@mirrortorrent lower case 'c' in addclass, should be addClass as variables/function names are case sensitive
@mirrortorrent and keep the case consistent for fadeOut as well

Jan 02 2017 01:22
when is case sensitive important? fade is in lowercase but out is?

can someone tell me why my text is overlapping my other text on this codepen?
Francisco
@dgfrancisco
Jan 02 2017 01:35
@allenlswain lets see …
@allenlswain its becouse the text-align-vertically class, as you play with position you need to stablish a z-index level so you can put both in the same or not, know what I mean?
allenlswain
@allenlswain
Jan 02 2017 01:38
it was originally correct with a big grey area and white text, but now the area of the grey div doesn't cover everything inside it like I would think it would
oh i think i understand
i will try to fix that, thank you.
Francisco
@dgfrancisco
Jan 02 2017 01:41
well probably the issue with the background its the position, probably the <div> doesnt know whats the height cause the sons inside are in diferent z-index probably a height will fix that o a overflow: hidden if the content let you (If you have something always inside and not outside like a drop down ;))

@Shoyren whether you use it or not, id="image" can only be used once. Other IDs will need to be id="image01", id="image02" etc. Every ID in your page needs to have a unique value.

hi guys , im using bootstrap to style a website. My goal is to have different background colors for different sections as you scroll down
so I apply a class, and tried to style with a different color
but it's not working?
I bought the canvas theme and I'm trying to adjust it piece by piece to fit what I want
Tyler Moeller
@TylerMoeller
Jan 02 2017 03:52
@ConorsCode It would help to see the code if possible. Here's a basic example of different shades of blue for various sections in a single page website: http://codepen.io/TylerMoeller/pen/xRagVr

Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.</p> </div> </div> </section>
.value-offer{
font-size:20px;
line-height:2;
margin: 3%;
background:gray;
}
for some reason it does not work @TylerMoeller
Tyler Moeller
@TylerMoeller
Jan 02 2017 04:01
@moT01 Yes, if I understand correctly, it would be like: $('selector1, selector2, selector3').css('background-color', 'red');
@ConorsCode That's only one section in the code you gave, but if you give each <section> a unique class or ID name, you can assign a different background color to each. For example: http://codepen.io/TylerMoeller/pen/QdLxPJ
ConorsCode
@ConorsCode

is there a problem with using preventdefault on a form in codepen
Tyler Moeller
@TylerMoeller

only if you're hoping to submit the form, I think that's the default you would be preventing.
Tom

Tyler Moeller
@TylerMoeller
Jan 02 2017 04:19
I think that's e.stopPropagation()?
Sorry, not sure exactly what the issue is. You might try the debug view of your codepen to see if it's different - I think there are some security blocks in effect with some browsers when submitting a form inside an <iframe>

Sorry, stepped away. Back now. @moT01 I don't think you need to do .submit(), just set up the variables when the start button is clicked.
And you shouldn't have to use a <form> here either.
Typically, you use <form> if you're sending the data to a server

Jan 02 2017 05:04
@moT01 I'm having trouble keeping the data ordered correctly when I have more than one username in the array of channels (ie, keeping the stream object lined up with the channel info, etc.) I'm not sure if it's the way I have my javascript structured or if it's just the nature of calling $.getJSON but I can't get consistent ordering either way. I can provide a link to the CodePen if that would help. I could also be overthinking it and structuring the javascript incorrectly but the general problem is making sure I have the right stream associated with the right channel when setting up the html
Tom
@moT01
Jan 02 2017 05:05

so your saying the channels arent getting the right descriptions basically
or whatever the second thing is, the stream
stephen shaw
@sshaw3306
Jan 02 2017 05:14
@moT01 It just is a matter of calling $getJSON with the same channel and making sure I've got all the data back for that channel before moving onto the next. I'm getting intermittently incorrect results and before it seemed to be all over the place.
@moT01 Taking a look at the console now though it seems to be relatively consistent, which is strange since it hasn't been that way
@moT01 Maybe all I needed was for you to just open the link lol

Cristian Polycarpou

@sshaw3306 i heard that how do i center without using <center>
stephen shaw
@sshaw3306
Jan 02 2017 05:29
@OmniPoly One way, as that article mentions, is to use text-align:center; on the div and the contents of the element will be centered. I've used that with varying results.
@OmniPoly In your case, removing the <center> elements and applying text-align: center; to the container div (with class="row") should do the trick
Cristian Polycarpou
@OmniPoly
Jan 02 2017 05:30
and that works for images aswell @sshaw3306 ?
stephen shaw
@sshaw3306
Jan 02 2017 05:31
@OmniPoly If they are within the div that has text-align:center applied to it then yes that should work
@OmniPoly You could place your h1 and p within that div as well to center them
Cristian Polycarpou
@OmniPoly
Jan 02 2017 05:33
@sshaw3306 ok cool... so images side by side?
stephen shaw
@sshaw3306
Jan 02 2017 05:34
@OmniPoly Removing the <center> elements should take care of that - images are inline elements whereas center was a block-level element, which is what caused it to move the second image to a new line
Cristian Polycarpou
@OmniPoly

Jan 02 2017 14:37
@troutman21 Since these will all be screenshots from your computer, it will be easiest to edit them in a photo editor to make them all the same size. Otherwise, you'll have to set up overflow and clipping in your CSS.
Kind of like this, though I believe this solution will result in them being different widths: http://www.minimit.com/articles/tips-resources/css-aspect-ratio-to-have-images-of-same-height

Hello everyone.
I am stuck with the Javascript challenge named 'Using Objects for Lookups'
Following is my code as of now:

// Setup
function phoneticLookup(val) {
  var result = "";

  // Only change code below this line
  var lookup = {
    "alpha":"Adams",
    "bravo":"Boston",
    "charlie":"Chicago",
    "delta":"Denver",
    "echo":"Easy",
    "foxtrot":"Frank"
  };

  // Only change code above this line
  return result;
}

// Change this value to test
phoneticLookup("charlie");

Any ideas?

