@urketadic - if you are doing your own handling of the keypresses in javascript, you should be able to set up any mapping you want - use an object for mapping the values to another value, as some of the early lessons of objects taught the technique.
@k-vosswinkel - if you don't know this little trick - if you can get your JSON data from the console.log or developer's tools in the browser, you can paste it into a site like http://codebeautify.org/jsonviewer and have it formatted to show you all of the structure within the object.

hey guys, I'm stuck trying to center my text in bootstrap for a slit on my tribute page; I took a peek at the source code just to see what I was missing after reading through some old lessons, and I'm still stuck? wondering if someone can explain this to me. https://codepen.io/lyndxe/pen/zoLbGZ
phrased that wrong - I can center the text, but trying to figure out how to keep the text close to the bullet points.

Dec 12 2016 01:24
Hey, @lyndxe. I'm looking through your pen right now.
The first thing I notice is that you've got several divs with the text-center class that don't close
that is, a new div that has "text-center" opens before the last one closes.
lyndxe
@lyndxe
Dec 12 2016 01:25
yes, I did know that, I was in the middle of using those elements still (I think?) and hadn't closed off those divs yet
okay, cool, I didn't notice that one
John Hiner

I only mention it because I noticed as I was trying to isolate the list in order to test it. I think it is probably redundant and you can remove a few of the instances of that class.

John Hiner
@LudensCogitet
Dec 12 2016 01:29
Yeah. Bootstrap, I find, is a strange beast. lol.
It's super easy if you just wrap it in a div with "text-align: center" :D
Is this how you want it to look? Or do you want a boostrap-style list in the center?
That pen just uses CSS, but I'm trying to get a feel for what you're looking for.
Wait!?
It didn't work. lol

Dec 12 2016 01:33
@lyndxe - having the col-xs-12 as a class in a div without it being a descendant of a <div class="row"> could cause some problems. The intended hierarchy of elements for using bootstrap columns is:
<div class="container">
    <div class="row">
        <div class="col-xs-*">
        </div>
    </div>
</div>

@Slusherman - are you creating these .item element on the fly? I don't think that the hover will apply to those since it is being executed before those elements exist? THat's what I'm hypothesizing...
John Hiner
@LudensCogitet
Dec 12 2016 01:36
@lyndxe One thing to remember about Bootstrap, at least as I've come to know it, is that it is not intended to replace CSS entirely, but is a way of making some things easier. I've seen several people suggest overwriting Bootstraps CSS rules when necessary.
And you're welcome, if I helped. All I really did was give you the CSS answer. lol.

@Slusherman - you need to do something like this:

      // Append the parsed HTML
      var elementHandle =
        page.append("<div id='item'><h3>" + titles[title] + "</h3>" + snippets[title] + "</div>");
      $(elementHandle).hover(function() {
        $(this).toggleClass("active");
        console.log("entered the div");
      });

Although I think that that is putting multiple event handlers on there.

ACTUALLY - let me try something else...

Dec 12 2016 01:50
@Slusherman - yes, it seems strange. I'm still trying to see if there is a better way. One thing that I did notice is that you are using id="item", and you really cannot have the same ID name assigned multiple times. Your initial attempt to add the hover handler was $('.item'), which would be a class selector. But I changed your code that creates the elements to use class="item", and the selector still didn't work. So my code does assign a handler, but it seems to activate the handler a number of times when you enter the area on the screen where the elements are? Not sure about that just yet...
Slusherman
@Slusherman
Dec 12 2016 01:53
@khaduch Sorry that should be class item and not an ID. I was just experimenting trying to get it to work. It should append <div class=item></div> per loop
@khaduch maybe I should replace .append with another method of rendering the html?

@Slusherman - good work! I just came up with an alternate, too, but yours looks like a good solution for you... good luck!
@MccalB - you have to make it into what you want it to be -the example just shows one way to make it look.
For some place to look at to get an idea of how to approach the setup of such a page, try http://w3schools.com/bootstrap, and look at the examples in the "Themes" section there for some page design walkthroughs, including implementation of the pages in Bootstrap. You can also get more detailed info on various bootstrap elements as you go through those examples. It is not a quick read, but I found them to be helpful to get my page to the point where it is...

@Johnnie843 @Johnnie843 - the way I've seen people do this is to make the navbar items in a <ul> and make the list items display:inline-block; I don't know that I've seen a dropdown menu, but you might look for bootstrap navbar examples to do that? Or at least see the techniques used there to achieve the kind of alignment that you want.

@francorufo - I just noticed - it is the only "offline" element on a line with two online elements - the line indicating the game being played is not there? Bryxx

christopherwangemann adding margin-bottom: -20px; to the navbar will fix the gap, tho not sure if a - is the best way around it.

Dec 12 2016 03:31
@francorufo - if I edit that block with the "offline" element in it and just copy a "description" from another element that is online - it makes the alignment work out. I cannot explain how that actually affects the alignment other than that it makes the elements all be of the same size?

