Apr 06 2017 00:25
Random quote machine?
Roger Castro
@castro2487
Apr 06 2017 00:25
yes
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 00:25
Same
Roger Castro
@castro2487
Apr 06 2017 00:31
it's a little frustrating
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 00:37
Yeah
I have no idea how to repeat different quotes...
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 00:43
@MathematicsCoding you could use Math.random(); that you learned before
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 00:46
Where am I supposed to add that?
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 00:46
apply it to your quotes
what do you have so far?
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 00:47
Well I had two but only after it works..
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 00:48
how are you writing the quotes?
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 00:48
$(document).ready(function() {
    $("#getMessage").on("click", function(){
      $(".message").html("Mistakes are always forgivable, if one has the courage to admit them. - Bruce Lee" );
    });
    });
Do you need to see my html code?
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 00:48
is that all you have?
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 00:49
I could add more if I know how to repeat different quote..
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 00:49
you can put all your quotes in an array and loop through them
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 00:49
Ah
I will try that
So I have to remove that code then?
Just
$(".message").html("Mistakes are always forgivable, if one has the courage to admit them. - Bruce Lee" );
    });
Honestly? I dont where to add for loop... Im new to codepen
Inside these document function?
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 00:51
you can just comment your code for later use
you can write your javascript in there
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 00:51
okay
So I need to create new functoin?
function
$(document).ready(function(NAME HERE?)
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 00:53
you can make an array inside the $(document).ready(function(){ });
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 00:53
So I dont need for loop?
Oh never mind I thought you meant something like $(document).ready(function() {array} { });
So I need to add new var for array?
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 00:55
why don't you try it first
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 00:55
Yeah I was about to..
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 00:56
you know how to make an array right?
and you know how to call it?
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 00:57
Ok full JS code
$(document).ready(function() {
  var myArray = ['Mistakes are always forgivable, if one has the courage to admit them. - Bruce Lee', 'My yesterdays walk with me. They keep step, they are gray faces that peer over my shoulder. - Author Golding']
  for (var i = 0; i<myArray.length; i++) {
    return myArray;
}
    });

https://codepen.io/bazita/details/XMQdem/
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 01:02
okay. how do you update the html in jquery? @MathematicsCoding
@MathematicsCoding use console.log() to see your myArray
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 01:04
Nothing show up
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 01:05
$(document).ready(function() {
    $("#getMessage").on("click", function(){
      $(".message").html("Mistakes are always forgivable, if one has the courage to admit them. - Bruce Lee" );
    });
    });
try to combine this with your array
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 01:07
Well I got another idea..
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 01:09
You can also use a quote api if you don't want to hardcode the quotes.
Karan Nandha
@karann7
Apr 06 2017 01:27
if anyone here wants to do a node.js, passport.js auth course in the next 20-30 minutes i will be broadcasting one on google hangouts
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 01:30
I know its not random quote machine but what do you think?
I edited alittle so restart it again
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 01:33
  var quote=["keys"];
  $("#quote1").on("click", function(){
      $(".quote1").html(quote);

    });
you can do this also @MathematicsCoding
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 01:34
What for?
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 01:35
you can make an array of quotes and call it
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 01:35
Oh any quotes in instead of "keys"?
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 01:35
this calls the quote in the array
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 01:35
So return then?
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 01:35
i made and array called quote and i'm calling it on the click function
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 01:36
oooh I get it how it work
I think..
 var quote=["Any quote?"];
  $("#quote1").on("click", function(){
      $(".quote1").html(quote);
return quote;
    });
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 01:36
does it work on you codepen?
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 01:37
No I have not test it
So I can add more than one quote in that array?
Then add for loop? to return different quote step by step?
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 01:38
you can
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 01:38
So If I want to add for loop then I'd have to put i<quote.length;
Or function?
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 01:39
try it out first
try out my code on your codepen
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 01:39
I dont wanna mess up... I will test it on IDE
Okay
I meant to save old code on my IDE just in case

Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 01:45
yo

$(document).ready(function() {
  var quote=['In order to succeed, we must first believe that we can.', 'Turn your face to the sun and the shadows fall behind you.', 'The exhaustion of old age is something people who are younger don\'t fully appreciate.', 'I\'d rather learn from one bird how to sing than teach ten thousand stars how not to dance.', 'Tough times don\'t last, tough people do, remember?'];
  $("#quote1").on("click", function(){
      $(".quote1").html(quote);
    return quote[0];
    });
    });
Why dont it return just arr[0]?
oh its one array... never mind

$(document).ready(function() {
  var quote=[['In order to succeed, we must first believe that we can.'], ['Turn your face to the sun and the shadows fall behind you.'], ['The exhaustion of old age is something people who are younger don\'t fully appreciate.'], ['I\'d rather learn from one bird how to sing than teach ten thousand stars how not to dance.'], ['Tough times don\'t last, tough people do, remember?']];
  $("#quote1").on("click", function(){
      $(".quote1").html(quote);
    return quote[0];
    });
    });
Still...
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 01:48
html(quote[0]) this code makes it show up on your page
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 01:48
oh
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 01:49
return quote will not show up
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 01:49
Why html?
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 01:50
google jquery html and read it
also research what return and console.log() does
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 01:50
I deleted return and same thing show up
Return does nothing
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 01:52
$(".quote1").html(quote[0]); return will not make it show up
you need to research what i told you
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 02:02
Oh no...
I created a loop and I think its crashing my browser...
I had to reload and that loop is gone..
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 02:07
So it only return last array...
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 02:08
how do you write an array?
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 02:08
[]
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 02:08
what's in your array?
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 02:09
Finally I figured it out
Now I can pick any array
So I just have to add loop..
then add i to arr[i]
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 02:11
is your arr like this? arr=["a", "b", "c"]
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 02:12
Yes exactly
No my bad..
[[a],[b],[c]]
$(document).ready(function() {
  var arr= ([['A'], ['B'], ['C']]);
  $("#quote").on("click", function(){
    for (var i = 0; i<arr.length; i++)
      $(".quote").html(arr[i]);
    });
});
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 02:14
var fruits = ['Apple', 'Banana'] an array looks like this
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 02:14
Then I cant just pick apple..
Oh I guess I was wrong
Either works?
$(document).ready(function() {
  var arr = ['A', 'B', 'C'];
  $("#quote").on("click", function(){
    for (var i = 0; i<arr.length; i++)
      $(".quote").html(arr[0]);
    });
});
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 02:16
your way has () around and array that is nested in another array
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 02:16
When I put arr[i] it only return last string
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 02:17
do you know what the for loop does?
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 02:18
Yea?
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 02:18
if you want it to change random
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 02:19
How do I do that?
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 02:19
you can add math.random to your array index
combine math.random and the indexes
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 02:19
arr[math.random] like that?
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 02:19
look up how to use math.random
im trying to not give you the answer
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 02:20
....
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 02:20

Apr 06 2017 02:40
Did you save it?
maxblanch
@maxblanch
Apr 06 2017 02:40
yes
I mean, I changed to height, and background-size to fit whatever screen the user will have
So I can't change de img size itselft...
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 06 2017 02:42
Hm...
I forgot how..
How to change image size
Just figure it out how then that will solve your problem..
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 02:44
@maxblanch there's padding in your container-fluid
maxblanch
@maxblanch
Apr 06 2017 02:45
@jtan3 How can I remove this when using bootstrap cdn ?

Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 02:49
you should see padding-left/right: 15px;
in your css you can just make.container-fluid{ padding: 0; }
@maxblanch
maxblanch
@maxblanch
Apr 06 2017 02:51
@jtan3 Ok ! You're right, when I unchecked the css property, and appeared fine.
@jtan3 But, my own css will over-run bootstrap css ?
Johnny
@jtan3
Apr 06 2017 02:51
@maxblanch using the devtools helps with the styling
@maxblanch it shouldn't. I think container-fluid adds its own padding. You need to research that because I'm not sure.
maxblanch
@maxblanch
Apr 06 2017 02:53

@reliktus for bs3 or bs4, I went with bs4 for freecodecamp projects (with this as a reference sheet: https://hackerthemes.com/bootstrap-cheatsheet/). For professional / side projects, I'd go with bs3 as it is — for the moment at least — very documented, supported, with a huge community.

