@derhallim <section> is a semantic element, from my understanding, it helps with SEO compared to a <div> which doesn't tell search engines what the content is about.

@rnallu

Hi, couldn't able to find the solution yet.
To append function in the middle elements. Do you got any idea?

I'm happy to take a look at your code if it helps!

Would need a live demo though - the gist you sent doesn't help me help you unfortunately...

how can i add effects to the links in boot strap navbar when hovering over the link or clicking it
Daniel Tait
@4xDMG
Apr 11 2017 01:00
@anabothula set the hover attribute in your css file
@anabothula if your nav bar is made up of <li> elements you can write something like navbar li :hover {what you want to happen here}
and for the click you can add the :active selector https://www.w3schools.com/cssref/sel_active.asp
Srinivasa reddy
@anabothula
Apr 11 2017 01:02
@4xDMG i want the bootstrap classes for the effects on the links i will try with css later
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Apr 11 2017 01:03
@anabothula There are lots of approaches to this - what have you tried so far?
It depends on the "effects" you want to achieve, is why I ask

Hey guys, im using codepen, and im trying to have some sort of icons at the bottom that will link to their respective pages, like my facebook linked up to a facebook icon. However im unsure if im supposed to use a picture of the icon, or an actual icon, or how im able to use it, thanks
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Apr 11 2017 01:06
@anabothula The code for that is listed here: https://mdbootstrap.com/components/navbar/
@Ravenor222 Font Awesome has logos for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.. See this challenge for info on how to add font awesome icons: https://www.freecodecamp.com/challenges/add-font-awesome-icons-to-our-buttons
Here are all the icons Font Awesome has to offer: http://fontawesome.io/icons/

Would code pen have that <head> thing covered? or do i put it at the top of my html
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Apr 11 2017 01:10
@Ravenor222 If you click "Settings" and then Click "CSS", you can add the link to Font Awesome. Usually you have to do a search on google to find different libraries
It's also listed in the documentation I think

Hey, any advice on how to complete the Local Weather assignment when getCurrentPosition() does not work from insecure sources (like codepen) ?
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Apr 11 2017 01:12
@anabothula That is not the code from the mdbootstrap site, it's the code from the Bootstrap v4 Alhpa site. They are different CSS frameworks
@kishfox This question comes up a lot, and it's not a quick answer... so I wrote a post. Hope it helps: http://codepen.io/skycoder/post/apisandlocation
@btken88 You have HTML for a Bootstrap 3 Navbar, but you have Bootstrap 4 added to your codepen settings.

@Ravenor222 I think so, sounds like a fun CSS project :) it just depends on the icon though. It would be different CSS for a square icon vs a round icon

Apr 11 2017 01:35

@gulsvi
Apr 11 2017 02:00
If your codepen is loaded over HTTP (your browser's address bar starts with HTTP) then you can call APIs over HTTP
If your codepen is loaded over HTTPS, then all calls over HTTP will fail
Chris Del
@arssonist
Apr 11 2017 02:01
So, it's https. How do I get it to http? Start a new pen?
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Apr 11 2017 02:01
Save, then remove the s in your address bar and hit enter
Chris Del
@arssonist
Apr 11 2017 02:03
@SkyCoder01 So I delete the s, ave and get an error. Then I reload. The s is back
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Apr 11 2017 02:03
@OrangeKulture You can use a Promise, if you want:
var getPosition = function (options) {
  return new Promise(function (resolve, reject) {
    navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(resolve, reject, options);
  });
}

getPosition().then(console.log)

I see, I'm working on Local Weather too, @OrangeKulture I'm using JSON rather than XML, and I'm using jQuery rather than straight JS for the API call... I assigned the results of getLocation function, to build my API call URL... Are you set on using XML data?
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Apr 11 2017 02:04
@arssonist Can you link to the pen? Maybe I'm confused about the issue
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Apr 11 2017 02:05
@arssonist Ahhh, you're the first person to hit this :)
Codepen Projects require you to use HTTPS all the time. You cannot use HTTP
Soon, all of codepen will automatically require HTTPS
Chris Del
@arssonist
Apr 11 2017 02:06
Oh, it's b/c I did a project.?
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Apr 11 2017 02:06
You will have to use an API that supports HTTPS to continue....
Yeah, because you did a project.
Or, click "New Pen" instead of "New Project" - but in June, all of codepen will be HTTPS anyway

