hey everyone does anyone know how to shorten the position.coords output i tried to convert it to a string doesn't work need to shorten it to 10 characters because the yahoo api doesn't like it
if (navigator.geolocation) {
        navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(function(position) {
            latti = position.coords.latitude;
            lonni = position.coords.longitude;
      //latt = latti.substring(0,10);
      //lonn = latti.slice(0,10);
            console.log(latti + "- " + lonni);
CallMeOrange
@EgnaroDev
Jun 18 2017 00:11
@B-keen why do you need if statement?
Curtis Turner
@curtis-turner
Jun 18 2017 00:11
so first i am just creating an array full of random quotes from my favorite tv show. then i use the random function to get a random index to get the quote i want to display. my question is how do i get my quote to display in the html
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 18 2017 00:13
@B-keen Use .toFixed() method
  navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(function(position) {
    var latti = position.coords.latitude.toFixed(2);
    var lonni = position.coords.longitude.toFixed(2);
    console.log(latti + "- " + lonni);
  });
@curtis-turner With jQuery, you use the .html() method. With regular JavaScript, you use .innerHTML
https://www.w3schools.com/jquery/html_html.asp
CallMeOrange
@EgnaroDev
Jun 18 2017 00:13
@B-keen sorry I meant I dont think you need if statement to get its location

@SkyC0der alright but like inside the script tag do i call my javascript fucntions?? like so when i do the on("click", function(){ .... and i do the .html() what do i put inside there so that i pulls from my javscript file and uses my function to return the string i want?
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 18 2017 00:16
@curtis-turner Once you are able to select a random quote from your array, you can define a variable for that quote, like randomQuote and then do $('#myQuoteDiv').html(randomQuote) - if that makes sense
var randomQuote = myQuoteArray[randomIndex];
$('#myQuoteDiv').html(randomQuote)
Curtis Turner
@curtis-turner

Hi all - I'm working on the random quote machine project, and can't get any JSON data back after trying numerous APIs, I typically get a console error similar to this: VM72 jquery.min.js:4 Mixed Content: The page at 'https://codepen.io/sdedison/pen/dRpreQ' was loaded over HTTPS, but requested an insecure XMLHttpRequest endpoint 'http://quotesondesign.com/wp-json/posts?filter%5Borderby%5D=rand&filter%5Bposts_per_page%5D=1'. This request has been blocked; the content must be served over HTTPS.
Ha - error had the codepen embedded
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 18 2017 02:52
@sdedison Mixed Content. You have to call the API over HTTPS:// instead of HTTP://
Kaz Baig
@kbaig
Jun 18 2017 02:57
@sdedison It's a codepen thing. They don't allow XMLHttpRequest over http for security reasons. You need to find an API that supports https
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 18 2017 02:59
That API does support HTTPS @kbaig
Kaz Baig
@kbaig
Jun 18 2017 03:00
@SkyC0der so he should just change the url to https right
Gulsvi
@gulsvi

Yes
Browsers choose whether or not to enforce the mixed-content security policy, not codepen, by the way :)
Lots of people like to blame it on codepen :)

@45lenlee The documentation says to use this for streams:

https://api.twitch.tv/kraken/streams/<channel ID>

To use the Free Code Camp workaround:

Replace the Twitch API base URL https://api.twitch.tv/kraken with https://wind-bow.gomix.me/twitch-api

gomix.me forwards to glitch.me, which makes it more confusing unfortunately...but, in the end, you would need:
  • https://wind-bow.glitch.me/twitch-api/streams/<channel ID>
  • https://wind-bow.glitch.me/twitch-api/channels/<channel ID>
  • https://wind-bow.glitch.me/twitch-api/users/<channel ID>
<channel ID> represents the name of the streamer account you want

@mambasnow Click "Settings" -> "CSS". Remove the link to bootstrap that you have. That's for a newer version of bootstrap. Choose Bootstrap 3 from the Quick-add menu.
Your Thumbnail class will make the image responsive in Bootstrap 3. It doesn't work in the newer version you have.

I have a question for my project creating a quote generator, is this the place to post it?
my question is... my js looks right to me, but when i click the button nothing happens... What am I missing?

var randomQuote = [
'Any sufficiently advanced technology is equivalent to magic. -Sir Arthur C. CLarke',
'The ultimate promise of technology is to make us master of a world that we command by the push of a button. -Volker Grassmuck',
'Once a new technology rolls over you, if you\’re not part of the steamroller, you\’re part of the road. -Stewart Brand',
'Technology has to be invented or adopted. -Jared Diamond',
'The best way to predict the future...is to invent it. -Alan Kay'
]

function newQuote() {
var index = Math.floor(Math.random() * (randomQuote.Length));

document.getELementById('quoteGen').innerHTML = randomQuote[index];

}
i think isee the problem now

@luccifer00 Well you can use it in your code if you add it as dependency (In codepen Settings->CSS-> add the cdn url)

