@CSFillis Another option - use what we learn in Free Code Camp. The grey box is bootstrap's jumbotron class: http://getbootstrap.com/components/#jumbotron
The image uses the thumbnail class: http://getbootstrap.com/css/#images-shapes and the title below the image is the caption class: http://getbootstrap.com/components/#thumbnails-custom-content

Sam
@sdedison
Jun 12 2017 01:32
Hey all - having trouble getting a bootstrap row to have some vertical space below a navbar - without changing the position of the background image. Anyone able to give some advice? https://codepen.io/sdedison/pen/xdNWRy?editors=1100
Using an aboutMe class to add the background image to a div - then adding a margin spacer class to the row div within that one
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 12 2017 01:36
@sdedison I'm not sure I understand - you want to move the text down, but not the background image?
Clinton Shepard
@Taslack
Jun 12 2017 01:36
@sdedison Your going to have to add some padding to you top section your Page1
Sam
@sdedison
Jun 12 2017 01:37
@SkyC0der yep that's exactly it!
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 12 2017 01:37
@sdedison You could move your spacer-xlg class to your <h1> tag - remove it from your row.
(Or move it to the column where you have that semi-transparent background)
Sam
@sdedison
Jun 12 2017 01:40
@SkyC0der I was thinking that, but the grey background gets stretched. The text ends up where I want it, but the box then extends from the navbar, instead of sitting in the middle of the background image
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 12 2017 01:41
@sdedison To expand on my second comment:
<div class="col-md-6 offset-md-1 text-left transparent-bg spacer-xlg">
^^ Put it on that column
Sam
@sdedison
Jun 12 2017 01:41
@SkyC0der Ah! adding it to the column worked
@SkyC0der do I need to add the spacer then to each col in that row?

Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 12 2017 01:43
@sdedison No, additional columns will align next to that one. Additional rows will flow below it.
As you can see - your "hello world" is also 150px below the top of your aboutMe div

Jun 12 2017 01:47
@Taslack it is in my function to convert Fahrenheit to Celcius but I don't have it declared as a variable
do I need to do that?
```function displayTemp(fTemp, c){
if(c) return Math.round((fTemp - 32)*(5/9)) + "° C";
return Math.round(fTemp) + "° F";
}
is how I have fTemp
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 12 2017 01:53
@skd726 fTemp is only defined in that function:
function displayTemp(fTemp, c){
  if(c) return Math.round((fTemp - 32)*(5/9)) + "° C";
  return Math.round(fTemp) + "° F";
  console.log(fTemp) // you get the temperature here
}
console.log(fTemp) // undefined here, because it is out of scope
Clinton Shepard
@Taslack
Jun 12 2017 01:53
@skd726 So your just defining that var in that function. You are not going to be able to utilize that variable anywhere else outside of the function.
@skd726 it should be just fine since its a locale variable instead of global....the same thing if your just adding that variable inside of the jquery function.
If you want your footer stuck to the bottom, give your body and footer a height, wrap your main content in a <div>, and then give your main content the height of calc(body height - footer height)
like:
body {
  height: 100vh;
}
main {
  height: calc(100vh - 50px);
}
footer {
  height: 50px;
}
XMLHttpRequest cannot load https://quotesondesign.com/wp-json/posts?filter[orderby]=rand&filter[posts_per_page]=1&callback=%22. The 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header has a value 'http://null' that is not equal to the supplied origin. Origin 'null' is therefore not allowed access.
@M-C-Haker Ya that is people, they will do the least amount possible, but I have seen some good portfolios. What you should be getting from doing these things and then having to go out and look for information is that very lesson. You really need to know how to go out and find how to do things, without a handy little lesson laid out for you. That skill is way more valuable out in the job market then memorization of what tag does what.
