Hello! I'm having a hard time trying to find a way to use the Bootstrap grid system inside a well. Does anyone know if that's possible? Inside the same well, I'm trying to put a text and an image by the side.

I have two questions. I'm working on the tribute page.
First. Why does I am trying to list these items in the blue box, why does it keep appearing outside the container? And why does the widths go crazy when it turns to wide view?
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Nov 04 2016 02:11
@AndreComo =- your widths go crazy when going above the "md" viewport size because you have your columns set to col-md-1, i think that is causing it. It forces that content to a single column. You are also doing something strange with declaring those closing tags of </row> - there is no such thing. For your <div class="row">, there should eventually just be a closing </div> tag - you seem to be a litle confused about that? Your HTML structure is just a bit confused, as well as with how to use the row class and column classes.
Vinicius Costa
@viniciuscrw
Nov 04 2016 02:11
@AndreComo Andre, check your line 11. It seems that you closed your container div, so that may be a reason the otherm items appear outside...
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Nov 04 2016 02:15

@AndreComo - the basic structure for the row and column should look like this:

<div class="row>
    <div class="col-md-1">Wine Library</div>
    <div class="col-md-1">Wine Library</div>
    <div class="col-md-1">Wine Library</div>
    <div class="col-md-1">Wine Library</div>
    <div class="col-md-1">Wine Library</div>
    <div class="col-md-1">Wine Library</div>
</div>

etc. although a row should have columns totaling up to 12 units for any row at any width. But the general idea is that you nest one or more divs with columns classes inside of the parent "row" div.

Tony Miri
@TonyMiri
Nov 04 2016 03:45
@algenisromero did you try to access the data with something like data.content.innerHTML
@algenisromero I looked at mine. I used the same API that you are using. I saved the entire ajax call in a variable, and when I log that variable to the console it shows me the contents of the object rather than just the object.
Tony Miri
@TonyMiri
Nov 04 2016 03:52
@algenisromero Ah. Actually, what I did was I used the data from the API call to update my HTML, then I used the innerHTML from my HTML code that I just updated to populate the tweet text
That way I get the <p> tags in my dom to create the text, but I only get the innerHTML text to populate the tweet

@Danielnielsen1 - hello there. You should have a semicolon after your width: 100px; in your definition of the smaller-image class. And, as @drecurrency said, class="smaller-image", separated by spaces, as an attribute within your <img element.

is it bad to use !important? or it is ok to do so?
Tyler Moeller
@TylerMoeller
Nov 04 2016 17:28
@tcao2 It's best to avoid the use of !important in your CSS. If you are only seeing the underlines on hover, do:
a:hover {
  text-decoration: none;
}
Otherwise, you can use a more specific selector to avoid the use of !important, like:
.result-area a {
  text-decoration: none;
}
@tcao2 Also, use this URL so you don't need the cross origin proxy which is slow right now and goes down sometimes without notice: "https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=opensearch&callback=?&search="

Question: For the tribute page, in the intro video, he says it's an HTML only project... he didn't use any CSS. But I've seen other pages in the forums that are loaded with stuff not even taught yet. I was going to try to mimic the example (with a different person of course) but should I be using CSS too? I'm having a hard time figuring stuff out in bootstrap alone. Or am I just putting too much thought into it? I want to knock this out and move on.
What I meant to say was, having a hard time figuring out how to do everything JUST in bootstrap.
AsmodeusMictian
@AsmodeusMictian

Bootstrap is pretty damn powerful and useful, but even in my own tribute page I did use SOME custom CSS. YMMV though :D

Tyler Moeller
@TylerMoeller
Nov 04 2016 17:56
@bacarlino I think they recommend you try HTML only because once people start using CSS without knowing it too well, it can override bootstrap's default behavior and give unintended, confusing results. The example portfolio page has over 300 lines of CSS, so it's definitely okay to use if you are comfortable with it.

