I’m trying to use flexbox to vertically center my random quote machine, but can’t seem to get the vertical center even with align-items. Would appreciate if anyone could point out the code I may be missing. https://codepen.io/dslemay/pen/OmPmJq

@robbiemu Just adding the height property to the .flex CSS? Just gave that a go and it’s still top aligned.

Anybody here know how to access the wikipedia API?
dslemay
@dslemay
Apr 16 2017 00:47
@robbiemu Got it. Thank you. So adding all of that on one lines on CSS forces the page to 100% so that the vertical align is looking at the whole page rather than just the container it is in?

@the-vampiire
looking for some help with my wiki viewer. https://codepen.io/thevampiire/pen/XRbKMY?editors=1000
So currently I am using an embarassingly janky method of displaying the summary / link to each result down below
I am wondering how I can pass this format into the dropdown list from the search? so rather than display the text (data[1]) it would display the text (in link format) and summary of each live result
I am looking to do this so the user can use the built in jqueryUI keyboard functions of up and down arrows to cycle through results and select the one they are interested in
looks like you will have to open the link and run it in the browser don’t think it will work in the chat (at least it isn’t for me)

no Saboor, as I told you a month ago you learn nothing by copying people’s code
all that channel is doing is giving out code, that’s not why I came here. I wrote this all myself and I want to learn how to expand on it
Pagnito
@Pagnito

the guy who spent 4 hours a month ago trying to teach you then realized all you do is copy code
you didnt care to learn anything
I dont forget when people waste my time. it’s no surprise you turn to a youtube channel that breaks down every single FCC challenge.
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 16 2017 02:03

I watched as I wasted my time tryng to teach you and you ignored every single thing I said and then went online and found the solution then posted it in the chat as if you had done it yourself
then you moved to the next challenge and some other poor bastard waste a couple hours of his time trying to teach you before you did the same thing
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 16 2017 02:05
@the-vampiire What the hell? that was during basic algorithm challenges and I redo it all my myself..
Vamp
@the-vampiire
Apr 16 2017 02:05
@Pagnito yes that was the purpose of studying chemical engineering. I spent 4 years memorizing the entire periodic table
it was a riveting experience
Pagnito
@Pagnito
Apr 16 2017 02:06
@the-vampiire dduuude, im so jelous, i was i was more mature when i was younger i would def spent alot of time studying the table, hopefully ill have time in the future
Vamp
@the-vampiire
Apr 16 2017 02:06
ya you should totally be jealous man. but listen if you really focus I bet you can memorize it faster than Saboor can learn how to code on his own
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 16 2017 02:06
I guess I dont know how for loop, function, getJSON method, css, js, some algorithm, ajax, works
Vamp
@the-vampiire

might take you 5-10 years but I believe in you bro. you can get a great job once you memorize the periodic table

right?
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 16 2017 02:10
I will figure it out
Vamp
@the-vampiire
Apr 16 2017 02:11
oh - and yes you can find the solutions online. but there are only a few repos that show them so when you show your code and its copy pasted from them it will be obvious. good luck bro
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 16 2017 02:11
So #1 I just have to add all the numbers?
Pagnito
@Pagnito
Apr 16 2017 02:13

@Pagnito Early 2015
@the-vampiire ok Im working on it
Just one question...
Can I have for loop inside function block? been a while since I have do algorithm challenges
Vamp
@the-vampiire
Apr 16 2017 02:17
I’ve solved about 10 I think but in python. I am now trying in JS. let’s see who gets there first

Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 16 2017 02:27
Not really..
Vamp
@the-vampiire
Apr 16 2017 02:27

your first question is: Can I have for loop inside function block? been a while since I have do algorithm challenges

this is going to go great

nah he will give up when he can’t find the solution online, then pretend he doesn’t know who I am or what the original question was
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 16 2017 02:28
pretend?
Seriously? I never knew your name
Vamp
@the-vampiire
Apr 16 2017 02:29
I’m just trying to prove the point that he can’t do anything himself because he’s been copying code. He wants to act like he doesn’t copy anything and he’s a pro because he can rattle off some basic JS syntax.
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 16 2017 02:29
mashi, dimoed, pagnito, skycoder, rob, johnny, dan, kera, and others are all I know
Vamp
@the-vampiire
Apr 16 2017 02:29
so let’s see you solve THE most basic PE challenge
without copying anyone
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 16 2017 02:30
Finally I figured it out
Join method didnt work obviously

function addallnum(str){
  console.log(str[0]+str[1]+str[2]+str[3])
}
addallnum([3,5,6,9]);
Vamp
@the-vampiire
Apr 16 2017 02:30
wow you got it bro
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 16 2017 02:30
It return 23
You are welcome..
Vamp
@the-vampiire
Apr 16 2017 02:30
you totally got it

heres’ the question for reference

If we list all the natural numbers below 10 that are multiples of 3 or 5, we get 3, 5, 6 and 9. The sum of these multiples is 23.

Find the sum of all the multiples of 3 or 5 below 1000.

Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 16 2017 02:31
I used str.join('+') and it only return 3+5+6+9 :(
Vamp
@the-vampiire
Apr 16 2017 02:31
so as usual Saboor has just copied exactly what was given to him in the question
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 16 2017 02:31
What copy?
Vamp
@the-vampiire
Apr 16 2017 02:31
he is so used to copying he doesnt even read the question. just copies the EXAMPLE that shows you how to solve the problem for numbers below 10
this is my point
hueybah
@hueybah
Apr 16 2017 02:32
For the tribute page are we welcome to write and link a style.css if we want? or do they want us to just use bootstrap?
Vamp
@the-vampiire
Apr 16 2017 02:32
@hueybah you can use anything you want
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 16 2017 02:32

So #1 I just have to add all the numbers?
@MathematicsCoding yes, the answer to the first project euler question is just to add the numbers
Pagnito
@Pagnito

@the-vampiire i dunno, i didnt follow the whole thing form beginning, i caught on to u guys doing cahllenge just a few min ago

this is the question:
If we list all the natural numbers below 10 that are multiples of 3 or 5, we get 3, 5, 6 and 9. The sum of these multiples is 23.

Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 16 2017 02:34
Yeah?
So you forgot your own answer?
Vamp
@the-vampiire
Apr 16 2017 02:34
I was being sarcastic because you asked an obviously stupid question
why would you need javascript to add 3+5+6+9. the fact that you made a function with an array with these values says enough
console.log(3+5+6+9); obviously is the fastest solution
you have learned nothing and my point stands
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 16 2017 02:35
I thought I had to add all the number from parameter?
Not that way
Vamp
@the-vampiire
Apr 16 2017 02:36
this is the solution, go back to copying code.
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 16 2017 02:36
nah I dont do it
Where is the proof of me copying the code this month?
Vamp
@the-vampiire
Apr 16 2017 02:36
comically pathetic
Where is the proof of me copying the code this month?
function addallnum(str){
  console.log(str[0]+str[1]+str[2]+str[3])
}
addallnum([3,5,6,9]);
there it is chief
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 16 2017 02:37
I came up with these myself
lol
Vamp
@the-vampiire
Apr 16 2017 02:38
only somoene who has learned absolutely nothing in the past month would write a solution to an EXAMPLE question like that. while completely ignoring the ACTUAL question because you are incapable
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 16 2017 02:38
I didnt understand the question at first I thought I just have to all the number so I asked you
Vamp
@the-vampiire
Apr 16 2017 02:38
no - you didn’t read the question
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 16 2017 02:38
Yes I did and I dont understand it
Vamp
@the-vampiire
Apr 16 2017 02:38
okay
this is the question:
If we list all the natural numbers below 10 that are multiples of 3 or 5, we get 3, 5, 6 and 9. The sum of these multiples is 23.
Find the sum of all the multiples of 3 or 5 below 1000.
Find the sum of all the multiples of 3 or 5 below 1000.
Find the sum of all the multiples of 3 or 5 below 1000.
Find the sum of all the multiples of 3 or 5 below 1000.
Find the sum of all the multiples of 3 or 5 below 1000.
do you understand it now?
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 16 2017 02:39
Maybe after sum I get 23 Multiply 23 each array number?
Like 23 multiply 3 then 23 multiply 5 then 23*6...
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 16 2017 02:41
Yeah like I said I didnt understand it
Vamp
@the-vampiire
Apr 16 2017 02:41
yep
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 16 2017 02:43
@Donald-Tho three of `'s
Vamp
@the-vampiire
Apr 16 2017 02:43
the question could not be any clearer. it explains what it is asking, it then provides an example for a number set below 10, then asks you to expand on that approach to a number set below 1000 (because it would be infeasible to do this by hand - thus it becomes a programming challenge)
whatever dude. good luck copying code. I heard when you get a job as a developer all they expect you to do is google and copy paste then they pay you 70 grand a year for that.
Anthony Pierson
@Donald-Tho
Apr 16 2017 02:43
but, running the code inside. Like how they embedded their wikipedia viewer
Vamp

