Hey, I have two questions about the Front-End certificate. On average, how many hours does it take to attain the certificate? and are you able to change the name, that appears on the certificate?

Thanks, for the info Adam. Do you know whether you are able to change, the name that appears on the certificate, prior to accepting it? I ask, because I would not want my username to be on the certificate, instead of real name, lol.

I am doing this challenge and my solution for it is this:

// Setup
var myObj = {
  gift: "pony",
  pet: "kitten",
  bed: "sleigh"
};

function checkObj(checkProp) {
  // Your Code Here
  return (myObj.hasOwnProperty(checkProp)) ? myObj[checkProp] : "Not found";
}

// Test your code by modifying these values
checkObj("house");

but it isn't working, what is wrong with it?

@Adam-Morris instead of putting an else for the no contacts try ending the for and then returning no contacts. What this will do is go straight to no contacts if when looping in the for there is no match on first name
  for (var i = 0; i < contacts.length; i++){
    if (contacts[i].firstName == firstName){
      if(contacts[i].hasOwnProperty(prop)){
        return contacts[i][prop];
      } else {
        return "No such property";
      }
    }
}
return "No such contact";
Adam Morris
@Adam-Morris
Jan 08 2017 01:51
but why didnt mine work?
Alexandria
@astrawter
Jan 08 2017 01:52
i could be wrong but i think since you have it inside of the for it will not work because it has to loop through each contact in order to find out if the contact is there. with the else placed inside of the for loop it cannot technically be sure to return because it has to loop
Nitin Chandran Nair
@NitinNair89
Jan 08 2017 01:54
instead of return statement, put console.log and see what it says
Adam Morris
@Adam-Morris
Jan 08 2017 01:54
I got it working with
  for (var i = 0; i < contacts.length; i++) {
    if (contacts[i].firstName == firstName) {

      if (contacts[i].hasOwnProperty(prop)) {
        return contacts[i][prop];
      } else {
        return "No such property";
      }

    }
  }
  return "No such contact";
but why couldn't i do return contacts[i].prop;? I had to do return contacts[i][prop];

@luisgra you would have to upload your json online somewhere so you can link it to your codepen
how many quotes are in the file?
Nitin Chandran Nair

Jan 08 2017 03:46

@khaduch - it’s on trial mode so it’ll ask for some captcha

like this?

Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Jan 08 2017 03:50
@vlpza - you still need the style attribute name there <p style=" font-size: 60px; line-height: normal; "><strong>TE LLEVAMOS AL NUEVO MUNDO DE LUZ.</strong></p> looks like it works when adding it through the devtools (actually using FireBug on FireFox.)
And take the style out of the <strong style> tag...
Valerie Lopez
@vlpza
Jan 08 2017 03:52
@khaduch going to try that now and see

@khaduch - So I just put:

<div id="587186ed86e6c094c88fe8e1" class="collection-desc"> <p style=" font-size: 60px; line-height: normal; "><strong>TE LLEVAMOS AL NUEVO MUNDO DE LUZ.</strong></p><p style=" font-size: 20px; ">La luz LED es nuestra pasión. Hey guys, I'm working on the Weather Report Project, and I'm having a problem.

Currently, I only have functions for getting current location and making an API call to the openweathermap API.

My problem is that the API call isn't working, although it was earlier. I didn't change anything. Could someone tell me problem? Here is my codepen: https://codepen.io/johnpyp/pen/QdbGeO?editors=1010

If you don't want to open up a codepen, here is the Javascript and HTML for this specific function:

function gettingWeather() {

@johnpyp - are you still there? I went and tried my (not yet completed) weather app, and I see that same woopra "payment required" message, I think that it is some kind of analytics provider, maybe the openweather site has to renew some contract? But I'm seeing that the weather data can be loaded, if I load the codepen page using the http:// link on FireFox. It will not work on Chrome because if you load via http:// on Chrome, it will not get the geolocation data. But if you load via https:// and get the geolocation data, then it will not allow the htp:// transaction for openweather. Sooooo - if you try it on FireFox, which still allows geolocation data on an http:// connection, then you can also get the wethaer.

function palindrome(str) {

I got an answer for it, var newStr = str.replace(/\W/g, '');
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Jan 08 2017 04:51
@Adam-Morris - you can use a pattern to match all non-word characters, which almost gets all of them. Word characters include 0-9, a-z, and the underscore _, so you can write an expression that will match all non-word characters plus the underscore with /\W|_/ for example, and use that in a .replace method. But you can probably do what you're trying to do if you just make a conditional test that matches the letters and numbers, although the regular expression is easier.
Adam Morris
@Adam-Morris
Jan 08 2017 04:51
what is /g again?
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Jan 08 2017 04:51
@Adam-Morris - it is "global" - to replace all matching characters, not just the first one that was found.

