Hey guys, I'm trying to familiarize myself with the Twitch API:
$.ajax({
        url: "https://wind-bow.hyperdev.space/twitch-api/streams/freecodecamp?callback=?",
        type: "GET",
        accept: "application/vnd.twitchtv.v3+json",
        client_id: "nooxsx0ioqik6mzlfimkqzc13pr1hg2",
        success: function(response) {
            $("body").html(response);
        }
    });
but I can't get anything

plemanski
@plemanski
Nov 15 2016 00:59
@kat-mag when you are at that stage of the map you really don't have enough knowledge to try much different. Yeah you can use some templates but does that really help you learn that much?
The portfolio project afterwards is a better start to trying to mess around with design
kat-mag
@kat-mag
Nov 15 2016 01:00
@plemanski Yeah, but the issue is they're forcing people to use bootstrap, when they have no idea what classes & ids are. That just makes it a mess. If they played around a bit with pure css, they'd be able to do something better.
Tom
@moT01
Nov 15 2016 01:02
@kat-mag lets see it
plemanski
@plemanski
Nov 15 2016 01:02
I'm pretty sure it goes over classes and ids in the lessons leading up to it. They could do something better but when you don't have many tools at your disposal (aka a lack of knowledge) it is hard to create anything responsive. I think starting people with bootstrap isn't necessarily a bad idea.
I would like to see someone create something using only the css and html taught leading up to that project
kat-mag
@kat-mag
Nov 15 2016 01:04
@plemanski no dice. Because clearly there's not enough info in the lessons. That's why it's called a project... U do your research & u work it out.
Knowing bootstrap is a good thing, but it's not necessarily the best idea to start with that
plemanski
@plemanski
Nov 15 2016 01:11
True but for many people it is their first page and they have no idea where to start. Dicking around with bootstrap is a good way to have a general direction to start searching. Again it is a good stepping stone and then people can get a little more creative when it comes to their portfolio. Most people that I have seen showing different designs for the tribute page end up just copying some template and that is even worse than trying to figure out how to modify bootstrap
Tom
@moT01
Nov 15 2016 01:14
my tribute probly looked worse
granted i made in like a half hour
we all learn some how, and start some where, it feels like you're in the kindergarten classroom talking trash to the kids for not being able to add 2+2
kat-mag
@kat-mag
Nov 15 2016 01:22
I'm just expressing the disappointment. Because many people come here and actually show something cool. Or come and ask 'how' to do sth. I'm totally fine with explaining that. But if it's 0 effort & no 'you' in this - I bet you're not going to remember HOW you did this in the first place.

@awb715 - it looks like you are ending your <div class="row"></div> or at least your column divs are not getting nested inside your row div? At least that's what it looks like in the chrome devtools.

alright i'm gonna look that up right now
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Nov 15 2016 03:01
@Sarahjsts - in order to have this work, you also have to load your page with http:// and NOT https://- after opening the page that way, it appears to be successful accessing ip-api.com, but now you have another error - the variable weather is not defined. But you're probably just working on that...
Sarahjsts
@Sarahjsts
Nov 15 2016 03:03
oh yeah i was working on that part separate that's a whole other problem i'm having. I'm gonna try solving that one on my own first tho

@LordJocker
Nov 15 2016 03:07
With CSS maybe?
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Nov 15 2016 03:10
@Sarahjsts - you do not have a div or any element with id="data" looks like you are trying to use that. And then to get the temperature from the returned data, you can use this line: $("#data").html(json.main.temp); - you have to be referencing the returned JSON data, and that is in your callback function's argument json. From there, it's a matter of deciphering the construction of the JSON data and picking out the parts that you want.

here I made an example
of what I mean by a 12 column encapsulating a text-center element
text-center will center based on the parent element
so if you have a 12 column element with 100% width, it just auto centers it for you

Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Nov 15 2016 06:07
@HappyMeerkat - you just have some invalid CSS syntax there. And your CSS should be in the CSS panel on CodePen, but if you just put a right curly brace after your .black-text class definition, it might work, even if you have the CSS in your HTML panel?
HappyMeerkat

Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Nov 15 2016 06:08
@HappyMeerkat - yeah, that will do it. If you put your CSS in the CSS panel, then you can use the "Analyze CSS" in the dropdown on the right of that panel, and it will help you to find things like that. But a simple curly brace should get you going...

Hi guys. Newbie here. I am stuck in the FreeCodeCamp : Build a Personal Portfolio Webpage

I am trying to create the horizontal line divider that is there in https://codepen.io/FreeCodeCamp/full/YqLyXB/

The --------</>----------- one that appears below Portfolio and Contact but I am not able to replicate it. The horizontal line does not touches the end of the < sign.

Here is my pen:

It is yet to be completed.