Anthony Pierson
@Donald-Tho
Apr 16 2017 02:44
yes
Saboor Malik

@the-vampiire Ok whatever you think, just keep your options to yourself... I dont copy code anymore
Vamp

just paste the link to your codepen
it will auto generate that view you saw

Anthony Pierson
@Donald-Tho
Apr 16 2017 02:45
alright
so, now my actual question lol
I can't seem to get the cols working
I'm trying to insert text on the right side of an image
anything that requires word wrapping gets put below the image
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 16 2017 02:46
You want to move the text to right?
Anthony Pierson
@Donald-Tho
Apr 16 2017 02:47
it is to the right, but anything that requires word wrapping puts it below the image
Pagnito
@Pagnito
Apr 16 2017 02:47
is it me or MDN has some wrong code, it says i can do this $curr = $curr.prev(); where in my codepen i have to do $(curr)
Saboor Malik
@MathematicsCoding
Apr 16 2017 02:48
Did you add jQuery to JS setting?
Are you still on twitch?

please can anyone who knows CSS positioning help me D :
i am trying to get the icons and buttons on this page to be positioned in relation to the resizing background image and also resize in relation to the background image too. Instead they relocate (and don't resize) in relation to the entire page (html/body element perhaps?). If any one could have a look that would be sooo cool
(ps. i had them resizing ok when in col-- but i'm trying to do it without that)

for now is this ok?

well, when I pushed the value, which was the url I had to set it up like "<img src='"+url+"'..."

Sorin Ruse
@sorinr
Apr 16 2017 03:36
@johnnunns got the idea. let me think
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Apr 16 2017 03:46
@NMC96 - well, that ~ is a "general sibling selector" (which is something that I'm not familiar with) reading the docs - it looks like it will only match if the elements are siblings - that is, have the same parent. So now that you have put the <i> tags as children of other <div> elements, they are no longer siblings with the .fbinfo-classed div, for example. So that is why that is breaking, I think. I don't know how you can make that work again, though. I'm not that much of a CSS-whiz to have that answer off the top of my head...
Neil
@NNeil1
Apr 16 2017 03:47
Thanks for going through it for me @khaduch at least I know the cause of the issue. I'll just have to find a selector that works for multiple parents

Apr 16 2017 03:56
@NMC96 - maybe if you add further qualification to get the column divs into the selector it would work? Not sure how specific you have to get with this? maybe add another class to those column divs that you can use in the selector? And I guess you would need to get that row div in there, as well? I don't know if it will work, but it seems like the direction you have to go in?
Neil
@NNeil1
Apr 16 2017 03:58
@khaduch that should work. I just need to give the div a backup class so when i use the bootstrap grid it loads the hover correctly.

Apr 16 2017 04:30
@johnnunns to use .onerror and .onload, I'm pretty sure you need to create an image object first. At least, that's how I've used it in the past.
$(document).ready(function() {
  $.getJSON("https://codesmith-precourse.firebaseio.com/instagram/-JqL35o8u6t3dTQaFXSV.json", function(data) {
    data.forEach(imageUrl => {
      const img = new Image();
      img.src = imageUrl;
      img.onerror = imageError;
      img.onload = imageSuccess;
    });
  });
});

function imageError() {
  $('body').append(`<img class="noshow images" src="/images/noimage.gif">`);
}

function imageSuccess(e) {
  $('body').append(`<img class="images" src="${e.path[0].src}">`);
}
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Apr 16 2017 04:30
@NMC96 - looking at this: https://www.w3.org/TR/selectors/#general-sibling-combinators - it specifically mentions "two sequences of simple selectors" - I've been trying more complicated selector patterns and haven't been able to get it to work. I wonder if you can use flexbox to set up responsive behavior of those icons and maybe simplify the structure somewhat?
@madhurisobale - just before I sign off, did you try adding that space and did it work? Just didn't want to leave you hanging ...

what on earth is that last bit src="${e.path[0].src
and @SkyCoder01 where are you actually calling the functions?
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Apr 16 2017 04:40
This assigns a function to call only if there's an error or the image load completes:
      img.onerror = imageError;
      img.onload = imageSuccess;
That e.path[0] I can't really explain, I had to see what arguments were passed to the functions for onload and parse that.
John Nunns
@johnnunns
Apr 16 2017 04:42
but that's only setting it equal the function definition
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Apr 16 2017 04:42

I had it like this first and it wasn't working:

      img.onerror = imageError();
      img.onload = imageSuccess(imageUrl);