@jaanhio Did you ever use python?
Python is used for lots of "research" or "scientific" computing nowadays (Mostly due to some special libraries for that)
But python is quite slow itself. But its a simple language and it has a lot of users because of that.
Because the userbase is so big, there are a lot of very established libraries ofc.
(My university just switched from Java to Python)

Also, python is around for longer than node and people often use node only as a server (Mostly because they don't know that it can be used else as well)

@jaanhio I just don't like several design decisions of the language. The class description is ugly in my eyes, its hard to reconstruct in a big file in what function or scope you are acting, functional-style programming with fluent-style is discouraged by the inventor, the language is terribly slow as long as you don't use a library like numpy which is itself written in C, and variable scope is just more or less not given (I think its kind of given, but using a variable in outer scope which was first used in inner scope just uses the value which it had in inner scope. Ughh...)
Things like x[x == "foo"] for search might be nice because its short but in my eyes its just a misuse of the indexer
@jaanhio That are some points because of which i don't like python :D ofc. its personal taste

@Geek-Killer - the navbar (if fixed at the top) is "above" the content of the page, so the page scrolls beneath it. You could add some padding-top:50px; to the body element and see if that helps.
@Geek-Killer - actually, you have to assign a z-index to the navbar to put it above the page content, as well as the padding-top. If you stick with one version of bootstrap (you are currently loading two different ones - probably should stick with V3.3.7) and set up the navbar according to the bootstrap docs, it should work properly.

@baseballpoetess Free Code Camp teaches us to use Bootstrap and they have an excellent grid system that we learn about here: https://www.freecodecamp.com/challenges/use-the-bootstrap-grid-to-put-elements-side-by-side
You will need to figure out if numbers can add up to 12, but that's the only math needed. A list of all numbers that add up to 12 would help you avoid math in that case.
To stay in alignment with the course flow that Free Code Camp teaches, I would learn bootstrap first and then dive into writing your own custom CSS with flexbox after that.

so assuming i have this json code,

{

        }

        {
            etc

    ]
}

how do i make it look like this? {by adding a property to each set of brackets}

{
    'data':[
        element1 : {
            etc
        }

        element2 : {

}
Gulsvi

Jun 18 2017 16:02
@baseballpoetess It's important to know at what point you want things to wrap - on mobile, 4 articles will be very narrow
image.png
^^ This is not a great experience for mobile
So, you probably want one article in your grid on each row for mobile, 2 for tablets, 3 for laptop, 4 for desktop

@ahickman3
Jun 18 2017 16:05
any ideas?
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 18 2017 16:06

Okay, so your code needs to generate this:

    <div class="col-sm-6 col-md-3 col-lg-4">Article 1</div>
    <div class="col-sm-6 col-md-3 col-lg-4">Article 2</div>
    <div class="col-sm-6 col-md-3 col-lg-4">Article 3</div>
    <div class="col-sm-6 col-md-3 col-lg-4">Article 4</div>
    <div class="col-sm-6 col-md-3 col-lg-4">Article 5</div>
    <div class="col-sm-6 col-md-3 col-lg-4">Article 6</div>
    <div class="col-sm-6 col-md-3 col-lg-4">Article 7</div>
    <div class="col-sm-6 col-md-3 col-lg-4">Article 8</div>
    <div class="col-sm-6 col-md-3 col-lg-4">Article 9</div>
    <div class="col-sm-6 col-md-3 col-lg-4">Article 10</div>
    <div class="col-sm-6 col-md-3 col-lg-4">Article 11</div>
    <div class="col-sm-6 col-md-3 col-lg-4">Article 12</div>

And replace "article 1", "article 2", "article 3", etc.. with your article title and excerpt.

No math needed at this point beyond what you're already doing with your for loops to generate the existing grids
Bootstrap does the math for you to resize it as needed.

adding the mario0 and mario1

but im actfually considering just making a new aray object and including elements of the json in that object. So basically remaking the json object with only the parts i want in a new object array

@fullmetal7777 That isn't valid JSON
I see people try this all the time, but usually it's easiest to grab the data you get from the original JSON and use it when needed rather than trying to build your own Object that's formatted in a way you want

Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 18 2017 16:26
@fullmetal7777 Try it with a smaller data set:
// before
var obj1 = {
  data: [
    {link: "http://i.imgur.com/RLbcYDC.jpg"},
    {link: "http://i.imgur.com/ee3GzDU.jpg"}
  ]
};