Dec 12 2016 03:35
@francorufo in addition to my previous comment, editing that single offline element to have the description div fixed its alignment with the other two online divs in that row, but then if I shifted the window width so that there were two on a line, it made the next case of this hacked "online" box and the next "offline" box not be aligned. I guess you have to have the same height for all elements to get the desired effect?

@Phyrrax - hello Josh - it doesn't look like you have the correct structure for the navbar (at least not the same as the one that I used, which i copied from the Bootstrap template for the navbar?) Also, you are not loading jquery.js and bootstrap.js, which you need, in that order, to have the collapsed navbar be able to expand.
Josh Hunter

Dec 12 2016 03:55
I think that maybe I screwed this up. I followed some supplemental videos on youtube and I'm now noticing that they were using an outdated of bootstrap (3.3.0) so maybe that is my problem. @Phyrrax - basically, I plugged this code into the top of the page (removing the unnecessary, as far as CodePen use is concerned, <body> tag) as well as adding jquery.js and bootstrap.js, and it is sort of working - not sure if I got the alignment that you wanted, if you were trying to not right align the navbar links:

<nav class="navbar navbar-default navbar-fixed-top navbar-inverse">
  <div class="container-fluid">
    <div class="navbar-header">
      <button type="button" class="navbar-toggle" data-toggle="collapse" data-target="#hidden-toggle">
        <span class="icon-bar"></span>
        <span class="icon-bar"></span>
        <span class="icon-bar"></span>
      </button>
      <a class="navbar-brand" href="#">Ken's Portfolio</a>

You can start with the template from getbootstrap.com and you should be flying...

hey dudes, need some help getting my quote on the bottom right of the tribute page to collapse under the degrees list, trying to use bootstrap columns but must be using them incorrectly. https://codepen.io/Skch4/pen/woxbvy/

@lalzart - well, you can take many routes to get there. If you have an idea of what the content should be, and are struggling with design / layout / implementation, one place that I found to be helpful is http://w3schools.com/bootstrap in the "Themes" section. They walk through the design and implementation of some pages that would make pretty good portfolio pages. It is based on using Bootstrap, which FCC at least "suggests" as being useful through the early lessons... maybe it will be helpful?
@Scooch - I can give a couple pointers...

@Scooch - your first line: <div class="container col-xs-12 col-sm-12 col-md-12 col-lg-12"> should not have the column classes on it. The basic structure for using the grid would be:

<div class="container">
    <div class="row">
        <div class="col-xs-6">
        </div>
        <div class="col-xs-6">
        </div>
    </div>
    <div class="row">
        <div class="col-md-4">
        </div>
        <div class="col-md-8">
        </div>
    </div>

</div>

where the numbers of the columns in each row adds up to 12, generally. Nesting rows inside of columns is possible, but that is a more advanced use the grids. The basic thing would be using rows with columns that add up to 12. And if you are using xs for your screen size, that means that the columns will not reconfigure at a higher screen resolution.

Dec 12 2016 04:56
@Scooch - yes, I expanded my example a little. If you take a look at any of the overviews of the Bootstrap grid, you'll see how they can be combined, and then you should probably get a little more familiar with how the various screen size selections work, because you can use multiple screen size / column combinations within a div and have it do many different configurations depending on the screen (viewport) size. For the tribute page, you probably just want to keep it fairly simple, though.

@ssgriffen - okay... this is a little complicated. At least when using the Chrome browser, it is complicated. You are loading your API request using http://, but initially loading the page using https:// this is a mixed request situation, so Chrome will not allow this to be loaded. So the solution seems to be loading over http:// for your codepen. But then, at least on Chrome once again, you cannot use the geolocation. One solution for that is to use http://ip-api.com to get the location based on the IP address. This is potentially not as accurate (or maybe even wildly inaccurate?) but it gets you going.
The next thing is that you have to pay attention to your JSON data structure and how to access it. You are currently accessing it incorrectly - I changed the place where you are picking out the location name to $("#city").html("<p>" + data["location"].name +"</p>"); - or you could use data.location.name because these are nested objects. You can try this on firefox, load with http:// and make that change, you should see this update.
There is a discussion on the forum somewhere in FreeCodeCamp about the problem with Chrome and geolocation. I think it is this: FreeCodeCamp/FreeCodeCamp#9145 - you can read that for further information...
I hope that all of this helps you!
khaduch @khaduch - departing the campground for the night... happy coding everyone!

good morning. working on the Pomodoro Clock & having trouble with input. Can anyone spot the issue(s) in my code? this isn't setting the input as the time on the clock
HTML:

<body>
  <div>
    <p id="time">25:00</p>
  </div>
  <div>
    <input type="text" id="interval" placeholder="how many minutes?">
    <input type="button" value="set timer" onClick="setTime()">
  </div>
</body>

JS/jQuery:

$(document).ready(function() {

function setTime() {
  var timeInterval =
document.getElementById("interval");
  var newTime = timeInterval.value;
  $("#time").innerHTML(newTime + ": 00");
  console.log(newTime);
}

Dec 12 2016 12:11
@mltr $("#time"). html(...) ;
instead of .innerHTML
Sorin Ruse
@sorinr
Dec 12 2016 12:23
@mltr as @alpox pointed out why mix jquery with vanilla javascript. try to use only one. innerHTML is a vanilla js function and is used like element.innerHTML = "new content here". in your case element is a jquery element selection $("#time"). using jquery it will be $("#time").html(new content here). and you can say var newTime = $("#interval").val(); then use it where you want
@sorinr to be honest, I'm not sure at this point what's vanilla js vs jquery so thank you for helping me distinguish. i'll go back & try you suggestion. the double variables I found in an example I checked out before the wiki search page. single var wasn't working at the time, but I'd like to go back to that one & tinker now. many thanks!

@Aleks1406 This is a scoping problem.
the variable html is only defined within the newQuote function, so it is inaccessible outside it.
One solution is to create the tweet link and adding it to a tweet button within the newQuote function.
Another is to get the html directly from the page wihtin the newTweet function, instead of from the html variable (because it doesn't exist anymore).

@saylos The only thing I would change is that you either hide the twitter button in case there is no quote yet (otherwise people will tweet 'undefined'). Or put in a default value like "Check out this cool Chuck Norris quote generator" + a link to your pen.

@mariafmontagu Yes. You can use services like imgur to host your picture.
You can only add assets on codepen if you have pro membership.

@mariafmontagu One work-around I've used is to put an image in a private Tumblr post, then get the URL by viewing the image.
Probably not a good idea long term or large scale, but works for single images in tests, etc.

Dec 12 2016 15:04
@saylos I think the source of both problems is that twitter doesn't handle HTML codes like &mdash; & &quot; very well. It breaks at precisely those points. Because the whole quote and the name will turn up in the url. You need to replace these characters with proper characters that twitter accepts.
@davemflick That would work if you have a server of your own. But if you would, you probably also would know how to do that, so I'm guessing you don't? In either case, you could download the image, crop it to the right proportions (also saves bandwith) and make an album on an image provider like imgur.

@ionutinz - taking a look at your portfolio project. It looks good, although I don't like the font choice, especailly in the "About" section - that will be hard to read. Perhaps if the font-size was larger it would be better? Just a difficult font style for such small text. It is also difficult to read the headings on your "Contact" section with all uppercased versions of that same font.
One thing that you need for your responsive navbar is to add bootstrap.js as a second external plugin on your JS tab, so that it will expand when you click the icon on the reduced navbar.

@Robertb4 - I would pay attention to the CSS errors and JS errors. Definitely find the CSS errors that mention unknown attributes. I haven't spent time putting things in alphabetical order (in the css declarations). JS errors are usually worthwhile to fix. The HTML error reports I haven't found to be extremely useful? I like to take the route of using "View Frame Source" for the page (if it's a codepen page, just view the source of the rendered frame, not the entire page with the CodePen UI.) and copy it and paste it into https://validator.w3.org. That is very useful...

To answer your other question, yes, some of the CSS issues remaining should be fixed. Like this:

}

Also, IDs need to be unique - you appear to have #item set as the ID for every user returned. @Robertb4

@neeraj08 The code is difficult to follow with so many global variables. Instead of an actual button for sending your Tweet, you can use an anchor tag and just update the href attribute instead. You can get the tweet text directly from the page with the HTML stripped out using jQuery's .text() method. $('element').text()
Also, the URL should be https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text=The Text You Want To Tweet
Neeraj Lakhotia

@NeelDVirus - I would advise against linking or even trying to link to files using a filepath like that. Aside from security issues and inconcistencies across browsers... just not used in the 'real world'. Stick to how you will do it when its actually 'live'. ie:

<img src="Personal\Images\Idiot\1.jpg">

Assuming your index.html is located at the same level as the 'Personal' folder. Normally, its good practice to have a structure such as:

D:\index.html
D:\images (folder)
D:\images\image1.jpg
D:\images\image2.jpg

etc. then you can use:

<img src="images\image1.jpg">

And the whole site is 'portable' in that if you move it, the links still work.

Tom

Dec 12 2016 21:02
@Johnnie843 it should fill 100% width of its container

@Jimbobmahooley you can email the image to yourself and than right click the image when you open the email and copy the image link.
so basically you can use google's servers if you have a gmail

you can do it with whatever email you have
no need to create a new one.
@moT01 If you look at IE, float: right; should make the UL element float towards the right and all the way to the corner of the <nav>. It doesn't do this though.

@neeraj08 Yea you did :D
.getJSON is asynchronous. You can use the variable data only in the function where you got it. The code which runs after this function will run before you get the data.

@neeraj08

function(val) {
    data=val;
    //console.log(val);
  });
  quote=data[0].content + "- " + data[0].title + "</p>";
  $(".quote").html(quote);
  console.log("quote loaded");
  changeBackgroundColor();

-->

function(val) {
    data=val;
    //console.log(val);
      quote=data[0].content + "- " + data[0].title + "</p>";
  $(".quote").html(quote);
  console.log("quote loaded");
  changeBackgroundColor();
  });
