Hi everyone! Was wondering if someone can help me troubleshoot this.. I can't seem to find a way to make this show up. https://codepen.io/astis1/pen/EXWXYa Line 18. I've tried several things, but can't seem to figure it out. It may be something simple i'm overlooking.

I'm trying to make my .portfolio-text show up
under the image; but, I cannot seem to get it to show up. I've tried playing around w/ the margins, padding, and the font sizes
line 62 in the css portion
@victorjoseromero I used the following bootstrap classes for a fixed header. class="navbar navbar-default navbar-fixed-top"

@astis1 Jose, that is because the color is white, by inherit. Try adding color:black; for example, it will appear at the bottom of section 2
@astis1 white background + white color = you cant see it :p
@astis1 did you see it now?

@astis1 note that you added for your h1 tag the color fff which is white. Then, if you does not declare the color:black for your .portfolio-text, it will get automatically white, because it is a class given to a h1 tag. portfolii-text is inside portfolio-header. The right thing would be simply declaring color:black; for portfolio-header, so that .portfolio-text would inherit it. IN ALL: try always adding classes to generic elements and make other elements inherit as much as possible, to spare code.

Objective: Build a CodePen.io app that is functionally similar to this: https://codepen.io/FreeCodeCamp/full/YqLyXB/.

Fulfill the below user stories. Use whichever libraries you need. Give it your own personal style.

User Story: I can access all of the portfolio webpage's content just by scrolling.

User Story: I can click different buttons that will take me to the portfolio creator's different social media pages.

User Story: I can see thumbnail images of different projects the portfolio creator has built (if you haven't built any websites before, use placeholders.)

User Story: I navigate to different sections of the webpage by clicking buttons in the navigation.

Don't worry if you don't have anything to showcase on your portfolio yet - you will build several apps on the next few CodePen challenges, and can come back and update your portfolio later.

There are many great portfolio templates out there already. However, you should consider building your portfolio page as much as you can from the ground up. Using Bootstrap can help make this process much easier for you.

Note that CodePen.io overrides the Window.open() function, so if you want to open windows using jQuery, you will need to target invisible anchor elements like this one: <a target='_blank'>.

Remember to use Read-Search-Ask if you get stuck.

When you are finished, click the "I've completed this challenge" button and include a link to your CodePen.

You can get feedback on your project by sharing it with your friends on Facebook.

Jun 20 2017 01:45
there are escape sequences in JS challenge but is it important to know them?
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 20 2017 01:45
@bytao7mao Try to simplify your HTML, I think it will help a little.
Something like:
    <div class="social">
      <i class="fa fa-twitter"></i>
      <i class="fa fa-facebook"></i>
      <i class="fa fa-twitter"></i>
      <i class="fa fa-twitter"></i>
    </div>
CallMeOrange
@EgnaroDev
Jun 20 2017 01:46
@SkyC0der do you know escape sequences
\'    single quote
\"    double quote
\\    backslash
\n    newline
\r    carriage return
\t    tab
\b    backspace
\f    form feed
Pedro Coelho
@PedroAMCoelho
Jun 20 2017 01:46
@bytao7mao i would use buttons, it is easier
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 20 2017 01:47
Then you can get rid of all your CSS and go with something simple like this too @bytao7mao
.social {
 text-align: center;
 margin-bottom: 45px;
}

.social .fa {
  font-size: 45px;
  border: 2px solid white;
  border-radius: 50%;
  height: 80px;
  line-height: 80px;
  width: 80px;
  color: white;
}

@Riley1435 Move these two lines so they run right after your switch statement:
        img.src = iconSrc;
        htmlDiv.appendChild(img);
(Currently, the first one is running before you set iconSrc and the second one is inside your switch statement)
After that, you need to call displayIcon() somewhere in your code

Jorge
@OrangeKulture
Jun 20 2017 04:37
@kumquatfelafel because you only set margin:0 auto to the first input field
ideally you would have a container div with text center, and all your elements within that div would be automatically centered

@kumquatfelafel for what it's worth...when I first started learning html and css, bootstrap threw me off...you might try getting comfortable with plain old css before implementing a library like bootstrap

@denizenofcode well .. i mean it all comes down to the markup .. if you specify a %, it refers to it's parent element
denizenofcode
@denizenofcode

@OrangeKulture Normally that would make sense, but for example, I just changed the code for the container-fluid div to take up 100%, and the 3 primary children to take up 70%, 20%, and 10% of the container-fluid div. Still doesn’t fill the page.

