@jdtdesigns why did you use this logic?:
time = new Date().getTime() / 1000
time > json.sys.sunrise && time < json.sys.sunset
instead of 0 <= time < 12?
JD Tadlock
@jdtdesigns
Oct 25 2016 00:10
that's just the logic to get the night/day icon
can't use 12 because that's not the sunset time
silver537
@silver537
Oct 25 2016 00:11
my bad i meant 6 <= time < 18
is more on accuracy rather than standards?
JD Tadlock
@jdtdesigns
Oct 25 2016 00:12
you can't use fixed numbers
as the sunrise/sunset changes throughout the year
silver537
@silver537
Oct 25 2016 00:13
so sunrise and sunset has a standard format, thats why you used : time = new Date().getTime() / 1000
JD Tadlock
@jdtdesigns
Oct 25 2016 00:14
the api returns a timestamp which is just a huge number
i use the date object to get a timestamp
silver537
@silver537
Oct 25 2016 00:17
oh ok i think i got it. the api timestamp is 10 decimals. and the Date object returns 13 decimals. so you divided it by 1000 to reduce it to 10 decimals.. clever.

JD Tadlock
@jdtdesigns
Oct 25 2016 01:53
@varEnigmatic yes
@wlotherington4 Try this instead:
$(".nav a").on("click", function(){
   $(this).parent().addClass('active').siblings().removeClass('active');
});
JD Tadlock
@jdtdesigns
Oct 25 2016 01:58
or you could just use .nav li instead of .nav a
and then it would just be $(this).addClass('active').siblings().removeClass('active');

// you'll need to add a function to functions.php that hooks into login_enqueue_scripts
function custom_login_style() {
    wp_enqueue_style( 'login_style', '/css/login.css', false );
}

add_action( 'login_enqueue_scripts', 'custom_login_style', 999 );
@varEnigmatic

@tcao2 Looks good. There is a little flicker that happens when the new quote is not received before the fade in takes place. You're calling the same thing with loadQuote and getQuote. You could just set the click event on the button to fire getQuote and just run getQuote from the beginning. ;)

I'm using Bootstrap to build the tribute page project. My grid is working just fine, but the entire container is aligned to the left. I've tried using plain HTML to center it, wrapping it in another div with a class to center it, text-centered class, nothing works. I can get the text to center within the columns, but is there a way to have the whole grid centered?

JD Tadlock

@tcao2 The learning comes with a few steps. You watch or read, then you code what you learned. The coding is extremely important, because you will face errors and bugs you didn't see in the teacher's example. The most important tip is to code, code, code and then code some more. ;)
To 'learn' this stuff, it takes repetition on a grand scale.

@sperrye - the grid is composed of 12 columns, and you are only using 6, for example, in the first row. I think that you are not going to get the result that you want by doing that. There are ways to move things around within the row, some classes to shift the content over. You can also just forget about using the grid and center a div or image on the page - it depends on what you are planning for the long run?

Oct 25 2016 03:12

@sperrye - an example is to change your first row / col to this:

<div class="jumbotron header-font col-xs-6 col-xs-offset-3" style="background-color: green">

That pushes the content over 3 columns to center it, that's for the first row. You should play around with that if you want to see how it affects your page.

You can also add that to the first col-xs-3 div in the next row, and it will push that content over, too. I didn't really check to see what the responsive behavior would be for that, but you can examine that, too. It might be that you would want to bump up to "sm" classes, and have the "xs" size go to the full width?

Emily Sperry
@sperrye
Oct 25 2016 03:55
I was able to center it. But now the row with the image has a funky indent on the left. Any idea why? http://codepen.io/sperrye/pen/jrXJkw

12 columns is how wide the page is in it's entirety. It's stretchy.
If you create a div with col-sm-6, on screens designated 'small' or larger, the div will be half the size of the page.
Dil Mendonca
@dilmendonca
Oct 25 2016 04:32
I see
Emily Sperry
@sperrye
Oct 25 2016 04:34
You can also use two sizes (or three or four) at a time so that your columns change based on the screen size. So if you use <div class="col-xs-12 col-sm-6"> your columns will stack one on top of the other on extra small screens, but if the screen is 'small' or larger, they'll be side by side.

$.ajax({

@whiz25 It looks good so far. If you want to use an API then you don't need that array of quotes. If you don't want to use the API then you will need to add quotes to your array.

As a web dev as an employer your only limited to the task that your assigned to, i belive theres much more to achieve then a simple task and still having the worry of being fired from the job
But Nitin im going to try to create soming thing of my own which is related to ecommerce and help the citizens of india
But i have a LONG way to go as you can tell haha

Yeah ive been told by one of the smartest people of my town that I could be a IIT student and I have been basically raised in america and want to gain a css degree, but i got into web dev to help assist in covering my college fees
so since you guys seem experienced, do u think its possible ?
also I learned calculus in 7 day :) which is what blew his pants off

@jdtdesigns I've been around coding since 2014, took a CSS class in a community college and got a 98 mainly basing around visual basic and simply touched HTML and CSS, but I've got a basic knowledge around Java and C+ (object oriented languages) also am familiar with game dev tool such as Unreal engine and Unity

@MangoKing-IV interested in website game development?
JD Tadlock
@jdtdesigns
Oct 25 2016 16:47
@MangoKing-IV Don't apply for web dev then. Apply for C+ junior or junior game dev. You'll need a portfolio showing off a few projects you completed. It's not as easy as it seems to land a job. You'll need to be ready to be tested, probably pretty intensely for a game dev job.

