Yeah. I really don't recommend that API if you aren't too far in
Np
There are nine groups, which makes it more managable :smile:
You can use a switch on json.weather[0].id to change your image / background
oh wait, wrong API, my bad
Michael Davis
@mhdavis
Oct 26 2016 01:35
That is a lot more manageable, but I'm gonna see if I can maybe figure out a way to make this wunderground work since I'm kinda of far into using the API

Allan Pooley
@AllanPooley
Oct 26 2016 01:36
@skfwnelf Frank, what about your code? what does it output at the moment?
@skfwnelf But, I mean it looks right, providing you can perform unicode shifts like that, I ended up doing the following:
String.fromCharCode(strArr[i].charCodeAt() - 26 + CIPHER_SHIFT)
@skfwnelf Oh, and you also have to exclude operations on blank spaces " " - only shift letters
Tony Miri
@TonyMiri
Oct 26 2016 01:40

you just posted this lol str=String.fromCharCode(strArr[i].charCodeAt() - 26 + CIPHER_SHIFT);
@skfwnelf It's really basic. It will make you think you need to do something crazy, but you really don't for that challenge.
JD Tadlock
@jdtdesigns
Oct 26 2016 02:55
You need to loop through the string and if the character is not a letter, leave it. If the letter.charCodeAt() is greater than 77, you return a String.fromCharCode(letter.charCodeAt() - 13) else return a String.fromCharCode(letter.charCodeAt() + 13).
@skfwnelf
you can use a simple regex to match non letter characters

@skfwnelf Hey Frank. I think you have to first convert the character / string to unicode before performing your shift.

You can get the unicode value of any character (a letter in the string) using the charCodeAt() method.

You can then convert a unicode value back into a string by using: String.fromCharCode(<unicode value>)

@dotkoven yes
Michael Karpinski
@karpimpski
Oct 26 2016 05:07
@dotkoven don't feel any pressure to do it on your own, because Bootstrap is great when you're learning, but you'll need to learn how to design without Bootstrap at some point. if you feel comfortable, it's better to learn sooner than later. Bootstrap can be very limiting and it's better to know how to do what Bootstrap does yourself
Jason Nguyen
@dotkoven

Oct 26 2016 05:45
@dotkoven if you feel comfortable with CSS I'd say you should not use bootstrap. but if you're a bit less comfortable I would use Bootstrap and get a basic understanding of how that works and then try to make webpages without it

@kat-mag Loading animation is based on having all of the images preloaded and the percentage of both of the initial videos downloaded. I'll probably just change the percentage to 10% rather than 30% on the videos.

It's tricky though, too little and you get a broken experience. Too much and the loader takes too long.

@electrostaticfleece Yup. You can also try to render something meaningful first, and then lazy load the rest of the assets as user is busy on the first 'page' of your site.
because if it loads all at once on a clean prefix - it takes ages

Can someone help me with Jquery?
var address;
$.get("http://ipinfo.io", function(response) {
address = response.ip;
console.log(address);
}, "json");
Why is it that if I put the console.log outside of get I get undefined?
And how do I save response.ip to the address globall?
Markus Kiili
@Masd925
Oct 26 2016 10:15
@TasmaniaKrama That is because the get callback function runs later when the response comes. That is after the console.log outside the get runs.
That $.get... only binds the function to the ajax call. It doesn't run it.
TasmaniaKrama
@TasmaniaKrama
Oct 26 2016 10:16
How would I save the response.ip so I can use it later when needed?
Markus Kiili
@Masd925

@TasmaniaKrama You can use such variable, but only inside the callback you know that the response has come.
TasmaniaKrama
@TasmaniaKrama
Oct 26 2016 10:17
@Masd925 I am going to build the weather app but I don't want to use the location thing that asks you for permission. So I was thinking of using this approach.
@Masd925 So are you saying that now I have to write my whole JS script inside the $.get just because I can't get the ip out?
Markus Kiili
@Masd925
Oct 26 2016 10:23
@TasmaniaKrama An option is to call some function from the get callback. You could also pass the ip there instead of using the variable.

@Tomididak because even though the divs before your background image have their gutters causing that gap
@Tomididak since you got position: fixed all over the place, you have to set your background image div to also be position: fixed AND in the HTML place it before the other divs so it remains on the background.

I am having some performance problems with the weather app
Right now, I have it so that once the user press the button, the weather will be displayed. As of now, I am only updating the city and the country
but the response is so slow
it takes a few seconds for the JSON data to be fetched and updated

I have quick question. How can I have text on the same line but give the text different properties? For example, I have a quote going under an image and want to have the quote be one size and color and the person who made the quote be a different size and color.

for the portfolio site, does it have to be functionally identical? I built one and am hosting it on my own, but I don't know if it's applicable since it's a pretty different format

@j1417 your class is different than your title: you have a typo in your markup!
@j1417 also it looks like you assign the title to an id "ptitle" with your <a> tag, but in your css you refer to it as ".title", so you may want to straighten it out on one side or the other

@Sneak8288 wrap it in a <span> and use a class name. this keeps the text inline as opposed to using a <div>

@j1417 if you want to keep the id "ptitle" (which I can assume means page title), you'll want to use the ID selector in your css! #ptitle{}

@j1417 ah, I see what you're trying to do. In this case, you use #title2 to refer to the .title class on the same line. IDs will always have more precedence than classes, and you haven't defined any styles for #title2

@j1417 I would probably suggest simplifying your markup! Some of your selectors for your HTML don't look like they have styles in your CSS file, and others are somewhat tripping over others.

yes, but the link shoud be to that image only, then the code will pick it up the image by it self , for example

now run it in your ide it will pick up the image
