Hi guys, I was in here asking about this last night but I couldn't stay too long. I'm on my first project, and I can't manage to get an image to be responsive and centered. I tried this:
  <div class="row">
<div class="col-md-2"></div>
    <div class="col-md-8">
      <img class="img-responsive" src="http://www.azquotes.com/picture-quotes/quote-i-was-captured-for-life-by-chemistry-and-by-crystals-dorothy-hodgkin-71-12-96.jpg"></div>

Tom
@moT01
Jun 16 2017 04:13
click the api button at the botton right, there's some examples how to use their api
you want to use jquery's .getJSON http://api.jquery.com/jquery.getjson/ or .ajax http://api.jquery.com/jquery.ajax/ to get the quotes to your page
@JasonCorp84 sounds like it depends what you have to work with
Csaba Balogh

there is a section there: icon: "clear-night",
is it an actual icon or just an ID for the icon ?

in the json data
looks like an id for an icon, ...no url i take it?
Csaba Balogh
@JasonCorp84
Jun 16 2017 04:20
So it means I have to build a switch case for this for all posibble icons ?
or there is a more efficient solution ?
Tom
@moT01
Jun 16 2017 04:22
you could just make a json object
instead of a switch
var icons = {'clear' : 'www.clearIcon.jpg' }
then access the url with your data - icons[data.conditions]
something like that maybe

@JasonCorp84 because you probably put the celsius calculation above - and let the fahrenheit assignment behind. Fahrenheit should be defined when calculating celsius:
fahrenheit = homerseklet.currently.temperature;
celsius = (fahrenheit-32)*5/9;
$("#weather").html(homerseklet.currently.temperature + " °F" + "/<br>"  + celsius);

Hello guys. Been banging my head for a while with this stuff. https://codepen.io/1leven/pen/ZyBGNb ```
$.getJSON(api_url, function(forecast) {

      console.log(forecast);
      console.log('asd');

  } )
I get XMLHttpRequest cannot load https://api.darksky.net/forecast/3c968e718d0b3439368cb9a9669b7102/56.9465272,24.053454499999997. No 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header is present on the requested resource. Origin 'https://s.codepen.io' is therefore not allowed access.
Any way I can overcome codepen.io not being allowed to parse JSON request?

@1leven I'm dealing with the same issue. according to Dark Sky: Why do I get the error No 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header is present on the requested resource when I try to call the API?
We take security very seriously at Dark Sky. As a security precaution we have disabled cross-origin resource sharing (CORS) on our servers.

Your API call includes your secret API key as part of the request. If you were to make API calls from client-facing code, anyone could extract and use your API key, which would result in a bill that you'd have to pay. We disable CORS to help keep your API secret key a secret.

To prevent API key abuse, you should set up a proxy server to make calls to our API behind the scenes. Then you can provide forecasts to your clients without exposing your API key.

I'm thinking that we'll have to use another API
unless someone here has a clever solution I haven't thought of for Dark Sky API

Hey all. I have a variable that is a string and I want to run an If statement on it, based on whether the string contains a word or not. I currently have it like this:
if (minuteSummary.search("snow")) {
    do the thing i want;
} else if (minuteSummary.search("rain")){
    do this other thing etc;
}
It doesn't seem to be doing anything though, and isn't throwing any errors.
Any thoughts on what I could be doing wrong?
h1tag

@Corinos first, I think that search takes a regular expression as a parameter. Second, it returns the index of the item if found, and -1 if it didn't find it (-1 doesn't equal/mean false in js)

Hi all.Every time I make a web page I always have this sliver of space outside my page to the right. Even if I make html/body tag width a 100%. I can fix it with "overflow-x:hidden" in css but I don't understand why it is there. Here is an example: https://codepen.io/JechtTyre/pen/PjbvdR

@kbaig Oh now it works. Good job mate. Just looked through your code and thought of something else. Have you thought of using booleans instead of 0 and 1?

That way this code

if (strictMode === 0) {
            strictMode = 1;
        } else {
            strictMode = 0;
        }

Could be just one line: strictMode = !strictMode

@GilSims - note that CodePen now has a quick-add link for Bootstrap 3 - you have to use the correct version depending on the classes that you use, FCC is teaching Bootstrap 3. (Well, using Bootstrap 3 - there is a lot more to know about it than what the lessons give you!)

Hi guys. For some reason this click jquery function only works once.
 $("#more").click(function(){
      /*slide menu under*/
      var top = $("#menu").css("top");
      alert(top);
      if(top.charAt(0) === '-')
        {
          $("#menu").css("top","1%");
      $("#menu").css("animation","SlideDown 1s");
        }
      else{

Hi i was just wondering if anyone has used the website teamtreehouse to code?
or pluralsight
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 16 2017 16:12
@JechtTyre It's because your #menu has a fixed position that ends up putting the #more element behind it. Change your z-index for #menu to -1
#menu {
  position:fixed;
  /*send in outside box*/
  top:-50%;
  width:100%;
  opacity:1;
  font-size:1.1em;
  z-index:-1;
}
(I think that's what's going on)
Jorge
@OrangeKulture

@SkyC0der doesn't work. Problem is even the "home" link on the far left stops working.

