Hey there! Working on my tribute page....have a several items in a list using<dl> trying to find a way to make 2 columns out of them. Here is an example of the list code: <dl>

<dd><img src="http://www.thehappyaccident.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/baseball.jpg" width="15" height="14">1923 against the New York Giants

<dd><img src="http://www.thehappyaccident.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/baseball.jpg" width="15" height="14">1927 against the Pittsburgh Pirates

<dd><img src="http://www.thehappyaccident.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/baseball.jpg" width="15" height="14">1928 against the St. Louis Cardinals I tried wrapping it with a div like <div style="width: 25%; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;">
<dl>
<dd>first item</dd>
<dd>second item</dd>
</dl>
</div> but with no luck...thoughts??

So I'm on the "Build a Tribute Page" step and I'm wondering if it is supposed to be a tribute to someone famous. Can it be a tribute to someone we know who

@zarruk becoz u did not clear interval correctly(before starting another one) so its running multiple times
u need to give an id that is returned by setInterval to clearInterval function but u were passing undefined. check u r clearInterval() calls

@zarruk Hi, I am looking at your code and although I don't have a clear idea yet, I noticed that inside your setInterval, between lines 104-121, you have a if condition that always runs (so it's useless) - is that your goal?
Laura Barluzzi
@laura-barluzzi
Feb 01 2017 00:49
@zarruk Sorry, I said it wrong. Vinay is right: you can clearInterval(variable) only if variable (in this case) is a return value identification of the setInterval you try to stop. So you need to simply add var interval = setInterval (etc) and than do clearInterval(interval) inside!

function chunkArrayInGroups(arr, size) {

  var array=[];
  for(var i=0;i<=arr.length;i=i+size){
    if(i+size<arr.length) array=arr.slice(i,i+size).push();
    else if(i+size>=arr.length) array=arr.slice(i).push();
  }

  return array;
}

chunkArrayInGroups(["a", "b", "c", "d"], 2);
If anybody got time, could u plz check my algorithm, for chunky monkey? Its supposed to split a array into smaller array of specified length, and the remainder into another array. I checked 5 times, at least. The result is weirdly 0.Why?

@johnnunns
Feb 01 2017 01:46
hey guys, my problem says I have to split a number into separate digits and then add all of them
function sumDigits(num) {
 var x = num.toString().split('').map(Number);
 return x.reduce(function(a,b){
     return b+a
 })
}

sumDigits(786)
so this code works, but it also needs to accomodate negative numbers
so if it was -786. it would need to add up to 7
not sure how to carry over the negative value to the .map(Number) method

Project Link

I'm using the class "center-block" to try and center the thumbnail, but it doesn't seem to be doing it for some reason, and I am wondering if I am using it correctly.

Previously, I was using class "col-md-offset-3" in a manner depicted below but found it adjusting poorly when the browser window was shrunk:

<div class="thumbnail img-responsive col-md-6 col-md-offset-3"><img class="img-responsive" src="https://libcom.org/files/imagecache/article/images/library/Picture%20of%20Noam%201960s.jpeg"> <div class="caption text-center">Noam Chomsky, MIT, 1960</div></div>

cgueste

Feb 01 2017 03:21
oh ok i thought we had to us an api. what do you recommend if i write them myself?
Michael Bomholt
@bomholtm
Feb 01 2017 03:22
if you write (copy/paste) them yourself you can store them in an javascript array
do you remember the js challenge to generate a random number?

@xemexpress - there is one post in the forum about the weather app, not sure if they mention the IOS vs Android differences? freeCodeCamp/freeCodeCamp#7853 and maybe this one, too: freeCodeCamp/freeCodeCamp#9145 - you can scan through those, if you haven't seen them, and see if they have any insight to offer? Basically, there are alternate sites to use that work with https:// which then allows the geolocation to work properly. Otherwise you can switch to use http://ip-api.com/json

Hey guys, I have a few questions about the twitch TV app. First off, here's my app. http://codepen.io/Bazill/pen/LbBQpZ
What I'm initially having trouble with is the API doesn't seem to have an entry for whether or not the user is online and in the user stories you're supposed to be able to know if a user is alone.
Lastly, I'm worried that the architecture for the app is all wrong. Do I need to rebuild this thing from scratch?

Hello.. I am still stuck here. When loaded the web, the console said "Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404 (Not Found)". Does this mean that I've done wrong with the getJSON()?

As I knew, getJSON(url, callBackFunc) is the format. I put the API Call from the OpenWeather into url. Am I wrong??

@xemexpress for start add http:// in the api link
like this
Stefan Langenborg
@slangenborg
Feb 01 2017 08:14
my api call won't go through with hhtp://
*http://
kirbyedy
@kirbyedy
Feb 01 2017 08:14
@slangenborg if you are using geolocation it wont work
Stefan Langenborg
@slangenborg
Feb 01 2017 08:15
?
why
kirbyedy
@kirbyedy
Feb 01 2017 08:15
you will get mixed content error
Stefan Langenborg
@slangenborg
Feb 01 2017 08:15
what causes that?
kirbyedy
@kirbyedy
Feb 01 2017 08:15
because geolocation requires secure https connection, and the api is unsecure http
so you either change the weather api or use ip location to get the users location
Stefan Langenborg
@slangenborg
Feb 01 2017 08:16
how do you use ip location? is that a built-in api?
kirbyedy
@kirbyedy
Feb 01 2017 08:16
both calls have to be either https or http
Stefan Langenborg
@slangenborg
Feb 01 2017 08:16
that makes sense, thank you
this one for example
Stefan Langenborg
@slangenborg
Feb 01 2017 08:17
oh so you do use an external api
perfect thanks
kirbyedy
@kirbyedy
Feb 01 2017 08:17
or you change to wunderground or darksky weather api which support secure connections
Stefan Langenborg
@slangenborg
Feb 01 2017 08:17
I was gonna use wunderground
but they want city names apparently
kirbyedy
@kirbyedy
Feb 01 2017 08:17
then you wont have a problem
hmmm are you sure ?
I think you can use latitude and longitude as well
let me check that, cause I made one of the weather apps with that api as well
xemexpress
@xemexpress
Feb 01 2017 08:18
@kirbyedy I just added http:// but still don't show the location
kirbyedy
@kirbyedy
Feb 01 2017 08:19
@slangenborg ah you have to use autoip.json
h1tag
@h1tag
Feb 01 2017 08:19
@xemexpress you need to put render() call inside getJSON()
h1tag
@h1tag
Feb 01 2017 08:20
@xemexpress because you're not passing it the object
put it inside the function that is inside getJSON
xemexpress
@xemexpress
Feb 01 2017 08:23
@fortMaximus why it can't be passed to a global variable??
h1tag
@h1tag
Feb 01 2017 08:24
@xemexpress I didn't notice that weatherData is a global var xD
I'm not sure why
maybe it has something to do with how getJSON works
kirbyedy
@kirbyedy
Feb 01 2017 08:27
@xemexpress you coordinats are not accesible to the function
Stefan Langenborg
@slangenborg
Feb 01 2017 08:27
$.getJSON("http://ip-api.com/json", function(val){
lat = Math.round(val.lat);
lon = Math.round(val.lon);
any idea why this is not going through?
kirbyedy
@kirbyedy
Feb 01 2017 08:28
they are out of the scope
Stefan Langenborg
@slangenborg
Feb 01 2017 08:28
the other api call now works
kirbyedy
@kirbyedy
Feb 01 2017 08:28
dont round the coordinates
Stefan Langenborg
@slangenborg
Feb 01 2017 08:28
the coordinates don't appear at all
kirbyedy
@kirbyedy
Feb 01 2017 08:28
leave them as they are, for the precision purpose
Stefan Langenborg
@slangenborg
Feb 01 2017 08:29
I just have that for now so I can test the later api call with the rounded values
do you know why this call isn't working?
xemexpress
@xemexpress
Feb 01 2017 08:31
@kirbyedyThe coords is declared in a global scope. Why the function lost access??
kirbyedy
@kirbyedy
Feb 01 2017 08:32
I guess that is a scoping problem
@slangenborg do you have a codepen link to that

@els007 It means that you can use any library to build your project. For example you can use jQuery for animation etc. You can add library on top left corner on settings, you have to pass a cdn link for a library that you want to use.

How do you build a JavaScript calculator? I have no idea where to start? How would the CSS position the buttons? How do I use Bootstrap to make it?

