Alright. I've got another brain-buster here.
I'm using the Wikipedia API to get a random page. When it sends me back the JSON data, it does it in a way that the information I need is nested inside a page ID#. Since this page ID# is random every time, I'm wondering how I can access the data from that random key without knowing exactly what it's going to be?
Walid Ashri
@walidashri
Nov 01 2016 01:20
@FatTone225 link the call to the random page directly

@walidashri I can't seem to get this to work. I could link a button to go there directly, but I am trying to get the JSON data so I can populate an entry on my page first. I can't use the link to the random page in the json call because it doesn't link to the api.
Walid Ashri
@walidashri
Nov 01 2016 02:01
@FatTone225 the random page is direct link as I remember
what u want to do with it instead of direct link
When you do a search the entries populate on my page.
I'd like the random page to do the same. You can click each one to take you through to the wikipedia page.
Walid Ashri
@walidashri
Nov 01 2016 02:06
ok in this case u need to make the randomization ur self
i.e create a random search in wiki pages :)

@walidashri

@FatTone225 tell me Please
Tony Miri
@TonyMiri
Nov 01 2016 02:13
Well, I'm sort of cheating, but I guess not lol. I'm looking at another person's pen. He ran into the same problem that I did with the randomization of the page ID#. It looks like it is actually possible to access that key-value pair as if it were an array
I've got to look up exactly how it works, but this is the crucial bit.
var pID = Object.keys(data.query.pages)[0]
everything in those parentheses is the same in the JSON every time the api is called
The 0 is a random ID number
I was unaware that you can use that kind of notation in a JSON object
Walid Ashri
@walidashri
Nov 01 2016 02:17
so now u do the search with user input and return a random page of that search?
Tony Miri
@TonyMiri
Nov 01 2016 02:18
Nope. When you hit the random button you do a separate API call with a totally different URL than what you would use with the search button.
Since they are different URLs the JSON comes back differently. The search JSON is much cleaner and more simple to work with. The random JSON is all jumbled because it isn't actually a function of the API but more of a 'round about way to get the info.
So no user input required. They just click the random button.
If you're looking at my pen and don't see a 'random' button you should refresh. lol
The Object.keys() method returns an array of a given object's own enumerable properties, in the same order as that provided by a for...in loop (the difference being that a for-in loop enumerates properties in the prototype chain as well).
Walid Ashri
@walidashri
Nov 01 2016 02:23
@FatTone225 ok show me after u finish
Tony Miri
@TonyMiri
Nov 01 2016 02:35
@walidashri Here's what it will look like. Last thing I have to do is figure out how to set the url for each random page so that it is clickable.

@FERMAT1991 - hey there - welcome to FreeCodeCamp!
@durgakiran - horizontal scroll bar because you have one really long string of letters that cannot be broken up anywhere - no whitespace characters, so the browser makes it a long string, and has to display a scroll bar so that you can read it on a screen that isn't wide enough.

        <li><a href="#about">Contact</a></li>
      </ul>

    </div><!--/.nav-collapse -->
  </div>
</div>
</div>

and if you dont use

<button type="button" class="navbar-toggle" data-toggle="collapse" data-target=".navbar-collapse">
      <span class="icon-bar"></span>
      <span class="icon-bar"></span>
      <span class="icon-bar"></span>

Although I have finished my portfolio; getting it to work on codepen is difficult. Has anyone have trouble with the way codepen handles their design. Do you develop in codepen or do you use an IDE. I prefer IDE; however I get really annoyed by implementing it on codepen. Are we allowed to use github instead? It has less restrictions. At this stage I do not want to by all kinds of extra's etc while developing. For now I am thinking about redoing the assignment because I don't want to spend hours getting it to work on codepen only, while it works in my browser. Maybe I just need to make it a much easier implementation. any suggestions?

Clyde Lobo

Nov 01 2016 15:57
@TasmaniaKrama you can also use [].prototype.slice.call
Abdulah Hamzic
@hamzicabdulah
Nov 01 2016 15:59
@TasmaniaKrama another way to do it is using the rest parameter (...). So, if you wanted to declare a function which accepts at least one argument, but can also accept any number of arguments, you would declare it like so:
function test(arr, ...arguments) {}. That would store the first argument that's passed in the function in the arr variable, and the rest of the arguments in the arguments variable, which is an array of all the other arguments passed to the function. :)

@sorinr I just put the height: 1200px there so it shows how the nav works. if it all fits one on page, the nav doesn't really do anything.

@sorinr got it. that way the section can grow vertically as components are added. Thanks for the tip.

Almost finished with my portfolio page. I have two issues that I cannot solve even after doing some reading and trying out some other bits:
1) The header, row, and column code allowed my name and the site nav to be at the same height on the page. When I do similar code for the "about" section (some text and a circle placeholder) and the footer, I cannot get the content to set beside each other.
2) My footer is not 100% wide. I made sure it's outside of the "main" <div>.
3) The color of my a.hover is not correct. Seems bootstrap overrides it but I read that using !important is not the way to go. I was able to overridden the a color so I don't understand why a.hover isn't overridden as well.
I'm a newb with newbie issues, sigh. Thanks for looking!

Thanks for looking! https://codepen.io/winterfive/pen/ZpPqYk

@winterfive you need 2 </div> before your footer to fix that :)
@winterfive to 3) select it with a:hover instead of .hover
Lee
@winterfive
Nov 01 2016 19:55
@laceyIrvin To remove the bullets, use list-style: none in your CSS for the list. To make a white box appear on hover, add this to your CSS: a:hover { background-color: #fff; } http://www.w3schools.com/css/default.asp is a good CSS reference, let's you play with the code.
@Otto-AA thank you! I get lost in all the <div>s. It's difficult to keep track of which are closed and which are not, and where they close.

@moT01 yes..but what is the difference between (nav li) and (this)??
Tyler Moeller
@TylerMoeller
Nov 01 2016 20:31
@j1417 nav li means select all <li> elements inside of <nav> elements. If you click on one of those, remove the class "active" from all of <li> elements inside <nav> and add the class "active" to the specific <li> element that was clicked.
this refers to the specific element that was clicked

@awb715 - I think that it is that .ime class, with the 40px margin. If you need that, just use margin-top, perhaps that is what you were going for? Also, is that supposed to be showing my location? It isn't close - maybe you are using IP location, which could explain it.
@gikwu1 - looks good so far.
