Hi, Can I please ask, in Build a Tribute Page assignment, why the paragraph in <blockquote> is in a different font size? Is it because the <p> is nested under Bootstrap's <jumbotron>?
(https://codepen.io/edgaryp/pen/NbRxQN?editors=1000)
John Michael Tubiera
@jmstubiera
Nov 16 2016 04:03
@edgaryp I would say yes, if you'll be inspecting the element, blockquote has a default font-size of 20px however, specificity wins as .jumbotron has specified the p element which has a font-size of 21px.

Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Nov 16 2016 04:36
@edgaryp - it looks like the styling for that particular sequence of element is set up to set the font-size: 21px and font-weight: 200; - the CSS selector is .jumbotron p, so it is for <p> element under the .jumbotron class.
Edgar Pan
@edgaryp
Nov 16 2016 05:00
@khaduch it starts making sense. But where did you find the CSS selector .jumbotron p as I could not see it from looking into the original source.
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Nov 16 2016 05:03
@edgaryp - I used the Chrome browser devtools to examine the elements in the HTML panel, and see the classes and CSS rules that are being applied. So you can see it there in a couple different ways, but that's where I saw it.
@edgaryp - I don't know if you'll be able to see it on the next image, but I took a screenshot of the devtools

@khaduch That is great, I can see your screen shot.
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Nov 16 2016 05:06
@moT01 - depends on what you are trying to show. If it is something that you can cut and paste, you can use the markdown code posting, for what I wanted to show, I couldn't just copy and paste it, so I screenshotted it and pasted that.
Tom
@moT01
Nov 16 2016 05:07
right so you dont need the ``
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Nov 16 2016 05:07
@moT01 - I"m using windows, so I just use the "Snipping Tool", and you can copy from there after you get the screenshot that you want, then just come to the chat window and paste. No backquotes needed, nor will they work in this case.
Tom
@moT01
Nov 16 2016 05:08
i didnt suggest the ticks
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Nov 16 2016 05:09
@edgaryp - the other place that you can see it is if you look at the "Computed" tab, and look for the font-size - you'll see the hierarchy of CSS rules that could be applied, maybe I'll screenshot that part. It's a little hard to see, but there are four different places where the font-size settings are made. The one that is selected is the one on top, the others are crossed out with a strikeout through the numbers. It also shows the CSS files where the various settings are specified...
blob
@moT01 - I know, but somebody did... I was just trying to clarify what I thought was being suggested.
khaduch @khaduch - taking off for the night..... good night and happy coding everyone!

Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Nov 16 2016 05:14

@edgaryp - you have to keep the basics in mind - I would say that that rule is the most specific with two selector values in it? But it's good to go deeper into it to learn what's happening...

I just use the control-V paste on windows to paste it - I guess there could be other complications, are you using Mac or Windows?

Edgar Pan
@edgaryp
Nov 16 2016 05:15
@khaduch Mac + Safari
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Nov 16 2016 05:16
@edgaryp - yeah, I don't know Mac stuff too well - there is a key sequence to take a screenshot and I don't remember what it was, I looked it up for someone once. I'm sure there are plenty of Mac folks here that would know.... for now, I'm outta here - good luck! ;)

command shift 3
windows copies it for immediate pastability i believe
mac saves to desktop
so you need to open and copy what you want
theres other ways to do it as well, command shift 4 allows you to drag your mouse to capture a part of the screen

Hello everyone! In this project I am using a JS function to add an auto-typing effect to a div, but I'm struggling to centralize it. Could someone take a look? http://codepen.io/tfuelber/pen/yVJbep

Guys, i have problem to extract data from openweather api :v
someone can help me?

function doIt() {
var output = $.ajax({
  //url: 'https://community-open-weather-map.p.mashape.com/weather?APPID=6bbcd2*****a&callback=test&lang=en&q=Bologna&units=%22metric%22',
    url: 'https://community-open-weather-map.p.mashape.com/weather?APPID=*******&callback=test&lang=<required>&q=Bologna&units=%22metric%22+or+%22imperial%22',
  type: 'GET', // The HTTP Method, can be GET POST PUT DELETE etc
  data: {}, // Additional parameters here
  dataType: 'json',
  success: function(data) {

    console.log(data);
      },
  error: function(err) { alert(err); },
  beforeSend: function(xhr) {
  xhr.setRequestHeader("X-Mashape-Authorization", 'AaZmucdndemshFo5qNcS****'); // Enter here your Mashape key
  }
});
The request work (cause in my browser i can see the result)...but if i go to console.log or alert some value i cant see the result :/

Hey y'all! I have this little bugger here:

<img src="http://abcn.ws/2eX59Em" class="center-block img-responsive img-thumbnail" alt="Steve Carell smiling and looking off." width="714" height:"610">

I'm trying to figure out how to put in text in the thumbnail, just like the codepen tribute page that FCC made as an example. Would I do that through direct jQuery, or can I do that in that same element?

