@grantknaver found a codepen that's better than my example, http://codepen.io/georgemarts/pen/qOXZbq/
@grantknaver i cleaned it up for you a bit at this jsbin so you can focus on just how to make a request https://jsbin.com/yucipekeyi/edit?html,js,console

Nov 19 2016 00:13
yea, most folks turn to jquery to make their ajax requests, as a result, when you try to google for tutorials or explanations on making ajax requests using native javascript, the results returned from the search are littered with jquery answers/solutions
grantknaver
@grantknaver
Nov 19 2016 00:13
yep
the jquery method would be through $.getJSON() right?
a.sanchez
@0100000101010011
Nov 19 2016 00:16
@grantknaver that's one way, for greater flexibility, the $.ajax() method may be one to get familiar with
grantknaver
@grantknaver
Nov 19 2016 00:17
would you recommend using jquery instead
because even with you breaking it down me confused
a.sanchez
@0100000101010011
Nov 19 2016 00:18
@grantknaver your code example is in native javascript, i don't see any jquery anywhere, although that doesn't mean you cant just bring in jquery, i'd still recommend in this instance pushing through the native way of making the request you're wanting to make
grantknaver
@grantknaver
Nov 19 2016 00:19
OK... bummer lol
a.sanchez
@0100000101010011
Nov 19 2016 00:19
@grantknaver this is not my choice though, it's yours
@grantknaver jquery was made for instances like this, to skip some of the learning curve and just get the code working, i'm just making a suggestion
grantknaver
@grantknaver
Nov 19 2016 00:21
Nooo your right lol
but I think I know what would help. I think I need context
right now I cant tie the example together with my code
a.sanchez
@0100000101010011
Nov 19 2016 00:22
@grantknaver one thing i like to do when i want to isolate context, is to create an example for myself, kind of like what i did with that jsbin i gave you
your goal is to make the ajax request a successful one, then go to something like jsbin or codepen and code only that part of the javascript out
once you have a successful request, start adding/tying in other bits of your surrounding code
grantknaver
@grantknaver
Nov 19 2016 00:25
do you think you could throw in an example request in the code so I can see how it is supposed to look?
a.sanchez
@0100000101010011

ya I havent ever used request,readyState , request.status, your help would be appreicated
This is weird though most of the time with challenges are over things that have been discussed, this one feels like I missed a chapter or two

i havent looked at free code camp lessons, but sometimes the author assumes or is encouraging you to explore solutions that may be outside the scope of the material they covered
a.sanchez
@0100000101010011
Nov 19 2016 00:45
@grantknaver at this jsbin, you'll see the native request integrated in your code https://jsbin.com/cilutikupe/edit?html,js,console,output
in the jsbin across the top, make sure the console tab is viewable and you'll see the data it's returning, and if you scroll through that part way down, you'll see it dishes out temp, coordinates, etc
a.sanchez
@0100000101010011
Nov 19 2016 00:52
and this jsbin has an example, swapping out the native javascript ajax request, with jquery https://jsbin.com/reterejohe/edit?html,js,console,output

Hello I am working on the "Exact Change" challenge and some how my code gets 96.74 - 60 to become 36.739999999999995 O.o
https://jsbin.com/vidaga/edit?js,console

Anyone have any clue how that happens ?

@0100000101010011
Nov 19 2016 01:15
@kkindorf ok, it looks like you're referring to the regular expressions within your code, to account for the space. regular expressions is mostly beyond my scope of the help you might be looking for, although i'll take a couple of cracks at it, maybe some in this thread can provide further insight for you

lI am trying to take the json data that comes out and make it a anchor hyperlink. The search comes out with three distinct sections in the third section are some http links that are not active so it does nothing when you click it. I have tried wrapping in an anchor tag with response [3][1]it was chosen to see if the method would work. so far not luck. can anyone help me. I am doing a basic search with the term star trek. The search works with most any term. You will have to do a search to get results to hopefully understand what I am talking about. Thanks in advance http://codepen.io/jwright_231/pen/pEwmJw

Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Nov 19 2016 03:02
@jowright - you would actually have to wrap that text in an anchor tag, <a href="the URL you are processing" target="_blank">the link text</a> where you fill in the information with the URL going into the 'href=""` section, and you could just echo the URL as the link text, but you could also take the last part of the URL and use that as text.
jowright
@jowright
Nov 19 2016 03:04
But the links are json data and cannot be accessed without jquery and when i do place the href would have to equal response 3 as an example and when I do that it says the link is broken in codepen
I want the whole section of json data to be hyperlinks but the url will change when the search term changes. It is not a constant
response [3][1] is the example href link
jowright
@jowright
Nov 19 2016 03:10
I probably will have to start by declaring a variable equal to response3 and use that as the href I am trying to think through all my options.
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Nov 19 2016 03:11
@jowright - you have to write the code to generate the type of HTML elements that you want to present to the user - you do that by assigning styles with CSS rules and classes, and you are generating text that has <br> tags in it - so what you have to do, when you are outputting the section of URLs, which are just coming to you as textual information, with no encoding as any particular HTML element, is to generate the <a href=" and then output the URL string, and then concatenate " target="_blank"> and then output the link text, which could just be the URL value as text, then close the anchor tag with </a>. There is no "magic" in the browser that will recognize something that looks like a URL as a link - it has to be encoded with the proper HTML tags and syntax.
@jowright - to be a little more helpful (not trying to be insulting) you have hard-coded your accesses to the responsewith the [0], [1], etc. array indices - you should be generating a nested for loop to do that output based on length. You might then need to do some additional testing to know when you are outputting the URL section, or actually what you probably get is a title for the search item in array location [0][0], then the summary text in [1][0], and the URL in [2][0] - if that is the standard format for the information, then you can output them in blocks of information with a title, summary and URL (as a clickable link) in one section.
jowright
@jowright