Tayeb B.
@tasinttttttt
Apr 06 2017 12:39
@reliktus for the API calls, in your 'for' loop, you try to add things that are not strings to your html, hence the undefined output, you could JSON.stringify(json[key].title) for example
h1tag
@h1tag
Apr 06 2017 12:40
there was no error
relikt
@reliktus
Apr 06 2017 12:40
dont know why right know

like this?: for (var key in json) { html_data += "<div class=><h2>" + JSON.stringify(json[key].title) + "</h2>" + JSON.stringify(json[key].extract) + "</div>"; }
relikt
@reliktus
Apr 06 2017 12:41
yeap
without stringyfy
Tayeb B.

Apr 06 2017 12:41
@reliktus so you want to achieve this without stringify?
relikt
@reliktus
Apr 06 2017 12:42
i dont need it
i need the val of the json only
dont want to stringify them
Tayeb B.
@tasinttttttt
Apr 06 2017 12:43
@reliktus well if you want to add the values to html, you have to stringify it at some point

Apr 06 2017 12:43

Guys how can you underline text when hovering, I tried everything

<span id="x">X</span>

#x.underline {
  text-decoration: underline;

$("document").ready(function() {

   $("#x").hover(function(){
     $("#x").toggleClass("underline");
   });
});
}

I noticed I have this font size working... but not the cursor attr??

#x, #o {
  font-size: 1.5em;
  cursor: pointer;
}

also not working:

$("#x").hover(function(){
     $("#x").css("font-size", "1.6em");
   });
relikt
@reliktus
Apr 06 2017 12:43
@tasinttttttt maybe your right
but diidnt do that and it works
Tayeb B.
@tasinttttttt
Apr 06 2017 12:44
@reliktus if you don't want to append the values directly, you have to stringify each value and put them in an array, and then append the array values to html
@reliktus so your problem is solved then? :)
relikt
@reliktus
Apr 06 2017 12:44
@tasinttttttt i know what You want me to say
but i think it works without that
i only use stringify to get the clear api json to see it while programing

just one more think im done

@daUnborn from this code:

function call_api_chuck () {
    $.ajax({
      url: "http://api.icndb.com/jokes/random",
      jsonp: "callback",
      type: "GET",
      dataType: "jsonp",
      success: function (data) {
        $("#author").remove();
        $("#quote").append(data["value"]["joke"]);
      },
      xhrFields: {
        withCredentials: false
      }
    });
  };

the link that you should be using in your getJSON() is this one: http://api.icndb.com/jokes/random
you should also add https://crossorigin.me prefix to it like this: https://crossorigin.me/http://api.icndb.com/jokes/random , read the explanation on why should add the crossorigin on this page: https://deixapaso.wordpress.com/2015/11/03/wrapping-http-content-into-https-via-ajax-request-in-codepen/

ah this answers my question about why it works for me (locally) lol:

If a feature is powerful and not available on HTTP, and you are a developer that needs to keep testing a feature on a server that does not have a valid certificate, you have several options:
localhost is treated as a secure origin over HTTP, so if you're able to run your server from localhost, you should be able to test the feature on that server.

@SkyCoder01 Ah I see. the bottom line here is if I want to use the OWM API I have to use an insecure locator (IP based) from the list you suggested. If I want to use the navigator locator I have to use a different (secure) API?
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Apr 06 2017 17:49
@ruken You are using Bootstrap 3 classes, but you have Bootstrap 4 added to your codepen. Also, curly quotes: ”like these” don't work well in code, better to use straight quotes "like these" instead. That's why your image doesn't load correctly I think, as Jorge pointed out.
@the-vampiire Yes, correct.

Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Apr 06 2017 17:51
I think in general, it's best to use three APIs, navigator.geolocation, an insecure location API like ipinfo.io, and a secure Weather API. Then you can support both HTTP and HTTPS in all browsers @the-vampiire
IP-based locators can be very inaccurate - for example, if you use a VPN or over a cellular connection where your cellular tower is in another city
Vamp
@the-vampiire
Apr 06 2017 17:52