@Golden-Dragon I think you should try to use <hr>
not strike
Golden-Dragon
@Golden-Dragon
Nov 15 2016 07:10

Yes but <hr> is giving a straight horizontal line. Here is the code that I have used

HTML:

<div class="strike"><span></></span></div>

CSS:
.strike {
width: 40%;
text-align: center;
border-bottom: 2px solid #000;
border-color: grey;
line-height: 0.1em;
margin: 10px 0 20px;
margin-left: 30%;
color: grey;
}

.strike span {
background: #fff;
padding: 0 3px;
margin-top: 0px;
font-weight: bold;
font-size: 20px;
}

I am pretty sure you can change the width of the <hr>

if you check the link in my portfolio you will see that the line is actually a <hr> element

i don't know which class to use for what purpose

@perceptron007 Bootstrap has many components and utilities so check documentation which have examples for each component. By seeing those examples you can understand how to use them. And same for JQuery. If you don't like reading documentation :wink: then there are lot of videos explaining how to use them. Udacity has some courses and you can even search in youtube for free resources

@Robertb4 Is there a reason you're parsing the return lat and long? IP based location is already going to give a not always accurate location, and by parsing it, you're further adjusting the location

Nov 15 2016 16:28
@Robertb4 You can use navigator.geolocation over HTTPS and then fallback to the less accurate IP-based location provided by ip-api.com. I don't think your weather API supports HTTPS though, so you may want to look into a service like Weather Underground, or just pop up a message when the user visits your page over HTTPS, telling them that HTTPS is not supported yet.
Jason Luboff
@JLuboff
Nov 15 2016 16:37
@Robertb4 As @TylerMoeller mentioned, your API most likely doesn't support HTTPS. You'd have to use a proxy like https://crossorigin.me to use it over https
Tyler Moeller
@TylerMoeller
Nov 15 2016 16:37
And crossorigin.me is laggy, slow, and goes down often. Plus you're passing personally identifiable information (location, IP Address, etc.) to an unknown man in the middle
Best to go all HTTPS or just do HTTP and give a warning if you can't support HTTPS with the APIs you've chosen

This might be more future-proof:

navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(success, error);

@MommaJava 'bout the code: you got some tags not closed properly. And you're doing everything by the pixel. Try doing it more responsive & use % or em. If you resize your window it goes crazy. And it'd be a shame to leave it like that, when you got it looking so nice on the full-window

Hi people! I am on the Intermediate "Front End Development Projects" section and am having trouble with the "Show the Local Weather" project. Specifically when I call the OpenWeatherMap API in my $http.get request it returns it fails and returns the error function argument of the .then attached to the $http.get. I made an account on OpenWeatherMap and use the my key for the url in my codepen and if i go to that url in browser I see that JSON object that i'm trying to get but it doesn't work when I call it in my pen. I called a different API in the same $http.get request in the same pen and it successfully returned so is it a problem with the OpenWeatherMap API or is it something else? @kat-mag I just googled an article and it says that if there is only one statement per line that it basically treats the new line white space as a semi colon. Doesn't that mean that if you have a simple var declaration or something that the semi colon is unnecessary and doesn't do anything? From what i read you only need semi colons to separate multiple statements on the same line. Is it best practice to have the semi colons anyway so programs can reduce the file size in to a min version or something?
kat-mag
@kat-mag
Nov 15 2016 18:38
@MP7373 javascript's parser will perform an ASI - automatic semicolon insertion - in case of a line break. But it is considered a bad design choice, and should generally be avoided. No production code that I've seen uses this 'feature' of ASI.
You need to understand one thing. ASI is an error correction service.
Meaning these are ERRORS & parser just cleans up the mess.

But what do you mean by half transparent? Like 50% opacity or just a border on the top/left and no border bottom/right?
kat-mag

or half of the line? what ;p

is this ok for a tribute page? https://codepen.io/HappyMeerkat/pen/GNqxBd/
as soon as it opens it seems like its too big? or is that because its on a small screen?
Jason Luboff
@JLuboff
Nov 15 2016 19:02
@HappyMeerkat I find the image to be a bit big
kat-mag
@kat-mag
Nov 15 2016 19:03
@HappyMeerkat yeah, bit too big
and you could make it more responsive, because it doesn't resize well at all. And your html tags are a mess ;p
But as a topic & all - it's ok for a tribute page.
(and you know - Harry Potter :heart: )

kat-mag

all the stuff in html that is enclosed in < > is called a tag. Div's are just boxes that organize the rest of them

Help please I'm trying to add the last thing to complete the weather app but it seems like i'm having trouble adding the celsius to fahrenheit. The onclick function doesn't work on anything but the body itself and if I add a button I ca't even click it. I guess it's related to elements overlapping.