@ghulamshabir Seems you're using a wrapper service to get the weather: https://fourtonfish.com/tutorials/weather-web-app/ ?
Would be nice to present an error when location is blocked - I had a blank gray page until I enabled location. Nice use of React :+1:

Has anyone here finished the Pairwise challenge? https://www.freecodecamp.com/challenges/pairwise

I'm having a hard time understanding why

pairwise([1, 1, 1], 2) should return 1
pairwise([0, 0, 0, 0, 1, 1], 1) should return 10.

@sorinr problem is that openweather api is over http and built in broswer geolocation works on https, I used crossorigin .me proxy in my js weather app which is now broken i think because of the proxy is down. I tried dark sky but unfortunately it does not allow cors requests, so many issues I can not tell in one go, it took me several days. I am using chrome
does anyone know why the search bar and button aren't aligning center? they both have float:left and they're in a parent div with margin:auto
so they should be aligned in the middle

@ghulamshabir just a free tip: if u r afraid you will exceed the free quota just make a few calls to the api, grab the response and place it in a json var and work with that var until you fully finish your design and then switch back to api calls. in codepen disable autoupdating coz eact time you make a change in code the api will be called again and again wasting your limit calls for nothing

@codecampamy If you are talking about the actual text color, it is because you set the background to white, not the actual color.
text doesn't have a background color, so it won't appear.
If you are talking about the actual color of the navbar, it is because you are specifying the lists, which are only text.

@calvinyiu Your bookmark links are correct in your Navbar, but your #about, #portfolio, and #contact sections need to be taller so the page is scrollable. Add this to your CSS to see what I mean:
#about,
#portfolio,
#contact {
  min-height: 75vh;
}
Sorin Ruse

Jan 02 2017 17:46
@solimansara because your imgs are different sizes you can add this to css: .thumbnail { min-height: 280px; }
Sara Soliman

Thanks Sorin, it worked! Why did you choose 280px though?
Sorin Ruse
@sorinr
Jan 02 2017 18:05
@solimansara just looked how much height it takes for the biggest img :) its just a "calculated" value
@solimansara you can play with that value. if you make it lower the thumbnails will not have the same height. if you make it higher will just add white space at the bottom and make them equal.
Sara Soliman
@solimansara
Jan 02 2017 18:11
The largest picture is 490 px in hight. How did you know that the 280 is the right number?
Sorin Ruse
@sorinr
Jan 02 2017 18:15
@solimansara yes the real img height is 490px but because you have it in a col-md-4 it adjust automatically the width and implicitly also the height on a ratio of width/height

@troutman21 you'll want to use something to set the margins auto and center the block element, check out the "Helper classes" section in the CSS Bootstrap page. Add a class of 'center-block' to the wrapping div that has the class sm-button around each contact button.
Tyler Moeller
@TylerMoeller
Jan 02 2017 18:41
@calvinyiu Glad that worked for you. If I understand your question correctly, I think you want to use min-height instead of height in your CSS:
  #contact {
   padding-top: 10px;
   min-height: 350px;
   color: #222;
   background-color: #f2f2f2;
   position: relative;
 }
That will allow the section to be as large as it needs to be to fit all the content

It looks like your button isn't working because your page isn't accessing twitter's scripts to identify your button as a "twitter" button
enable jQuery on your javascript and then try adding this line

@mdbailin Did it, didn't work. :/

Then, I would check Twitter's docs and see an example of how you can have javascript embed an html element of a twitter button
like so,
function makeButtonWork() {
  para = $('#quote').text();
  $('#tweet').html('<a target="_blank" class="twitter-share-button" href="https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text=' + para + '" data-size="large"><img src="http://theparttimeprogrammer.com/fcc/quotes/images/tweet.png" alt="Tweet"></a>');
}

@Ahm98 how could i make the pic and text box the same hieght?

Jan 02 2017 21:29
@aleutiancowboy I would maybe give the picture less in the "col-xs-#" part and maybe give the text a bit more to make it wider (ex picture is col-xs-4 and text is col-xs-8; these are random numbers). I'm just a beginner as well though so I'm not 100% sure

@Marnorz I just learned this before i started the tribute page. The css part of codepen is similar to the <style>.. </style> part of the regular tutorial. We didn't learn javascript yet, so i didn't use it.

One last question: I pass the generated quote in a paragraph. I want that this paragraph gets animated every time I click the button. Right not it only does it when the page load. What do I need to adjust?

document.getElementById('quote-text');
function rQFunction(){
  window.x = Math.floor(Math.random()*26)+1;
  output.innerHTML = quotes[x].quote + " ~ " + quotes[x].author;
  $( "#quote-text" ).fadeIn( "slow", function() {
    // Animation complete
  });
}
I want to fade something in with the click of a button. This doensn't work. What is wrong with it? I have been thinking about it for the last 30 minutes and couldn't find a solution.

@philipp32 Have you tried erasing the original text first?
Sonya Chan

Jan 02 2017 22:37
@philipp32 the fade in works on page load. I think you need to fade out the previous quote first so you can fade in the new one

Hey all, I'm having an issue with the game pausing for each iteration of the game. My game runs all of the moves at once. I want my game to play one move, then play two moves, etc.

hey I'm trying to write the voting app using react.js I have a question using data-attributes for forms
is there a way to access an input statement without using event for a form using React.js?
