@Code-of-the-noob
$(".quote").html(quote);
$(".by").html(aut);
should be inside ur callback function
getJSON is async, only place for sure u have data available is inside ur callback

Jan 18 2017 00:39
@Code-of-the-noob. @moigithub is right that those lines should be inside the callback function, but I found that by removing '$_jsonp=' from the url called by getJSON you will get the data.

Hey everyone, I am going back through my front-end projects to make them automatically resize for the device they are being viewed on, and am having trouble actually getting it to work. @relentless-coder I think that is totally normal; everyone is nervous in the beginning.

@joshchatfield I see this error in the console:
Mixed Content: The page at 'https://codepen.io/JoshChatfield/pen/OWbaxa' was loaded over HTTPS, but requested an insecure script 'http://api.forismatic.com/api/1.0/?method=getQuote&lang=en&format=jsonp&jsonp=jQuery3110512167537556014_1484709357088&_=1484709357092'. Anyone who's familiar with reduce want to take a look at this with me?
var arr = [
    [
        ['firstName', 'Joe'], ['lastName', 'Blow'], ['age', 42], ['role', 'clerk']
    ],
    [
        ['firstName', 'Mary'], ['lastName', 'Jenkins'], ['age', 36], ['role', 'manager']
    ]
]

arr.reduce(function(a,b){a[b[0][0]]=b[0][1]; return a},{})
what this is returning is only {firstName: Mary}, where I want it to return every property listed in the array in object format
I feel like I have to be close

trying a few html/css things out for one of the projects. I'm using Brackets. My HTML and JS are talkign to each other on a little alert test, but the actual code won't run. Does anyone know -is there a difference in the writing of JS in HTML <script> tags or should I be able to just copy/paste the code over (and remove the <script> tags)??
Tom
@moT01
Jan 18 2017 04:41
@megan32 copy the code to a file with a .js extension and link to it in a script tag
at the bottom of the html
<script src="project.js"></script>
Megan
@megan32
Jan 18 2017 04:43
Yep, I did both of those (and copied it into code pen where it works fine...)
the Dev tools error is this: Uncaught TypeError: Cannot set property 'onclick' of null
at changeHTMLstyle.js:4
but I checked the code and everything has id tags that match
Tom

@megan32 are you trying to link to the code you typed in brackets?
Megan
@megan32
Jan 18 2017 05:07
So, i wrote in brackets, then as it wasn't working copy/pasted to codepen to ask why
I'd like the brackets version to be working, but now the two won't connect at all..not sure how I further managed to make it unhappy
(the two --> html & css, NOT brakcets/codepen -I get these are totally separate)

hhmm, the script you have linked to in the html part needs the https or http:// address to get it
or if thats a script you wrote, you could just paste it striaght into the js section of codepen
Tom
@moT01
Jan 18 2017 05:12

@moT01 the hover transform effect its nice. i would concentrate on trying to make the cards same height. as a starter you can add height: 400px to .channel and a max-height: 250px; to .preview but you will have to rethink and align better all the elements inside. don't like very much this solution :)

Hello guys!
Going to ask some beginner questions
What do you use grids for in bootstrap? Is it the same thing as a table?
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jan 18 2017 09:08
yes @katsuya245126, except no one lays out things with tables anymore
tables should just be used to show data now, CSS can handle any type of layout you want
Sung Guk Lee
@katsuya245126
Jan 18 2017 09:10
Do you have to set the layout in the beginning or is it a hassle to change it later?
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jan 18 2017 09:14
you can change it whenever you want
but better to get an idea of how you want to position things first
draw up a mockup wouldn't hurt if you have several components to show

@arefinsaad did you try to declare the style in your css? are you sure that style even exists (not all fonts have all styles)?

what is the fastest way to understand a product's backend? it uses mongoDB and nodejs. I have joined as a front end developer, but I think it would be easier for me if I had some understanding of where the data is being sent, or how is data being stored.

Hello everyone :smile: Quick question, how do you center a div only when it reaches a breaking point on Bootstrap?
<div class="row">
    <div class="col-md-8 col-sm-8">
      <p>Say cool things here, make it a nice little paragraph</p>
    </div>
    <div class="col-md-4 col-sm-4">
      <img class="img-responsive" src="http://placehold.it/400x400" alt="Placeholder"/>
    </div>
  </div>
For example here, having the <img> or the <div class="col-md-4 col-sm-4"> to be centered once it collapses

@Sovember Use CSS media queries. Show the HTML with the image on smaller screens and show the HTML with the video on larger screens.

