if you string together a url and go to it, does it work?
did you add jquery?
goodm0urning
@goodm0urning
May 31 2017 00:00
If I put those variables together as it is written then yes
And I did add jQuery

May 31 2017 00:01
console.log(localWeather) = nothing?
I didn't try console.log, but I tried putting it into the html which in theory should display it
It works when I just put the variables that I established into the html the same way
Tom
@moT01
May 31 2017 00:03
lats and longs arent available down there i dont think
longs has a typo in the url string
goodm0urning
@goodm0urning
May 31 2017 00:03
I fixed the type, that was my B
How do I make the variables global? I thought declaring it without the 'var' was how to make it global?
Thanks so much for the help, I've been stuck on this for three days
Tom
@moT01
May 31 2017 00:07
im not sure, i would declare them up top and define them in the function
goodm0urning
@goodm0urning
May 31 2017 00:09
Oh okay, I'll give that a shot when I get home. Thank you!
Tom
@moT01
May 31 2017 00:09
you sure it works when you string together a url with those variables?
looks like some stuff is missing
&lon=
&lat=
i think is supposed to be how it goes
goodm0urning
@goodm0urning
May 31 2017 00:11
Yeah, it comes after the question mark in the url. Hold on, I'll grab a strong
string*
This is how it should look for lat/long based on the api documentation
with number values where {lat}{lon} are
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
May 31 2017 00:13
Sorry to interrupt, but there are a few issues here,
Global variables don't work with an async function like navigator.geolocaiton's success function - you'll need to send the data to another function or process it inside the function(position) callback.
Any URL used with $.getJSON needs to begin with HTTP:// or HTTPS://
On codepen, all URLs must start with HTTPS:// and Open Weather Map doesn't work over HTTPS unless you pay money.
Tom
@moT01
May 31 2017 00:14
someday ill figure that out
goodm0urning
@goodm0urning
May 31 2017 00:14
Oh...Okay then
Thank you
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
May 31 2017 00:15
@goodm0urning For example:
if (navigator.geolocation) {
  navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(function(position) {
    getWeather(position.coords.latitude, position.coords.longitude)
  });
}

function getWeather(lats, longs) {
  console.log(lats, longs) // here it works
}

$(document).ready(function() {
  console.log(lats, longs) // doesn't work here
})
goodm0urning
@goodm0urning
May 31 2017 00:16
Okay, and that's with the variables defined in the if statement?
Where do I define the variables in that example?
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
May 31 2017 00:16
In that example, they're arguments, not variables
Maybe a better example:
var lats;
var longs;
if (navigator.geolocation) {
  navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(function(position) {
    lats = position.coords.latitude;
    longs = position.coords.longitude;

    console.log(lats, longs) // works here
  });
console.log(lats, longs) // undefined
}

console.log(lats, longs) // undefined

Good evening all. I had a question in regards to the FCC "days streak" calendar. I have been going straight for 11 days and I am now in the (50 hrs front end development) projects that I can't necessarily complete the challenges in one day (because of work schedule) but I am still coding everyday on the site. This will not log on the calendar as another day coding logged to keep the streak alive like when I was completing the challenges through HTML/CSS/JQuery (I am OCD and want to keep it going) is there another way I can log an activity to keep my streak going?
goodm0urning
@goodm0urning
May 31 2017 00:20
Ah! Okay, so (thank you for the help again, seriously!) after something like the recent example, I should be able to call those variables, but how do I call the API using them if I have to start it with "https://"?
@jdbrann I think just logging in counts for your streak, but otherwise, try logging an activity - even one you've already done?

May 31 2017 00:28

the full code is:

```
$(document).ready(function(){
  var api = "api.openweathermap.org/data/2.5/weather?id=524901&APPID=2695c15ad6578b8431e760bad1293464";
  $.getJSON(api, function(data){
    alert("sidafa");
  });
});
I'm use codepen.io and added jquery. An alert outside of the .getJSON get executed but not the one from the .getJSON function call
It was great while it lasted, folks. Dropbox has ended support for serving HTML files as of today for Basic users.
Dropbox Basic (free) users: Beginning October 3, 2016, you can no longer use shared links to render HTML content in a web browser. If you created a website that directly displays HTML content from your Dropbox, it will no longer render in the browser. The HTML content itself will still remain in your Dropbox and can be shared.
Dropbox Pro and Business users: Beginning September 1, 2017, you can no longer render HTML content.
@abohannon adam, i think it is better just one collumn, col-sm-12 and then centralize the element with center-block or text-align, depending of the element
@abohannon It's better to use an offset. It would function the same, but offsets use less code, making the code more readable
Hello! I am trying to pass a URL to $.getJSON() method. The URL is the value of a string variable. How do I pass it. The current code below is not working:
var lnk = "";
function buildLnk(lat, long) {
  lnk =
    "https://api.darksky.net/forecast/.../" +
    lat +
    "," +
    long +
    "?callback=?";
  console.log(lnk);
}
$.getJSON(
  lnk
).then(function(data) {
  $("#p2").html(JSON.stringify(data));
});
I guess I cannot just pass the name of the variable in $.getJSON()... Any thoughts?
Hi, how can I use a string inside a regular expression in JavaScript like:
var regex_str = 'apples';
var str = 'Apples are round, and apples are juicy.';
var newstr = str.replace(/ + regex_str + /g, 'oranges');
Obviously it's not working in that way. So how can I put a string as a regex to str.replace() function's first argument?
This is not working either:
var regex_str = 'apples';
var str = 'Apples are round, and apples are juicy.';
var newstr = str.replace('/' + regex_str + '/g', 'oranges');
@padunk @RationalCoding yeah I realized that there is a regular expression constructor in JavaScript. But when I try to use it with this regular expression:
var re = RegExp("(?s)<(pre|code)[^<]*>.*?<\/(pre|code)>(*SKIP)(*F)|apples","g");
I'm getting SyntaxError: Invalid regular expression error. It's a legit regular expression and working perfectly well with preg_replace function of PHP. What is the actual problem I did not understand, please help me.
@HappyRedditor59 put a <br> tag between the elements.
Hi everyone, regarding the Twitchtv API, is it possible to nest a second getJSON? I used the first one for /streams/ to see if stream is online or not but need to also check from either /users/ or /channels/ if the account is already deactivated or user is just offline.
In hindsight, maybe checking the stream should be second getJSON. But still, the question still stands, can a second getJSON be nested within a first getJSON?
Hi
I'm stuck somewhere in javascript
I don't want a answer but a hint ;)
var contacts = [
    {
        "firstName": "Akira",
        "lastName": "Laine",
        "number": "0543236543",
        "likes": ["Pizza", "Coding", "Brownie Points"]
    },
    {
        "firstName": "Harry",
        "lastName": "Potter",
        "number": "0994372684",
        "likes": ["Hogwarts", "Magic", "Hagrid"]
    },
    {
        "firstName": "Sherlock",
        "lastName": "Holmes",
        "number": "0487345643",
        "likes": ["Intriguing Cases", "Violin"]
    },
    {
        "firstName": "Kristian",
        "lastName": "Vos",
        "number": "unknown",
        "likes": ["Javascript", "Gaming", "Foxes"]
    }
];
function lookUpProfile(firstName, prop){
// Only change code below this line
for (var i=0; i < contacts.length; i ++) {
  if (contacts[i].firstName == firstName){
    if (contacts[i].hasOwnProperty(prop)){
      return contacts[i][prop];
    }
  }else if (!contacts[i][prop]){
    return "No such property";
  }
// Only change code above this line
}
}
// Change these values to test your function
lookUpProfile("Bob", "number");
Hoang Thanh Tu
May 31 2017 14:13
@R0ulito it returns "no such contact" because the caller is lookUpProfile("Bob", "number");
no matching data in the contacts :D
h1tag
@h1tag
May 31 2017 14:13
@Fikry1 you can do it using css display: none or jQuery $("#channel").show() $("#channel").hide()
r0ulito
@hoangthanhtu the point is it return "No such contact" even for existing entries :)
Hoang Thanh Tu
@hoangthanhtu
May 31 2017 14:14
you can merge 2 line into 1 line