So much stress in the tech field ! :)

Oct 25 2016 16:54
@MangoKing-IV You have to start somewhere. And you'll learn, it's not as easy as just saying i want this or that. Start applying and make sure you have a portfolio.

I've commented the issue in question
Nitin Chandran Nair
@NitinNair89
Oct 25 2016 17:39
it is .getJSON() method @AndroidWargames
not .get()
I am not sure if you can hit any server URL. You need an API for Quotes
hitting WordPress url will not work
You can get many free APIs for random quotes on the Internet. Just follow their API docs and guidelines on how to access their API and handle their API response. :)
AndroidWargames
@AndroidWargames
Oct 25 2016 17:41
I was looking at the documentation from https://api.jquery.com/jquery.get/
shouldn't that allow me to get a response from any website?

I don't see what you mean? I just want to read resources that are available through a browser like a .txt file
Nitin Chandran Nair
@NitinNair89
Oct 25 2016 17:43
it does not work that way @AndroidWargames
if you want to read 'resources' from a website, you have to use that website's API or service
else anybody would be able to "hit" any server and leak any kind of data, right?
@AndroidWargames Try this - https://quotesondesign.com/api-v4-0/ for your Quotes Machine
AndroidWargames
@AndroidWargames
Oct 25 2016 17:49
I'll work with that, but I've used other programming languages to, say, get an html response given a url. I'm not talking about accessing content that would otherwise only be available via an API
is there no similar capability using jQuery/javascript?
Nitin Chandran Nair

@mhdavis Update your JS as below:
```function getWeather () {
$.getJSON('your_url_here', function(data){
console.log(data); // data has the actual response from the server
showWeather(data); //pass the data to the showWeather function as a parameter.
});
/ .done(showWeather())
.fail(function (err, statusText, errorThrown) {
console.log(statusText + ': ' +err.status);
});
/
}
function showWeather(data) {
// your rest of the operations go here
}
```

function getWeather () {
$.getJSON('your_url_here', function(data){
console.log(data); // data has the actual response from the server
showWeather(data); //pass the data to the showWeather function as a parameter.
});
/ .done(showWeather())
.fail(function (err, statusText, errorThrown) {
console.log(statusText + ': ' +err.status);
});/
}
function showWeather(data) {
// your rest of the operations go here
}
@mhdavis
comment out the entire part:
    .done(showWeather())
    .fail(function (err, statusText, errorThrown) {
      console.log(statusText + ': ' +err.status);
  });
no need of these.

@atharvajava I got rid of your image margins and added float:left. But as you did not want that, have you tried it with the grid?

Michael Davis
@mhdavis
Oct 25 2016 18:17
@NitinNair89 so I have a question, im a little confused by the fact that you pass a function as an argument to the $.getJSON. so the method uses the link then pulls data from the link, which then gets passed as an argument for the function?
function getWeather () {
  $.getJSON('https://api.wunderground.com/api/32057b04a951d90e/conditions/q/autoip.json', function(data) {
    console.log(data);
    showWeather(data);

@drdextar The tribute challenge? Challenge only asks you to create a website. It does not matter about the content at all :) They want you to be able to create a website 'by just looking at the visual example'

Nitin Chandran Nair
@NitinNair89
Oct 25 2016 19:49
lists does not look good when centered, trust me.
have you tried adding a <div> around the <ul> with classes "col-md-12" and "col-lg-12"?
plemanski
@plemanski
Oct 25 2016 19:53
I think i tried a variation. Let me go play around with the columns a little
That doesn't seem to change anything, but I very well could have made a mistake
It did seem to pull my last paragraph up into the other div which I think means I forgot to close one of my div tags
Nitin Chandran Nair
@NitinNair89
Oct 25 2016 19:55
do you just want the list content to be centered or the whole list? See the centered list appearance by adding "class="text-center" to <ul>
or you can do it via the margin trick. Wrap a <div> around the <ul> and give it an ID or class. Then in your css, select that <div>:
```
yourID / .yourClass{
on chrome console, you can activate the responsiveness test, it will give you almost all of the resolutions. So use it to test your code
Anyone know how to continuously play a sound on mouse down?
Without it just looping, I need it to continuously play a tone for Simon. Instead of just playing the sound over and over again
Maksim Kulichenko
@makstheimba
Oct 25 2016 20:51
@Dirtier if you want it to play in a loop like it does in example simon game then you have to use web audio api
Evan W
@Dirtier
Oct 25 2016 20:51
Yea that's what I was using
I set it to loop but then it just plays the tone over and over
rather than one continuos tone
Maksim Kulichenko
@makstheimba
Oct 25 2016 20:52
@Dirtier I cant help then. I used native html5 audio, and also wanted it to loop endlessly, but could not do it and decided not to dive into web audio api
Sorin Ruse
@sorinr
Oct 25 2016 20:54
@Dirtier probably coz that audio has more tones in it not just lets say the "la' so when you loop it will be "lalala" as the same tone :) hope you got what i mean
hi guys, i am working on the tribute page and I was wondering what is meant by "use whatever library you want"
probably a dumb question, but are there already custom "libraries / templates" for bootstrap?
@jchan30 link the challenge ? just going to assume that you have the option to use another css library like bootstrap. materialize being an example
Does anyone know anything about the wikipedia viewer challenge?
Are there issues with the twitch.tv challenge? I can load my code and it executes ok (it is still in development) so I save it offline. When I reload it, nothing works. I'm using the hyperdev server and it seem a little erratic. Anyone else having issues?