For example:

<div class="video">Video</div>
<div class="image">Image</div>

With CSS:

@media (max-width: 768px) {
  .video {
    display: none;
  }
}

@media (min-width: 769px) {
  .image {
    display: none;

@moT01 Would i have to implement any changes on my equal jquery object
how do i handle this issue when a user types -9+-9 on a calculator?
Tom
@moT01
Jan 18 2017 20:07
im not sure on your first question, ...the second should work itself out, ...the user hits 9, ...then +/- turns it to -9, then +, then 9 again and +/- again

Jan 18 2017 20:17

@moT01 I wanted to check what would display on the window when a user pressed the button '+/-'.

  $('#plus-minus').click(function(){
    var specialOpp = $(this).text();
    $('.display').val(specialOpp);
  })

it showed '+/-' how do I get it to only show "-"

Tom
@moT01

i'm getting a type error that false isn't a function
function whatIsInAName(collection, source) {
  // What's in a name?
  var arr = [];
  // Only change code below this line
  for (var i = 0; i < collection.length; i++) {
    arr.push(collection[i]);
  }

  function valCheck(arrOfObj, p) {
    return arrOfObj.hasOwnProperty(p) && arrOfObj.p == source.p;
  }

  for (var x in source){
    arr.filter(valCheck (arr, x));
    }

  // Only change code above this line
  return arr;
}

ur first loop is just duplicating the collection array ?
Lydia Larae
@nevaIsDreaming
Jan 18 2017 20:25
@moT01 yep. then i'm filtering things out of the copy of collection and returning the filtered array. at least that's what i'm trying to do with this code.

why all these codes in the example ? header#banner.navbar.navbar-default.navbar-fixed-top

Jan 18 2017 20:28
@nevaIsDreaming yea, that one was a little tricky if i remember, im relooking at it. not sure i had the best solution. could probly just go var arr = collection; for the first loop ?
@OlooAllaN your variable value should be exactly what you want displayed no? -9 ...cant just put that in there? ..well, if it works, sure

Jan 18 2017 20:32
@nevaIsDreaming where is x coming from
Lydia Larae
@nevaIsDreaming
Jan 18 2017 20:33
@moT01 x is the looping variable for the for in loop for looping through the properties in the source object
Tom
@moT01
Jan 18 2017 20:33
havent used a loop quite like that, ...yea that makes sense
Lydia Larae
@nevaIsDreaming
Jan 18 2017 20:34
@moT01 so I figured out that the call to valCheck wasn't right in the code, but now it's just returning the whole arr and the filtering part isn't happening at all. I suspect the problem is with the body of the valCheck function, but I'm not sure why. here's what the code looks like now
function whatIsInAName(collection, source) {
  // What's in a name?
  var arr = collection;
  // Only change code below this line

  function valCheck(arr, x) {
    return (arr.hasOwnProperty(x) && arrOfObj.x == source.x);
  }

  for (var x in source){
    arr.filter(valCheck);
    }

  // Only change code above this line
  return arr;
}
Tom

alright, ...ill open a pen and play with it a bit, ...no promises

@nevaIsDreaming
Jan 18 2017 20:39

but it didn't work. can anyone help me solve this, much appreciated
oh i solved it myself, i need to take out the height :800px; class . i see
Lydia Larae
@nevaIsDreaming
Jan 18 2017 20:47
@moT01 here is another problem i just caught. in the body of the second for loop it should be arr = arr.filter(valCheck); instead of arr.filter(valCheck); so that the changes to arr are actually saved to be returned later. but now the function just returns an empty array, so it seems like everything is getting filtered out with valCheck

Is there any way to edit a <blockquote> so that the vertical line to the left disappears?
Pieter Stokkink
@forkerino
Jan 18 2017 20:59
@nevaIsDreaming the .filter only has one argument passed to it, namely the value being examined.
You will need to check every item in the collection for all properties in source.
@joshuapsteele use css to set border-left to 0

@dgfrancisco I tried to change to 1% on the line 20 and seems to be having the same space visual. although the space is different if you put 10px but that's because of the small difference between units, I would suggest u to use percentage to retain the same size though