@SkyCoder01

function myReplace(str, before, after) {
  var arr=str.split(' ');
  for(var i=0;i<arr.length;i++){
    if(after.charAt(0).toUpperCase() !== after.charAt(0)){
      return str.replace(before,after.charAt(0).toUpperCase()+after.slice(1));
    }else{
      return str.replace(before,after);
    }
  }
}

myReplace("A quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog", "jumped", "leaped");

its not working

Apr 11 2017 02:08
Rather then a regular pen? I didn't realize there was a diff. The instructions for the assignment didn't mention this issue, or I'd have worried about it off the top.
But I guess they want U to debug. That's part of it

@arssonist Yeah, codepen projects are a new feature - just released a couple of weeks ago.
@FlashHero if it is not upper case, don't make it upper case.
You are making it upper case if it is not uppercase, so your sentence returns as: "A quick brown fox Leaped over the lazy dog"
Chris Del
@arssonist
Apr 11 2017 02:10
Ahh, I never used this. I used Fiddle only. Good to know. This is much nicer! But I don't really need a project in this case. So I'prob move to a pen, and also add an https api for good measure.

@Androbat It's going to be much easier to do this if you use the correct version of Bootstrap. Codepen's quick-add menu adds Bootstrap 4, but we learned Bootstrap 3 in the Free Code Camp challenges. Also, click the down arrow in the top, right-hand corner of the HTML panel in codepen and select "analyze HTML", that will show you some errors to fix before making more changes.

@dillondriscoll - The page looks nice on a wide viewport, but as the view is narrowed, strange things happen - the entire top part of the page is just a gray background? There must be some funny setup in your code... taking a look.

@roxroy for some reason when i dont have the links in the header it ruins the entire alignment of the navbar and elements so im just going to keep them in for now
@roxroy i added them via settings too which is weird

@SkyCoder01 do u use geo location for the name of the city, i presume, dark sky won't send that in the response, right?
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Apr 11 2017 04:09
@dillondriscoll - I think that it is the fixed-height .sidebar class - when it reconfigures to a single column, it just stays at a fixed height, and that's the entire top part of the page. Using a fixed height in that way is generally not a good idea, it wreaks havoc with responsive behavior. You should just use the bootstrap grid and you should be able to adjust the way it responds to a smaller screensize - you could make that sidebar column just disappear on a narrow screen.
Dillon
@dillondriscoll
Apr 11 2017 04:10
@khaduch I was under the impression I was using the grid for that already, If I dont specify a size for it it messes up all kinds of alignment, still having headaches with aligning stuff on pages
@khaduch I have the grid setup to split the row into 3 6 3 with the 3's using the sidebar class to style
I think im missing some fundamental organizational style with all of this
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Apr 11 2017 04:17

@dillondriscoll - well, it's not working to the best advantage for responsive behavior. The fixed height section is going to cause a problem in most cases.

Just looking at your pen settings - you have .js code (bootstrap.js) in your CSS External settings, you also have both bootstrap 3.3.7 and bootstrap v4 - that's not good. You probably (or possibly) just want to stick with Bootstrap 3.3.7, that is what the freecodecamp lessons are using at this time. V4 is "alpha" - I don't know why CodePen put that in there as the default at this time?

Dillon
@dillondriscoll

If I delete the fixed size the background doesnt show up from lack of content
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Apr 11 2017 04:18
@dillondriscoll - set the body background-color, perhaps? Would that do what you want?
Dillon
@dillondriscoll
Apr 11 2017 04:18
ah
actually that doesnt work either because I have the sides as columns
if i delete those side columns how could I keep my content column where it is, just with margins?
I just deleted that extra bootstrap 4 im not sure why that was there thanks @khaduch

You can simplify in some areas, e.g.

    $("#all").removeClass("active").addClass("temp");
    $("#on").removeClass("active").addClass("temp");

Can be:

    $("#all, #on").removeClass("active").addClass("temp");
combine selectors with a comma
And this kind of code is really hard to maintain/debug:
$("#data").prepend('<div class="on"><div class="logo"><img src="' + logo + '" alt="" /></div><div class="stat"><p><a href="' + url + '" target="_blank">' + displayName + '</a> is currently streaming <span id="g">' + game + '</span></p></div></div>');
better to put it on multiple lines like normal HTML

As long as your code is publicly viewable, and you have a live demo, you can use whatever you want.

any help on the Weather App? I'm desperate, I've been over a week and still struggling with JSON and APIs https://codepen.io/reykjabik/pen/MpdpNP

@Reykjabik so you got the latitude and longitude, now u'll have to use AJAX to call JSON data from any weather api site

V Arun Kumar
@arunvkumr
Apr 11 2017 13:44
@Reykjabik navigator.geolocation is async, the value of lat and long only exists inside the navigator. try defining a new function and pass the lat and long from navigator to that function. it should work. for openweather api try using ajax call or jsonp callback.
Javier
@Reykjabik
Apr 11 2017 13:49
@theNuclearman the problem is that when I call the JSON data the longitude and latitude are not there yet, since the geolocation hasn't finished

@Reykjabik thats an asynchonous javascript acting in there, you gotta call the function after you got latitude and longitude, use .onload and call the function inside it

SaiChand Duppala
@saichandd
Apr 11 2017 14:10
@Reykjabik Also, althought its not more accurate, I think its better to use IP address, thats how weather websites do it, thats why they don't ask for your location. are you using .onload to change the div after loading the JSON data?
Javier
@Reykjabik
Apr 11 2017 14:11
@theNuclearman no, since JSON is not loading at all
I have a getJSON(wholeULR, function(){...} that is supposed to alert just a message but doesn't
V Arun Kumar
@arunvkumr
Apr 11 2017 14:12
@Reykjabik you are good. The problem is with the openweathermap, openweathermap use http and codepen uses https. so that's why codepen is blocking the json request as it thinks its from insecure source. try using it with jsonp callback. if it still doesn't work switch to someother api like wunderground or darksky.

@Reykjabik append ?callback=? at the end of your code. if it still doesn't work use ajax instead of getJSON.

@Reykjabik yeah what @arunvkumr said is right, try removing the 's' from https in codepen and u'll get something, JSONP is json with padding, its known to to unsecure but i'll do the job for now

@Reykjabik it would be much better and save your time if you switch to someother api. but for learning (i recommend this) it's good to know about jsonp and ajax. ajax request call gives you more option then getJSON.

Yo everybody, css is not my strongest side and I'm not really sure what the best way of solving this would be. I'm trying to create a bootstrap column with a background-image that I should be able to set to a fixed height but it should still take up the whole width of the page. It kind of looks like I want it at the moment but all I'm doing at the moment is to put some padding-bottom on the column which probably is not the best way to do it.

Hey, I'm workin on the pomodoro clock. I made a function to start the timer on clicking a button. I made the timer for the session time work, but I'm stuck at how to start the 2nd timer (the break timer), which starts after the session timer stops.
function start() {

  $("#start").click(function () {
    var s_countdown = session_time * 60; //session_time in seconds
    var b_countDown = break_time * 60; //break_time in seconds

    // decrease the "Session" timer by one second until it reaches zero
    var timeout_id = setInterval(function(){
      if(s_countdown > 0){
        s_countdown --;
        console.log(s_countdown);
      }

        if(s_countdown === 0) clearInterval(timeout_id);
    }, 1000);

    // decrease the "Break" timer by one second until it reaches zero
    var timeout_id = setInterval(function(){
        b_countdown --;
        console.log(b_countdown);

        if(b_countdown === 0) clearInterval(timeout_id);
    }, 1000);
  });

@SADickson Remove Bootstrap 4 from your codepen settings and move all of these resources into your settings instead:

@SADickson - you are loading two different versions of bootstrap, not sure if that's causing your problem, but you have 3.3.7 in your HTML panel (which should not be there...) and v4 in your CSS config external libs. All of your library loads should be done through the config panels, when using CodePen...

