Howdy everyone, good day / afternoon / evening. Was wondering if anyone can help me with some CSS issues.

So I'm working on the Wikipedia Viewer project and when I populate a div with articles I get back from the API, they seem to overpopulate the div.

The elements go outside the bounds, they do not fit onto the webpage.
you can see this, trying with the search term "science"
blob
Any ideas on why this might be happening or how to fix it?
Note when I limit the search to 3 results, this doesn't happen, they fit on the page.

Ah... I think it's because it is absolute centering...
Anyone know still how to have the page expand to account for this?

Here is my tribute page. The issue I'm having is how it appears on mobile. However even on desktop I can't fine a way to center the list. Not the text itself but I can't get it centered under the image. I'm not quite sure what I need to do. http://codepen.io/Sneak8288/pen/ozOyQB
I added padding and on desktop it looks correct but for mobile the bullet points are outside the border

@AllanPooley
Oct 27 2016 01:38
@OzairAshfaque Looks good mate. The only thing I would suggest is maybe some padding below your About and Portfolio. Also, maybe using more clean font colours, but that is more of a personal preference.
@Sneak8288 Hey Ryan you can get your list like this...
blob
Allan Pooley
@AllanPooley
Oct 27 2016 01:43
Firstly... the div needs to be changed to <div class="col-md-12">
It was set to 11, which was offsetting it by 1/12th of the page
for the bullet points centered you can use:
list-style-position: inside;
(Inside of your ul css declaration)

and the center the text, you can change:

<ul class="text-left">
to

<ul class="text-center">

Sorry, I answered that for the text too.
All you need is <div class="col-md-12">
@Sneak8288
And for mobile, you can try adding some bootstrap grid settings for smaller devices
These are col-s- and col-xs-

So you might have a grid declaration that looks like this:

<div class="col-md-6 col-s-12 col-xs-12">

Whereby the above translates to a div that takes up half the width of the screen when it is a desktop, and the full width when it is a mobile.

Was hoping you guys can test it out and see if the location is correct for you? And if not any suggestions on how to make more accurate?

@Joshuaswift - the location is fine for me. Your Fahrenheit to Celsius conversion is not working? maybe you're not quite there. But the ipinfo site could result in some inaccuracy in the location, as it is based on the internet host IP address or something that is not necessarily closely related to your location...

Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Oct 27 2016 03:31
@Joshuaswift - I don't know if they have changed the write-up for this project, but the technologies that were available at one time certainly have changed, most notable Chrome disallowing the use of the geolocation unless you are using https, which, of course, doesn't work for the free weather sites. I think that the focus should be to use the best location technique that you can get, which might still be firefox and geolocation, but if someone is using Chrome, you don't have an option to use that - maybe then fallback to the ip location? The basic idea should be being able to interact with the weather site to do what they want - display weather for a location, preferably close to where you are... :)

Hey guys , just wondering if anyone has the time or inclination to give me some guidance on my "portfolio" page . I've been stuck on it for almost a week , have taken an intro to HTML class, all to no avail. Not sure what that says about me, considering its supposedly a basic project but at least I'm learning some things.....Anyhow please let me know if you have a few minutes to look into this, details to follow just in case anyone can help. Thanks!
So this is the page I am to reverse engineer , you will note the 2nd "page" (section?) is called portfolio. I have no idea how to line placeholders/images up like that. This is my attempt https://codepen.io/Raghav82/pen/XjYXZE which I will likely scrap

@jdtdesigns That definitely makes sense! I just struck me because this is only the second project and many people seem to be able to nail it quickly. But you are right , it is a long process and the end goal is not to create a half-baked page or get through challenges but learn how to be a well-rounded, creative and experienced coder. Appreciate the reminder thoug!
I'm just surpised that this is the second project any resources or open classes you would reccomend? I just took UMich Intro to HTML , it was helpful as far as my general understanding

Awesome I'll definitely check it out and really appreciate you pointing out some basic structural errors. the loading time is ok now, but as he said the animation does not finish in that time, so all you have to do is speed it up, and thats it @electrostaticfleece
so loading time ok, animation time slow
I bet thats a simple fix for you
Allan Pooley

@johnjullies Hey John, it looks like this might be the first time encountering callback functions. I would advise setting your HTML element from within your callback function (the function nested in your .getJSON())
What is happening is that the code inside of your .getJSON is not executing until after the rest of your code (synchronous) has finished.

since .getJSON() might take a while to return a value, it is interpretted as asynchronous.

This makes sense right? It has to send a request a request to a server, then wait for a response, so it would be super inefficient for the rest of the code to wait until it gets a value.

Allan Pooley
@AllanPooley
Oct 27 2016 07:18

@johnjullies Anyway, that might be a lot to take in - but it's worth investing the time because you'll also need it for the next two challenges.