@MauriSg99 Nice work. Personal preference...but your menu should be in view at all times. It would make a better experience on mobile. Move your fonts into your <head> rather than importing them in your CSS. Run "Analyze CSS" in codepen and you'll see several errors related to that. Run the analyze HTML option in codepen as well and you'll see some additional issues that need to be fixed.
And... make your portfolio images responsive - use the bootstrap grid we learned about in the HTML challenges

@abdullahdiriye have u ever tried to manually divide 2 numbers, on paper?
like
12/5=2
2

when u use modulus 12 % 2 u get 2, which is not a result of division, but that number below, which is called a remainder

% (usually percentage sign) is in this case called modulus

Hi guys, I have just started my first basic front end development which is building a tribute page and I have been overwhelmed. I looked at the example given and found that there are elements and classes which were not taught to us in the challenges and we didn't practice them, besides we should not look at the code to figure them. So how we would know them ?

@EngOmarAmin you don't have to make an exact copy of the example project, use your own style and knowledge. You can totally do it using only what you've learned ,and there's google too

Hello guys. I want to use express and vue-cli.I do not know where to put the server codes. Should I make the back-end codes separate from front-end codes?
h1tag
@h1tag
Jun 20 2017 10:39
@ehsansh I think that's the convention, that is using seperate files for the server and the front end. (I don't know vue, so my answer might be wrong)

Build a Tribute Page
Objective: Build a CodePen.io app that is functionally similar to this: https://codepen.io/FreeCodeCamp/full/NNvBQW/.
Fulfill the below user stories. Use whichever libraries you need. Give it your own personal style.
User Story: I can view a tribute page with an image and text.
User Story: I can click on a link that will take me to an external website with further information on the topic.
Remember to use Read-Search-Ask if you get stuck.
When you are finished, click the "I've completed this challenge" button and include a link to your CodePen.
You can get feedback on your project by sharing it with your friends on Facebook.

@EngOmarAmin I think the point is to teach you how to use what you've learned and search for what you don't know, and to see if you've learned the lessons so far and know how to put them to use.

The bare minimum would be to meet the user stories, then you can improve them later after you've learned some advanced topics or you can take a look at the example code after you finish the project

@vudyo - one thing that I found helpful for getting some ideas - the Bootstrap lessons (if you are thinking of using Bootstrap) at http://w3schools.com/bootstrap, especially the "Themes" section, gives a walkthrough of designing and create a few different styles of pages, some of which would be suitable as a base for designing your own portfolio. As I said, I found it to be helpful, since design of a page like that is something that was new to me. Maybe it will be helpful for you?

@tundeiness - it doesn't look like you have any kind of click handler for the button? You have to write some javascript code to make the request for a quote from some site, or add an array of quotes, randomly select and display one. (Unless you forgot to save your pen and I didn't see what you are currently working with?)
@vudyo - it's a good place to start - even ifyou don't use it at all, it's a nice walkthrough of setting up a page.

@khaduch true. I will include them. However the challenge i am facing with this is that the request a quote button is not responsive. that is, it moves out of the container whenever the viewport shrinks.

Jun 20 2017 15:09
@tundeiness - it looks like you have two separate sections there - the quote are, which has that rounded green part on the left, and square on the right, and the area where the button is, which spans the entire width of the page? The two sections are not going to behave the same way because they are using different proportions in the columns, I think? Maybe you can divide that row where the button is to have the same column proportions as the quote area?
@tundeiness - plus you are adding additional styling with your .imgCol class - so that moves them even further apart in their behavior?
tundeiness
@tundeiness
Jun 20 2017 15:13
@khaduch the first row works perfectly. It resizes as the viewport changes. However in the second row, one column will have a button to request for a new quote and the other will hold the social media icons. i'm using bootstrap and these elements are in columns one and two.
@khaduch do you suggest that the second row should be housed by it own container? instead of including two rows in a container?
@khaduch the .imgCol class and the .textCol class are on the same row...sooner i will be adding more styling to them.
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Jun 20 2017 15:19
@tundeiness - one thing, there is no bootstrap class named row-fluid - so that is doing nothing for you.
I just think that the styling that you have in the .imgCol css is modifying the behavior of that row and the .socCol is not going to behave the same way, so as the screen width changes, they are going to move in different directions. I don't think that you want that to happen that way, so you have to make some adjustments.

Ken Haduch

Jun 20 2017 15:39
@tundeiness - I think that one container would work - the more important thing, I think, is to make sure that both rows and the corresponding columns have the same characteristics. The bootstrap grid and columns set a specific behavior, and if you modify that with other settings such as fixed-widths, etc. it will affect how things work overall.

@AnnasLab I see an object you can access with dot notation:
var myString = { moves: [55, 21, 22, 33], tiles: [{ t: 3, r: 0 }] };
console.log(myString.moves[2]); // 22
console.log(myString.tiles[0].r) // 0
No need for regex
oh wait, I don't see anything anymore
you disappeared

@tundeiness - the height can be independent, I would think? It's mostly the width and the fact that they would be changing in the same way that would probably be the most important? I guess you would have to see what happened on a smaller (mobile) device to really know how it worked out in the end.

And custom thumbnails: http://getbootstrap.com/components/#thumbnails-custom-content

@SkyC0der this is a user input, that's why it's contain dot nation

Hello everybody I need help to solve this, I created this short example to make things clear
I need to replace the "[ by [ and ]" by ] combinations everytime found in this string, I tried this using case-insensitive regex but it doesn't work.

var myString = "Hello my name is "annas" and my age "[19]", I live in "[Mars]"

I tried this but it doesn't work

var myString = myString .replace(/]"/i, /]/);

How can I get the placeholders in "my work" to all stay the same size, no matter the screen size? https://codepen.io/mimib33/pen/LLGxqG
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 20 2017 16:22
@AnnasLab This is not a valid string: "{"moves":"[55,21,22,33]","tiles":"[{"t":3,"r":0}]"}", you would need + signs between the double quotes to concatentate everything
Or use single quotes inside of double quotes
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Jun 20 2017 16:22
@mariyahb3 you could set a max-width/max-height property on images
also you don't want to give the images the column classes, those should go to divs
and you should use container just once and nest all your code in there
Jorge
@OrangeKulture
Jun 20 2017 16:26
or you can use placehold.it
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 20 2017 16:28

@mariyahb3 You are not implementing the grid correctly. The suggestion from @coymeetsworld might help alleviate some of the issues you're seeing and the placehold.it image service suggested by @OrangeKulture will be helpful for choosing specific image sizes, but you need to start with a correct implementation of the bootstrap grid. This is how four images would look:

<div class="container-fluid">
  <div class="row">
    <div class="col-md-3">
      <img class="img-responsive center-block"  src="http://rmo.sites.olt.ubc.ca/files/2017/02/thumbnail-available-soon.jpg">
    </div>
    <div class="col-md-3">
      <img class="img-responsive center-block"  src="http://rmo.sites.olt.ubc.ca/files/2017/02/thumbnail-available-soon.jpg">
    </div>
    <div class="col-md-3">
      <img class="img-responsive center-block"  src="http://rmo.sites.olt.ubc.ca/files/2017/02/thumbnail-available-soon.jpg">
    </div>
    <div class="col-md-3">
      <img class="img-responsive center-block"  src="http://rmo.sites.olt.ubc.ca/files/2017/02/thumbnail-available-soon.jpg">
    </div>
  </div>
</div>

The HTML above can be modified for different screen sizes - it's probably best to practice a little more with the grid system to get an understanding of how you want it to look. We're happy to help you get a hang of it here.

So I decided to switch to imgur to host my pics but it doesn’t seem to be working. Is there anything wrong with this code or can you guys recommend a better site…

<a target="_blank" href="https://codepen.io/phuzisham/full/dvXdGj/"><img class="img-responsive" id="portfolioImage" src="http://i.imgur.com/ZBgXLzT.png?2" alt="Pong Clone"></a>

I used the direct link from their site which supposedly is what you’re supposed to do.

@phuzisham use the image link for each image
@phuzisham I.E right click on the image and either open the image in a new tab and copy the url or click copy image address
Gulsvi

Jun 20 2017 16:31
@dorealex Instead of location.href = url; do window.open(url);
@phuzisham If it's on codepen, imgur blocks requests from codepen. Try using https://postimage.io, that's what most of us use.

Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Jun 20 2017 16:58
@Be1ar - you should add target="_blank" on your URL for your portfolio project so that it opens in a new page, at least that is a good idea so that your portfolio doesn't close. On your tribute page, you have an extra set of double quotes on one of your headings (I just noticed that when taking a quick look at it.) Same thing for the link within your tribute page - have it open on a new tab.
And the suggestion to use the grid is a good one - it can make your page respond to the different screen widths.
Good luck with the project and the lessons!
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 20 2017 16:58
For example, see how this image grid changes when you change your browser size - the same thing needs to happen with your web page layout: https://codepen.io/skycoder/pen/mWyQVG
All by using the various col-xs-*, col-sm-*, col-md-*, and col-lg-* classes

it's container-fluid, not fluid-container I think
@MachineVision2020 it's container-fluid, not fluid-container I think
@MachineVision2020 also, that is a lot of html styling... why not just do it in css?
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 20 2017 17:14

@MachineVision2020 If a mobile phone is 280px wide, for example, this div and all of its content will be pushed over 90% off to the right:

<div class="align" style="margin-left:250px;">

Also, click "Settings" -> "CSS" and remove the version of bootstrap you have. Click the quick-add dropdown menu and add "Bootstrap 3" instead.