Here's what I'm talking about: https://codepen.io/FreeCodeCamp/full/NNvBQW/
Under the thumbnail, it shows as text in the thumbnail, right under the picture.
( I don't wanna look at the source code)

Hey guys, I’m trying to create a navbar with flexbox and justify-content: space-between, but it’s not working and the links are stopping about halfway across the page, instead of going to the edge of the container. This is the relevant code:

<header class="navigation" role="banner">
        <div class="logo"><img src="/assets/img/logo.svg" onerror="this.src='/assets/img/logo.png'" alt="Logo"></div>
        <nav>
          <ul>
            <li><a href="#portfolio">Portfolio</a></li>
            <li><a href="#skills">Skills</a></li>
            <li><a href="#contact">Contact</a></li>
          </ul>
        </nav>
      </header>
.navigation {
  max-width: 1200px;
  margin-left: auto;
  margin-right: auto;
  padding-top: 75px;
  display: -webkit-box;
  display: -moz-box;

  -moz-align-items: center;
  -ms-align-items: center;

  align-items: center;
  -ms-flex-align: center; }
  .navigation::after {
    clear: both;
    content: "";
    display: block; }

nav ul {
  display: -webkit-box;
  display: -moz-box;
  display: box;
  display: -webkit-flex;
  display: -moz-flex;
  display: -ms-flexbox;
  display: flex;
  -webkit-box-pack: end;
  -moz-box-pack: end;
  box-pack: end;
  -webkit-justify-content: flex-end;
  -moz-justify-content: flex-end;
  -ms-justify-content: flex-end;
  -o-justify-content: flex-end;

Alexander Domikov
@AlexanderDom
Nov 16 2016 16:21
so @cotovios, you can add width, height, padding, margin, amost anything on div,
BUT
it's a block element, what it means, that any new bloc element gonna start "at a new line"
not just after
like (display: inline, inline-block, inline-flex and other) elements
div by default is display : block
ko loy yee

Nov 16 2016 16:23
@koloyyee, if it helps, you should know that the example they give was totally made from a template, rather than made from scratch
you don't necessarily have to start your portfolio page from nothing--you could start with a template. There's a lot of stuff to be learned either way.
If you start from scratch, you definitely shouldn't expect yours to look at polished as the example. And if you start with a template, you should aim to get it to look better than the example :)
Thayyeb salim
@Thayyebsalim
Nov 16 2016 16:25
starting from scratch would be preferred that way you learn more @koloyyee
Alexander Domikov
@AlexanderDom
Nov 16 2016 16:25
@cotovios , what is basic stuff to good understanding of "div"s for me is css box-model concept https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/CSS_Box_Model/Introduction_to_the_CSS_box_model
Sorin Ruse
@sorinr
Nov 16 2016 16:25
@AlexanderDom yep but you can transform any element ether block or inline in whatever you want using css. here an example of mine: span world
Thayyeb salim
@Thayyebsalim
Nov 16 2016 16:25
I started from scratch, may not as good as the others but still proud of what I could achieve
@koloyyee @raphey
Alexander Domikov
@AlexanderDom
Nov 16 2016 16:26
@sorinr his question was on div element
Cesar Real

it seems like this challenge is a big leap from what was learning before... I guess I should have written what being talked about :X
Alexander Domikov
@AlexanderDom
Nov 16 2016 16:27
and @cotovios last advice (i hope you read all this messages) not anybody accepts bloc elements
what i mean is you can't add div inside paragraph <p> or titles <h1> to <h6>
Thayyeb salim
@Thayyebsalim
Nov 16 2016 16:28
@cotovios yes it is a real leap
Alexander Domikov
@AlexanderDom
Nov 16 2016 16:28
@cotovios start creating blocs with text and images for start :)
Cesar Real
@cotovios
Nov 16 2016 16:30
I dont even know what you mean by blocs
Alexander Domikov
@AlexanderDom
Nov 16 2016 16:30
bloc elements or bloc, there are many and <div> it's one of them
it's elements that take 100% width of there parent bloc
raphey
@raphey
Nov 16 2016 16:31
That's great that you did it from scratch @Thayyebsalim! But I don't think that's the only good way to do it. I learned a ton working with a template. It's really challenging to tweak/change things. And I get the sense that the ability to understand and modify a template is a very important skill to have.
Cesar Real
@cotovios
Nov 16 2016 16:32
also another thing is how do I have access to the code that was learned before? I basically forgot most of it
Thayyeb salim