  if (contacts[i].firstName == firstName){
    if (contacts[i].hasOwnProperty(prop)){
to
  if (contacts[i].firstName == firstName && contacts[i].hasOwnProperty(prop)){
I think like this
for (var i=0; i < contacts.length; i ++) {
  if (contacts[i].firstName == firstName && contacts[i].hasOwnProperty(prop)){
      return contacts[i][prop];
  } else if (!contacts[i].hasOwnProperty(prop)){
// Only change code above this line
@Securiteru Nice work - you definitely put a lot of effort into the tribute page! Some feedback:
  • You have Bootstrap 4 added to your project settings, but you are using some Bootstrap 3 classes (img-responsive, center-block, col-xs-12).
  • Move all of your inline styles into CSS
  • Don't confuse <head> with <header>. One goes above the <body> tag, the other goes below.
  • In codepen, the <body> tag and everything above it should go in the codepen settings or you may get unexpected behavior.
Good work - not very often we see such a complete tribute page project
May 31 2017 15:36
@firou1925 Check your browser's developer console for errors. Ctrl+Shift+J on Windows/Linux. Command+Option+J on Mac.
Two issues: stringfy should be stringify and you are getting a cross origin error
To get past the cross origin error, use JSONP. Here's an explanation on that: https://www.sitepoint.com/jsonp-examples/
@Pagnito To temporarily change the color of an element, you could also consider CSS animations (e.g. https://css-tricks.com/almanac/properties/a/animation/). Not sure if it fits your use case, though.
whenever i go into large view my footer is jumping inside of the div above it? https://codepen.io/willybeans/pen/QvRQmb?editors=1100
@firou1925 navigator.geolocation is an asynchronous function, so the only way to use the data in other places in your code is to process it in the function(position) callback or with a Promise() object
var latitude,
    longitude;
navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(function(position) {
  latitude = position.coords.latitude;
  longitude = position.coords.longitude;
  console.log(latitude, longitude); // works here
  logThePosition(latitude, longitude);
});
function logThePosition(latitude, longitude) {
  console.log(latitude, longitude); // works here too
}
console.log(latitude, longitude); // undefined here
function inIframe () { try { return window.self !== window.top; } catch (e) { return true; } }
var currentQuote = '', currentAuthor = '', currentCategory = '';
function openURL(url){
Matúš Námešný
@LordMathis
it encodes the text to a valid uri so that you dont have spaces and special characters in the url
lhoward465
@lhoward465
May 31 2017 19:44
@onomesotu doesn't it say in the instructions to use an api?
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
May 31 2017 19:52
@onomesotu You'll need to build a hyperlink with your javascript, similar to this: https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text=hello%20world
That link tweets the text "hello world"
as described above, use encodeURIComponent() to convert spaces and other special characters to symbols that twitter will understand (like %20 for space)
Your javascript needs to simply append your quote text to the end of https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text=
lhoward465
@LordMathis float property shouldn't be added by the pull-left class?
@4javier pull-left and pull-right have been removed from bootstrap 4
Monica Parrillo
Hey - If I want to create a hyperlink from javascript with createElement('a') within a loop for creating elements how do I ensure it doesn't overwrites previous settings?
Jorge
@flawedLogic506
May 31 2017 21:08
@monicaparrillo the key is a parameter you have to pass in with the URL ..
i can't test it, cuz i would have to sign up and im too lazy to do that .. but if you are signed in, and you go to the GET endpoint , you can click on the TEST endpoint
and then i guess you will be presented with the URL you need
@LordMathis Thanks a lot, man! I used float-right class in place of pull-right as suggested in your link, and it worked both on parent div that on figure itself. I can choose one. Now that you already know my page, could you tell me why my caption (display:table-caption assigned) doesn't fill image width?
Jorge
remove the crossorin proxy call and instead add this to the end of your URL: &callback=?
Manuel
@manny45
May 31 2017 21:46
How do I fix it
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
May 31 2017 21:46
@manny45 To make your font-size adjustment work, use this:
.pageOne h1{
  padding:0;
  margin-top:0px;
  font-size:10.0em;
}
You had .h1 instead of h1
remove pull-right and use justify-content-end along with the nav-item class