so A is 0.05
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Apr 11 2017 17:40
@Khalamari Yeah, 0.06
Add them up and combine them... I have it working with a while loop - but can't figure out how to do it with higher order functions
And I'm getting floating point arithmetic bugs with the while loop...
var result = [];
while (arr.length > 0) {
  for (var i = arr.length - 1; i > 0; i--) {
    if (arr[0][0] === arr[i][0]) {
      arr[0][1] += arr[i][1];
      arr.splice(i, 1);
    }
  }

  result.push(arr[0]);
  arr.splice(0, 1);
}

console.log(result);

@OrangeKulture load times maybe not only that demo proxy you're using. When you link to random websites like:

          var snow = 'http://miriadna.com/desctopwalls/images/max/Plain-snow-surface.jpg';
          var clear = 'https://piuly.files.wordpress.com/2010/10/shenandoah61.jpg';
          var rain = 'http://eskipaper.com/images/stunning-rainy-wallpaper-1.jpg';
          var clouds = 'http://www.laboiteverte.fr/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/paysage-nuage-ciel-03.jpg';
          var thunder = 'http://farmersalmanac.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Thunderstorm-5best.jpg';
          var drizzle = 'https://c1.staticflickr.com/8/7393/11375147803_0f453d8676_b.jpg';
          var extreme = 'https://timedotcom.files.wordpress.com/2016/04/hurricane-season-2016.jpeg?w=1100&quality=85';
          var atmosphere = 'http://aikiblog.kappazone.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Japan_Fog01.jpg';

It can take longer to load some backgrounds than others. The clouds one, for example, is in France

i mean if it was a commercial thing, i would defo max optimize it , but for the challenge, i think that as long as it's not 1998 dial up loading speeds, it should be ok

As it is now, you're relying on 10+ different servers in your code, considering libraries, APIs, proxies, and images
Jorge

Apr 11 2017 17:51
yeah, no for sure .. that's why i was trying and see how it would load for you guys. It's obviously not optimal.. might do the images or something .. as long as it works, Im happy for now. Once Im done with the algorithms, I might re visit

I have a weird question. I don't even know if this belongs here...
But how do I replace the .html's in URL's with a /
Something to do with rewrites? Or something...?
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Apr 11 2017 18:10
@Nathanael-M JavaScript .replace()?
Nathanael-M
@Nathanael-M
Apr 11 2017 18:10
I can directly modify the url like that?
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Apr 11 2017 18:11
It depends on where and how you're using it, I guess
Maybe not understanding how weird your question might actually be :)
Nathanael-M
@Nathanael-M
Apr 11 2017 18:11
Making a static site, each page is a different file. So when I go to a new page, it says in the URL "www.example.com/about.html". I want it to say "www.example.com/about/"
Hahaha
I appreciate the help, man :)
I don't even know how weird it is? Or normal? Who knows!
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Apr 11 2017 18:12
If it's a static site, why not just update the links manually?
Nathanael-M
@Nathanael-M

Howso?

Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Apr 11 2017 18:13
Open the HTML file with your links, select .html and then use your keyboard to enter a / :) (I must not be understanding the process)
Nathanael-M
@Nathanael-M
Apr 11 2017 18:14
Actually, I think I can demonstrate this! One sec.
Click on about and look at the URL
Gulsvi

Hahaha, okay. Google yesse.io
Cool little temporary hosting site.
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Apr 11 2017 18:16
@Nathanael-M So, when you drag and drop an index.html file there, I'm assuming you wrote that HTML, right?
And you made the links to go to www.example.com/about.html
<a href="www.example.com/about.html">About</a>
And you can update that code manually to be this instead:
<a href="www.example.com/about/">About</a>
Nathanael-M
@Nathanael-M
Apr 11 2017 18:18
Let me try.
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Apr 11 2017 18:18
You should just be able to open in notepad, for example, do a find and replace, search for .html" and replace it with /
Nathanael-M
@Nathanael-M
Apr 11 2017 18:19
Actually, I'm just linking to the file directly, so if I change the name of the file, the link won't go anywhere.
<a href="about.html">About</a> is the link. <a href="about/">About</a> doesn't exist, you feel me.
I think I have to do some PHP garbage.
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Apr 11 2017 18:19
@Nathanael-M I think I get what you mean - you want the URL to show www.example.com/about/ in the address bar, but actually load the file about.html?
Nathanael-M
@Nathanael-M
Apr 11 2017 18:19
Oui oui
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Apr 11 2017 18:20
