@nikkilr88 what's the issue?
Nikki L.R.
@nikkilr88
Feb 03 2017 00:06
@karpimpski Well, I do have it working, but I wanted to change it so instead of the sidebar moving, the content of the page shifts over.
I just can't get it to work without messing up my whole page.
taltmann42
@taltmann42
Feb 03 2017 00:08
@nikkilr88 so, you want the content to be pushed to the left when the sidebar opens?
Nikki L.R.
@nikkilr88
Feb 03 2017 00:09
I tried putting everything except the sidebar in a new div with a class of 'content', changed the css and the script but nothing.
@taltmann42 Exactly
taltmann42
@taltmann42
Feb 03 2017 00:10
okay let me see
Michael Karpinski
@karpimpski
Feb 03 2017 00:10
@nikkilr88 I think you would need JavaScript for that
Nikki L.R.
@nikkilr88
Feb 03 2017 00:10
<script>
    $('.menubars').on('click', function() {

  $('.content').toggleClass('movecontent');

});

    </script>
That is what I am playing around with.... I have everything in a div, have the css and this script
Michael Karpinski
@karpimpski
Feb 03 2017 00:11
that's exactly what I would do, yeah
Nikki L.R.
@nikkilr88
Feb 03 2017 00:11
movecontent is suppose to change it to "margin-right: 75px;"
taltmann42
@taltmann42
Feb 03 2017 00:12
@nikkilr88 try using "transform: translateX(-10px)"
also, the <center> tag is deprecated ;)
Michael Karpinski
@karpimpski
Feb 03 2017 00:12
that may be the issue. try implementing absolute positioning on your parent element if what @taltmann42 said doesn't work out
I would make the .content position absolute, and set left: -30px or something like that
@nikkilr88 beside the point of your issue, that is a really beautiful site. how did you write that?
taltmann42
@taltmann42
Feb 03 2017 00:15

as far as I understand, the content of the page is in the center tags. You can give them a class, e.g. realcontent, and toggleClass them with shifted.

The CSS for it:

.realcontent{
  transform:translateX(0);
  transition: tranform 0.5s; //adjust timing to sidebar animation duration
}
.realcontent.shifted{
  transform:translateX(-75px);
}
okay just tested, it that seems to work
Michael Karpinski
@karpimpski
Feb 03 2017 00:19
cool, definitely do that @nikkilr88! personal opinion, I think the way you currently have it looks nicer but that's just personal preference
Nikki L.R.
@nikkilr88
Feb 03 2017 00:19
Sorry! I was just trying to remove all of the center tags... hahaha. Let me go back and read all of the messages.

@nikkilr88 you're welcome :thumbsup:
@RehabThis when you rightclick on an element and click "Inspect Element", (assuming you use chrome), You can see all applied styles to that element. There was a border-left from type.less. I don't see you including that, so maybe it's some kind of CSS injected by codepen itself
@RehabThis okay that's a css-file from bootstrap, so that's the culprit

@remdata a good way to start would build the basic structure of how your content will fall on the page
Karthik Nallasivan
@furball514
Feb 03 2017 02:59
@remdata create empty divisions to display ur data
Use bootstrap to arrange them into rows and columns
Create a couple of radio buttons to toggle between hide and show
Use the users array given in FCC
Use a bunch of if else statements
Read the API documentation
There'll be three columns
Logo
Current stream
And status

Hi. I can’t seem to get this program to run. I’m on the JSON APIs and Ajax: Get JSON with the JavaScript XMLHttpRequest Method exercise and it almost seemed like I had to replicate the piece of code already mentioned in the problem statement, but I’m stuck somehow and can’t figure out what’s wrong.
<script>
  document.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded',function(){
    document.getElementById('getMessage').onclick=function(){
      // Add your code below this line
       var req = new XMLHttpRequest();
      req.open('GET', '/json/cats.json', true);
      req.send();
      req.onload = function()  {
       var json = JSON.parse(req.responseText);
        document.getElementsByClassName('message')[0].innerHTML = JSON.stringify(json);
      };

      // Add your code above this line
    };
  });

@FL8Liew Your social media buttons are in list elements "<li>". A quick fix would be putting them in the same <li>

<li>
<a class="button social" href="https://twitter.com/fl8liew" target="_blank"><i class="fa fa-fw fa-twitter"></i></a>
<a class="button social" href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100014970882131" target="_blank"><i class="fa fa-fw fa-facebook"></i></a>
</li>

But in the future, only use <li> element when you are actually listing things. Just use div for most things.

Marc Bernardoni
@morifenDev
Feb 03 2017 10:26
@shivanksharma91 nope, it's little bit complcate. Each section of your site (header, section ... ) must have a class "row" and be nested by a div with the class "container-fluid'.
@shivanksharma91 For exaemple:
<header>
  <div class="container-fluid">

@shivanksharma91 container is responsive too, it just resizes at breakpoints (certain fixed widths) and adds extra space on the sides to make everything fit. container-fluid will constantly resize, which may or may not be what you want.
Shivank Sharma
@shivanksharma91

@RationalCoding can you elaborate on adding extra spaces to sides?
alpox
@alpox
Feb 03 2017 10:37
@shivanksharma91 Bootstraps container class sets the width of the content to an exact value with the sizes described here:
blob
So you see that there will be some space added to both sides. container-fluid makes the container size 100% all time.

@bikalkhawas Oh yes, I found the problem.
Since you're prepending the search results, you should be iterating from length of the array
var i = 0; i < data[1].length; i++ should be var i = data[1].length; i >= 0; i--
This should solve your problem!

You need to actually call the getWeatherIcon(id) function.
After the var icon;
var icon;
getWeatherIcon(id);
You also need to add icon = to a few of your case statements.
And that should fix the problem.
Hope that helps!

http://codepen.io/PipsChips/pen/XpExwL
Tony
@FreakishLancer
Feb 03 2017 13:16
Yes, just write it as if you were writing a Reddit post or an article. Then afterwards, you can look through it and see which sections need the right HTML tags and styling.
@PipsChips It should be a GET request
I also recommending shortening the URL. a lot of the api request parameters have default values.
You should be using the Open Search action.
PipsChips
@PipsChips
Feb 03 2017 13:20
Hi! I tried with 'GET'. Didn't work... :)
Look at the URL of that request and see if you can change it to fit your needs.
And then you can shorten it to this: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=opensearch&search=<SEARCHTERM>
and add any other parameters you want afterwards.
Oh yeah, one important thing I forgot, you're supposed to put the URL in url: [url] after the brace.
  $.ajax({
    url: [url], // Your request with the searchTerm variable here.
    dataType: 'jsonp',
    success: function(data) {
      consoloe.log(data);
    }
  });
PipsChips

well, I took that URL from MediaWiki. I tought I can make my viewer as a serch input (of course) with dropping (articles) list (every list containing thumbnail img and info/description).

Good morning, could use some help on my weather app. I have given up with geolocation due to my browser not asking for my location. I have opted instead to use a text input for zip code. Some strange behavior occurs though. Without the <form> tags, the site works as intended, but with them, it will flash the correct weather for a sec, then reload the page. I'm pretty new to forms, what am I missing?

@kevharvell You need to prevent your form from submitting when you click the submit button. in JS you do that by returning false when the submit button is clicked. I have forked your pen with the solution http://codepen.io/clydelobo/pen/GrdyaV?editors=1010

@volkranium I don't fully understand your question but it's totally ok to have your structure like so

<body>
   <div>one...</div>
   <div>two...</div>
   <div>three..</div>
   <div>and so on</div>

</html>
you can have a million divs if you want

@volkranium yes you can use divs only in the body. same for every other element that actually shows something on the page. the head section is just for meta-data, CSS-references and the title (in rare cases also JS)

taltmann42
@taltmann42
Feb 03 2017 14:40
nope, that's probably related to this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halting_problem

Heyo everybody. I'm working on the random quote machine project. For some reason my API call was working when I last used it, nothing has really changed on the project since, and when I called it today I'm getting nothing. Can I get some advice as to what's happening here?
Evan
@EvanDCP
Feb 03 2017 16:51
same thing happens to me, @Ctiller93
same code but it shows no quote at all
what's going on? did the json quotes API stop working or something?

It might be an http/https sort of thing.

Aaaaaand now it works I guess. :x

I need to find some reading for this API stuff. I still don't fully get it even after getting my javascript together for this project.
Is your call for the API pretty much the same as mine, or...?
Evan
@EvanDCP
Feb 03 2017 17:00
it's the exact same one that's why I don't get it, but yeah API's are so difficult to grasp lol
ok works now
i got rid of the crossorigin beforehand

Hey all, I'm on the "Understand String Immutability" lesson of the JS module, and maybe my code is wrong but I can't progress to the next lesson. This is the lesson code:

//Setup
var myStr = "Jello World";

// Only change code below this line

myStr[0] = "H"; // Fix Me

And here is my solution:

//Setup
var myStr = "Jello World";

// Only change code below this line

myStr[0] = "J"; // Fix Me

I still can't pass the lesson, also the comment "Only change code below this line" makes me think that I shouldn't change the value of var myStr. Or maybe there's a bug in the lesson?

var str = 'To be, or not to be, that is the question.';
var count = 0;
var pos = str.indexOf('e');

while (pos !== -1) {
  count++;
  pos = str.indexOf('e', pos + 1);
}

console.log(count); // displays 4
I am confused as to how this while loop works. The condition is that if pos returns -1, meaning there is no "e" in str. But str.indexOf('e'); means the function will search through the entire str for "e", and there are four of them. So the loop will never run?
