it can be both, but generally where the final value is set
so if you want to do a transition on an element when you hover, you want to add the transition styles in the hover selecter
for example
a:hover {transition-property: background-color, color;
transition-duration: 1s;
transition-timing-function: ease-out;}

Thanks Vincent!
In case I set it in the class where the initial value is set, will it still work?
and what if I set it in both the classes?
@donofriov Thanks!

i believe it will actually work in the initial class but it will happen on load and not on a specific action
i actually haven’t used transitions that much so I’d have to play around with it, but add it to the initial class, then add it to the final class, then add to both and see what happens :)

how do i insert something into a stylesheet that im adding to the page after its loaded?
jQuery('._div').css({"left": jQuery('#page_container').offset().left, "top": "124px"})
however im more after wanting to use this method
    var myDiv = '<style type="text/css">'+
    '    ._div {'+
    '        left:'+jQuery('#page_container').offset().left+';'+
    '        top: 124px;'+
    '    }'+
    '</style>'+
    '<div class="_div">'+
    '</div>';

    jQuery('body').prepend(myDiv);

Template literals make this much easier:
$('body').prepend(
  `<style type="text/css">
     ._div {
       left: ${$('#page_container').offset().left};
       top: 124px;
     }
   </style>
   <div class="_div"></div>;`
);

no luck @SkyCoder01 it just asigns left as nan
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Feb 28 2017 00:56
@SimeonCodes do you have a link to the code? Maybe need to debug why this is NaN: $('#page_container').offset().left
Simeon
@SimeonCodes
Feb 28 2017 00:56
page has fully loaded, and calling that seperately in console host returns a number
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Feb 28 2017 00:57
Assign it to a variable and use the variable instead perhaps?
And if the #page_container is dynamically generated, need to do the .prepend() afterward
Simeon
@SimeonCodes
Feb 28 2017 01:01

using a variable kind of worked, left is assigned the correct number but its appears at the very left of the page, might just recheck the rest of the code and try again.

thanks for your help

Hey guys, I'm planning on creating my own mobile game app similar to candy crush, but with more of an rpg adventure game element to it. Since i'm primarily trained in front end dev, should I try to create my own game graphics or should I use free stock graphics found online for my game?
Larry Hawkins
@HawkinsLJ
Feb 28 2017 01:34
@AmitP88 depending on your skillset, you may want to fund the development. otherwise, it may never get off the ground
Amit Patel
@AmitP88
Feb 28 2017 01:36
@HawkinsLJ well I mean, this game is mostly to help me get a dev job, but I still want to eventually launch it on Google Play store after completion. I'm not sure if I can afford to fund it since I don't make much money, but I'll see. I found this site for graphic sprites https://www.thegamecreators.com/product/appgamekit-giant-asset-pack-2 but I don't know if I should use it (the site says that the graphics can be used for for-profit games legally, so no issue there)

how do i align everything in the body of my html to be in the middle of the page using bootstrap
Pieta Honkakoski
@Bellorosa
Feb 28 2017 07:25
@Aoladapo you could try a combination of text-align:center and margin: 0 auto
also using columns give you automatic responsiveness so you don't really have to do anything else
also if you're centering a text area, it's wise to wrap it in a container instead of a container-fluid
that way your text remains readable in bigger screen sizes

Code pen wont just navigate your computer
unless you uploaded the image to codepen
it doesn't know what the hell you're talking about when you say "starman.jpg"
It can surf the web if you use a URL in the place of star man
if you were using an offline webbuilding framework, and putting in the folder location.. like C//:images/mywork/starman.jpg or what ever
then it might work
is porcupine.png working?
if it is, then you are doing it right and I don't know what's wrong

@urbutisj This seems to work well:

#languages i {
  border-left: 2px solid #80cea6;
  padding-left: 5px;
  height: 1.5em;
  line-height: 1.5em;
}

Adjust height as desired and make line-height = height so it is vertically centered.

The idea is to use the border on the text rather than the <a> tag

Icah Banton
@remdata
Feb 28 2017 18:11
@veredrec . Yes.
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Feb 28 2017 18:11

@remdata You are using absolute position on the content inside the columns, so they basically have nothing in them and 0 height as a result. To debug, add this (temporarily) to your CSS:

.col-xs-8 {
  border: 1px solid blue;
}

.col-xs-2 {
  border: 1px solid red;
}

.col-xs-4 {
  border: 1px solid green;
}

You'll see your .col-xs-4 classes look right, but your .col-xs-8 and .col-xs-2 are just lines - columns with no height.