Jan 08 2017 04:51
Oh ok, i see.
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Jan 08 2017 04:52

Adam Morris

Jan 08 2017 04:53
shouldnt it be \/W/_\?
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Jan 08 2017 04:54
@Adam-Morris - in regular expressions, the | is an operator that means "or" - as in "match the non-word character OR the underscore". You can also write this as /[\W_]/g. which makes a group of the non-word metacharacter and the underscore, which will match either one at any character position. Again, you can try different combinations.

Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Jan 08 2017 04:59
@ssteph90 - now, if you mean that when you have the navbar collapsed and you click on the "hamburger" - which I just went back and saw that you meant that... you need to include this in your JS config panel - both the jquery.js, and the bootstrap.js code. Load them in that order, there are "Quick-add" links to fill them in for you. Jquery has to be first because bootstrap.js depends on it being there. Soooo - that should get your navbar to expand and collapse...

Just a question. var strArr = str.split(/ /); the / / is a regular expression?
for a space?
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Jan 08 2017 05:04
@Adam-Morris - it could be? Are you using that in some code? what does it do? It will probably just match a space, so it should be the same as " "?
Adam Morris
@Adam-Morris
Jan 08 2017 05:04
I'm using it to split a string into its words
Btw, can I do "abc".length and it will give me 3?
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Jan 08 2017 05:06

@Adam-Morris - probably more efficient to user str.split(' ') instead of regular expressions. Although maybe not noticeably different for a single case of running this code.

Yes, "abc".length should give you 3 as the answer. Because "abc" is a string constant.

I have an array of strings ["hello", "hey", "herro"] how would I split those strings into letters so the array becomes this: [["h","e","l","l","o"], ["h","e","y"], ["h","e","r","r","o"]] ?
I tried this but it isn't working:

function titleCase(str) {
  var strArr = str.split(/ /);

  for (var i = 0; i < strArr.length; i++) {
    strArr[i].split("");
  }

  return strArr;
}
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Jan 08 2017 05:24
@Adam-Morris - it's probably easiest to split the strings into an array of words, and then work with each word individually. You have to convert it to all lowercase (because they have some test cases with mixed-case letters) and then do something like convert the first letter to uppercase, and splice the last part of the word, concatenate the first letter and last part of the word and store it back into the array, and then at the end .join(' ') those modified words together.
@Adam-Morris - oh, and the reason why your code doesn't work is because string values are immutable, and that operation does not write the newly split string array back to the strArr array. If you really want to do that, you can probably do strArr[i] = strArr[i].split('');

I have a Bootstrap grid for my porfolio page but I cannot align centrally the thumbnails, although seems like straightforward to do it:
<div id="portfolio" class="row">
<h3>My Work</h3>
<div class="col-md-6 col-xs-12">
<a href="#">
<div id="project1" title="Project #1"></div>
</a>
<p>Sample Project #1</p>
</div>
<div class="col-md-6 col-xs-12">
<a href="#">
<div id="project2" title="Project #1"></div>
</a>
<p>Sample Project #2</p>
</div>
<div class="col-md-6 col-xs-12">
<a href="#">
<div id="project3" title="Project #1"></div>
</a>
<p>Sample Project #3</p>
</div>
<div class="col-md-6 col-xs-12">
<a href="#">
<div id="project4" title="Project #1"></div>