@jowright - you're welcome - let me know if you have further questions, if I'm on, I'll be happy to try and help... I haven't done this challenge yet, but I see the technique that you'd need to use. Good luck!

(A assume it's a totally silly reason but I just don't see it)

An additional question: in codepen I can't access the body tag. I wanted to style with one of the standard Bootstrap 4 classes, for instance bg-info. I wrapped the code in an additional container to do this. Is there a more elegant solution?

@ttemcha Give the button a class and select it in your css. .my-button { font-weight: 300; }. You also need to make sure the font you're using has the weight your trying to declare, otherwise it won't change.

@c0d0er I'd lower the margin up top, so the token selection is not off screen. Also, the numbering of the boxes kinda takes away from the experience. There's never been a tic toe board that's numbered, at least as far as i can recall. ;)

@xsmobi You can't run a page through https:// and then use a http link to a request or file in your code. It's called mixed insecure content and won't work. Take off the https: from https://codepen... and you're fine. Also, you should change the if ( json.author.name... ) to if ( json.author ), otherwise it will throw an error when there is no author. ;)

@JackVizl I'completed the Random Quote assignment today. I coded and tested it locally (because it is somehow easier to work with Chrome's console.log). I works well, but I can't get it to work on Codepen. Perhaps your problem is similar. Try run it locally on your PC or host it at Bitballoon, for instance. I posted this problem an hour ago, you might check answers.

JD Tadlock
@jdtdesigns
Nov 19 2016 15:01
@bpalij That's the standard these days for including js. It makes sure the document is loaded before running the js. You don't need .ready() this way.
Bogdan Paliy
@bpalij
Nov 19 2016 15:03
@jdtdesigns how else i can write a piece of code, that starts automatically, if ready isnt necessary?
JD Tadlock
@jdtdesigns
Nov 19 2016 15:04
@bpalij By loading the js this way, it will start automatically without .ready()
Bogdan Paliy
@bpalij
Nov 19 2016 15:06
@jdtdesigns but why then the click event works only when i click,but doesnt start as soon as the document is ready?
JD Tadlock
@jdtdesigns
Nov 19 2016 15:06
@bpalij Because it's a 'click' event?
In order to fire code without a click you can put it in a function and call that function.
Bogdan Paliy
@bpalij
Nov 19 2016 15:08
@jdtdesigns so the code beyond functions will work, but the code in the function will not start until the function is called, i understand correct?

For anyone who's done the twitch project, to make sure I'm understanding this right: freecodecamp doesn't want you to call the api at all anymore, instead just pretend that theJSON they give you here (https://gist.github.com/QuincyLarson/2ff6892f948d0b7118a99264fd9c1ce8) is what was returned from the call. Correct?
JD Tadlock
@jdtdesigns
Nov 19 2016 15:35

@PeterHSteele They don't require you to use any api in particular. You can use Twitch's api with an api key or you can use the workaround api. The workaround url is https://wind-bow.hyperdev.space/twitch-api/streams/<name of streamer>/?callback=?

Just replace 'streams' with 'channels' to get the channel info and <name of streamer> with the name. ;)

@Nei-V still looking at the error?

thanks @javineya , i thought the chat is lagging :) the problem is that after you input a search term and press search, the textarea placeholder and a small paragraph get populated with the searchterm (and this is OK), but then, in a second or so, everything gets deleted (this is not OK).

The reason why "everything gets deleted" is due to the <form> tag. It will reload the page since it does not have an action attribute which tells the form "what needs to be done when the form is submitted" by your search button. So when your page reloads, all page data is refreshed and you're presented with a "fresh" copy of your webpage.

Just get rid of the <form> tag from your code. That should work for now.

@JBavantgarde Of course! I am a Jr. Developer and almost everyday I am asked to do something at my job that makes me uncomfortable. So, the feeling doesn't go away :) but you get better at dealing with it.

@Rajindrajith good work! keep going. i'll add some words(just my opinion):

  • timline is not quite readable for me (try to center it)
  • you have a little additional vertical line in blockquote (i think it's not really necessary)
  • add some margin between your image and timeline

you can check mine if you want :smile:

Ivan Temchur
@ttemcha
Nov 19 2016 21:43
@Rajindrajith i'll check
@Rajindrajith got it. you have fixed height on your #section1 rule
@Rajindrajith delete it. do not add fixed height to your wrapping sections, its not a good practice. let your content form your height
Rajindrajith
@Rajindrajith
Nov 19 2016 21:48

@Rajindrajith yes. its not necessesary. your height will add along with your content
@Rajindrajith also your CSS is not readable. check out some Style Guides and pick what matches your style:
