Hello! Is someone able to help me out with CSS figure and figure img pretty please? I'm trying to center something on my page but keep going round in circles!

Jun 04 2017 00:07

That's the million dollar question! I'm pretty new to this so getting a bit swamped with different methods.

I'd like to learn how to use CSS "figure" to accomplish what I'm trying to do: Center an image to the page and have a caption underneath it which is left aligned but sticking to the image margins

@CodKingNZ If you're using bootstrap, you will need to place it inside a container -> row -> column, like:
<div class="container">
  <div class="row">
    <div class="col">
      <figure class="figure">
        <img src="https://placehold.it/1600x900" class="figure-img img-fluid rounded" alt="A generic square placeholder image with rounded corners in a figure.">
        <figcaption class="figure-caption text-center">A caption for the above image.</figcaption>
      </figure>
    </div>
  </div>
</div>

its the for loop, youre testing the whole array on every button press

I'm doing the quote machine app, and I'm trying to make it where my button isn't bouncing all over the screen. Can someone tell me how to resolve this?
Tom
@moT01
Jun 04 2017 00:29
so lets say its the second turn, the computer hit two things, ...green and blue
you hit green it tests green, ...passes
Pagnito
@Pagnito
Jun 04 2017 00:29
alrite listening
Tom
@moT01
Jun 04 2017 00:30
then you hit blue, ...it tests green again first, ...and now your length of punched array is full (2)
and it goes on to the part where the two arrays are the same length
and doesn't get to test the blue one
Pagnito
@Pagnito
Jun 04 2017 00:30
hmmmm
i see what ur saying
Tom
@moT01
Jun 04 2017 00:31
you cycle through the whole array, on every button press, ...maybe if you just tested the current button press
Pagnito
@Pagnito
Jun 04 2017 00:31
but how come it works if i press like 5 or w/e many times and on the the 3rd lets say itll work
Tom
@moT01
Jun 04 2017 00:32
cause the lengths don't match and it doesn't get to that part of the code
Clinton Shepard
@Taslack
Jun 04 2017 00:32
@sinjecht Without seeing your code I can only take a wild guess.
Pagnito

i agree with u, but do u know y? cuz it prints out two arrays with same elements before the loop starts

@moT01
Jun 04 2017 00:34
its the way you test if it's the right button i think, ...probly a few ways to fix it
so lets do another example, ...
Pagnito
@Pagnito
Jun 04 2017 00:34
@sinjecht hey just to make ur future advice asking experience easier use the button above tab and close ur code with in these things
code
Tom
@moT01
Jun 04 2017 00:34
the computer goes three times, ...green, blue, yellow
Pagnito
@Pagnito
Jun 04 2017 00:34
@sinjecht ```
Tom
@moT01
Jun 04 2017 00:34
you hit green, it test for green, ...passes
then you hit blue, ...it test for green again, ...and then it tests for blue
your testing the whole sequence every button press, so when you hit the third button
it test green first again
and before i gets its i++
it makes the length test, passes that, and exits

Jun 04 2017 00:40
hold on tho, isnt that an else statement to the test
Clinton Shepard
@Taslack
Jun 04 2017 00:40
@sinjecht bound your quote box to a certain size and it should stop your button from moving. Remember that quotes + author should only be 140 characters, so you can pretty much guaruntee no text overflow by having the appropriate q box size.
Pagnito
@Pagnito
Jun 04 2017 00:40
hold lemme look inspect it more
Tom
@moT01
Jun 04 2017 00:41
it is, ...you could use some labels too
Clinton Shepard
@Taslack
Jun 04 2017 00:43
@sinjecht the position: fixed; then defining where it will go will basically unbind it from the q text. Play around with position settings until you get the hang of them.....its very important later on.

@ftcosta There is nothing wrong with how you are getting the data with $.getJson, its just has some funkiness that comes from how codepen uses iFrames and sets the CORS header. Just add onto your link what I provided and it will work in codepen.

@ftcosta @Taslack This should also work fine - without the need of adding a proxy as a dependency to your code: https://formato.digital/repo/json/quote.json?callback=?
CORS doesn't have much to do with codepen or iframes - it's all about one domain name requesting data from another domain

Hi i am working on the seek and destroy problem.
the definition of function take 1 parrameter.
but when being used down, it take more than just 1 parameter.
anyone have i dea how to use it?

function destroyer(arr) {

return arr;
}

destroyer([1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3], 2, 3);

@ftcosta Is that your server by chance?
You could also host your JSON for free on github, if you really want to get around the proxy issue, or configure your server to allow the request.
Anyway - it's a good start for your quote machine, and it's working :)

Clinton Shepard

Jun 04 2017 02:45
@fdemaa Your sizeing issue is caused by you hardcoding the size to the root em(rem)....maybe just go with em.
@fdemaa Nope, I am wrong there is something else going on there.
@fdemaa I actually like the JS part, but it depends on the individual how hard it is.
For me I had a hard time with asyncrouns junk. The base JS came easy to me.
@fdemaa All you gotta do is just jump into it, only way to learn.