@JechtTyre I noticed your menu didn't have a cursor when hovering over it - usually that means that it's hidden behind another element
z-index: -1 was working for me - but I refreshed your page and now it doesn't
Now it's working again lol
Othman
@JechtTyre
Jun 16 2017 16:22
@SkyC0der I should mention that I have another element between MORE and background called "background-image" at z-index:-1.
*called "navbar-background"
Was trying to do some back blur effect but didn't work. It might be interfering
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 16 2017 16:23
I don't think you really need that on the background - seems to look good with just this CSS:
#navbar-background{
  width:100%;
  height:inherit;
  filter:blur(5px);
}
Also, you could simplify your JS a little bit with the .animate() method:
  $("#more").click(function() {
    /*slide menu under*/
    var top = $("#menu").css("top");
    alert(top);
    if (top[0] === "-") {
      $("#menu").animate({top: "1%"}, 1000);
    } else {
      $("#menu").animate({top: "-50%"}, 1000);
    }
  });
Cool design though - keep up the good work

@Hello911 - it should just be color: gold; and the line before it is missing a semicolon at the end?
@Hello911 - sorry, it's LESS code, I didn't realize that. I'm not familiar enough with LESS to know the answer...
@Hello911 - I think that it was just the missing semicolon on the width line. Adding that seems to make it work, the @gold now is properly processed.

@hemakshis You can do that with .hover() in jQuery or .on('mouseenter', function() {}) followed by .on('mouseleave', function() {}), but I'm not sure how that work on mobile where you can't move a cursor on top of icons.

For random quote machine.
I want to get .JSON file as an array.
Here i found solution for that https://stackoverflow.com/questions/14540248/how-to-get-an-array-javascript-of-json-file
Then generate a random number and print array object from $(".message" ) in function(json).
How do i do later part? Does JQuery take input like array[num]?

@kbaig exactly. Not sure why i didnt just say that to being with lol
Kaz Baig
@kbaig
Jun 16 2017 19:25
@fullmetal7777 The way I handle that is create a variable with a boolean and toggle the boolean when the transition is triggered, and then toggle it back when the transition is over
@fullmetal7777 not sure if that's the most efficient way to handle it though
@fullmetal7777 alternatively, you could use the .off method in jquery to do the same thing instead of creating a variable with a boolean
Andrew Hickman
@ahickman3
Jun 16 2017 19:29
not quite sure how i would set up the bool thing, so ill look into off. Thanks!
so i would have to change

$('.quote-btn').on(click....)
@kbaig got that, just not sure about where i would put everything regarding boolean lol
here was my first attempt, which seems so wrong to me lol
$('.quote-btn').click(function(){
            // $('.bg').fadeTo('slow', 0, function(){
   //              $(this).css('background-image', 'url(' + img + ')');
            // }).delay(1000).fadeTo('slow', 1);

            if(transBool){
                transBool = false;
                if (num == 0){
                $('.bg').css('background-image', 'url(http://i.imgur.com/ee3GzDU.jpg)')
                num++;
                }
                else{
                $('.bg').css('background-image', 'url(http://i.imgur.com/lelY0IQ.jpg)');
                num = 0;
                }
                transBool = true;
            }

            else{
                return;
            }

        });

@fullmetal7777 I deleted it to reformat. Here you go:
var bool = true;
var transitionDuration;

$('.quote-btn').click(function() {
  if (bool) {
    bool = false;

    /*transition code*/

    setTimeout(function() {
      bool = true;
    }, transitionDuration)
  }
});
@fullmetal7777 That's how I would do it without the off method. This way might actually be more efficient because it doesn't have to create the object. Not sure though

@ChrisAB74 Usually, you don't nest columns inside of columns unless you're going for a specific effect. See the example code here: https://getbootstrap.com/css/#grid-example-basic
<div class="row">
  <div class="col-md-4">.col-md-4</div>
  <div class="col-md-4">.col-md-4</div>
  <div class="col-md-4">.col-md-4</div>
</div>
replace .col-md-4 text with your image link, copy/paste/repeat that HTML for every 3 images

@ChrisAB74 It's because you're using <a> tags inside of <button> tags which is not allowed. Normally it would work even though it isn't valid HTML, but you aren't closing your <button> tags, so the browser just kind of gives up.

basically, controls the timing of effects you apply to elements

@flyfishingbarbara I started at the "Places Fly Fished" text and looked up, line by line, until I found the <a> tag, then formatted your code to find the error. It helps to look at stuff more vertically so you can spot the errors:
        <a href="#" class="thumbnail">
          <img src="https://s1.postimg.org/9kctwicln/dad_fishing_for_codepen.jpg" border='0' alt="dad fishing">

vs:

          <img src="https://s1.postimg.org/9kctwicln/dad_fishing_for_codepen.jpg" border='0' alt="dad fishing"
        </a>
@swong194 You would add &units=us for example, if you want US units.

Gulsvi

Jun 16 2017 21:21
It's called a query string when you add parameters to the end of the URL like that. The query string is usually formatted like:
?firstParameter=value&secondParameter=value&thirdParameter=value
^^ The first one starts with a question mark, the rest start with an ampersand. @swong194
@hemakshis You need to make a link, like this one that tweets hello world: https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text=hello world
replace "hello world" with the text you want to tweet
Barbara Pentoney

          <img src="https://s1.postimg.org/9kctwicln/dad_fishing_for_codepen.jpg" border='0' alt="dad fishing"</a>
so, I just put the closing </a> tag on the next line

Write an implementation for a function 'callAfter' that enables any function to be called after some specified duration with certain parameters, with the following mentioned syntax:
Example: Lets say you have a function called 'sum' like so:
function sum(a, b) { console.log('Sum is: ', a + b); }
Now you should be able to execute:
sum.callAfter(5000, 8, 9);

@fullmetal7777 you should use position:absolute to position your button
to avoid jumping like that
@fullmetal7777 right now you usevh as the unit to position the button, this unit is related to viewport's size, that's why your button is jumping around
Andrew Hickman
@ahickman3

Long Nguyen

Jun 16 2017 23:42
@fullmetal7777 use position:absolute and set it related to the container div instead of viewport
@fullmetal7777 you also have margin-left: 20vw;
@fullmetal7777 your button should have its position relative to the container div, not the viewport