Tyler Moeller
@TylerMoeller
Nov 04 2016 18:36
@RJaycreative It takes some studying to get familiar with it. Familiarize yourself with the grid system for starters: http://getbootstrap.com/css/#grid
@brunomfonseca As a hint, you'll need to create a link and append the quote to the end of the URL, after ?text=:
https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text=The+Text+You+Want+To+Tweet

@waseem-lasker

img {
  display: block;
  margin: 0 auto;
}

You might also try the center-block class if using bootstrap, or wrap the image in a div and apply text-center

Tyler Moeller
@TylerMoeller
Nov 04 2016 19:08
@mhdavis It's very confusing documentation. The main thing to figure out is what URL to use. The rest will just be a getJSON call like you've done with previous APIs
So, even on pages where they refer to PHP, it's only the URL parameters that you need to be aware of
Michael Davis
@mhdavis
Nov 04 2016 19:09
@TylerMoeller the other problem I run into is I'm not sure what I'm getting out, although If I get the JSON and log it to the console I'm sure i can figure out what it gives me
@TylerMoeller I guess my main thing is getting the right URL honestly, and formatting the input from the user into a search query for the API
Tyler Moeller
@TylerMoeller
Nov 04 2016 19:10
@mhdavis The sandbox is meant to help with this. I think I spent a few hours playing with this and looking up each different property that can be set: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:ApiSandbox
@mhdavis Also, if you just want a basic query, OpenSearch will be the easiest way to go: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/API:Opensearch
Michael Davis
@mhdavis
Nov 04 2016 19:12
So I'm a little confused, the project basically wants you to have a user input something and then return the results for that search right?
Tyler Moeller
@TylerMoeller
Nov 04 2016 19:12
Yes
Michael Davis
@mhdavis
Nov 04 2016 19:13
i'm not picking up on some of the finer nuances that are involved with searching for a term if there are any?
Tyler Moeller
@TylerMoeller
Nov 04 2016 19:13
Once you get your URL, it will have a search= paramater on it. You'll take what the user has entered in the input box, append it to the URL, and then make a getJSON call to that URL where you can get JSON back to parse and display on the page.
jQuery .val() will be useful for getting the input from the user: http://api.jquery.com/val/
Michael Davis
@mhdavis
Nov 04 2016 19:26
@TylerMoeller okay I think i get the jQuery.val()
function search() {
  var searchValue;
  $('.search').click(function () {
    searchValue = $('.searchBox').val();
  });
  return searchValue;
}
that's what I made for the function, after a first go
now to figure out the API bits
@TylerMoeller oh lol you sent me a search query for javascript
that's really weird how they have the results formatted for a query

Can someone explain how I use an array as arguments when calling a function? I am trying to solve this code but can't figure it out. It should return a string based on what's in the arguments.
var arr = ["Hello", "Bob", "!"];
var fn = function(greeting, name, punctuation) {
    return greeting + ', ' + name + (punctuation || '!');
}

function argsArray(func, arg) {

}

argsArray(fn,arr);
Abdulah Hamzic
@hamzicabdulah
Nov 04 2016 20:06
@KingHippo In your case, you won't need to define another function named argsArray
you can just call the fn function using the apply method
fn.apply(null, arr);
the apply method here is used to split an array into arguments
it takes the arr array and uses its items as arguments to pass to the fn function

Nov 04 2016 20:40
@hamzicabdulah I am still working with functions and arguments.
I am currently trying to add agruments against each other. a+b+c
but each call has a different number of arguments like so
function doStuff(){
    // add each argument against each other
  // return argument if only one present
    for(let i of arguments) {
  console.log(i);
      return i + i;
  }
}

doStuff(1);
doStuff(1, 2);
doStuff(1, 2, 3);
doStuff(1, 2, 3, 4);
Abdulah Hamzic
@hamzicabdulah
Nov 04 2016 20:46
@KingHippo ok, what you can do here is declare a variable count = 0 and then when looping over the arguments, you just add i to count, like so count += i
and then, at the end of the doStuff function, you just log the value of count to the console
you also need to remove the return statement, because it breaks out of the function after the first iteration
so, you can try that