@teevik It animates. I just need to replace the id of the canvas. I don't know how to do that
teevik
Oh, didn't see it
Isn't it icon.set(canvas id, icon) ?
teevik
@teevik
Jun 12 2017 08:11
Also, i believe you need to use skycons[icon name] when setting icon
Nvm
Ashan Mohammed
Jun 12 2017 08:13
@teevik didn't get that. Can you please explain with a example
teevik
@teevik
Jun 12 2017 08:14
icons.set("skyicon", list[2]); where canvas id is skyicon
Also, you don't need that array with icon names. Darksky gives the correct icon included in json
function phoneticLookup(val) {
var result = {
    "delta":"Denver",
    "echo":"Easy",
    "foxtrot":"Frank"
  };
  // Only change code above this line
  return result;
}
// Change this value to test
phoneticLookup("charlie");
anybody?
Clinton Shepard
@Taslack
Jun 12 2017 08:37
@deathtracer so to access an object you just need to call it. So result.charlie would equal Chicago
@deathtracer Here is the w3 answer to what you need. https://www.w3schools.com/js/js_objects.asp
@deathtracer Ah your on the switch.....w3 also has the answer you may need.
Jun 12 2017 08:47
help me out man! @jimtryon
Jim Tryon
@jimtryon
Jun 12 2017 08:48
@deathtracer You need to create a key/value pair for the switch/case statements and then you need to return lookup[val]
Clinton Shepard
@Taslack
Jun 12 2017 08:52
@deathtracer so keys are not strings.....aka remove your quotes.
object = {key: "value aka string/number/boolean"}
@deathtracer From w3schools.com
"Do Not Declare Strings, Numbers, and Booleans as Objects!"
shivam goel
@deathtracer
Jun 12 2017 08:55
but thats not working @Taslack
@jimtryon could get the part where u have to create a key/value pair ?
Clinton Shepard
@Taslack
Jun 12 2017 08:56
@deathtracer Are you just returning results....in the function are you passing the val into result somewhere?
shivam goel
@deathtracer
Jun 12 2017 08:56
could'nt
exactly that is the problem i am passing val as the argument but returning result..
@Taslack
Clinton Shepard
@Taslack
Jun 12 2017 08:57
@deathtracer In the example they show it, what does alpha[2] =?
@deathtracer Post your current code.
@deathtracer all of it.
shivam goel
@deathtracer
Jun 12 2017 08:58
function phoneticLookup(val) {
  var result = {
    "alpha":"Adams",
    "bravo":"Boston",
    "charlie":"Chicago",
    "delta":"Denver",
    "echo":"Easy",
    "foxtrot":"Frank"
  };
  // Only change code above this line
  return result;
}
// Change this value to test
phoneticLookup("charlie");
alpha[2] = Y
as they have defined above in the example
Clinton Shepard
@Taslack
Jun 12 2017 09:02
@deathtracer So have a function that accepts a var named val....but then you dont use that variable anywhere inside your function. Right now you are just passing everything in result. What would you need to do to get a specific key? And why do you still have quotes around the keys?
Look at the example in the challenge.....like how they got "Y" out of the variable alpha.
shivam goel
@deathtracer
Jun 12 2017 09:04
@Taslack i made some changes right now.. check this out
function phoneticLookup(val) {
  var result = "";
  val = {
    alpha:"Adams",
    bravo:"Boston",
    charlie:"Chicago",
    delta:"Denver",
    echo:"Easy",
    foxtrot:"Frank"
  };
  result = val;
  // Only change code above this line
  return result;
}
// Change this value to test
phoneticLookup("charlie");
but here we are using string... so whenever there is a string you have to use quotes thats the rule i think so beacause they are not keywords...
Clinton Shepard
@Taslack
Jun 12 2017 09:06
@deathtracer they are when you use them as an object.
look at the w3schools link I sent you...their examples are very spot on. They should be since they are the standard.
Hii
Was going through Webpack Node-API and Webpack Deve Middleware... Have tried to implement the same, but I am not able to use:
import "./scss/index.scss"
Above one gives me an @import Syntax error
Also I am using different third party libraries inside React Components, like mapbox-gl and turf.js, which I am using by imports and enabling:
new webpack.ProvidePlugin({
    mapboxgl: 'mapbox-gl',
    turf: "@turf/turf"
  }),
Above plugin....
But this give me compilation error while starting the Node Server... How to run ReactJS with Third Party Libraries and Sass compilation done on Webpack through Node Server, as Normally the Webpack Conf works perfectly if I run the server via webpack-dev-server
Any Help is Appreciated, as I am trying to move my full fledged frontend React Single Page app to Server side rendering.... Universal React I mean
mapbox-gl.js:404
"use strict";module.exports=self;
                            ^
ReferenceError: self is not defined
getting this error while starting the server via node server.js, where webpack-dev-middleware is already loaded
0 1 2 3 --> length is 4
ok i think i kinda get it so length is 4 because it uses normal counting starting from 1 but arrays start from 0?
so it has to b smaller than 4? otherwise it loops again cos it will include 4?
should stop at 3?
Now I want to add a navigation bar at the top, but I already used elements h1 to h5 and want to use h6 for the navigation bar, but then it starts all the way down below my h5 element (also moving my picture down) How can I add something before h1, h2, etc. without having to change all of them...?
This is pretty basic but I am blind or what and I can’t figure it out. The sectors of the circle are buttons and they should change color when clicked. They have ids from #b1 to #b4. I used styles like:
@SkyC0der i want to appear only home but a little smaller and the "about, contact and news" to appear as 3 bars
but there is using js and bootstrap, and for now i don't want that, i want to fully understand css first.
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 12 2017 12:57
@bytao7mao You will probably want to start by building a separate version of your navbar - get the CSS and the HTML the way you want. Incorporate that into your existing navbar, and then hide/show certain classes at different screen sizes.
That's basically what bootstrap does - they hide the normal links and then show a "collapse" menu at smaller screen sizes
Marius Nicolae
@bytao7mao
Jun 12 2017 12:59
indeed
starting with @media querries?
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 12 2017 13:01
You will use media queries to control when things change size and appear/disappear, yes.
If you want the menu to slide down, like the bootstrap menu, you will want to use javascript too
Marius Nicolae
@bytao7mao
Jun 12 2017 13:03
so 1. i will create another navbar with the 3 bars and give property display: none while the size of screeen is min 480 and max 1080 ?
no, i don't want to slide down
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 12 2017 13:08
@bytao7mao That could work - consider other screen sizes though, mobile, tablet, laptop, desktop can all have different screen sizes
@ChrisAB74 A few issues with your code:
background represents an element not a class name or ID. I think you want .background
If it's a div - you need to also give it a height.
There's also the issue that @AlexanderDom mentions. The CSS properties you are using are incorrect.
I think it should be this:
.background {
  background-image: url(https://cdn.pixabay.com/photo/2016/03/16/11/16/background-1260304_960_720.jpg);
hey all, can anyone point me in the right direction for designing grids for the calculator buttons, where some buttons occupy different heights, but the next row of buttons still needs to happen?
I've got it ... but it's ugly. What is the correct way to do this ? the last two buttons zero and the decimal do funky things when the screen size gets shrunk too far because of the wonky -50px margin I put on them... to shift them up
@willwaymel It will be easier to let the buttons follow the document flow. All buttons should have identical margin and padding. You should only need to position your equals button - and you can do that with absolute positioning along with top/right/left/bottom properties.
@willwaymel You should only need absolute positioning for your equals button. Let the 0 and . align left like the other buttons
So, remove this:
    top: 1px;
}
You took the equals button out of the document flow - so it doesn't affect the position of the other buttons
@SkyC0der I wasn't sure which thing had to have absolute positioning, I had made the whole container have it (that obviously didn't work) so then I stopped on that suggestion since the equals button was already where it should be... me trying to interpret directions...