Don't really get your code (that's bad). smK smV? Not really readable. Two for each loops nested aren't good as well. I'm lost
Oh, yup. About the colors, as @jdtdesigns said... Go for https://coolors.co/ @Robertb4
Btw. Javascript HAS a foreach loop. There's really no need to use a jquery one if you're not iterating over selectors.

@artoodeeto oh. But it's no border, mate
it's just a gradient on a div
that fades to top
the 'border' is the padding given to that div

I have been coding for a couple of months now and I have to say, I am hooked. I now know how to make a website and I have made a couple for some companies and organisations. I would not say I would be ready to get a job (I am not legally allowed to do so either), but I think it is time for me to work with other people that I can learn from and grow with.
I am tired of working and learning by myself and I want to create something with other web developers around the world. I have contacted some people but everybody dismisses what I have to say.

What should I do? Any advice? What would be the best platform to meet other people in a similiar situation to me?

Hello, I just finished the Validate US Telephone Numbers Task but I got the feeling my method is kind of a cheat I was just wondering if anyone here knows if this is terrible or if ok?
function telephoneCheck(str) {
  // Good luck!

  var arr = [
    /^\d{3}\s\d{3}s\d{4}/,
    /^\d{3}\-\d{3}\-\d{4}/,
    /^\(\d{3}\)\d{3}-\d{4}/,
    /^\(\d{3}\)\s\d{3}-\d{4}/,
    /^\d{3}\s\d{3}\s\d{4}/,
    /^1\s\d{3}\-\d{3}\-\d{4}/,
    /^1\s\(\d{3}\)\s\d{3}\-\d{4}/,
    /^1\(\d{3}\)\d{3}\-\d{4}/,
    /^\d{10,10}$/,
    /^1\s\d{3}\s\d{3}\s\d{4}/,
  ];

  for(var i = 0; i < arr.length; i++){
    if(str.match(arr[i])){
      return true;
    }
  }

  return false;
}

telephoneCheck("555-555-5555");

@Skretch but you're overthinking... I think :D
valid us number is what? 10 numbers? plus the area code that you need to verify? (no idea, just processing)
so first stripe the string off everything that's not a number ( /d). Then put a delimiter on length
Anders

@coymeetsworld i think he means the next three projects it is required so you will have to figure it out for those

@coymeetsworld learning to use more advanced API instead of starting up with a simple one.
quote apis are dead simple. Twitch api makes you want to kill yourself ;D
and the trouble of copying over the quotes to an array... god. I'd be too lazy.

@kat-mag idk I personally didn't like the wiki api, twitch was easier for me to deal with
but I get the point

this was before you learned API calls
so technically it could be done without learning JSON/AJAX
im not sure exactly why it was moved to later on if they didn't make those 2 a requirement
kat-mag
@kat-mag
Nov 15 2016 22:53
I'm not saying it can't be done this way

@AkivaMajowka This is one of your rows, it’s not using it correctly unfortunately <div class="row"> <div class="col-md-12">&nbsp;</div> <div class="col-md-4">&nbsp;</div> <div class="col-md-4">&nbsp;</div> <div class="col-md-4">&nbsp;</div> </div>
That adds up to 24 rows lol

right, I understand, its just that the quote generator is one of the first projects where you have to write JavaScript and deal with the Twitter API
that part is already a big jump, especially the Twitter API at least it was for me
so why not simplify the project?
theres going to be plenty of projects where you need to use AJAX and JSON, all of D3 projects required it
kat-mag
@kat-mag
Nov 15 2016 22:55
the sole fact of needing to deal with something outside your own code makes you think more. And since this job relies on thinking - no escape, you need to get good at it. And the sooner the better
Carl
@carlm7
Nov 15 2016 22:56
@AkivaMajowka You’ve also forgotten to close quite a few tags so that has broken it. I’m given you a simplified version to help you understand how it should look

@coymeetsworld yeah, well. Depends on how a person learns. If you like being thrown into the ditch without knowing anything about APIs & told to do Twitch project - that's fine. I wouldn't like that ;p

was Twitch really that bad for you @kat-mag ? lol, did you do Wiki before or after that?
I guess looking back at it the main problem I had was I didn't realize I needed to make more than one API call, where I believe the other projects you only needed to run 1

@AkivaMajowka It’s definitely a nesting issue, you’ve placed a div inside another div without closing the other one off and it’s causing the layout to break. Try removing some content and working with one liners for the time being, it makes understanding the code easier especially when you’re learning
I’m just working on something at the minute but I will look as soon as I can

it's supposed to indent your code more properly in codepen. It won't make it magically work or whatever ;D you just said it gets not-so-pretty in codepen
won't delete those extra spaces though.
Btw, you got 'match brackets' ticked on in your codepen profile settings? Would help you. Autocomplete is available as well.