Feb 01 2017 15:12
Hey @playingwithinfinity do you know about bootstraps grid system?
playingwithinfinity
@playingwithinfinity
Feb 01 2017 15:20
@mcgowanc Yes.
But doesn't it take up the whole screen?
Master Builder
@McGowanC
Feb 01 2017 15:28
@playingwithinfinity not quite the whole screen, but also remember that the bootstrap grid is made up of 12 columns
so if you use the first 4 columns as blank space on the left, the middle 4 columns as the buttons on your calculator, and the last four columns as blank space on your right, you would have a calculator that sits right in the middle!
playingwithinfinity
@playingwithinfinity
Feb 01 2017 15:29
@mcgowanc Oh yeah!
Master Builder
@McGowanC
Feb 01 2017 15:29
are you building it in code pen?
playingwithinfinity
@playingwithinfinity
Feb 01 2017 15:30
But how can I specify I want my calculator to be built in the middle four parts?
And yes @mcgowanc
Master Builder
@McGowanC
Feb 01 2017 15:32
so I would first start out with trying to make one row in code pen
and just using some holder values
let me find the bootstrap grid syntax for you
playingwithinfinity
@playingwithinfinity
Feb 01 2017 15:33
@mcgowanc Here you go: http://codepen.io/jimpix/pen/zNNBZr
Master Builder
@McGowanC
Feb 01 2017 15:34
awesome!
so so far you have used up the first four columns in your bootstrap grid, right?
playingwithinfinity
@playingwithinfinity
Feb 01 2017 15:35
Yeah
How do I specify the middle four?
Master Builder
@McGowanC
Feb 01 2017 15:35
and those four columns are slotted in the first four slots for the 12
playingwithinfinity
@playingwithinfinity
Feb 01 2017 15:35
Yes.
Master Builder
@McGowanC
Feb 01 2017 15:35
what if we added a div column before your four ?
how wide would we want it to be for your button divs to take up the middle four? (spots 5 - 8)
playingwithinfinity
@playingwithinfinity
Feb 01 2017 15:36
Let me try.
Doesn't seem to work. http://codepen.io/jimpix/pen/zNNBZr
Master Builder
@McGowanC
Feb 01 2017 15:36
cool, so the hint is to just add one column in front of your four that you already wrote, but make it a certain width so it now takes oup the first four columns
playingwithinfinity
@playingwithinfinity
Feb 01 2017 15:37
That's what I did.
Master Builder
@McGowanC
Feb 01 2017 15:38
close! you want them all to be in the same row, what you just did was add another row with things in the first four columns
playingwithinfinity
@playingwithinfinity
Feb 01 2017 15:38
Why wouldn't that work?
They're empty rows?
Master Builder
@McGowanC
Feb 01 2017 15:39
one sec let me show you
I added some background color to each row you put in
so because you made a new div row in your html, your buttons now dropped to it's own row, where it again just taks up the first four columns
playingwithinfinity
@playingwithinfinity
Feb 01 2017 15:42
@mcgowanc That's not what I wanted.
Master Builder
@McGowanC
Feb 01 2017 15:42
no it's not!
what you want is for those two things to be next to each other
so instead of making a new row, put all your div col-xs-1 in the same row
that will put the red row next to the blue row
thus, pushing your buttons to the middle of the grid
playingwithinfinity
@playingwithinfinity
Feb 01 2017 15:43
Oh, I get it.
Master Builder
@McGowanC
Feb 01 2017 15:44
yeah!
so just keep them all contained in the same <div class=row>
playingwithinfinity
@playingwithinfinity
Feb 01 2017 15:44
Master Builder
@McGowanC
Feb 01 2017 15:44
BAM
playingwithinfinity
@playingwithinfinity
Feb 01 2017 15:44
But this seems ridiculously inefficient for some reason.
Master Builder
@McGowanC
Feb 01 2017 15:45
yeah, it's definitely annoying to set up your bootstrap grid the first time, but once you set it up it will stay responsive regardless of device
playingwithinfinity
@playingwithinfinity
Feb 01 2017 15:46
I don't mean annoying.
There's something about using this method that looks ugly.
Master Builder

@playingwithinfinity (and @mcgowanc too). With a calculator, I'd think you'd want the buttons to be the same size no matter how big or small the screen is. Bootstrap columns are responsive to the screen size.
playingwithinfinity
@playingwithinfinity
Feb 01 2017 16:21
@SkyCoder01 I want them to be closer to each other though.
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Feb 01 2017 16:22
With bootstrap, you make the screen smaller to make them closer to each other. It's a responsive framework.
@playingwithinfinity For example, override bootstrap and use this to see what I'm saying:
.col-xs-1 {
  width: 48px;
  height: 48px;
}
Master Builder
@McGowanC

Gulsvi

@orhalimi You can refer to the size of the visible space of the website through the vh unit --> 100vh in css is 100% of the height of the visible space, whereas 100vw represents 100% of the width of the visible space.

hey @philipp32, why don't you have a function that runs when the search button is pressed. The funcion then checks to see if anything is in the search box, if there is, a delete button will appear. Then have another function linked to the onclick of the delete button which will delete whatever is in the text box then set itself to hidden?

@adamgithub92 you should try to avoid using eval
there are other safer ways to do it, although it may be a little harder to write out

Hey there! I'm stuck on a thing... I've made styled navbar buttons in my Personal Portfolio Webpage, and now I need to know if there is some way to make the buttons in the navbar appear "active" or "pressed" when clicked and while navigating the current page. Could anyone help me with that, please? Is that a JS issue? Here is the page: http://codepen.io/viniciuscrw/full/GjVZGZ/

you could fork the project @theunmanifested, but better option would be to work locally and use a version control system like git

Hi, Ihave question about navigation menu in bootstrap. I don't understand why in mobile view menu button becomes very big? http://codepen.io/komatalib/pen/egVKQq what I missed?
Sabrina Ferguson
@itsacoyote
Feb 01 2017 21:47
@komatalib for some reason it's adding in the spaces you've got hiding around the <span class="icon-bar">'s you have in the button
Did you use spaces to tab things out? I'd suggest backspacing to remove all spaces between elements in the navbar-toggle and then use enter and tab to format things

someone wanna tell me what's wrong with this? Its for the tribute page its just java script because I want to make it so that each time you click the button something random will happen but first I need this to work and then I will do the function for that.
document.getElementsByTagName("h1")[0].style.fontSize = "80px";
document.getElementById("FamousQuotes").onclick=function() {famousQuotesF};
function famousQuotesF() {
alert("See if this works.");
}

@Jonnycakes93 I would reccomend you to experiment to design your page inside a "well" or "jumbotron"(by putting the body under a <div class="jumbotron">, for example). That makes the page looks better and does not require CSS for adjustments.