<p>Sample Project #4</p>

how do I update an html element attribute from javascript? I want to update the data-text in

with code from a string out of my JSON by way of a function

function myFunction (var1, var2) {

}

, but I cannot find a clear way to do this

@Mee0wth i would first load all the external bootstrap stuff. Then I would head over to the bootstrap site and copy their code for pieces you need. Like mentioned above, start with a navbar. Copy the navbar code and then adjust to how you see fit ( delete or add code ). Then just look at the example provided and the ones a few people provided here, and add your own flair to their pages.
Which will end up being your own page

Also, if you're up for an interesting read, here is a nice article I found on how someone converted theor React app to VanillaJS React to VanillaJS
I would say the React specific room is better. As I am sure you have noticed, a lot of the questions here are fairly "simple" in nature. Not trying to sound like an idiot, but seeing as how we are all at different levels, as one progresses, hopefully their quantity of questions decrease, at least until they have ran out of tests on their own ( I am also a beginner ). I also have not seen any ReactJS related questions in this room as of yet
And it would not take long for someone to look at an FCC example and help you, as one could look at FCC's projects without an account ( at least I think you can. I have always had an account )

Hello!

Is it possible to extend Class methods? I don't want to let method1 handle the other stuff that method2 does, for the sake of clarity and readability. Is copy pasting the only way here?

class MyClass {
    method1(arg1, arg2){
        // Do stuff.
    }

    method2(arg1, arg2){
        // Do stuff like method 1
        // Do other stuff.
    }
}

in your CSS, reduce the font-size of the text if you want it smaller

@shellsy515 or you can declare it like:

@LukeSallmen you will have anyway to deal with the nav menu for lower screens

@thenerdyouknow As a starting point you can set each element (buttons) with a unique ID [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9] which will represent the number, sign, operator...etc :D

How to Build a Personal Portfolio Webpage with the knowledge which has been given before this project ?
the demo project has a lot of functionality about which nothing has been taught
Tyler Moeller
@TylerMoeller
Jan 08 2017 21:31
@Adam-Morris Not sure if you got your question answered, but you can use .replace():
function removeCharacter(str, index) {
  return str.replace(str[index], '');
}
^^ One possible way anyway
@greenutkarsh At this point, you should have the basic knowledge to get started understanding the bootstrap docs, playing with the code in the docs, and seeing how it works so you can put everything together into a basic version of the demo portfolio project. It does have some functionality you'll better understand later, but at this point, try to get the basics working - you can always go back to it later and add more updates.

Need help with my Twitch status app. How do I determine if a channel doesn't exist? Looking at the console logs of the ajax data, there is no difference between a channel that is offline and a channel that has been closed or doesn't exist

@cryder9898 most people start here: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/API:Opensearch. That's the most basic way to use the API.
If you want to get more advanced, start here: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/API:Query and use the ApiSandbox they talk about in the article. You can add one parameter at a time and search for the parameter to learn more.

Hi guys! Personal Portfolio Project. I'm really trying to learn bootstrap and responsive design. I made a little hamburger menu at the top for small screen sizes, but it isn't visible. for the random quote machine and henceforth challenges do we require any kind of server to be up and files added to the server?
because i often get this error
```
XMLHttpRequest cannot load http://quotesondesign.com/wp-json/posts?filter[orderby]=rand&filter[posts_per_page]=1&callback=. The 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header has a value 'http://null' that is not equal to the supplied origin. Origin 'null' is therefore not allowed access.
how do i even test a simple load of json on my webpage?
Tyler Moeller
@TylerMoeller
Jan 08 2017 22:20
@cryder9898 OpenSearch gives you all the basics: title, URL, and the article extract. Query will give you pretty much everything else, but it will take a good hour or so to figure out the capabilities.
@ahollyer The easy way to get your button visible is to add the navbar-default class to your nav:
<nav id='header' class='navbar navbar-default navbar-fixed-top'>.
You'll have to adjust your CSS a bit to get the colors you want though
@grajsb If you use the code samples provided for that API at: https://quotesondesign.com/api-v4-0/, you should not be getting that error message. If you are, share your codepen and we can take a look.
To answer your question though - no, you don't require your own server for any of the front-end challenges.
@ebak123 by default the ajax calls will happen asynchronously so all the requests are queued/started straight away and then your final console.log happens before any of the requests return and your callbacks are run
@benny-bear for the purposes of learning you may not want to copy & paste too much
