer tools to expand the object and view each node one at a time.

I am working on my tribute page. Stuck on images. I have my images stored in AWS S3. How do I retrieve the images and link? (I'm using CodePen if that makes a difference.)

@Robertboan22 It's hard to answer without knowing how you have it set up. Typically you set up apache or another web server and serve over HTTP. A simple way to do it without a vps is to upload your photos to https://postimage.org/ and get the URL from there.
@hernanfda Send us a link to your codepen - or try the sample code at: http://www.w3schools.com/bootstrap/bootstrap_navbar.asp
