var myUrl="";

navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(function(position) {
$("#location").html("latitude: " + position.coords.latitude + "<br>longitude: " + position.coords.longitude);
myUrl = "https://api.darksky.net/forecast/42965734158488b85d22b2e6187b2fab/"+ position.coords.latitude + "," + position.coords.longitude + "";

@roxxid Your approach is correct, only that API requires you to use JSONP. If you look at your browser's debug console (not the one in codepen), you should be seeing a cross origin error. Here's a few ways to use JSONP: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/5943630/basic-example-of-using-ajax-with-jsonp

JD Tadlock

use flexbox instead of the classes from bootstrap 4
Lewis

Anyone handy with React? I'm struggling to get this working: https://codepen.io/Lewis65/pen/xdYrxK
It's a React todo app. It's my first React project I've done (mostly) by myself. But I can't get the input field to empty after adding an item. Changing the newItem value to "" in the state changes the value that is in the virtual DOM, but doesn't cause the input to re-render. What am I missing?
Manish Giri
@Manish-Giri
Jun 09 2017 02:33
@Lewis65 newItem={this.state.newItem.text}
the prop you're passing to <TodoAdd> is already the string
so when accessing the value in TodoAdd
value={this.props.newItem.text}

You will learn other technologies later on, as you get more comfortable with front end.

Gulsvi

Jun 09 2017 02:38
My suggestion is to stick with what you have been taught here in the Free Code Camp challenges: Bootstrap 3. Once you get comfortable with it, moving to Bootstrap 4 will be very easy.
Don't spend too much time on your portfolio, you'll likely want to rewrite it once you get better at Front End

@Manish-Giri Because I will assign the item with an id when it enters the items array for display in TodoList. Just for consistency, I suppose.

@Manish-Giri Yes I might as well use that. So, when I added newItem = '' to the addItem method, the value of newItem changes in the virtual DOM but not in the view. What should I do to make sure the value displayed in the input field and the value in the state are matching?

@abohannon It's just wanting you to get the charCode of a letter given and convert that to either the letter value 13 places before or 13 places after
You would use a combination of letter.charCodeAt() and String.fromCharCode(integer);
Try this in your console and see what you get
console.log(String.fromCharCode(65));

inline-block will add 5px to the right of the element. You can overcome this by setting margin-right: -5px on inline-block elements. But flexbox makes it much smoother and error free.

JD Tadlock

@jdtdesigns i have learnt html css and javascript , is it sufficient to learn in deep and I won't feel difficulty ?
JD Tadlock
@jdtdesigns
Jun 09 2017 04:16

@Gr8ayu You've just started all 3. You have many more years to go of learning so now's the time to dive in. FCC is a challenge platform. Because of this, it will rush through and give you challenge after challenge increasing in difficulty by large amounts in-between. Diving deep into HTML and CSS is very important if you're going to be working with front end. After feeling comfortable to make any design you can dive deep into JS.

Of course, it's all up to you. I'm just giving you my suggestion from years of experience. ;)

Any help would be much appreciated! https://codepen.io/Mebula/pen/mwVPEo
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Jun 09 2017 05:17
@Mebula - a couple things first - you have these "img-fluid" strings as part of your image attributes, but they should really be class="img-fluid" because those are class names. since you have two classes there, it should beclass="img-fluid center-block", although I think that center-block was changed in Bootstrap V4? I think that you achieve the same thing in Bootstrap V4 using class="d-block mx-auto". So those should probably be class="img-fluid d-block mx-auto"? You have to make sure that you are using all of the Bootstrap V4 classes, there were many changes. There is a document that has the migration information: https://v4-alpha.getbootstrap.com/migration/.

callback=? is jQuery's way of doing a JSONP request. Wikipedia lets you avoid doing a JSONP request by specifying origin=*
JSONP is a way to avoid cross-origin security issues. Requesting data from another server

I don't think so, it's easier to use but I don't think it's necessary!
I know for sure you're not required to use Jquery
so HTML+CSS and even BS is optional
all you have to do is obey the User Stories
ZaynMalloc
@ZaynMalloc

@jjj0k3rrrr You do not need to use bootstrap. The tribute page is fairly simple, so you could just use vanilla css

@gmojo the code i sent you does an ajax call to get a location, then displays that info then does an ajax call to get weather information then displays that info, should be a good example of how the weather app works, good luck

@gmojo by the way, the CORS work around is included in the example, you if you replace your location and weather api urls you should be able to get your data then use it as needed. the location and weather data is sent to the console for the example.

Better?

  1. align headings to the left ✓
  2. start of paragraphs also to the left ✓ ( as in no indentation? )
  3. delete the padding-left from the first word ( ✖︎ not sure what that means, maybe text-indent? )
  4. align everything vertically into 1 line ( ✖︎ did I do that? )
  5. try to make bigger vertical paddings between heading and paragraph ✓ ( is that enough? )
  6. try to make bigger vertical paddings between 2 paragraphs

@Josie-N it looks much better :)

  1. was no indentation - done
  2. yes, now it's perfect
  3. maybe little less (same space from heading to paragraph as from paragraph to paragraph - so I can tell immediately what text belongs to what heading..