// after
var obj2 = {
  data: [
    {mario0: {link: "http://i.imgur.com/RLbcYDC.jpg"}},
    {mario1: {link: "http://i.imgur.com/ee3GzDU.jpg"}}
  ]
};
Then the manipulation would be easier to work with I think:
var obj2 = {data: []}
var dataToAdd = {mario0: obj1.data[0]}
obj2.data.push(dataToAdd);
^^ That would give you the first bit of the obj2 shown above
You just need to loop through the object to build it out. But, this shouldn't be necessary - you'll just be making a larger object out of data that's already available to you
@curtis-turner If you are using the quotes on design API, they cache the responses, so you'll have to disable cache in your .ajax or .getJSON call. Hard to help without seeing your code :)
That's the only thought I have though

nameArr has names in it

Andrew Hickman
@ahickman3
Jun 18 2017 16:42
for(var i = 0; i < nameArr.length; i++){
                for (var j = 0; j < 8; j++){
                    newObj[nameArr[0]+"counter"] = jsonData.data[inCounter].link;
                    // jsonData.data[inCounter].id = nameArr[counter];
                    // jsonData.data

                    inCounter++;
                }
            counter++;

            }
is the for loop that will assign properties and values to the empty object. Basically just confused why 'counter' return the word counter and not the number that it represents
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 18 2017 16:42

@OdinJorna you should be using vw and vh a lot btw. If you want stuff to scale to the screen size in any way, then vw and vh is what youll use. You can also use em and rem for some otherstuff with scaling, but i mostly just use vh and vw.

@mrgrizzlie33 You need to pass the testArr array into the nextInLine function, not just [2]. Also, in your nextInLine function, you don't need the zero in arr.shift() because it automatically will remove the first item in the array. Shift() returns the value it removed, so instead of returning arr[0], you should ... I'll let you figure that out :)

Thumbtack helps Professionals (Pros) grow their business by identifying new customers. Upon registering on Thumbtack, a Pro specifies which categories of services they provide. To help match customer requests with qualified Pros, Thumbtack maintains a list of Pros grouped by service categories.

Given a list of pros and their category preferences, return the list of Pros for each category.

Example

For pros = ["Jack", "Leon", "Maria"] and

preferences = [["Computer repair", "Handyman", "House cleaning"],
["Computer lessons", "Computer repair", "Data recovery service"],
["Computer lessons", "House cleaning"]]
the output should be

proCategorization(pros, preferences) = [[["Computer lessons"], ["Leon", "Maria"]],
[["Computer repair"], ["Jack", "Leon"]],
[["Data recovery service"], ["Leon"]],
[["Handyman"], ["Jack"]],

Input/Output

[time limit] 4000ms (js)
[input] array.string pros

A sorted non-empty array of unique strings consisting of English letters.

Here and below we assume that strings are sorted lexicographically.

Guaranteed constraints:
1 ≤ pros.length ≤ 5,
3 ≤ pros[i].length ≤ 10.

[input] array.array.string preferences

Array of the same length as pros. For each valid i preferences[i] is a sorted array of unique elements, representing the categories the ith Pro provides services in.

Guaranteed constraints:
1 ≤ preferences.length ≤ 5,
1 ≤ preferences[i].length ≤ 10,
3 ≤ preferences[i][j].length ≤ 25.

[output] array.array.array.string

Array of category descriptions sorted by category names. Each category should be listed in the following format: [[<category>], [<Pro1>, <Pro2>...]] where <category> is a category name, and <Proi> is a Pro that provides services in it.

Each category present in preferences should be returned (in the right order), and Pros in each subarray should be sorted.

randomFxn(finalJsonArr);
console.log(finalJsonArr);

im assuming im not getting the object back to the jsonData parameter in the success function. Not sure how to though, or maybe im misunderstanding how this works?

@SkyC0der i added callback(newObj); and its saying callback isnt a function now
ugh i feel like im soooo close lol

@fullmetal7777 callbacks start to make this confusing - you were closer before I'm afraid :(

No, lol, that's going to make it even harder
@fullmetal7777 Have you done the weather challenge yet?

@SkyC0der nah, but literally if i get this figured out, im pretty sure ill have everything done for the random quote machine, just need to tie it all together then, which will be easy

That challenge teaches how to take data (the location) and send it to another function where you build a URL to get the weather for that location. Then you take the weather data and send it off to yet another function to show it all on the page.
You're hitting the exact problem that everyone hits when they try the weather app for the first time
global variables don't work
In your success function, send finalJsonArr to another function as an argument. Then you'll be able to console.log inside that other function.

well, im not using global variables anymore inside the ajax function. Im trying to get the damn values out of it lol and from the link you sent me, he was saying i could try one of those three options didnt he?
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 18 2017 22:25
Yeah, you can try it, definitely. I'm just saying, the easiest of those three options is to pass the data as an argument to another function
callbacks and promises work too - but not as easy IMO

@SkyC0der "In the following we will look at three different solutions that are all building on top of each other:

Promises with async/await (ES2017+, available in older browsers if you use a transpiler or regenerator)
Callbacks (popular in node)
Promises with then() (ES2015+, available in older browsers if you use one of the many promise libraries)" and the callback one seemed the simplest lol