Jun 12 2017 14:50
Hello @vineetkumarr260 ! That's because openweather api uses http, and codepen allows https only. Unfortunatelly, I don't know how to solve this.
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 12 2017 14:51
@vineetkumarr260 Codepen requires HTTPS now, so the API you use must support HTTPS. Open Weather Map, unfortunately, does not support HTTPS unless you pay for a premium plan. It's recommended to use the Dark Sky API for the weather now - they support HTTPS for free.
@eweiss17 That project is the first in the curriculum that requires some real thought around absolute positioning of elements.
Hi all, using nav-pills for navbar. Anyone know how to make the nav-pills fixed without it modifying the h1 and h2 elements? Tried position:fixed with h1 and h2 in a sep class and same class as nav-pills, nav went fixed but h1 and h2 then moved to top of page instead of staying central. Here is code: <div class="page-one text-center">
<ul class="nav nav-pills">
<li>
<a href="#">Name</a>
</li>
<li class="pull-right">
<a href="#p4">Contact Me</a>
<li class="pull-right">
</li>
<li class="pull-right">
so i can't figure out this challenge. It wants me to add a number to the end of the array and then remove the first element. nextInLine function should return the element thats removed. But i can't figure out exactly what i need to do. I know i need to use possible the .push() or .shift() functions. Its just a matter of how. ...
function nextInLine(arr, item) {
 arr = [1,2,3,4,5];
 item = testArr;// Your code here
  testArr.push();
  testArr.shift();
  return item;  // Change this line
}
// Test Setup
var testArr = [1,2,3,4,5];
// Display Code
console.log("Before: " + JSON.stringify(testArr));
console.log(nextInLine(testArr, 6)); // Modify this line to test
console.log("After: " + JSON.stringify(testArr));
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
@zanerogers1990 For a bit of a hint - When you use .push(), you have to tell it what to push onto the array. When you use .shift(), it will tell you what got removed.
Alexander Domikov
@zanerogers1990 so .push() function adds something at the end of an array, but if you don't put the "something" inside () it not gonna be added ;)
I'm trying to make a tic tac toe ai with a minmax algorithm and I'm having error messages around when I recursively call the function (it's saying move.score or result.score is undefined). I was wondering if there were any errors in this code?
function minmax (newBoard){
  var openSpots = emptySpots(newBoard)
  var moves = [];
  var restorePlayerTurn = playerTurn;
  //calculates how many time function has run to determine how close to win each board variation is
  depth++
  //checks winstate 1 is human player 2 is cpu
  if (checkWinState(newBoard, 2)){
     return {score: 10};
   } else if (checkWinState(newBoard, 1)){
     return {score: -10};
   } else if (checkStalemate(newBoard)){
     return {score: 0};
   }
  for (var i = 0; i < openSpots.length; i++){
    //saves index of move
    var move = {};
    move.index = openSpots[i];
    //changes the board alternating between player/cpu turns
    if (playerTurn){
     newBoard[openSpots[i]] = 1;
     playerTurn = false;
   } else {
     newBoard[openSpots[i]] = 2;
     playerTurn = true;
   }
    //recursively fills board
    var result = minmax(newBoard);
    move.score = result.score;
    //resets the newBoard array for the next play
    newBoard[openSpots[i]] = 0;
    //fills an array with scores
    moves.push(move);
  }
@Josie-N The other question to ask is why there is spacing between your divs as well. This is how elements with display inline-block work
Markus Ivancsics
@ivancsicsmarkus
Jun 12 2017 16:26
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 12 2017 16:26
Ideally, if you want 5 elements to take up the full width with a 1px border around, you would do: width: calc(20vw - 2px) (the 2px accounts for the border of 1px on each side)
But, you're still going to have spacing between the elements unless you do some trickery, like setting the font-size to 0
See this article for a more in-depth explanation @Josie-N https://css-tricks.com/fighting-the-space-between-inline-block-elements/