The simple fix is that you need to insert something like this into the function in getJSON():
document.getElementById("#my-quote-element").textContent = json.quote.quoteText;

John Jullies Palma
@johnjullies
Oct 27 2016 07:18
yeah I kind of get what was happening when I inspected it on the console and noticed the differences in readyState. Yeah this is my first time encountering this
I got it working now. Code's dirty but it works! lol

Hey @c0d0er , Sorry I don't know why Twitch seems slower or flashier - maybe it is the Twitcher API.

I was going to ask you how you were finding the project? I read on the forums a lot of people having issues with the API and codepen? The example app doesn't appear to be working either.

But your project seems to be working! So it is possible to complete this project?

@christie91959 First pick a Person you want to describe; Then think about how you want your page would look like; You will use html (easiest way is to build it with bootstrap - divide page into 3; right side, middle and left; with using only middle for content) and css. Then u paste content from wikipedia.

guess its a problem with getting geo location from some browsers using the way they used in the freecodecamp exercise
Sorin Ruse
@sorinr
Oct 27 2016 12:46
@skfwnelf the path of the img is relative to the root of the file calling it. for simplicity, lets say your index.html file residing in the root of your website needs to load an img that can be found in a subdirectory called images(or media, whatever), so your bg url will be background-image: url("images/mylogo.jpg")
kirbyedy
@kirbyedy
Oct 27 2016 12:47
@Hveden you will get the location if you start your codepen with https://
but then you will get a mixed content problem, because the api you use is on http://
Miczysko
@Miczysko

@kirbyedy @Hveden then you can use https://crossorigin.me
just add before api's url like this

Hmm in the "negative margin challenge" I was trying to understand why a padding of 10px offsets a negative margin of 15px. I thin the default border is 5px so -15px (margin) + 5px(border) = 10 px. padding. So it offsets it. Is my understanding correct.

you also put evrething that goes into head section to settings html tag, and as i can see you give padding 450 px so its always 450 px Try to fix that with em units

@TheGr8Lemmoncawl some API only needs the 'base' URL (like the one you used before) and some API need extra details. So for Forismatic, along with the base URL, they need few more parameters from the caller to ensure the service (here quotes) is provided correctly. :)

http://codepen.io/sperrye/full/bwkkAb/ I'd like to have a gutter between the works and appearances columns, and also beneath the quote. How do I achieve this? It seems the image does it automatically...
It's also automatically spacing the more info div from the appearances and works above it. So, some space around the white boxes

I figured out how to do it with padding and margin, but now the row with the two lists in it isn't centered, because I had to change their widths from 6 to 5 grid squares to allow the space for said padding.

@TheMightyPingu errors? just round up what you display. Not the value you calculate. The rest is kinda normal, and you won't get exact values anyways. You wouldn't even notice the difference unless you're doing some crazy math stuff that needs the my-life-depends-on-it-precision.

'detect idle js' would give birth to some results for sure ;d
then you would just trigger an event with your wallpaper or whatever.

I'm working on the portfolio project. I have a few lines of text at each location on the page, but since I've added the form at the bottom it's the only thing that shows up. I tried adding a couple divs at the end after the form to see if they'd show, but they don't. ???? http://codepen.io/sperrye/pen/RGmoYV

http://codepen.io/jahnellybean/pen/rrbxPA the "My Work" preview section is off-centered. i want to center it with there are 2 images in a row but they seem to shift left. however, if i remove the margin in my css for each image (work1-4) then its centered. but i want the space between each image

Oct 27 2016 22:39
@jahnellybean ok...the quickest fix (but not necessarily the best) would be to add margin-left to work1 and work3. you can add this after your existing margins

Hello. I am running into some trouble with my tic-tac-toe game, in particular the functions checkPlayerVictory and checkComputerVictory... I have copied the code for checkPlayerVictory below and posted a link to the pen as well. For some reason, these functions are not doing what they are "supposed" to do and the application as a whole is very buggy. Hoping to start with the code below. Please, if you can help, help me figure out what the heck is going wrong with this ...
 function checkPlayerVictory() {
    $("#test6").html("checkPlayerVictory Initiated");
    for (i=0; i < winCombos.length; i++) {
        var ticTacToe = [];
        var tic = winCombos[i][0];
        var tac = winCombos[i][1];
        var toe = winCombos[i][2];
        if (playerOne.indeOf(tic) !== -1) {
          ticTacToe.push("tic");
        }
        if (playerOne.indeOf(tac) !== -1) {
          ticTacToe.push("tac");
        }
        if (playerOne.indeOf(toe) !== -1) {
          ticTacToe.push("toe");
        }
        if (ticTacToe.length == 3) {
          playerOneScore += 1;
          winner = "Player1";
          $("#test7").html(playerOneScore);
          $("#1").html("Y");
          $("#2").html("O");
          $("#3").html("U");
          $("#4").html("-");
          $("#5").html("-");
          $("#6").html("-");
          $("#7").html("W");
          $("#8").html("I");
          $("#9").html("N");
          break;
        }
      }
    if (winner == "Player1") {
        setTimeout (startGame, 3000);
      }
    if (winner !== "Player1") {
      cpuTurn();
    }
  }