var timer=setInterval(call(i),1000);
function call(x){
    x--;
    console.log(x)
    if(x===0){clearInterval(timer);}
}
Don Price
@KingHippo
Nov 04 2016 20:54
@hamzicabdulah for some reason the for(let isn't starting at index 0.I think I will give reduce a try
Abdulah Hamzic
@hamzicabdulah
Nov 04 2016 20:56
function doStuff() {
    return Array.from(arguments).reduce(function (x, y) {
      return x + y;
    });
}
here's how you'd do it with reduce
function doStuff() {
    count = 0;
    for(let i of arguments) {
      count += i;
    }
    return count;
}
and here's the other way I mentioned previously
you'll need to look into that way of solving it with reduce
let me know if something looks unclear

@tlheille are you referring to the background image staying fixed? if that's what you're referring to, it kinda does work for me
just wondering, why wouldn't you use background: fixed?

@hamzicabdulah Sorry, I should have been more specific. I used CSS and position panels along the Z axis to achieve the parallax scrolling
I’m wanting to smooth scroll to different anchors when a link is clicked
I’ve been tinkering with it since I posted my request though

Does anyone know why my user <div>s aren't the full width of the container? You can see what I mean by hovering over each user. http://codepen.io/TonyMiri/pen/yamwVR

@FatTone225 I think your user <div>s aren't the full width of the container, because the col-xs-4 grid has padding-right: 15px; padding-left: 15px; default.

@FatTone225 Nest rows in that column to avoid it, on line 20 of your JS add the class row for each streamer:
        $('.user').append('<div id="streamer" class="row">' + logo + name + status + '</div>');

@Dueldrawer8 Add jQuery to your codepen settings - make sure it is listed above bootstrap.min.js - jQuery needs to load first.
You can use your browser's developer tools console to see the error next time:
bootstrap.min.js:6 Uncaught Error: Bootstrap's JavaScript requires jQuery(…)

Hello everyone. I’m working on a guessing game. I want the prompt to accept the text the user writes in and compare it to the random generated color in the array shuffly. Can anyone figure out where I’m messing up with my code?

@owaaquino
hello
just a quick question regarding the code below

var editItem = function(){
    var listItem = this.parentNode;
    var label = listItem.querySelector("label");
    var inputText = listItem.querySelector("input[type=text]");
    var checkbox = listItem.querySelector("input[type=checkbox]");
    var saveBtn = listItem.querySelector("button.edit");
    var canceBtn = listItem.querySelector("button.cancel");

    var containsClass = listItem.classList.contains("editMode");

    if (containsClass) {
        label.innerHTML = inputText.value;
        checkbox.setAttribute("disabled", "disabled");
    } else{
        inputText.value = label.innerHTML;
    }

    listItem.classList.toggle("editMode");

    canceBtn.onclick = cancelAction;
}

Im trying to disable the "checkbox" when I click the edit button. But what happen is the checkbox becomes disabled when I clicked edit button again.
if you see. the checkbox should only become disabled when a class "editMode" is added to a certain element.
but in my case once I removed the "editMode" class the checkbox becomes disabled

@djangoearnhardt So in this code
function checkGuess () {
  if (isNaN(guessInput)) {
    alert("I don't recognize!\n\nPlease enter a color from the list");
    return false;
  }
You're saying if guessInput is not a number, alert that you dont recognize the input

Currently working on the Simon Game in CodePen. It works fine, but after pushing some of the buttons I get a warning in the console that says that an infinite loop occurred on line 0. Should I ignore this or should I try to find out why it's happening?

A link to the project is here

Looking into presenting the "combination" for the Simon Game, and right now all I can imagine is looping through the combo, changing the color of the button for 1 second (so it looks pressed), playing its respective noise, and then changing it back to its original color. Is there an easier way to implement this?

@ryanapolinar That's what I did. It shouldn't be too complex, especially since you can set timeouts within timeouts or intervals.