Hey all,

I just got to upgrade from a 1 monitor to 3 monitor setup fortunately. My work space isn't large enough for 3 widescreen monitors so trying out the vertical monitor thing. I don't see myself using it for coding at least not with the current setup it's not comfortable. Maybe later though. So I thought about turning that monitor to like a 768 X 1280 resolution monitor to mimic mobile.

A: Would this mimic mobile with responsive designs? Using that number based off bootstrap grid options.

B: Can you think of any better use for this monitor in a vertical set up to the left of my main monitor?

@Dodgecole1 And by responsive design meaning it should display what I would see if I opened it on mobile? Just seems like a handy way to quick reference a mobile design. So my though it left monitor in the 768X1280 resolution then 2 regular widescreen monitors with higher resolution. So thinking keep webpage i'm working on open on left and right monitors and sublime on middle monitor. Left monitor would be what I would see on mobile (if i'm thinking right) and right would be what large devices see. Is my assumption correct?
thought is not though it

hi all, please I am having an issue converting a json array to display in at table on the fly. I have something like

data = row1col1,row2col1,row1col2,row2col2,row1col3,row2col3,row1col4,row2col4. someone please assist.

i am using jquery.
@twonjee2002 can you elaborate more?

Jun 04 2017 06:29
ok i @FlawlessSardine I am sending using ajax to send message to the server and getting the response above. Now I need to display that message to the user
the data is like this
data = 123456,654321,qwe,ewq,22,33,76666,87666
so basically there are 3 columns but can be any number of rows
so i want this to appear in a table for the user
row1col1,row2col1,row1col2,row2col2,row1col3,row2col3
col means column please
h1tag
@h1tag
Jun 04 2017 06:35
@twonjee2002 you'll have to first separate the data into an array, then use a nested for loop to build the table
Adetunji Adegbite
@twonjee2002
Jun 04 2017 06:35
let me paste what i have tried.
data2 = 12345678,87654321,123456,654321,test test, tom harry
for ( var i = 0, k = data2.length/3; i < k; i+=2 ) {
var eachreportparameter = data2[i];
var col = data2[i+1];
var firstreportparameter = data2[0];
                $("div#div2 form#form").append(
                    "<br><div><label id='"+eachreportparameter+"' for='label' name='lab'>"+'*'+eachreportparameter+
                    "</label><div><input name='condition' type='text' style='position: relative; left: 30px; width: 30%'>"+col+"</input></div></div>");
              '+"id="+'"'+eachreport+'"'+">"+eachreport+"</a></li>"

            }
            $("div#div2 form#form").append("<br><button type='submit' id='butt'>Submit</button>").html();

            console.log("full form data is "+data2);

            arrlngth = k;
        },
        error: function(request, status, error) {

Hello everyone, I have a problem with last advanced front-end project, the Simon game.
The problem is that, when it's supposed to highlight all colors already in the array, it does at the same time so the user does not see which one is first and which one is last
could someone help me out with that?
Matúš Námešný
@LordMathis
Jun 04 2017 08:03
@tpondant Try highlighting the next item in array when the timer for the previous runs out
it's the length() function that is doing the highlighting?
try refactoring it so instead of one for cycle it will be recursive where each time you pass the next index of array
tpondant
@tpondant
Jun 04 2017 08:13
yes length() is the highlighting function
@LordMathis ok I try to understand what you told me and make the modifications
tpondant
@tpondant
Jun 04 2017 08:30
@LordMathis I tried doing as you said, but I can't manage to do it correctly
I've tried setting a timeout which would be recursive for each item in the array, but how do I pass a unique highlight function if we don't know which colour is going to be highlighted?
because my highlighting function adds a specific class (like "lightRed") if it is the color red the next item in the array
Matúš Námešný
@LordMathis
Jun 04 2017 08:40
In the recursive function first you check witch color is simon[index] then you highlight it, then you set up timer and when that timer runs out you remove the highlighting class and call the next recursion with index++
@tpondant also don't forget to check the end of recursion when the index===simon.length
tpondant
@tpondant
Jun 04 2017 08:47
@LordMathis Thanks, I think I get it. But if you look at my code, didn't I already check if color was green, red, blue or yellow? I'm going to try removing the 'removeClass' part and put it after the timer and not inside it? Do you think this is the right way or I'm completely mistaken?

Jun 04 2017 08:48
well it doesn't work, now it just highlights the last color of the array
I really have a problem understanding this timeout function
Matúš Námešný
@LordMathis
Jun 04 2017 08:54
setTimeout(function a, timeout): The function a will run after timeout. So what you want to do is to highligh a color and after timeout unhighlight it and pass onto the next item in array
@tpondant You need to put the removeClass(...) inside the setTimeout
tpondant
@tpondant
Jun 04 2017 08:56
@LordMathis yes that's what I'd done before, but it didn't work
now I've done this
for the "green color"
for (var q = 0; q < simon.length; q++) {
if (simon[q] === "green") {
$(".green").addClass('lightGreen');
setTimeout(function() {
},350);
       $('.green').removeClass('lightGreen');
}
since it's a for loop, when an "if" is executed, shouldn't it go automatically to the next item in the array?
that's what I don't get and thought I did
q++ should do the trick right?
Matúš Námešný
@LordMathis
Jun 04 2017 08:58
I'm not sure on that one either
thats why I suggested recursion
that way you control when you pass on the next item
tpondant
@tpondant
Jun 04 2017 08:59
@LordMathis so a forloop does not work for recursion?
Matúš Námešný
@LordMathis
Jun 04 2017 09:04
function length(i) {
  if (i === simon.length) return;