@raphey :thumbsup: I guess so
raphey
@raphey
Nov 16 2016 16:33
@cotovios you can find your previous stuff from the small challenges if you click Map from the FCC menu
Alexander Domikov
@AlexanderDom
Nov 16 2016 16:33
i made some exemples of bloc elements
and "inline elements"
there some rules that you can apply on bloc elements and not on inline
like top and bottom margins, width, height
Cesar Real
@cotovios
Nov 16 2016 16:35
ah I see what you mean
Alexander Domikov
@AlexanderDom
Nov 16 2016 16:36
nice :)
Cesar Real
@cotovios
Nov 16 2016 16:36
what is the <em>?
to make it italic?
Alexander Domikov
@AlexanderDom
Nov 16 2016 16:37
not really :)
to add "emphase" to your text
you don't really need of it for exercise
Cesar Real
@cotovios
Nov 16 2016 16:37
ah I see
so thats why you need to create a countainer div? cuz its a bloc
Alexander Domikov
@AlexanderDom
Nov 16 2016 16:39
so from my point of view understand css box model first
yes you can create a main container
to encapsulate/regroup anybody in it
Cesar Real
@cotovios
Nov 16 2016 16:39
I didnt understand that about divs, that they behaved that way
Alexander Domikov
@AlexanderDom
Nov 16 2016 16:39
you can use body too
i updated my exemple with a main div
Cesar Real
@cotovios
Nov 16 2016 16:42
hum I see youre using CSS, I wanna do it without using CSS since its not required for this challenge
Alexander Domikov
@AlexanderDom
Nov 16 2016 16:42
you're not the first person to say it :(
yes you can
Cesar Real
@cotovios
Nov 16 2016 16:43
its just that I wanna know how to do it both ways, with and without, and see which one is better
and what are the limits to each and stuff
Alexander Domikov
@AlexanderDom
Nov 16 2016 16:43
you "use css" because you gonna use bootstrap classes with maded css
if you use just pure html without css, it's don't gonna make something just black text on a white page
so you need to go to bootstrap doc page
Cesar Real
@cotovios
Nov 16 2016 16:46
bootstrap is already added
to the thingy
I already added it
Alexander Domikov
@AlexanderDom
Nov 16 2016 16:46
in codepen no
you need to add it in
in css option tab
Cesar Real
@cotovios
Nov 16 2016 16:46
yea I already did that
Alexander Domikov
@AlexanderDom
Nov 16 2016 16:47
ok, so if you don't want to use css
just use bootstrap classes and grid system
Cesar Real
@cotovios
Nov 16 2016 16:48
the way I learned before about using this divs thing was by using <div class="row"> and <div class="col-xs-3"> (for example)
but Im not sure I understood it very well, Im trying to do it that way
Alexander Domikov
@AlexanderDom
Nov 16 2016 16:48
yes
what you don't understand ?
<div class="row"></div> it's a container, a row

how do i post the code in like the text editor i've seen posted thats neater
Nick Garcia

Nov 16 2016 17:19
Use ``` on the line before and the line after your code.

Like this (next line has ```

var code = this.code;

The line above this has ```

The ``` disappears and wraps it in code
You can also type Ctrl + Shift + M (or command if you're on a Mac) for Markup help
@HappyMeerkat regarding your code there is no closing quotations after your URL
It's just a space, and then `class="img-responsive">
The quotations aver class="img-responsive">" need to be moved to after jpg?raw=1

@HappyMeerkat Look at the coloration going on in your <div> element
You're missing one thing that is messing it up. Do you see it?
There is also a < on the second line for some reason. That needs to be deleted. Lastly, you need a closing tag for your <div> element after everything else.

Hi friends !

i am on algorithm exercise " Check for palindromes" and it pass every test but when i have space and dot in one string??!

i really don't know how to do that, i mean, how can i pass to regex : ignore space if there is a dot in it ?!?!?!

Tyler Moeller
@TylerMoeller
Nov 16 2016 18:56
@Robertb4 The app isn't displaying anything for me, but it appears you are getting the data back in the order you want and that your Promises are working. FYI, $.getJSON has built-in promises: .done(), .fail(), .always() etc:
$.getJSON(url, function (data) {
  console.log('success');
}).done(function (data) {
    // call another API if needed
    console.log('second success');
}).fail(function (err) {
    // Process errors
    console.log('error');
}).always(function () {
    console.log('complete');
});

can anyone help me do a CORS request using jquery?

$.getJSON("https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php",{format:"json",action:"query",srsearch:query},function(json){
                    console.log(json);
                    }
                );

I keep getting a No Access Control Origin header error message when I send my request.

@PeterHSteele You need to use an action to access the api's commands. Here's an example: http://jsbin.com/biputi/edit?js,console

It looks fine to me. I'm not sure why it wouldn't work on your phone or ipad...

@PeterHSteele Also, you need the 'callback=?', which tells the api to send jsonp back. Codepen only allows jsonp with sites that have an access control origin header active.

@HappyMeerkat Don't look at in chat. The chat doesn't apply all css and js due to security.

oh ok, what about the ipad? its literally just my header and pixelated background?

@HappyMeerkat That'll be something you need to play with due to all ipads rendering differently. I'd remove the <link> in the html panel and add fontawesome through Settings->CSS.
also, you should never use <br>'s
use margin, padding instead to separate content

Thanks @jdtdesigns . How do I add the "callback=?" as part of the data object I send to the server? Would it be {dataType: "jsonp"}?

@PeterHSteele Your using getJSON like a manual $.ajax call. The only thing you need is the api url and a callback function when using $.getJSON. It does the rest for you.
whad do you say