Icah Banton
@remdata
Feb 28 2017 18:12
@Aloap . I was using bootstrap v4 and then switched it t version 3. It worked for about an hour and then it stopped.
@SkyCoder01 . I tried it but that did not work.
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Feb 28 2017 18:17
@remdata Adding those borders are a tool for debugging your own CSS, I haven't given you a fix
You will need to look at each property you are using in your CSS, especially position: absolute to fix the problem.
Icah Banton
@remdata
Feb 28 2017 18:23
@SkyCoder01 . Okay. I do belive i am specfying height for my elements inside .cols-xs-8. Do i need to do this for .colx-2 also?
@SkyCoder01 . I guess I don't understand what is happening here?
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Feb 28 2017 18:27
@remdata Yes, you gave a height to those elements, but with absolute positioning, they are not positioned inside those columns.
Remove position: absolute and the z-index proerties from your #display and #calctitle elements to see how it changes
And, to be honest, it seems that using bootstrap for this might end up working against you.
Bootstrap is mainly useful for the grid system, but you'll only need one large rectangle for the calculator body, with a display window rectangle inside, and a bunch of buttons below that - which will all have static size.
Icah Banton
@remdata
Feb 28 2017 18:35
@SkyCoder01 , thanks. I thought I could use z-index to show my display and buttons over /inside the calculator, I guess that approach won't work.

Originaly i was using container thats why ull see a background, but now i decided to stretch with container fluid for better view on bigger screen but the empty space on the right just wont go away.https://codepen.io/Pagnito/pen/dvooZO?editors=1100

Does it only have the blue space on the right in Codepen? If you pull it up on your machine is that area there also?

Reason I ask, I looked at the Codepen link and using Chrome Dev Tools it appeared to me that an iFrame element was kicking it out to the right a few pixels

@Pagnito Remove this CSS:

.container {
  padding: 0;
  /*takes padding from inside elements to even out the widths and stretch on small screen*/
}
.container-fluid {
  padding:0;
}

And close your first container div before container-fluid2 starts. Containers can't be nested.

Containers need the padding that bootstrap gives them because rows have -15px margins on each side, so your .row classes are overflowing the sides of the page

Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Feb 28 2017 19:29
@Pagnito On line 27, you start a new .container-fluid
But you probably want to choose between having one .container or .container-fluid for the whole page or multiple ones.
.container makes the content narrower than .container-fluid and gives it a maximum width.

Hi friends, I am making my first tribute page in codepen, I have added a chunk of text - is it possible to justify blocks of text in html, within a div?

I'm building the random quote machine but I'm getting a weird interaction when I'm creating my tweet button: when I add the bootstrap class "btn-primary" it creates three buttons around my page with the same reference). http://codepen.io/kyang321/pen/NpPWXG?editors=1010
@sandersholto You can add the "text-justify" class to your div if you're using bootstrap

The sample they have given as an example is so advanced and complex.
There are codes which I haven't even seen.

I'm struggling with something that feels like it ought to be simple. I am probably going to kick myself...
Let's say I have an array like this:

var fruits = [apple, banana, cherry, date];

I want to separate each value out of the starting array, and set it up in its own new array, which I can later .push more values to. I want the new arrays to be named sequentially, eg. fruit0, fruit1, fruit2, fruit3. I thought I would be able to do this using a for loop and template literals, like this:

for (i=0; i<fruits.length; i++) {
  var fruit${i} = [fruits[i]];
}

But it doesn't work. The error I'm getting is Unexpected token {. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Or can you suggest a better way to solve this problem?

@IvesNoIdea browser or nodejs ?
@IvesNoIdea replace global by window if js is executing in the browser
let fruits = ["apple","banana", "cherry", "date"];

for (let i=0; i < fruits.length; i++) {
  global[`fruit${i}`] = [fruits[i]];
}
@IvesNoIdea you can access you new arrays by their names fruit0 fruit1 etc
Adel
@AdelMahjoub
Feb 28 2017 22:30
@IvesNoIdea if you don't to use global or window, you can add your wanted arrays as properties to an object
let fruits = ["apple","banana", "cherry", "date"];

let fruitsObject = {}
for (let i=0; i < fruits.length; i++) {
  fruitsObject[`fruit${i}`] = [fruits[i]];
}
//you'll have the following
fruitsObject
{
  fruit0: [ 'apple' ],
  fruit1: [ 'banana' ],
  fruit2: [ 'cherry' ],
  fruit3: [ 'date' ]
}

Anyone familiar with bootstrap panels have any advice on how to have the panel headings horizontally in a row instead of vertically aligned. I can force their positioning but that tends to mess with how the panels look as well. Any help is greatly appreciated, I can link the codepen if needed.

can anyone tell me why my caption is not connecting to image? Just sitting underneath?

it’s supposed to sit underneath by default. It really depends how the styling you have. Probably something to do with padding or margin
:grin:
