@Jaizon good point re: Bootstrap 4... I'm looking into the differences now. Bootstrap 4 will probably render things differently than the lessons that lead up to the first project, though...

W @mdmpdx thepoint is, they are very similar but some classes from bts 3 are being replaced on bts 4 and there are new classes and elements on bts 4 as well, if I'm not mistaken

@jaizon I would switch to BS4 but I suspect that will jack up the whole page

@mdmpdx probably jQuery as you'd only have to add .css("font-size", "a lower font size here");
but I don't know jQuery, so don't take it into account
@mdmpdx lol, have no clue either
Matt
@mdmpdx
Apr 26 2017 00:39
@Jaizon It's a puzzle to me... the demo code is clean and has no custom CSS or JS, super lean and autoresizes text
@Jaizon will try just updating to BS4 and learn the new syntax to see if this resolves

question about the "Tribute Page" project. After I designed my page, I looked at the example source code. I didn't use class "thumbnail" so I figured I'd try that. For some reason I do not get the white border like the example page and the img never resize with the window size. I tried for days and never got it to work. So finally I copied the entire source from the example into my own pen, lo and behold that example image now has the exact same problem as mine with thumbnail. Is there some underlying setting missing?
Tom
@moT01

one way i fix that is adding max-width: 100%; in my css
then the image will shrink with its container
abi38

Apr 26 2017 01:03
in the <img>? I had "image-fluid" and it worked, but the example html didn't use it and somehow it worked on his page also, while when I copy all his html it doesn't work on mine

@abi38 Bootstrap 4 is already out but using it (which is the default when you do the add-on shortcut in CodePen's CSS settings) will break everything. I have copied and pasted the markup from the demo into codepen using bs3 and it renders properly

Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Apr 26 2017 01:35
@ScottBland The row is part of the bootstrap grid system. It is typically what you use for bootstrap columns. You can have up to 12 columns in a row. The jumbotron class is a section with a gray background - mainly for highlighting specific content.

could I write
function getWeather(data){
    console.log(data);

var url = 'http://api.openweathermap.org/data/2.5/weather?' +
            'lat=' + data.lat + '&lon=' + data.lon +

Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Apr 26 2017 01:43
@Zacele Yes, that would work. All of your location info from ip-api.com is in the data variable. That JSON object uses lat and lon for the latitude and longitude, so data.lat and data.lon would give you the latitude + longitude.
Khoa Le
@Zacele
Apr 26 2017 01:51

}

function getWeather(data){

@FlashHero My understanding is that proto exists on an instance of a class, prototype exists on the class constructor and becomes proto when instantiated.
@FlashHero In other words
var arr = new Array();
Array.prototype === arr.__proto__;
the second line evalutes as true
@FlashHero As a practical matter, if you're going to extend a class by adding methods, do it to the prototype on the constructor, not the __proto__ on the instance
DistinctWolf
@DistinctWolf
Apr 26 2017 02:35
so the prototype property only exists on constructor functions?

}
Object.setPrototypeOf(obj,anotherObj);
console.log(obj.__proto__);
console.log(anotherObj.prototype);

@sevensixtwo762 I'd have to know more about how those images come back, but not sure you need bootstrap. Seems the image sizes can be random, but maybe the API lets you crop them - or you could do some math with the javascript to determine better placement. Really just nitpicking though :) very cool idea!
When I worked with the Google Places API, you can request images near a person's location - and in that API, I could specify a max width or height. Had to do some math based on whether or not the user had a mobile device in portrait vs landscape mode to choose the best image size.

col-xs-12: use 12/12 columns on xs size screens (100% wide)
col-sm-10: use 10/12 columns on sm size screens (83% wide)
col-sm-offset-1: offset it to the right by 1 column on sm size screens
col-md-8: use 8/12 columns on md size screens (67% wide)
col-md-offset-2: offset it to the right 2 columns on md size screens
It's a combination of all those parameters so it looks different on each screen size ^^

Sometimes just some CSS fixes it

ok

https://codepen.io/n0f3/pen/epvmoB?editors=0010

return $.getJSON('https://wind-bow.gomix.me/twitch-api/streams/' + streamName + "?callback=?");
that's the request i'm making, using the workaround that freecodecamp has made
but i'm still geting an error response as a result
not really sure why
i've checked the example on codepen and it's using the same exact endpoint, but not getting any errors back
_

i've just tried now to not return the promise object and instead use the success callback right away and then it works
so what's different if i decide to use promise that makes it fail?
h1tag

@jmariomejiap I figured out your problems
well, some of them
when you call getCurrentPosition, the first 2 things you pass are functions. I added the () and got progress.
also, I think you need to call var myNav = window.navigator in order to get a reference to the navigator object
and then change navigator.geolocation... refs to myNav.geolocation...

I often see both of these in people's code:

//option 2

@brucem1976 one is a single div with 2 classes. You could use that for setting different groups of properties. The other is nested divs, which are separate. The classes are on each, and separate, but they can interact.

ie on option 2, the div with classA might shrink around the content in div with classB. or classA could be full page width, and classB a box inside the page.
brucem1976
@brucem1976
Apr 26 2017 07:06
but if the <div> <div> and the </div></div> both come directly after each other, is there ever a reason to separate them?
Jean-Paul Sauve
@jp-sauve
Apr 26 2017 07:07
option 2 is 2 divisions. one inside the other. you could represent 2 panels in a page with <div class="body"> <div class="panel1"></div><div class="panel2"></div></div>
but with only 1 div, there's only 1 box. you can resize and move it, but it'll only ever be one box.

@brucem1976 think of a div as a container. if you think you need to differentiate your html with a 'container' then a div may be a good thing to use
brucem1976
@brucem1976
Apr 26 2017 07:09
ok - but am i right that if there is nothing between <div class="classA"> and <div class="classB">, and nothing between the </div> and </div>, there's no reason to separate them into 2 div's
Jean-Paul Sauve
@jp-sauve
Apr 26 2017 07:09
for example, you can center a div, but it needs a parent div that is larger than it to be centered within.
if there's no content, and you don't need it for a css target, then yes it might be a waste.

Alexander Domikov
@AlexanderDom
Apr 26 2017 08:39
you have several choices @abhishek9650, you can put image inside your paragraph and put float:left on image
but remove position: relative and top and left or you can change paragraphs display
<img> by defaults are display:inline-block you can add it to <p> and if they has together 100% of width they gonna bee inline next to each other
for exemple img has width: 30% and p 70%

@mdmpdx Actually, there's a really easy way on bootstraps, again I'm using 4 and don't knowif it workson 3 as i never used. See this code.

@mdmpdx / Small devices (landscape phones, 544px and up) /
@media (min-width: 544px) {
h1 {font-size:4.5rem;}
}

/ Medium devices (tablets, 768px and up) The navbar toggle appears at this breakpoint /
@media (min-width: 768px) {
h1 {font-size:5rem;}
}

/ Large devices (desktops, 992px and up) /
@media (min-width: 992px) {
h1 {font-size:5.5rem;}
}

/ Extra large devices (large desktops, 1200px and up) /
@media (min-width: 1200px) {
h1 {font-size:6rem;}
}

@mdmpdx and, btw, 1rem = 16px

so @abhishek9650 , there a magical rule in css, box-sizing what it does ? it change how your element box is calculated, i mean if your say width:100% on your element it gonna 100% no matter you have borders, paddings
otherways it's gonna be width + padding-left and right + border
was i clear ?

@thodorisanta what is it you want to happen?
the addClass at the top of the js?
i dont see those classes in the css so it wont do anything
Spyrantis Theodoros
@thodorisanta
Apr 26 2017 14:27
@moT01 look at line 86 in JS. on click of the td elements that have this class
it makes the game work
if in line 86 i change the class name from .twoPlayerGame to .game (a class all the td elements already have), then the game works fine
but when i use the addClass and then use that class (twoPlayerGame) nothings works
Tom
@moT01
Apr 26 2017 14:33
so are you adding that class just so you can target the element by that class
Spyrantis Theodoros
@thodorisanta
Apr 26 2017 14:37
yeah
and a different class will be added if the user chooses 1 player game
so i can use a different on click function on the td elements

Apr 26 2017 14:40
yea i see what you're saying
it adds the class
and nothing happens when you click it
it shows it has the class in the inspector
but im going to guess that the reason is that in the eyes of js the element with that class doesn't exist
Spyrantis Theodoros
@thodorisanta
Apr 26 2017 14:44
isnt that a bug?
Tom
@moT01
Apr 26 2017 14:44
no
im trying to look at the actual source code to confirm, but its tough in the codepen editor
but i think im right, and if you were to look at that source - those classes wouldn't be there
so i think that's where js is looking for those classes
im wondering if you added the classes right away, and then maybe removed one when you pick your player
not sure if that makes any sense

@kkalamarz go lookup slice() on MDN
@kkalamarz you can archeive the same result by combine split and splice and create less Arr then the method you have use
reading now
@thodorisanta that works
$(document).on('click', '.twoPlayerGame', function(evt) {
  console.log('twoPlayerGame');
Spyrantis Theodoros
@thodorisanta
Apr 26 2017 15:26
@moT01 why that works?
Tom
@moT01
Apr 26 2017 15:31
cause you were trying to target something that didn't exist, so you need to do it differently
when you add the class like that - it doesn't go and actually change your source code(the code rendered by the browser), that all stays the same. so when javascript looks for it there - it doesn't find it
my thinking anyway, i think its pretty accurate
Alexander Domikov
@AlexanderDom
Apr 26 2017 15:33
because .on() gonna add eventListener on your class when it gonna be created, not like addEvenListener or .click because if your element don't exist at start, they attached to nothing
.on() is good for ajax added content too

@faahim If it's your first day - I should warn you that you're using the beta version of free code camp. It will release soon, but when it does, all of your progress will be lost.
@siddarthk123 I did not use that API because it does not work with HTTPS (unless you pay). I would recommend a different API to use: https://darksky.net/dev/
Especially if you plan on using codepen - they will enforce HTTPS in about a month, so it's good to choose a weather API that works with HTTPS.

Am I doing it correctly? How can I retrieve the information inside the currently{} from darksky now?

@GCosme you would have to call newReport inside of the callback of the geolocation request.
You get the response to the ajax call into a function you supply by adding the key 'success' to the ajax request object

hello!
  $('#myTable th').on('click', function() {
    // figure out which column to sort
    let attrToSort = $(this).attr('rel');

    let result = 1;
    // sorting function
    const ordered = people.sort((a, b) => a[attrToSort] > b[attrToSort] ? [result] : -[result]);
    // reverse sorting when the table heading is clicked for the second time
    // display result

  });
How can I write a statement that if #myTable th is clicked for the second time it changes the value of let result to -result? I want to achieve the change of direction of array sorting

Hi everyone, I'm having trouble with my first project (Tribute Page)

I seem to have trouble assigning certain classes of bootstrap to my code. For example, I can't get .img-responsive to work

@snjeg - I'm taking a look - I suspect that you might be using Bootstrap V4 because that is the current CodePen default. And img-responsive is the Bootstrap V3 class. There is a new class for Bootstrap V4, but you might just want to fall back to V3 by changing your URL for loading bootstrap to this: https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.3.7/css/bootstrap.min.css since all of the lessons (and most examples that you see) are based on Bootstrap 3. Delete the V4 link and put the new one in and then things would work as you expect, most likely.

Apr 26 2017 18:08

@bestintown23 - I would say that you have to put your col-sm-4 column first on that section, too, to balance out what you did above? Although it looks like you might have some problems in your HTML - I see a div class="containter" - misspelling of container and you aren't using row divs with your container, which is how they are supposed to be used:

<div class="container">
    <div class="row">
        <div class="col-sm-4">
             stuff here
        </div>
        <div class="col-sm-8">
             wider stuff here
        </div>
    </div>
</div>

Something like that.
And you might be getting around to this - typos in your text, too - just thought I'd mention it.

@havendark @snjeg - no, you have to switch to using Bootstrap version 3 if you are using Bootstrap V3 classes - I mentioned this and put the URL above: :point_up: April 26, 2017 1:52 PM

@snjeg @khaduch since this is a free code camp exercise, the quick add version of bootstrap should work, the columns are unnecessary, and the image may have restrictions that can be overcome with the style width workaround

@havendark - re: :point_up: April 26, 2017 2:13 PM the V4 bootstrap has a different class for what used to be img-responsive - it is now img-fluid. So if you are sticking with V4, @snjeg - check this documentation: https://v4-alpha.getbootstrap.com/migration/ Bootstrap V3 to v4 migration information. There have been some significant changes. So my recommendation is to stick with V3 unless you want to switch, then you need to learn the V4 changes.
BTW- CodePen has nothing to do with freeCodeCamp, so it won't just work if something major changes in CodePen, such as the version of bootstrap that they load by default. I'm trying to give the best advice that I know at this point, always willing to learn something new if it changes.

@schoenertraeumer change the href when you get a new quote
and im not sure you want your <a> inside your button like that
scratch that second comment, ...maybe just need a closing</a>

okay
I seem to be getting the link to the page as my only twitter message and I'm not sure how it's doing that as I didn't intend that and how to 'fix' that behaviour.

@schoenertraeumer first, i don't understand why you are nesting a button inside an <a> tag that if styled the right way will look just as a button. second if you add this `https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text='+your quote text+author+whatever you want as a href to your <a> tag it will work :)

my jQuery has essentially 1) on clicking the button, getJSON from this URL and add content to the body
the error I'm getting is:
XMLHttpRequest cannot load https://crossorigin.me/http://quotesondesign.com/wp-json/posts?filter[orderby]=rand&filter[posts_per_page]=1&callback=. The 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header contains multiple values '*, https://s.codepen.io', but only one is allowed. Origin 'https://s.codepen.io' is therefore not allowed access.
Any idea?

@AnnaVih using bootstraps?
Jean-Paul Sauve
@jp-sauve
Apr 26 2017 22:38
@AnnaVih with bootstrap, you use sibling divs with col-* classes. so if you have <div></div><div></div> and you want them side by side for medium and larger screens, you add the number of columns wide they should be to the column size class, like this: <div class="col-xs-12 col-md-4 col-lg-6">stuff</div><div class="col-xs-12 col-md-4 col-lg-6">other stuff</div>

Jean-Paul Sauve

which means, on xtra small screens, make the div all 12 columns, forcing the next div down. on medium screens, they're 6 wide, allowing 2 sidebyside.
ok...maybe it would help if you posted a link to your pen?

@AnnaVih I'm not sure if this is your problem, but you have to be very careful when trying to override bootstrap using its own classes.
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Apr 26 2017 22:54

@Carter4502 It should be:

    if (input.val() === "minnesota" || input.val() === "Minnesota") {
      state.text("MN");
    }

And you'll need to add jQuery to that codepen to test it out