And then found this: http://stackoverflow.com/a/12512575

so I did a console.log(arguments) at the start of the functions, and browsed through it in the console to find the image src
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Apr 16 2017 04:47
@johnnunns lol, funny, also in that stackoverflow answer, they mention this.src that works the same as e.path[0].src. I was overthinking it...
function imageSuccess() {
  $('body').append(`<img class="images" src="${this.src}">`) ;
}
John Nunns
@johnnunns
Apr 16 2017 04:49
the api I found on get json was this
```
$.getJSON( "ajax/test.json", function( data ) {
  var items = [];
  $.each( data, function( key, val ) {
    items.push( "<li id='" + key + "'>" + val + "</li>" );
  });
  $( "<ul/>", {
    "class": "my-new-list",
    html: items.join( "" )
  }).appendTo( "body" );
});
that's why i initially went with that, but I'm trying to figure out how the jquery selector's "foreach" method could still be used here
Question:
wikiLogo.click(function(){
    wikiLogo.css("display", "none");
    searchAppear.html("Search: <input type='text' id='searchBar' class='form-control'></input><button class='btn btn-primary' id='submit'>Submit Search</button>");
As you can see, I'm creating some HTML elements upon the click of a button, each with their own ids. Will I be able to later access these Ids with jQuery?
Gulsvi
Apr 16 2017 04:53
Honestly, I've never seen this syntax:
  $( "<ul/>", {
    "class": "my-new-list",
    html: items.join( "" )
  }).appendTo( "body" );
I don't really understand it @johnnunns
that's where I got it from
ok, played a little bit
$(document).ready(function() {
  $.getJSON("https://codesmith-precourse.firebaseio.com/instagram/-JqL35o8u6t3dTQaFXSV.json", function(data) {
    $.each(data, function(index, val) {
      const img = new Image();
      img.src = val;
      img.onerror = imageError;
      img.onload = imageSuccess;
    });
  });
});
function imageError() {
  $('body').append(`<img class="noshow images" src="">`);
function imageSuccess(e) {
@SkyCoder01 I just now thought: wouldn't it be easier if I created the HTML on the page, but didn't display them? Then I could access them wherever, and just display them on the click of a button. Would that work?
Gulsvi
@XenoCoding It should definitely be possible to modify them if they're created and hidden
The thing is, you likely have to put the code that modifies them in another function that runs only after you create the elements
Benjamin
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
John Nunns
@johnnunns
Apr 16 2017 05:23
so i'm on to the css now. which is usually pretty straight forward for me, but I've never worked with a database of pictures that I 'get' to a website
ok it's a good thing then
so normally I would create a div around each so they show up vertically
is that div added inside the js function?
I've answered my own question
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Apr 16 2017 05:25
@johnnunns That's one of my favorite things about the .html() method - you can put in as much HTML as you want. Wrap each <img> in a <div> if you want, like:
$('body').append('<div><img class="images"; src="${this.src}"></div>');
John Nunns
@johnnunns
Apr 16 2017 05:25
as usual. Sometimes it just helps me to actually write it down, Yeah exactly what i just tried ^^
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Apr 16 2017 05:26
With Template Literals, you can make it look just like HTML:
    $('#form').html(
      `<input id="input" type="search" placeholder="Search Wikipedia...">
       <div class="random-link">
         <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/special:random" target="_blank">
           Or, view a random article instead?
         </a>
       </div>`
    );
I didn't use it much in my Wikipedia app though
@SkyCoder01 yea i been hearing about this es6 on youtube. what does es6 mean
I always have to look up methods and ask, is this ES6 or ES5? I guess I didn't use ES5 enough to know what's better about it. The arrow functions look cool though
I think .reduce(), .filter(), .map() are also pretty new. Those are really nice compared to for loops
Hi, I'm working on the Twitch.TV app. Does anyone know why an array I defined at the very beginning of my code, goes from having a value at i to being undefined at i once it's inside a $.getJSON function?
The $.getJSON function doesn't do anything with the array except try to print its value to console
I have this script (incomplete):
for(var i = 0; i < users.length; i++){
url = api + users[i] + callback;
console.log("url is " + url);
console.log("before getJSON, users[i] is " + users[i]);
Hey guys
I made a portfolio page, but I don't want a one-page portfolio. So, I basically hit all the marks, just don't want to do number 6 "navigate to different sections of the webpage by clicking buttons in the navigation."
Is that a problem?
Apr 16 2017 19:12
@vardidanielle you could use more %-vales for stuff like widths in case you gave your elements a fixed pixel-width. Also, it's just normal that a smartphone cannot show the same amount of content like a desktop can in the same space. You can define specific styles for your elements for specific screen dimensions, take a look at that: https://developer.mozilla.org/de/docs/Web/CSS/Media_Queries/Using_media_queries
@vardidanielle use bootstrap, im not sure what taltman means, but its not normals for the phone to show less content, today its all about being able to create responsive sites, phones will show the same content but diffirently, basically stacked on top of each other
@MathematicsCoding yea, i had several problems to solve lol
@MathematicsCoding and still got a few more
these are my next problems, to make sure, my site is perfect
i mean app
solve the responsive on screen resize DOM recognizing new
create minus function
make icons toggle when input toggles
make one input disappear if i press the other
try to look into the width of mobile drop down
search and add will add into all and show it (mobile)
make it so u can’t add the same member twice
look into background resizing on content change
sort by alphabet
it might be hard to understand some of them, its keyworded cuz its for me lol
@Pagnito bootstrap just uses media queries as well. I think it's good to understand what a framework does before using it
@vardidanielle
Apr 16 2017 19:27
@taltmann42 @Pagnito thanks guys but the thing is that everything i have done is in different margins and paddings so that it will be in very specific places on the page.. i dont see how it is possible to change it..
@taltmann42
Apr 16 2017 19:30
@vardidanielle if you have specific margins/paddings for each element, you'd have to adjust each one individually for each screen - or - refactor the code so it covers more general cases.. hard to explain you usually get a feeling for what CSS you can/should use for certain use-cases
@Pagnito