  if (simon[q] === "green") {
     $(".green").addClass('lightGreen');
    setTimeout(function() {
      $('.green').removeClass('lightGreen');
      return length(i++);
    },350);
  }
  else if (simon[q] === "red") {
    $(".red").addClass('lightRed');
    setTimeout(function() {
       $('.red').removeClass('lightRed');
      return length(i++);
    },350);
  }
  else if (simon[q] === "yellow") {
    $(".yellow").addClass('lightYellow');
    setTimeout(function() {
      $('.yellow').removeClass('lightYellow');
      return length(i++);
    },350);
  }
  else if (simon[q] === "blue") {
    $(".blue").addClass('lightBlue');
    setTimeout(function() {
      $('.blue').removeClass('lightBlue');
      return length(i++);
    },350);
  }
}
and you call it with length(0);
slight typo: the q in the program should be i

one suggestion, make addColor to only add new color to simon array without highlighting and call length(0) after addColor

Try just putting seconds-- in the interval by itself and see what happens ;)

There's no good reason to not use 4. Flexbox has support in 98% of the world browser use.
Only time you would need 3 is for an older clientele based site/app.

       var test = /*13 +*/ str.charCodeAt(i) + 13 ;//wrong return value

I don't know

      // Making an array of each letters to decode
      splited = str.split(''),
      // Spliting the string in argument of rot13
      uncoded = [];

   // --- Test Code --- //  index = alpha.indexOf(splited[3]);

      for (var i = 0; i < str.length; i++){
        var index = alpha.indexOf(splited[i]);
        // It is the index of the char to decode
        if(index !== -1){
        uncoded.push(alpha[index+13]);

          // If index is not -1 (meaning it's in array) we push the letter from alpha + 13
        }
        if (index === -1){
          uncoded.push(splited[i]);

          // If index is -1 (meaning it's not in array) we push the letter from the string instead
        }

  }

// --- Test Code --- //  return alpha[index+13];
  return uncoded.join('');

// Then join the array to return sentences decoded

@sadan49 you should focus on using just html and css .As you keep learning new stuff you can update it to be more responsive for now just focus on making a simple yet elegant html page as a portfolio page
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Jun 04 2017 18:25
@sadan49 - that's what you're here to learn! ;) So as @adityac0620 said, you should focus on a nice page using HTML and CSS. The freeCodeCamp lessons do introduce Bootstrap, which is basically a set of CSS styles that you can use. But there is a lot to learn as far as the best use of Bootstrap. I found the Bootstrap pages and lessons at w3schools.com/bootstrap to be really helpful to me. Especially the "Themes" section, where they walk through the layout and implementation of some nice portfolio-style pages using Bootstrap. I used it as a guide and lesson for setting up my page. And as @adityac0620 said - it's something that you can start with as a simple page and develop it further as you go along and learn more. You can basically do it without knowing any JS at all, although there are a couple bootstrap JS plugins that are commonly used for the responsive navbar, etc. That's my input on something that might help you.

if it's hard to use bootstrap, you can try using semantic ui https://semantic-ui.com/ the great thing about this one is that you don't have to grab the entire cdn, you only have to grab the cdn for a specific element. For example, if you only want the menu, you only need to include https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/semantic-ui/2.2.10/components/menu.css

Small issue: when i click on my nav elements they direct me to the middle of the parts of the page i want, but i want them to go to the top of the section rather than awkwardly in the middle of it. Should i add additional div's that sit above these elements to fix this issue, or is there a work around already in place for bootstrap that im unaware of? https://codepen.io/willybeans/pen/ZyEjyb

@willybeans the link points to <h1>Portfolio</h1> so when you click the link it scrolls so that the h1 element is at the top of the page.
Point the link to the div containing the portfolio
Same goes for the other links
You already have it right in the about div

@willybeans i managed it by add a "blank" row on top of the page with height of 70px and the right ID

<div class="wrapper">
    <div id="about" class="row" style="height:70px;"></div>

    <div  class="internalbox container-fluid">

@ericvoigt If you break the 12 columns/row rule for an image grid, all the images need to be the same size
(native resolution)
For example, replace all your images with an image that's the same size and it will work fine:
   <div class="row">
    <div class="col-xs-6 col-md-3 gallery img"><img src="https://placehold.it/640x480" class="img-responsive"></div>
    <div class="col-xs-6 col-md-3 gallery img"><img src="https://placehold.it/640x480" class="img-responsive"></div>
    <div class="col-xs-6 col-md-3 gallery img"><img src="https://placehold.it/640x480" class="img-responsive"></div>
    <div class="col-xs-6 col-md-3 gallery img"><img src="https://placehold.it/640x480" class="img-responsive"></div>
  </div>
(and use md-3 instead of md-4 if you have 4 images)