  4. also try to make bigger left-right padding of the 2 columns with text - bigger space will separate them more clearly and it will be easier to read (you will not jump from left column to right) and it will be great :)

if you use %'s or em's as your measure, those are responsive
this is from stack overflow (somebody who asked similar question)
For padding/margins use em, normally you will want to space your elements out relative to the size of your text. With em (the with of an 'M' character) you can quite easily say I want approximately 1 character spacing here.

@Mebula :point_up: June 9, 2017 9:26 AM - it takes some time to get used to bootstrap. One thing that would potentially be a little easier would be to stick with V3 for now, because any of the introductory lessons are based on that version, as well as a lot of the lessons and examples that are out there. V4 is (unfortunately) the CodePen default, and there were significant changes or at least a substantial number of changes that you have to adapt to. That migration document helps, especially if you have some familiarity with V3.l

the function(json) means that json is the variable in which the information is coming

So i'm starting the Twitch project, I looked at the workaround wind-bow link, and i'm just trying to get an idea of how to work with it.
I tested https://wind-bow.glitch.me/twitch-api/streams/?game=Overwatch
it returned

error: "forbidden",
status: 403,
msg: "unaccepted route: streams/ - see https://wind-bow.gomix.me/ for infos"

what am i doing wrong?

@SwarmSE You can only query by streamers across the three different endpoints (streams/channels/users). For the streamer with the name "overwatch", it would be:

@Josie-N There are options for the bootstrap tooltips listed here: http://getbootstrap.com/javascript/#tooltips-options

  var options = {
    placement: "left", // top, bottom, left, right, auto
    delay: { "show": 500, "hide": 100 },
  };
  $('[data-toggle="tooltip"]').tooltip(options);

To see how to style it - study how bootstrap sets it up in their CSS. Search for ".tooltip" here: https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/twitter-bootstrap/3.3.7/css/bootstrap.css

@SkyC0der interesting. I guess I was wondering about get requests and how to format them with the twitch api.
this URL - https://wind-bow.glitch.me/twitch-api/streams/?game=Overwatch
was intended to retrieve all streams of the game overwatch. does it look like it's formatted incorrectly? trying to wrap my head around how these api calls should be formatted.
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 09 2017 16:34
@SwarmSE The free code camp mirror doesn't provide that functionality - it only lets you query by individual streamer accounts, not by game. The only format is the one I showed you above, unfortunately.
  • https://wind-bow.glitch.me/twitch-api/<<<endpoint>>>/<<<account name>>>
If you use the full Twitch API, you will be able to access many additional features.

@eweiss17 ah gotcha, no that was great how you labeled everything lol i think thats why i didnt really understand the array method .filter, im assuming it works the same way? for example,
var newArray = oldArray.filter(function(val){etc...});
@eweiss17 val being the data from oldArraY?

yes you are correct, val is essentialy 'oldArray'

@eweiss17 its just a weird concept to me how the variable in a function is the data to thing retrieved from methods/variables in the same line lol

Eric Weiss

If you saw the code that .filter() uses, I bet it would make more sense
it requires a parameter(value) essentially
because if you didn't include that (value) it wouldn't be able to know the contents

@fullmetal7777 It is confusing with those predefined methods. .indexOf() does not require a function at all and works

@jvsole17 honestly i have no idea why this comes out so badly in codepen, on my end it looks good, but heres mine. https://codepen.io/fullmetal7777/pen/bWzegK I basically tried to do everything on my own without bootstrap and tried to do a bunch of different things to expose myself to everything.

@eweiss17 the city that I get back from google is a constant variable. I would like to make it responsive

Andrew Hickman
@ahickman3
Jun 09 2017 17:28
@jvsole17 this is how it should look http://prntscr.com/fhwgcm another big reason not to use bootstrap on your first page is to really learn the theory behind how everything works and try to get it as responsive as you can. Obviously making it mobile ready would take a ton of time, and not work it, but try and get it to scale with half of your screen width, etc. Guarantee after that youll be SO much better at css/html and youll fly through your portfolio using bootstrap (like i did)

@jvsole17 oh gotcha. Yeah exactly. I had a friend tell me the most important thing to do first is to design your page, then actually code it. So just look at a bunch of people tribute pages, point out things you like and want to do on your page, then come up with a design on paper, and lastly code it

@fdemaa for me though i make sure i fully understand every concept before moving on. If its arrays and that kind of stuff that confusing you, its hard to say since i took a java/c/c++ classes and already had that info down. Probably looking up some kind of youtube video course or online or (gasp) a book. I have a great book i used in school that REALLY helped it if you want the name.
keep in mind i took one class in each, so enough for you to learn the basic and understand, but not enough to know how to use it in the real world
